Still about artistic direction, the music is nice and perfectly matches the world.

Storywise, it’s simple and light. Don’t expect to find an extremely developed scriptwriting, but some mysteries are good enough to make the player wanting a few answers.

That’s all for what I liked about SOTC. There are also many things I didn’t like. First, let me start with the absolute worst thing in this game: the horse handling. It is HORRIBLY TERRIBLE. I don’t care that it’s originally a PS2 game. If you remaster/remake it (2 times), you correct the obvious bad stuff. It’s not acceptable to « remake » a game and to offer your players such a disastrous experience when it comes to the handling of the horse. Moreover, the frame rate is bad. It’s too slow and I cannot believe that they cannot make such an old game a 60fps on PS4. That’s another very negative point. On top of that, there are lots of camera problems and I’ve found myself stuck several times because of bugs or gameplay imperfections. Disappointing for such a light-content game.

More subjectively, I found the game slow to begin. I also don’t like this fictional language thing. Globally, I got tired after a while so I forced myself to finish the last third. Nevertheless, it’s worth playing for its uniqueness and because I have rarely seen such advanced boss fighting (if you can call them like that).

O gráfico é muito impressionante, a trilha sonora é sençacional, quanto aos colossos, os puzzles podiam ser melhores, mas a jogabilidade é frustrante.

I was really really hyped for this game and when I finally start playing the hype was over. I tried to look at this game only as art. I give this 10 for art, and 2 for game, one of my biggest disappointment in video games, maybe I missed the whole point or I just cant enjoy game for its good looks and I need something that drives me to feel for the characters in its world. I give it 6 only because most critics love it and it makes me feel like I cant see what most of you can, something to be impressed about...what a shame.

If you are going to remaster can't they have fixed the following gaming problems from the 00's which are just crappy not retro.

    - Bad camera
    - Clunking unresponsive controls because the character has to finish the animation it's doing before you do something else
    - Controllering your horse with tank like controls!
    - Waiting and waiting for the AI in boss battles to do what is meant to be doing for you to progress
    - Pretty but nearly empty open world.

It's retro I get it, but scores like 9.7/10 on IGN ridiculous. If this came out from some unknown dev and wasn't a remake it just wouldn't get anything like that score.

Most of the reviews are based mainly in nostalgia, one of them even recounting solely their past experiences with the game, reviews such as this have more than likely artificially boosted this game to it's current position on this site. Looking at the game alone; it controls horribly, the player character is really floaty and awkward, even more so for that of the horse, she will get stuck on every little object, which in tandem with her wide turning is horrible for maneuverability, especially in forested areas. The climbing of the colossi in this game is also very iffy, to say the least, climbing these things during the boss fights is a pain, with the last boss being the worst of them all. Not the difficulty of managing the stamina meter, that is simply one of the game's mechanics; just when the try to shake you off, when the colossi shake the player characters grip tends to shift, during the 15th boss i was holding onto the boss' shoulder armor when it started to shake, I got flung to it's back, and then to the floor, during which my stamina meter was more than half way full. My Final criticism for this game is the strenuous animation, particularly when getting up after being knocked down, to site another instance in the game, during the 11th boss, i was rammed and my character was knocked onto the ground where he remained while he was hit twice more and died. This game is beautiful and back in the day i see how it would've been deserving of this high a standing when compared to other games of the time, but this game has been released twice since then, bringing in more money for the same developers for the same game, adding nothing but aesthetics, and garnering the same praise, so, is this game worth buying? I'd say that this game is worth buying to an extent, those who are nostalgic for the original will be the main audience for this game, but if you're someone who happens to have (as of writing this) $30 burning a hole in your wallet, or you just want to experience a style of game not so prevalent today, then the Shadow Of The Colossus is the game for you. But there is not enough to do, not enough depth. Game gets very repetitive after beating few bosses. To often I felt that game deisgn is not intuitive, and I'm doing not what my mind suggests me, but what developers intend me to do (like jumping to that high platform where colossus with sword is. Didn't know what I should do and fell to water plenty times). The gameplay doesn't really require skill even on Hard, the whole difficulty is to find a dude and find a way to kill him. And what's wrong with the camera? Why do I have to fight it all the time? It's like it has some rubber strings that pull it hard to the center all the time.

What saves the game are the colossi themselves. They are incredible creatures who each have different ways of attacking you and being defeated, and they are fun to fight. It's too bad that getting there is a chore.

Controls are clunky, but since it's a remake of a PS2 game I won't be too harsh about it, although maybe they should've done something about it.

The camera control is really bad (I guess it is as good as it was in the PS2 era) but nowadays it feels like the player lacks control over where it should be looking. The world is always covered with a thin fog, which together with graphics and textures that reveal its age, does not hide that this game belongs two console generations back. Given the limited number of characters and the big but relatively empty world, I would have expected that the team working on the remaster would have improved the game graphics, but it seems to me that they have just ported it to PS4. In summary, this games does not live to the review made by the critics, which give it a 91. A 91! Clearly, the critics have not been able to leave behind its nostalgia when writing the review. Expand

Having played the game back in the day, I was looking forward to this release. Sadly the game has not translated well into modern times. Perhaps it is due to the fact that I have been spoiled by more modern control schemes and gameplay loops, the the game simply does not hold up.

Obviously the one main positive is the graphics. They are absolutely stunning and Bluepoint should definitely get a ton of credit in that department. On top of that, adding in a performance mode on the PS4 Pro is something way more devs should be doing. Its nearly flawless. Kudos.

Graphics and performance aside, everything else about the game is just seriously unpleasant. Once you've killed one colossi, you've killed them all. The controls are SO horrendously floaty and bad, Idk how the game didnt get stopped in QA. I understand they wanted to keep the controls like the original but omg, the controls are so so so bad that it killed almost everything for me. you never know if youre going to grab onto a ledge or the fur, the jumping is so imprecise and you fight with the camera every single second of gameplay. Its infuriating.

Dont get me started on the Agro (The horse). Its. Awful. I hate it. Its worse than Roach in TW3 and thats saying something. Never goes where you want him to, often just juts into a random direction whenever it wants. So unpleasant to control especially considering how much time you spend riding him and its made even worse since you need him for a few of the fights,

The story is also completely forgettable. There is almost no voice acting to speak of, and there's no clear reason as to how you got to where you are. I really wish they would have redone this part with flashier cutscenes and cinemetography.

Put the awful controls and lack of ability of the story to grip me, and you've got a boring game that has flashes of brilliance and a TON of potential. If the controls were made tighter and the camera control improved, i would easily raise the review score to an 8.
The game is by no means broken, in fact its flawlessly polished. its just ruined by poor controls.

This game was a platinum trophy pursuit for me, so it's safe to say I played this one to death. I came to expect a lot having never played it on the older consoles, and heard a lot of good words...

I'm going to be a bit 'edgy' or whatever, and go against the general consensus here, but although I applaud the game for what it does extremely well, which I'll get into, I was left really underwhelmed by something not enough people have commented on but some of the most important things: controls, camera and game mechanics.

I felt controls were really clunky, often unresponsive, often annoying to the extreme. The horse will sometimes not budge. The horse won't vault over obvious things you'd expect to the point you have to kind of 'reverse' yourself out of a stupid angle.

The aiming is terrible and jittery and I'm not just talking about me being rubbish, the aiming is terrible and onerous. To the point of affecting my overall enjoyment of the game which obviously becomes a problem, especially if you're going for those trophies.

The camera is also a problem. I don't consider it the biggest of issues with the game, however I will say it's 'dated' in that, for instance, it won't let you look wherever you want at the right time in all the right places. These camera 'issues' are actually intentional, and I'm sure lifted from the older versions of the game, but seeing as I'm used to more freedom in certain modern open world titles, this camera is basically dated.

So with the part most people will down vote this for out of the way... the good stuff. The game looks incredible. The sound and music, gorgeous. The boss fights are monumental. I loved solving the puzzles and seeing where the story would go in the end. To this end I was glad to having never spoiled anything going into it, as let's say there's a good twist. The game is definitely creative, and deserving some of its praise for this alone. It was clearly ahead of the curve in many ways back in the days of PS2, but I'm not going to let that cloud the fact it has glaring problems. Also if you do all the challenges, and do the bosses on all the difficulties you get some cool extras like concept art to enjoy.

In closing, it's a shame the janky controls and some of the mechanics, such as aiming and horse control want to bring my score on this down. I was looking to give this a strong 8 or 9, but instead I think a 6 is about right for this.

The premise of SotC may be interesting - but at the end, becomes a hollow, pointless technical demonstrator. As with Team Ico's "The Last Guardian"... SotC presents a potentially interesting take on the 3d puzzle/platform game, but ultimately in the same way it just becomes annoying with frustratingly bad controls, especially the temperamentally aloof Agro (I felt very agro when interacting with this horse, who seems about as intelligent as a bag of bricks); the cringey character mechanics that often end up seeing Wander lurching around as if drunk; the woeful camera that seems to have been programmed by someone suffering autism (avoiding focusing on the important things), the vacuous story (more on that); and the at once impressive open-world landscape that seems to have been for a completely different game, and at the end just becomes a vast riding simulator arena; the map and locator mechanic that often has you inadvertantly going off down a dead-end; pointless side-missions that add nothing relevant to the game; and finally the Colossi themselves - poor AI, meaningless combat dynamics where you rarely need to die if you can be bothered to just leave the arena and wait the 2-3 minutes to rejuvenate health... not to mention the completely contrived design that turns them in to basically just moving platforms. Even if the mechanics had been sorted in the PS4 re-master, the game itself is empty... a lot of people praise the minimalist story line - but essentially there is no story until you complete the game, and when you get there, it really isn't worth the wait.

Also many people are impressed with the meta-meaning of 'who is the monster'?... and we're meant to feel sorry for the Colossi... but in the end, I felt nothing for them except a hairy (angry) platform environment - they express no more sentience than an angry fart. As for the protagonist - he is essentially a moving emotionless mannequin - with no real emotion, no motivation, no real impact from all the killing he does. And if he can't be bothered caring, then neither can I.

The problem is that this is lauded as a PS classic - and perhaps on the PS2 it was truly impressive, but to modern sensibilities and expectations, this is only a so-so game at best, but elevated to a shocker given the unjustifiable love for the game (especially by critics). If you're wondering whether to buy it - and thinking it sounds pretty simple with only 16 Colossi to dispatch when some of them can be killed in 5 mins, or 1 hour (due to the poor programming and crap controls that force you to repeat so many things) - it is all over too quickly.

The only thing that gives it any length is the ridiculous riding of the horse to your next opponent... and it's not like you'll be doing anything on the journey except wondering why this was a feature of the game at all. That and the very contrived and repetitive gameplay when you get there. Got this as a PS+ freebie, and was actually going to buy it. Glad I didn't.

Incredibly disappointing game that just comes across to me as one of those technical demonstrators that was turned into a ill-conceived and poorly executed (almost) game.

Music is occasional and it's hard to compare it to such great boss games like dark souls. Open world while really beautiful it's empty and lifeless.

However, the controls make this game nearly unplayable. I've been playing games for most of my life and I'm very competent at them. I could not make heads or tails of the control scheme from very early on. There would be bizarre camera movements just trying to find the next colossus or incredibly broken animations when trying to do the most basic of attacks.

When I rolled for the first time, I literally laughed out loud due to how silly the animation looks. Your character literally throws his shoulder into the ground and awkwardly ragdolls back into position. I actually told my wife to look at the screen because of how silly it was. I would be lying if I said this game wasn't anything special--there is absolutely a sense of real magic to it. But I also can't in good conscience recommend anyone spend money (or perhaps valuable time) on a game like this as it currently stands. I don't think an update is coming five years later. But it is an absolute shame that such a widely acclaimed "masterpiece" feels nearly as clunky as QWOP or Getting Over It.

This game feels like they salvaged what they could out of a fatally drained budget and sold it like having so little content was the plan all along.

With the last bosses it did get more interesting, picked up a bit of suspense and finally the ending did make up for a lot of narrative that was missing most of the game. It is an experience, but as a game, it's over after 6-8 hours, and that only because you have to repeatedly travel over long and empty distances and if you go hunting a few useless lizards and fruits in a partially good looking, but mostly very bland looking environment.

You can get probably get a bit more challengeing things to do and some new equipment in New Game+, but why would you really want to...?

There is a very minor connection to The Last Guardian (basically in the setting, the climbing, and the general feel), but that is a very different "story" in quite a few aspects.

I bought a PS4 just to play this game, Spider-man, God of War and the other slew of highly acclaimed exclusives for this console. Out of all of these games I will say SotC has not lived out to the legendary status.
One thing that ruins 90% of game are the controls and camera. They are absolutely the worst I have ever seen in any 3rd person game. Where ever you would like to look, apparently the game kwos better than you. Racing on your horse at full gallop and the camera drops to the ground where you can't see any obstacles in front of you. Weird. I enjoy standing completely still and moving the camera a tad and watch the game quickly switch the view to some neutral position that doesn't make sense. Watch any video on any YouTube gameplay and watch the the fans gushing about the game still struggle will it. In fact many often comment on the several downsides of this game and yet still call it one their favorites, if not THE favorite of all time. I don't get how such a major drawback still can be overlooked even after 2 remasters. It's practically criminal.
It's not just the camera controls, the hero and horse controls are terrible too. Watch players on a YouTube video fight the controls while trying to cross the narrow land bridges. It's a good thing your horse won't run off the edge because that would be game breaking. It's because your horse kind of has a mind of its own and will run his own path if you let him and don't fight it. But if you like to think you have control, that's where you'll mess up. What makes matters worse is that there are Colossi that need the horse for combat. Even just controlling your elfish hero that prances across the prairies like a ballerina is not that intuitive. People would put up with bad controls like this a couple decades ago but now this can't be forgiven.
I didn't really know much about this game and what I was getting into but after defeating the first 4 bosses I realized that that is all this game is. Defeating large tedious bosses. There is nothing else to fight or do that really matters. I've learned from watching walkthroughs that there are items and shrines to find out in the world. I don't know where they are because the world is pretty huge but barren. The gamer I watched even said that he wouldn't bother getting them until AFTER he defeated the Colossi. What is the point then?
The game is really MAYBE a couple hours of actual interesting gameplay surrounded by things out of your control that just slow you down or make you start over. Long travels times to boss locations that will be redone if you die. Fall in water? Expect a very slow swim back to land. Prepare to wait for each Colossus to perform the action needed so you can begin your ascent to his sweet spot. If you miss it, prepare to wait again. Need your hero to rest on a safe spot during your climb? Get ready for him to flop all over the place like a rag doll from the slightest movement. I also wonder what percentage of SotC players have used videos and wikis to defeat a Colossus because many times things are unclear. I rarely ever go online for hints but I did more on this game than in most other games played in my lifetime put together. The hints the game gives you are vague and sometimes misleading. In one, the voice tells you to knock off the beasts armor to defeat him but in actuality he knocks his own armor off by striking a metal plate instead of soft ground. Something the game expected me to figure out at random, I guess.
And the one thing that shocked me the most is the Colossus battles get tedious very quickly. There is no tension because even a direct strike by a colossus might do less than 25% damage which quickly automatically rejuvenates. You can fall from some of the tallest places and still not even take 50% damage. I guess that's good because you would just be restarting from the main temple or last shrine each time but it also means there are little to no stakes involved.
This game isn't a test of skill really but a test of frustration. If you are the type that doesn't get easily frustrated by challenges then this is the game for you. I'm not that type of person.

What I cannot accept are the absolutely horrific controls and camera placement issues this game has. From first moment to last the controls are so unwieldy, so unresponsive, and oh so annoying that all of the potential this game had to be good lay in ruins. Had I known the control system was so flawed I would have never dreamed of buying the game. I had heard that the original controls for the PS2 were also finicky but had expected (yes, I am gullible) the remaster to perhaps correct these problems. Instead it simply upgraded the graphics and kept all the problems the original game suffered from. I'm not sure how anyone can score this game beyond a 7 with such dire control mechanisms and clunky movement - especially when the entire game is based upon roaming the land using said woeful controls. Unless you are a die hard fan I'd recommend you avoid it - certainly if you've never played the game before give it a wide berth. I managed about 3 hours before becoming so frustrated that I turned it off.

    - I've never played the original. I have no nostalgic feelings or memories about the game. Prior to playing it, I've only heard the greatest of things about it.
    - If you like the game, that's awesome. This is not meant as an attack towards people who enjoy the game. As long as games draw people in, I'm happy. No matter if I myself don't enjoy something. There are simply some aspects that ruined the experience for me

So let's begin with my thoughts on the game.

    The Good:

    - Graphics. Obviously. I'm not sure if I've ever played a game that looked better. Maybe Red Dead Redemption 2. SotC is definitely a very pretty game.

    - Music. I wouldn't call the score a masterpiece, but it's somewhere between "very good" and "awesome" for me. I'll definitely listen to it some more in my own time.

    The Meh:

    - Story. Many people praise it to heights not achievable by anything else it seems. But to me, the (very, very small) bits of story did not really hit the mark. It's certainly not bad, but considering the bias I got by listening to other opinions, I was quite disappointed. There is a (kinda) clever twist, but I felt like it was too little too late to move me. The whole premise also isn't that great over all. There is MUCH better stuff out there that doesn't get nearly as much attention or praise. I can still see why people like it, though

    The Bad:

    - Controls. I'm NOT talking about the control-scheme (or button-mapping). This is about how using the controller translates to what's happening on screen. I get that the protagonist is supposed to be very young and inexperienced, but from a gameplay-perspective unresponsiveness and clunk (at least to that extent) are not justified by that.

    - Horse riding. Pretty much the worst riding controls I've ever come across. Tank controls in general are great (again, not about button-mapping) but the horse simply doesn't react to half my inputs. It slows down when I want to accelerate. It randomly takes a 90°-turn in an open field without me even touching the controller. It's unable to go faster than 2 km/h in forests (except in the very center of the "road"). Walking was often faster. In a game that is literally 50% riding, this can become a deal-breaker very quickly. Sure, a horse can have its own will, but this completely destroys any emotional connection with the horse I could have otherwise built.

    - Camera. Straight up the worst in the biz. Never have I experienced an ingame-camera even half that stubborn. Hell, most N64 games probably do better. The camera always tries to move to a "cinematic" point of view. That's generally not bad. Riding across a huge meadow can look stunning; having it zoom out while climbing a colossus breathtaking. But 99% of the time, it's just annoying. Even when trying to adjust it manually, the camera fights you. It always pans to a more impractical position. It doesn't help that the direction of climbing (on fur, for example) depends on how the camera is positioned. If it's turning all the time - which it often does when mounting a colossus, without the player getting much control over it - the left stick will have to be yanked in different directions countless times, just to move in ONE direction.
I could rant on, but I think the point came across.

Overall the experience could be described as this: I was not fighting the Colossi. I was killing them, but only through fighting the controls and the camera. I simply don't see that as justified for a modern game. Even a remaster such as this should have adjustments. Maybe even a toggle to switch between old and new controls/camera?

Finally, if the problems were the same in the original, I see how people call this a great remaster (I guess). So if you've loved the original despite the controls, by all means play this remaster. It's just that in this day and age, there is no way I can recommend it on its own.

The atmosphere is on point, but I found the rest of the experience not as rewarding as most players. Sure, exploring a mostly empty world would have been nice, but I guess I was looking for more impressive vistas or things to discover.

I tried hard on this one, but the camera was just infuriating! I defeated the first time and then gave up, climbing walls looking for monsters and the ever nauseating camera made my head hurt! Just my opinion though, if so many people liked it maybe it is great, but didn’t work for me!

Potentially a decent game hindered by a dodgy camera. I felt nothing during my playthrough. Padded rise and repeat. From a visual angle it has an original(ish) look. Some of the boss fights were fun. Most were frankly dull. No challenge here either. Amazed so many critics appear to think this is a PS4 classic. Nothing to see here, not for me anyway.

I really get why so many people gave low such low grades to the game. I mean, it really felt like a scam when I passed the first four colossi.
The game does not have much more to offer than great landscapes and half-epic, half-puzzly boss fights.
The gameplay and controls are kind of messy. The game repeats itself a lot. And it is very shameful that I can't enjoy more of that cute

I think I've been kind of deceived by the great reviews the game got everywhere. So I'm giving it an average grade to try and warn potential unaware buyers !

But then again, this is not by any means a 90+ game, mainly because of one single fact that's like an elephant in the room that nobody talks about...

And it's not the soulless main character that looks like the singer from a k-pop band, neither is the excellent musical score, nor the gorgeous -although empty- lands you traverse, nor is the short length of the game (clocking at about 8 hours in my first ever playthrough)... no. It's the goddamned controls.

I can't recall in my 30+ years as a gamer such awful, infuriating and bland controls - both when just fighting or platforming but also while on the horse. It's just a nightmare. It basically breaks & ruins the experience. I think 30% of my runtime was unwillingly falling off cliffs, bumping into walls & rocks, etc. It's infuriating, awful & frustrating - and totally disruptive of an otherwise sweet experience.

I totally wanted to finally play this game after so many years, so I did. It has its enjoyable moments, and certainly has something to offer... but beware: you'll be screaming & cursing at your screen like you're watching the World Cup final.

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
I would like to write this review starting from the fact that I have played ICO but not the original Shadow of the Colossus for ps2. In addition, I have played the game for about fifteen hours and got the platinum.

    IMMERSION:
    The game starts in a desolate land in which we and our horse are the protagonists and soon we realize that very few other life forms are present;
We are immediately given our mission: defeat all the colossus, useful to achieve a certain end, easily guessed from the first minutes of the game.

    TO THE EYE:
The real strength of this game is the art direction. It has really been taken seriously, referring with magnificent glimpses to real existing works of art and natural places. Every second spent galloping through these lands makes the player feel more and more insignificant compared to the giant mountains, grasslands and pits. If we want to put a point on the graphics, it is nothing extraordinary and we often run into buggy shadows and lights.

    TO THE EAR:
Shadow of the Colossus certainly offers several noteworthy soundtracks, but unfortunately it does not boast a satisfying variety and we will often find ourselves listening to the same ost over and over again.

    GAMEPLAY:
Also in this aspect, unfortunately, the game does not offer much variety and the things to do can be counted on the fingers of one hand; apart from the obvious colossus hunting we can try our hand at so-called time attacks, that is, a trivial time trial against the colossus; we can immerse ourselves in the memories of the protagonist, making us fight the same colossus again; we can hunt for lizards and fruits to increase our survive ability and finally it is possible to try our hand at playing the game's higher difficulties.

    ACHIEVEMENTS:
Fortunately, in the remake version of the game, the trophies have been changed and now getting the platinum is no longer an adventure that requires hundreds of hours; apart from finishing the game in speedrun and without ever dying, the only stubborn challenge is to complete the time attacks in normal and hard, given the clunkiness of the gameplay.

    BUT WHY 5?

    CONS:
The answer is easy, this is the third edition of this game, it is supposed to be a remake but, apart from the mere aesthetic and obvious render side of the game, it has a whole host of problems that, for a 2018 game, should not exist. Starting with the obvious horse mechanics, which are really clunky, slow and stupidly poorly programmed, which more than once will get us stuck on some rock or have us flog our horse in a fury of triangle spamming, the game itself is really clunky, even in the combat phases, the main mechanic of the game; there are countless times where we will see our character get stuck in walls, in colossus, fly away for no reason, die in outrageous ways and so on. Let's not even mention the AI of enemies that very often leaves something to be desired. (Don't get me wrong, the original game the 9 deserves it all).
Most of the times you will be fighting with the camera clipping into walls and colossus instead of fighting them.
Finally, the story is really trivial and forgettable and it probably has fewer dialogue lines than this review!

    PROS:
Not to repeat myself, the good parts are obviously the music and these damn gorgeous landscapes! Man how beautiful it is.

I was honestly very excited to try it. I had already experienced Sony's storytelling on its more modern kins in the likes of The Last of Us or Horizon: Zero Dawn. I was, however, cautious, as I knew this was essentially still a PS2 game.

Still through those lenses, I cannot say it's a good game. The controllers (supposedly improved) feel bad, camera is awful, the bosses, while being the best part, were only fun until I figured out how to get on them. I get that it's a game that it's supposed to make you feel sad and guilty, but the only time it managed to do it was nearly the end, and I would call that time just plainly cheating.

I cannot help to compare to other games from that generation like Zelda: Wind Waker on the GameCube, the first two Yakuza games on PS2, or even Phantom Dust in the original Xbox, that managed to be better than Shadow of the Colossus on, essentially, every single aspect.

I will say the premise of the story is intriguing. However, any redeeming qualities of this game are offset by the most atrocious and poor control scheme I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing in a game. Quite simply, this game is not fun whatsoever. The horse navigation makes no reasonable sense. Accelerating and decelerating the horse takes several seconds, and turning is either too slow or too fast. The bulk of colossus battles are climbing up onto them to find their weak points. But this becomes an absolute chore because of the absolute poor control scheme and it's similarly atrocious camera. Often times I would fall off if I let go of R2 for even a split second and would then have to climb my way up again. What should be a fun battle against a giant majestic beast quickly devolves into an uninspiring repetitive task. I tried to like this game, I really did. But it's just not fun. 4/10. Expand

The frame rate on the standard PS4 leaves a lot to be desired and its as if you're playing with an incredible amount of input lag. I do remember it being somewhat hard to control originally and having a low framerate on the PS2 but perhaps these problems were worse than I remembered. That said controlling the game is NOT an enjoyable experience in any way shape or form and in my honest opinion these are problems that should have been fixed or revised for a brand new release. I think the controls are not acceptable and that's that. Some have said that they are intentional and that is were the challenge lies but I think these are controls that could have been improved by leaps and bounds. Seeing the Last Guardian has exactly the same problems I'm more inclined to think it doesn't matter that much to the developers or they are simply incompetent in that aspect. But saying it is an gameplay design decision to have clunky controls doesn't hold up to me. I honestly think the controls of the original PS2 games were not this bad but I could be wrong. Having enjoyed the original game and actually being enthralled with it and played many many hours of it, coming back to it in this remaster doesn't evoke the same feeling I originally had. Expand

Sure the main character is evil for killing the monsters to revive a dead girl but what else is there. Your trying to revive a girl by slaying oversized monsters and must kill them all to bring back the girl and finish the game but to do it you have to travel on horse where there is no obstacles at all accept for oversized bosses a few ground enemies or additional content would have in my opinion helped the game , this is why i hated shadow of colossus in 2005 and why i still hate it now. I guess i could give it another go and this is really a review for the 2005 version not this version so meh. It had nice graphics for ps2 game but the lack of anything to do and no direction on where to find the big monsters sucked. The camera swings around wildly, making it difficult to steer the horse in a straight line, gaining and losing speed is arduous, and just nothing about point A to point B made me think wow.

There were several bosses where the events would not trigger properly; one particular boss towards the end of the game tells you to get to higher ground. After baiting the boss into hitting pillars maybe 20 times, the event finally triggered, and a way opened up for me to progress the fight. This was of course after I’d exhausted all other options, as the event hadn’t triggered the first time I tried; it’s deeply dissatisfying knowing your initial solution was right, but the game hadn’t responded to your actions.

Unless you have a deep set love for this game, I’d recommend giving it a miss. I’m not thoroughly convinced I should’ve bought this game, never mind for £30. You can get bigger and better adventures for less money. The developers failed to change the shortcomings in light of modern technologies and progression, and ultimately produced what feels like at best the concept for a game. It doesn’t even seem like the best version of itself.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics-7/10
The graphics werent bad, but I've seen better. Compared to others like The Last of Us or Halo SotC falls short for a 2018 remaster. Details in the surroundings and accessories are lacking. With the amount of time that Wander uses his unique sword, Id have expected more details and intricacies. Look at Ellie's special switchblade, while basic in design and quite frankly generic, it has a great amount of detail giving it a unique presence. Although this might be an unfair comparison I would say that Skyrim, modded, bests SotC in graphics even being released 5 years prior.

    Art-6.5/10
Many people said the art of SotC was astounding and I wanted to believe them. First run through, I would agree that the scenery is nice, but it quickly grew old. Running across the same field and fighting the Colossi, sometimes in all too similar arenas, takes away from the individuality of the bosses. Colors are also dull and muted. The Colossi themselves have an interesting design and do themselves justice in that aspect. The architectural formations seen on the beasts is fantastic and begs questions, but for all of the commotion about the art, I would say SotC also fell short in that aspect. IMO, If you are looking for a game with extraordinary scenery, Horizon Zero Dawn does a much better job of displaying nature and wildlife.

    Story-2/10
SotC has virtually no storyline. The two points are awarded simply b/c they told the character what he was doing and why. But they give no real reason or backstory as to why the player should really care. There are too many questions and not enough answers. IMO, the Dark Souls series does a much better job of creating questions and letting the audience dig for answers which can be found by talking to other NPCs or reading descriptions of items obtained throughout the journey.

    Character Development-0/10
Development of the one character that SotC focuses on is also nonexistent. With hardly any dialogue, the main character, known as Wander (not revealed in game), feels distant from the player. There was no connection between Wander and myself while playing, and his quest to resurrect the girl Mono (also not revealed) definitely did not feel as important as Wander makes it out to be.

    Ending - 3/10
IMO, the ending was a huge letdown. Wander dies, but honestly who cares? The game made no effort to forge a bond with him. The moment when Agro (his horse and the only name revealed in-game aside from Lord Emon) dies, all I thought was, "damn, guess its on foot from here." Even Wander is hardly phased by the "death" of his companion. The last fight was also a major downer because it gives the illusion that you can control the outcome, in reality, all Emon does is chuck a sword in a pond and you're done for.

    Difficulty-4/10
As the game is a puzzle type, I expected a more thought-provoking challenge. The bosses themselves arent difficult to defeat, and in fact, the most difficult part is just having enough stamina to hang on while they try a sad attempt to shake you off. Reaching a boss takes all of five minutes, and while I admit that there were a few that stumped me, they are ultimately copies from one boss to another. All that differs is the placement of vitals. I got more satisfaction from playing other puzzle games like Portal, and Trine and for much less money.

    Soundtrack-5/10
The soundtrack was good, but to me, there was not enough variation in the boss tracks. This detracts from their uniqueness and it was also poorly implemented as the music was barely audible when fighting, taking away from the intensity.

    Background Noise-1/10
From what I remember the air was stagnant. Barley any wind, ambient water noise, or animals, no rustling tree leaves, and two voice lines for saying HYA and calling Agro. Hitting your sword on different objects made no difference, Agro must have been of steel or something b/c thats what it sounded like.

    Price-7/10
I bought the game for $28, preowed. Not bad a price for a PS4 game, but after finishing it for the first time I realized I wouldnt have payed this much had I known what I was in for. At most I would probably have paid $10. To calculate if a game is worth its price I compare dollar value to hours played. I generally believe a game to be worth it when the hours played equals the dollar value, unless it has exceptional gameplay, story, characters, etc. For SotC however, I put in about 7 hours before completing the story. The other factors IMO are not enough to make up for the difference.

    Overall Game-play - 3/10
The overall is low. With little satisfaction and replay value SotC is not a game I would recommend. I could spend twice as much on a different game and get an experience 10x greater. The story is not very interesting and is very confusing due to a lack of in game explanation. None of this is to say that you shouldnt buy the game, but this is just my strong opinion

I can see why some people consider this to be a great game. The setting, the music, and the colossi are all well crafted. The battles can be pretty engaging and there is a sense of reward that comes with taking down each colossus. In that regard, there is some enjoyment to be had with this game. In that regard, there is some enjoyment to be had with this game. However, despite the praise this game gets, I wouldn't recommend it. In fact, I was having a hard time enjoying myself for the majority of the campaign. The controls are horrible, you have little to no control over the camera and I found myself frustrated with these two mechanics more than anything throughout my playthrough. Navigation is also poor. You may be going in the right direction yet still get lost without knowing where you made a wrong turn. It also doesn't help that your horse handles like crap. In regards to the colossi, once you've figured out how to defeat one, the act of actually taking it out is pretty simple and not very fun. This basically sums up the entire experience for me, lacking in fun. If you're looking for something different than your typical open-world action/adventure, this might be something you'll enjoy. But I would warn those who are considering picking this up due to the high praise this game has gotten over the years: this game is a very acquired taste. I'd argue that the gameplay is the game's weakest feature, and if a game is no fun to play, what's the point? Expand

    Didnt aged well.
Riding the horse is a pain in the ass most of the time.
    Very repetitive.
    Physics doesnt look real.
    Absolutely overrated
But the game is kinda beautiful and poetic

By far one of the most pointlessly frustrating games I have ever played. The controls and camera break the game for me. I spent most my time flailing around holding r2 on the colossus. The character is SO HARD TO CONTROL it takes all the fun out of this game. You waste so much time not because of your skill but because of how they made the character move and climb and hold on surfaces. It's such a shame because the rest is nice but if you can't control the character you're playing, it's not worth it

Nothing special. The plot is not interesting, the setting and world is empty theres nothing to do besides this collosi killing. By today's standard and comparing to other available games, this game is bad and boring. The control and camera is so bad and stupid

Fun for a while but too hard, only worth playing if free, graphics look ok, not much story though

It's less than "ok". Feels like playing a better version of Pong. Same story, equal gameplay. Working on my pile of shame, but this game is a shame and absolutly overrated!

I'll give it 3 because it looks nice. This is like a poor man's Tomb Raider with no enemies and a few big bosses. I was roaming around and found the first 2 Colossi and nothing else. Well, I did find clunky controls. Not much to do other than snore.

How could you even think of releasing a game with such a bad camera and bad character controls? 20 years ago Nintendo showed the world how to ride a horse in a video game and the programmers of this game learned nothing from it. Perfectly polished and improved cult game – even with better controls! Killing giant monsters has never been so much (melancholic) fun. [Issue#283]

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
