This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Shadow of the Colossus is a pretty good game. Beautiful graphics, boss and world design is epic. The camera is finicky and weird which does end up screwing me over. And basically everything in the entire game I hate is with Celosia the 11th colossus. That annoying “colossus.” ITS TINY AND FAST AND ATTACKS FASTER THAN YOU CAN RECOVER. IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE A COLOSSUS SAME GOES FOR CENOBIA. Other than that I recommend this game. Don’t get it for anything over $15. Expand

Ever since i heard shadow of The colossus was getting a remake i was overjoyed. I couldn't be happier that this remake happened. The graphics, sound, everything has been remade running on a brand new game engine entirely. But the camera and controls was the worst thing have i see in a video game.

This game is good. Just a couple gripes with this one. I got really bored when I would try to find each Colossus. but once you get to there the game becomes fun. All of the bosses where a good challenge. only a couple frustrated me. (The Turtle (9) and the Warrior (3)). The ending was also really weird. other than that, I recomend that you try it

There is an atmosphere of sadness and beauty in this game that leaves you thinking about it long after you've put the controller down. Could it be longer? Yes. Could there be more variety to the gameplay? Sure. But this game is unapologetic on what it is, and that's sort of the reason why it's so special.
It's the first time I really caught myself having to re-evaluate the fact that i can't judge something based on what i wish it was, and instead accept it for what it is. And if you do that, you're in for a very special ride.

My complaint with this remaster is its controls, as if they just left the clunky controls from the original game. The game's certainly not for everyone but it can be enjoyed as a work of art. And as a example of perfection of soundtrack and art direction in video games.

Ahh yes... The game of climbing and stabbing. And baiting. And exploring.

To cut straight to the chase, this game does have a very cinematic feel while having very little dialogue or character interaction. And honestly, that's a big part of the game's charm. That, and these large, beautiful environments it would be a dream to be able to visit. The dynamic of exploring a peaceful landscape and then trying to slay a mountainous creature does feel quite epic; Sort of a calm before the storm on repeat. Personally, I don't have a problem with the controls most of the time, and I do think this is a very engaging experience that's worth playing all the way through once (which can take 5-10 hours if you aren't trying to speed-run it). Personally, I recommend doing hard mode right away as it just simply adds more weak points and lowers your attack power, so you may need to apply more strategies that you wouldn't in normal mode.

Overall, each of these colossi is a very distinct, and mostly well-done boss fight. While they all require stabbing weak points repeatedly while holding on, trying to anticipate the next major movement that may attempt to shake you off like a flee on a dog, actually reaching these points requires unique strategies to be able to reach. To top off the praise for this game, the orchestral music is very fitting, and the ending gave me some feels in a very unique and memorable way.

Now the downsides... There are definitely some major downsides that make this game occasionally very frustrating, particularly if you're trying to play it in Time Attack on Hard mode, which reveals the singular overarching issue here: This game is better at being an interactive experience rather than a traditional game. The difficulty curve is generally okay, but there're a handful of bosses that are just frustrating to try to manipulate properly, VERY SPECIFICALLY: #9 (where you need to make a hot spring hit its belly), #4 (where you need to bait a giant horse to lower it's head), and #12, because I just watched this guy go all the way to the opposite end of the map while I was firing arrows at him, like wtf... Also #10 requires shooting arrows while riding away from it, which isn't very intuitive since I can easily run into a pillar without realizing it's there (I do still think it's fun despite this). Aside from those handful of errors, I generally enjoy finagling my way through these, it just gets VERY frustrating when it doesn't want to work with you in Time Attack.

To top off the negative aspects of this game, they really should just call the main character Stumble instead of Wander, considering how the slightest movements can make him fall over (which cuts into grip regen time). Momentum manipulation can lead to some interesting speed-run tactics, but there're a good few times where I really don't think my character should've gone the way they did. Plus, there aren't really enough grip points in the normal map. And lastly, I actually think being able to press a button to focus the camera on either the colossus or your horse Agro is exactly the way the camera should function, BUT sometimes it just gets caught in inconvenient locations, like: In #12, while I'm trying to get on top of it's head, half the time the camera gets stuck on its shoulder and I can't actually tell if I'm at the right angle to pull myself up. Still, it's nowhere near as bad as Super Mario 64, and people love that game.

Most of these issues may seem big, but they're ultimately minor in that they don't actually break the game or totally ruin the gameplay experience. This is still strongly recommended for anyone still interested after reading this. I would not recommend this to someone who's only interested in action-heavy, grindy games, though.

Still, I just didn't feel compelled enough to keep trying, and the way the game is designed, there's not much to do aside facing those single enemies.

So first I'll concede that the game is bleakly beautiful, atmospheric, sad, mysterious, and all the other words reviewers have used in their ecstatic paeans to its apparently undeniable brilliance. It's all those things, yes. And the remaster is astonishing: it's now one of the best looking games on the PS4, not just artistically speaking(because it was always beautiful from an artistic standpoint, even back on PS2), but technically speaking too. The detail, the textures, the animation; it's all fantastically impressive, and frankly light-years ahead of anything Team Ico have ever done, including The Last Guardian. The fur on the Colossi is particularly lovely. Makes you want to grab a hunk of it and bury your face in it.
It's a unique game, and it's been extremely influential too - this can be seen in the number of developers that have incorporated 'colossi' of their own into their games(even the great Nintendo paid homage with the four Beast-dungeons in Breath of the Wild.), or the reach of the tonal aesthetic of the game - the relentless use of SotC's muted palette in so many subsequent AAA releases, a kind of bleached, muddy, grey-brown look that arguably influenced the look of games as different as Gears Of War and Killzone.
It's an atmospheric game, but in many ways it's not entirely enjoyable to play - there is a loneliness to it all, a sense of crushing solitude that remains unbroken throughout. The hills, the mountains and rivers, lakes and seas, have their own looming presence, like they're watching you from a distance. It's slightly spooky to wander a land in which almost all life, certainly all human life, is absent. A few scurrying lizards and the occasional bird are all you'll see, besides your horse and the colossi themselves. I personally think it requires a reasonably happy mindset to play it. I wouldn't want to play it at a low moment that's for sure.
But like I said, after all the positives there is one issue that comes close to ruining the game, and it's not just a problem in SotC - all Team Ico's games suffer from it: The controls in this game are appalling. I've been playing The Last Guardian recently and the controls in that are probably slightly worse, but in tLG at least you're not tasked with anything too demanding or finicky. In SotC however, you are required to climb the colossi, and jump back and forth between parts of their body, all while hanging on to particular handholds, all while your stamina meter gradually dwindles away, at which point you drop to the ground. There are platforms located on the colossi at certain points, but the motion of their movements tosses you into the air and sends you flying around in unpredictable ways. Having fought the third colossus(MILD SPOILER), a huge figure who smashes his sword into the ground allowing you a moment to scamper up it and grab onto his lovely fur, I fell to the ground so often, and generally for no reason except the appalling controls. At one point, after I'd almost killed him, I was attempting to get back on, and the tremor from a single footstep knocked me to the ground. At this point, and for no apparent reason, it takes ten seconds for me to get to my feet, during which time the colossus has lifted his sword and smashed it down onto my tiny frame, killing me.
The game is full of moments like this - inexplicable moments of frustration, a commingling of bad game design and bad controls, and it's gotten to the point where I can't just shrug it off and say 'that's Team Ico for you'. It shouldn't be like that - they've had so long to get the controls in their games right, and even after the insane delays to tLG it somehow handled worse than their previous games did. This remaster is brilliant in so many ways, but the most important thing that could have been dealt with has been left intact, and it suffers for it. I don't blame Bluepoint for not dealing with the controls - it would have required extensive reworking of the actual game's structure and even the environments and colossi themselves, because the controls are so integral. And the admittedly beautiful animation wouldn't be half as beautiful if the controls had been rejigged to make them responsive. In fact, I think that's the reason the controls are so bad - Team Ico are obsessive about animation, and the length of the animations in their games precludes responsive controls. In this sense they've put the beauty of the game ahead of controls, and there's only so long they can keep on doing it before people turn on them.
It's no longer acceptable, and there's no reason you can't have a beautiful game that handles well. Uncharted manages it. SotC doesn't, and for that it deserves more criticism than it's received. It's wonderful, unique game, but no-one should go into it unaware of just how bad it handles.

What could've been one of my most memorable gaming experiences turned out to be one of the most disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I still thought Shadow of the Colossus was a good game, but I did not understand where the game's status as a "masterpiece" came from.

As far as the positives with this game go, the game looks absolutely stunning, and is one of the most visually appealing games ever released. Also, the attention to detail within the world's landscapes is amazing, and it really makes the whole world feel alive. Finally, I really liked how the game took a non-traditional method to storytelling, and rather than relying on constant dialogue and cut scenes, the game tells its story through the actions of the player.

Even though there are a lot of positives about this game, there are quite a few negatives that I simply cannot ever look past. First of all, the gameplay and controls both feel very clunky and unresponsive. This may have felt just fine in 2005, but in 2018, when we have games with advanced physics engines and tighter controls, this game's controls stick out like a sore thumb. Also, I found very few of the colossi to be genuinely fun and entertaining to take down, those being Avion, Phalanx, and Dirge, while the rest either felt decent at best or insanely frustrating at worst (Celosia). But quite possibly the worst of all, this game has very little replay value. What I mean by that is, once you've beaten the game once, there is no reason to back and play the game a second time, as it will be the exact same thing. So unless you really enjoyed playing through the game, I can't recommend you play through the game more than once, and I don't ever see myself playing through this game again.

In conclusion, Shadow of the Colossus is certainly a good game and one I recommend everyone tries out once throughout their life. But even so, the game is incredibly flawed and far from a masterpiece, at least in my opinion.

SoTC is a good game, but the core gameplay is pretty shallow if you ask me. You beat the game once and there is basically no reason to play it again since there is only one tactic per a boss. Still, I would recommend it because it's a decent game and it's pretty cheap.

7/10 is a good game for me. Not bad, not very good.

Obvious things: this game is beautiful. Period. This game is different than most of the games on the market. Open question: does 'different' mean 'good' by definition?

Sadly, I've found this game quite boring. To reach the Colossi takes 10 minutes of very-nice-views-but-nothing-more. To beat the Colossi it's either directly-obvious-what-to-do or frustratingly-non-obvious. The difficulty level is uneven and I've found some middle-Colossi to be the most challenging.

The story is virtually non-existent. For ~8h of play there is nothing. The ending is open, which is cool when you have observed character development for x hours, but with no background it makes it even more empty.

Some reviews point to the "uncomfortable feeling when killing innocent Colossi". I kind of missed that as well.

It's a nice game, but it's far from 9.0 score.

If you are looking for "something completely different" but "with deep story" and possibly "for mature people" I highly recommend "Everybody's gone to the Rapture".

By your side you have your noble horse, named Agro, and you’re equipped with a sword and bow and arrow to aid you in your fight. The graphics on the PS4 are a nice improvement, but unfortunately, the controls don’t match up. Agro steers terribly and will absolutely not cooperate with you in forests. Also, while in a battle with a Colossi, she will refuse to come to you when you call her, forcing you to chase her down and mount her yourself. However, she is a nice companion and good at getting places faster. She will be useful in battles with Colossi, where she can evade attacks such as fireballs with a speed quicker than the human player owns. I have to give the game credit for creating unique designs for each of sixteen Colossi. The game also gives you the option to switch your controls around (for example: “classic” controls can be switched to the remake’s controls, or can be kept as classic for those who are familiar with the 2005 controls). With each Colossi, a unique challenge is presented, and although the end goal is always the same, getting to the magic sigils on the Colossi is different every time. It’s getting to the sigils and effectively taking them out that is the most exciting during the battles. After a long, hard fight with a raging Colossi, the final stab and freezeframe is a great reward for your troubles. Expand

However the game is rather linear because you can only fight one colossi at a time which leaves you not really exploring the world around you. Moreover the climbing function can get very jarring on some colossi, namingly Malus, which is disappointing considering it is the last colossus in the game. But the excitement the game fills you with when approaching a colossi for the first time and the puzzles that need solving are actually intriguing and fills you with a sense of accomplishment once you figure them out. Stunning visuals, great story, I can see why someone would love this game in the ps2 era but the gameplay hasn't aged all that well, the controls are abysmal and the gameplay at its core requires a lot of patience. Still im overall positive about this game although it is very likely that won't be coming back to it.

Boring game for my taste. The graphics are great, the environment beautiful, but the controls over the horse sucks, the camera control sucks and the Colossus are easy to kill. The hardest part is to find the Colossus. This game are for the people that like the explorer and contemplate the environment.

The story in Shadow of the Colossus is slightly ambiguous, but the vast, empty environments and the melancholic atmosphere make up for the story's ambiguity. Overall, it's a surprisingly decent story even if it's absent for the most part.
Unlike the story though, the gameplay is very basic, even though it's oddly enjoyable and satisfying.
The Colossi are absolutely spectacular; they're undoubtedly the highlight of the game, alongside the immense scale of the game and its gorgeous environments.
Also, the music is really good and the audio design is fantastic.
However, even though the gameplay is interesting, the repetitious nature of the gameplay loop gets slightly boring after a while, and the controls, camera and handling are so clumsy and bad in some instances, they make the game almost unplayable at times, ruining the entire experience, and that's very unfortunate.

    Pros:
    + Serviceable narrative
    + Exciting albeit basic gameplay
    + Immense scale
    + Stunning visuals
    + Great music

    Cons:
    - Tiring gameplay loop
    - Very awkward controls, camera & handling

    Narrative: 6/10
    Gameplay: 4/10
    Music: 8/10
    Graphics/Audio: 9/10

    Final Rating: 6.5/10
    - Pretty Good -
Shadow of the Colossus looks like a PS4 game, however, it still plays like a PS2 game, unfortunately.
Regardless, it's a very unique and special experience even to this day... I just expected something more from a high quality modern Remake.

    Do I recommend it?:
If you're looking for a fun videogame experience, I probably wouldn't recommend it, but if you're looking for a unique videogame experience, I'd say yes.

Ah yes, THIS game. A classic undeniably. This remake went above & beyond to push the PS4 to its limit that’s for sure. Very few games out now look better than this one! But as I’ve said before, I’m horrible at games where you’re left to your own devices to figure out what to do next & especially puzzles & that’s basically the meat of this game lol. It’s a big boss rush essentially, with each boss being their own puzzle. Getting to some of them can be a pain, as well as figuring out how to take the colossi down. The horse you ride on being realistic is well.. annoying. Idk about you but I play games to not be IN REALITY. So any mechanics like that are always unwelcome to me. Those are a few gripes I had, but overall the frustration doesn’t outweigh the enjoyment I had trekking across this mysterious land to get to the next colossi. What could possibly go wrong in the end? Expand

The world and story are excellent. An amazing experience. Bosses are all unique which makes it fun to figure out the puzzles they present. However, the controls are incredibly outdated and clunky which decreases the overall quality of the game significantly.

Overall it's a nice game. I personally like remakes of game of the old days. But I personally think this game is in a way a bit hyped. I did not feel too much excitement while playing it. The atmosphere and game-play were a bit boring for me. So this is one of the few games I stopped playing before finishing.

A lot of the fights are more frustrating than fun. The solutions for the fights (or interaction with the world) are not consistent - sometimes environment is destructible sometimes not, so it's often more trial and error than anything else. After finding out what to do I finding myself more face palming than feeling smart.

You have basically 16 gimmick fights, that's it. I could live with that if the fights where really good but too many are not. Pretty short too, took me about 9 hours to complete.

A CÂMERA É HORRÍVEL!!!

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
