    It's a monster-hunter-like game.
This game is never an RPG game.
You can't get weapons or equipment, you can't decorate your character.
Nevertheless, what is popular is that it creates a spirit of challenge that constantly challenges people.
The difficulty of this game is as difficult as dark soul or SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE.

What was all ready my favorite game just built up to look excellent. Unlike other games it doesn’t shove enemies in your face to keep you interested but rather thinks of you as a smart player which is rare now a days. The gameplay is excellent, the story is simple but excellently crafted and the only complaint would be the camera angles, which is still improved from previous versions.

My favourite game ever, the way it makes you feel the bad guy as you progress the game while actually having good intentions is paired with the awesome colossi fight.

Some people complain about the controls of Agro but it's meant to be difficult to force an actual animal to make some things. Player controls were a little clunky on PS2 but the remake is amazing.

However, everything else in this game is stunning. Shadow of the Colossus is a clever inversion of the trope of giant slaying; something normally seen as an impossible, valiant feat. Yet here, it's this horrifying, dreadful task. Your own self interests lead you to slay these innocent beasts, most of which don't attack you on their own will. After defeating one, the game gives you a breather, almost to force you to reflect on the egregious action you just committed. The point where the final colossus looks at you, seeing its enemy as a living, breathing thing is just magical. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An absolutely great remake. Visually gorgeous, it retains the spirit of the original.

Shadow of the Colossus tells us the story of Wander, one man ready to risk everything in order to save Mono, whose fate is told to be cursed and who had been sacrificed because of it. Wander travelled to forbidden lands with his horse Agro, where lives a godlike entity, Dormin, able to revive dead people, in exchange of one service. Destroying 16 idols, each of them corresponding to one colossus. As a player, you have to defeat them all.

To do so, you have to find them first, in these open yet empty lands. As a gps, you have your sword, who reflects light towards the next colossus. Once there, you'll have to think on how to climb on them, and stab them to death in their weak spots. Colossi are not bosses, but levels, puzzles, that you'll have to solve in order to vanquish them. The plot is very simple, it is a remaster of "the hero going to save the princess from the dragon", but it is told very efficiently, with a simplistic yet strong narration, and a few more subtleties. Each colossus death feels like a murder, the death of something greater than you, who fell because of an egoist desire. One frag brings more sorrow than joy. The game ends with an masterpiece of a final scene, which deserves to be played / seen once.

The soundtrack was one of the best ever made in a video game, and still is in 2020. Grandiose, in perfect harmony with the epicness of the fights. A classic.

Like each of Fumito Ueda's games, it plays oddly, like almost nothing else. Wander is weak, vulnerable and has little balance when on colossi, Agro might be tricky to control, as you're not controlling directly the horse, but the rider controlling the horse. Gameplay choices, made to make you have a more complex feel of what you're doing, instead of creating fun and accessibility.

Probably not everyone cup of tea, but one very beautiful example of video game as art. If you're ready to put aside nowadays codes to play an old game who was bizarre even 15 years ago, go for it, it will most likely worth it. A great experience.

Camera do suck tho. But I never find it that constraining as some can say, whether it was in the original or in this one.

This game is a masterpiece. SImple. Everything is amazing about it, the story, the colossi, the characters, the gameplay. Though the camera is bad and the controls are questionable. The game is proof that games can be artwork, and a testament to the times when developers put more care into there games in trying to make something special rather than another hit free to play game. The game creates a perfect cycle of working with the story, and then using the time between Collosi to reflect on the tiny details the game gives you about its story, then relieving the boredom with a new collosus. Not only this, but the game has, in my opinion, the best ending in all of video game history. I would say more, but this game should be played with very, very, VERY little beforehand knowledge.

The Shadow of the Colossus game is a huge success from the PlayStation 2, the game got an HD version of the PlayStation 3 console, which did not make a significant change to the graphics but let new players be out of the game. And in 2018 we got a remake of a game created by Bluepoint games (the company that developed the collection of Uncharted games) so let's start with a review of the game Shadow of the colossus:

Plot - The plot in the game is simply excellent. Without making you spoilers I will just say that the plot of the game will arouse in you many emotions from designer to anger.
    Final score - 10/10 - Just a crazy plot.

Gameplay - The gameplay in a simple game is very excellent and creative, the game consists only of bosses but the bosses are like a puzzle that after you kill them you will feel a sense of satisfaction. The bosses in the game are not puzzles, they will also challenge your archery links and your tolerance.
Final score 10/10 - Simple gameplay is excellent.

Graphics - The graphics in the game are simply breathtaking even today in 2021. Bluepoint did a great job here with the graphics that make this game look like a game released today and not like a game released for the PlayStation 2.
Final score - 10/10 - Simply amazing graphics

To sum up the remake of Shadow of the colossus is a simply amazing remake, it's one of the best remakes I know, it's also one of the best games I've played in my life.
Final score - 10/10 - A simply amazing game, anyone who has a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 must get a copy of this game.

While this HD remake is conspicuously a labour of love, it lacks the transpiring astonishment that was so appealing in the original. I believe Bluepoint did a great job in bringing things back to life again and vastly upgrading the graphical quality, but they haven't quite nailed the art style of overexposure and the overall colour palette is either a hit or a miss. For instance, the rendition of the first colossus battle and the second one is a bit off the rail, for I don't get that kind of epicness in the original anymore. But the fights against Avion (the bird) and the last colossus feel right on the spot. I really wish they could have taken a closer look at the source material or perhaps a full supervision from Mr. Ueda would have made it work. Expand

The world is simple, yet very intricate and detailed. The actual gameplay consist of riding a horse, climbing colossi, and stabbing/shooting colossi. The story is extremely vague up until the very end. But even those things aren't what really make Shadow great, it's experiencing each one of these colossi without any clue how to bring them down. They are truly some of the greatest things to ever be put in a game. My only gripe would be the controls. I understand the excuse as to why they would be difficult to use, but it's still a pain in the neck. Expand

Fantastic game, and a masterful remake of an absolute classic.

Firstly, for the naysayers, and haters. The landscape in this game is not baron, it's artistic. Whilst this is subjective, the game was originally designed to be marveled at, and to enjoy the open landscapes. I remember on PS2 being blown away by how vast the expanding scenery was, and gave the world an ethereal feel to it.

This version of the game built on the back of that, and certainly delivered. The world feels magical and pulls you in to its mysticism. If it doesn't for you, then that's just an inability to appreciate the great atmospheric conditions provided by the developers.

The controls, were a bit tricky at times, which is why I took a point off, but they are by no means horrible. I was able to ride the horse fine without any real problems. Most of the time you're in open fields galloping, this is done purposefully to enjoy the view, and appreciate the world you've been thrust into.

The collosi are just, well, breathtaking. When you see them lumbering around, you really feel small and vulnerable, but at the same time, I feel a certain sorrow for them, I can't really explain it, it's just the way the game is cinematically presented to you.

The soundtrack only adds to the depth of the experience, and I remember the game as fondly as I did when I first picked it up on release for PS2.

To Summarize: If you have appreciation for more than just material content (I.E a million quests to do), and enjoy an artistic, and atmospheric experience where you fill in your own agenda with your imagination, then this is a title you will thoroughly enjoy. If however, you're not someone who can appreciate video games as an art form, or have little to no patience, then you're probably best avoiding the game. For most people this is a unique title, that very much deserves its praise, and I'm happy it's been made available for the next generation to enjoy in all its magnificence.

Shadow of the Colossus can be best described as a "boss rush game". The objective is to defeat 16 Colossi, ranging from bull-sized to titans standing 30 meters (100 feet) high, or giant creatures 200 meters (650 feet) long. There is an open map which you have to explore, with your magical sword guiding you to each Colossus after 5-10 minutes of traversal, but in-between there are no enemies of any kind. Each Colossus is a platforming puzzle you have to solve, with most Colossi featuring literal platforms on their body, and you defeat them by stabbing their weak points.

Bluepoint Games took the original game and remade all the graphics from the ground up. You can play the game at 1080p and 30 fps on the base PS4, but on PS4 Pro you can choose between 1080p and 60 fps or 1440p and 30 fps. The gameplay and AI behavior have been left untouched from the original, for better or for worse. Shadow of the Colossus can be beaten in ~6 hours, and even less than that if you already know what to do.

Shadow of the Colossus and its predecessor Ico paved the way for the rise of many artistic games with a minimalist narrative, left open to interpretation by the players. But unfortunately Bluepoint Games chose to ignore Ico altogether and didn't remake that one, too. Which is a shame because it's my favorite of the two. Still, I recommend anyone to play Shadow of the Colossus.

Big fan of SotC here who lost the fight against "common sense" and bought this game for the 3rd time!! haha!!

I wanted to come here to make a point on the game from a NON PS4 PRO user.
Seeing all the reviews and most of the previews being released shown for PS4 PRO, comparing the "performance" and "Cinematic" modes and all, got me a little worried on how well (or bad) the game would run on an Old, Vanilla, PS4 which is almost 4 years old now!

Well I gotta say I am impressed and count this game as one more game that DOESN'T convince me to get a 4K gaming grade TV and a PS4 Pro!
It runs very very VERY well even on regular PS4.
I tought I'd feel an urge, a need for 4k/PS4 Pro some time sooner or later but Sony seems to refuse to "lowball" us and make us feel like we HAVE to upgrade to actually enjoy current gen games!
To me, 4k/PS4 Pro right now could be considered like "Icing on the cake" which despite being enjoyable just doesn't feel smart if you're a bit tight on money!

Of course it won't support HDR, there'll be a little more aliasing but it's barely noticeable unless you get very very finicky about it!
So, all in all, I just downed 2nd Colossi and I'm enjoying it!

As for the game and the "remaking", somehow, I think there was a greater difference comparing the blurry and choppy PS2 graphics to the PS3 remaster than this remake here...
I may be wrong tho, it's been a while since I didn't play the game but in my memory, it seems like the PS3 version was already looking pretty good.

This PS4 remake isn't as jawdropping as let's say some very MAJOR remakes like the 1st Resident Evil which the total remake made it look like a totally different game...
It's a considerable rehaul but when taking Resident Evil in comparison, it is a little weak and underachieving.

    So, overall I'd give it a 8,5~9.0...
I wished they would've added some stuff since they sold us the idea that a "Remake" should be so much more than just a "Remaster".

No matter what, we want a Sequel to this or a game of the same genre!
In the meantime, I'll get back to it!

    Enjoy!

As a remaster/remake, this is an absolute beast of a game, the level of detail they put into every aspect of it is breathtaking.
But... there isn't anything new that wasn't in the PS3 HD or PS2 versions - apart from graphics - so if you didn't dig the game the first time then don't expect to like it now.

The only thing stopping me from giving this game a 10/10 is that sometimes I had problems with the camera when in tight spaces. Also the player character stays on the ground for an annoying amount of time when he is knocked down. This game is beautiful but it really shows its age with the icredibly clunky controls that can be frustrating at times. But its was still a very interesting experience.

A good story is essential to keep a lot of players interested in your game.

    Characters (0 to 20): 10
(This includes voice acting / animations and how they complement the story)
Even if your story is great, if the characters are un-interesting or just stupid in the context of the game, it will ruin the game. A good story-teller is at least as important as a good story.

    Gameplay (0 to 20): 20
(This includes combat/ movement and the way you interact in the world)
if you just want a good story with good characters alone, go watch a movie! Gameplay is one if not the most important part of a successful game.

    Design (0 to 15): 15 + Bonus 10
(This includes world design / character design / creative spin on common practices)
Everybody has seen a simple medieval castle / an ordinary zombie and an M16 AR. Keep things fresh and interesting, give game devs the freedom to give their personal spin on things.

    Bonus Ratings
    These are more personal.

    Soundtrack (0 to 15): 15
A great soundtrack is in my opinion a must for a 10/10.

    Replay/Endgame (0 to 5): 5
I like to play more even after the story has finished like side quests. I would also include side activities in games to this like; the last of us multiplayer or Doom’s map editor.

    Polish (0 to 5): 5
(Is it buggy or not? Do parts of the game feel rushed? But remember, bugs can be fixed)
Well do I have to explain? No one likes a buggy/leggy game. It breaks immersion and f%cks your play trough. I still have nightmares from the assassin’s creed “no face” bug…

    Extra:
They should have added a 17th colossus XD.

You could critique this game by saying there’s no equipment, magic, leveling, or crafting systems. But that’s where SOTC shines. it’s refreshing to sit down and enjoy a game that isn't so mentally stimulating. You have one thing to do, 16 times, and each battle is unique and amazing.

Personally I love the game and can look past some of the annoying things about it. But there are certainly some minor things that for some can kill their enjoyment of the game the biggest thing being the controls. I wouldn't say there bad but they do feel old which makes sense seeing as the game was originally on the PS2. The controls take some time to get use to but again I wouldn't call them bad except maybe the horse which was annoying to control the whole way through. What the game gets right is pretty much everything else though. The visuals on the PS4 are just breath taking when you first experience them. And the boss fights are mostly pretty good. It's like trying to solve a puzzle while also fighting a boss and I love that. Most of the Colossus are great other then maybe 2 of them who were fairly similar to each other. And the finale colossus was a little disappointing if I'm being honest. Along with all that the music is top notch and the story is interesting but also goes on the backburner for most of the game. Most of the plot happens at the beginning and the end of the game with little happening in between you slaying colossus. Which works for what the game is and also helps with the twist that happens by the end. In conclusion Shadow of the Colossus is certainly a unique game and I think that it's a game you should at least try to play once so long as you can deal with some weird controls. Expand

    Imprescindible.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Perfectly polished and improved cult game – even with better controls! Killing giant monsters has never been so much (melancholic) fun. [Issue#283]

A tribute to the Fumito Ueda will delight the veterans of the original game same as introduce this classic to the newcomers, who are not tuned on a nostalgic note. An ideal opportunity to improve your video game education and a wonderful experience in the same time. Some clumsy controls and occasionally stubborn camera can’t ruin the great experience.

It’s a good remaster, but frankly I find it unnecessary. Those who have already played the game on PS2 or PS3 will find nothing new here, and those who didn’t have the chance to get acquainted with it probably will not understand what we saw in Shadow of the Colossus 12 years ago, when gaming reality was completely different.
