Minecraft Story Mode adapts to the Telltale formula quite well and even though it doesn’t do much new, the complete series that contains episodes 1-8 is an enjoyable adventure, despite a slow start. I found the second half of the story more interesting than the first half, but the former half sets up the characters and that’s what makes the latter half so enjoyable.

Among the multiple licenses Telltale decided to work with Minecraft is probably the most difficult as the story must be created from scratchAmong the multiple licenses Telltale decided to work with Minecraft is probably the most difficult as the story must be created from scratch (like the main game), how did they fare in that exercise ?

Technically the game totally owns Minecraft artistic direction and every body will recognize those cubic forms. Sure it's not the most beautiful style possible but it respects the main material so we can't really complain about it. But what we can complain about it's the little glitches you'll be able to encounter here and here (bad subtitles, faulty audio, etc) there's just a few of them but it should have none in this kind of game.

The gameplay is like every interactive series you follow the story participating in the dialogues and therefore taking decisions (such as what kind of weapon you want to build or who's your best friend), it won't change the main events (I hope one day we will be able to really have an impact on everything) but it will change secondary things like your relationships or your appearance.

The story is divided in two distinct narrative arc : the first from episode 1 to 4 and the second from 5 to 8 which make the purchase of the three additional episodes pretty much mandatory if you want to have the end of the adventure (therefore be careful to buy the Complete Adventure and not the basic game). It has its moment (I even cried at episode 4) but its mostly fun and not to serious. They did a good job to create a nice universe (story wise) for Minecraft and it fully reaches its goal to provide a story mode for Minecraft. But don't expect to be blown away as some episodes don't have any big scenes you'll remember for years and globally most of the main characters lack charisma. Also all the episodes have a length of approximately 1 hour and a half, it's not a rip off but it could also be better like the two hours needed for every Tales From The Borderlands episode.

In conclusion Minecraft Story Mode by Telltale is just what you'd expect it to be, the license is respected and the story fits right in missing spot of the main game. But a few technical issues, the mandatory buy of the expansion and a story that lacks defining scenes don't make for true hit. Advisable only for Telltale fans (such as myself) or Minecraft fans that were longing for a story mode.
