I totally understand all the bad reviews about the game when it released. Micro transactions is the best way to ruin a videogame. However, after all the updates made about this situation, the game got way much better, I just finished it 2 days ago and I can say it is great, the nemesis system is greatly improved and the story expands the universe created by Tolkien. The game takes place in a vast open world, and the graphics are breathtaking, making players feel like they're truly a part of this fantastic universe. The combat system is refined and more challenging than its predecessor, with a variety of moves and abilities that give players greater control over their characters.

The Nemesis System, which was one of the defining features of the first game, has been expanded upon, allowing players to create their own unique army of orcs to take on the enemy forces. The addition of new orcs, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, makes the gameplay even more varied and exciting.

The story is engaging and well-written, and the characters are compelling. Fans of the series will appreciate the return of fan-favorites such as Talion, Celebrimbor, and Gollum, who are all voiced by excellent voice actors.

The game also has an incredible soundtrack that complements the action on-screen perfectly. The sound design is top-notch, and the game's atmospheric score adds to the immersive experience.

Overall, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a fantastic game that improves upon the already impressive Shadow of Mordor in almost every way. It's a must-play for fans of action games, open-world titles, and the Lord of the Rings franchise. With its compelling gameplay, excellent story, and engaging characters, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is a true gem that should not be missed.

As someone who completed Shadow of War 100%, this is the benchmark Lord of the Ring game with a good story, unique nemesis system, personality orcs that still amaze me, wonderful soundtrack, and all of my playthroughs. I beat the game on Nemesis Difficulty (Hard Mode), and even then, I didn't buy any microtransactions because the game is built on tactic and building the army of orcs to the end.

Fantastic game as previous one was! This game is more focused on nemesis systems and orc in general, which is definitely not bad thing but I wish the individual story was a little more polished. Because of this I will rate this as the previous game even if this one was improved. 9/10

One of the greatest games ever made! I have never been this addicted to playing a game in a long time. The Nemesis is honestly the greatest innovation in any video game ever, to this day. The complexity and thought put into the system are truly commendable and needs to be implemented into games more. I know the game is very known and popular, but it is still underrated in my opinion. I can understand the frustration with microtransactions in the early release of this game. I, however, got it on sale after the microtransactions were removed so I've only played this game is it currently is, and should have been from the start.

With that said, this is the best game that i've played on PS4. It's so polished, deep, and has a ton of replay value even after you beat it.

With that said, this is the best game that i've played on PS4. It's so polished, deep, and has a ton of replay value even after you beat it. The story mode of the game from what I remember (it's been a while since I beat it) was ok, but just doing the online fortress raids and continuing to strengthen my own armies is where I'm enjoying this game the most.

The depth of character and ability customization available in this game is impressive. So many different ways to build your character and minions, you can guarantee that your 'Bright-Lord' and his army are truly one of a kind. I played Shadow of Mordor and loved that game, and this one took the series to the next level entirely!

Shadow of War is a STEAL at the price it's going for these days, and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially fans of the Lord of the Rings movies/books.

*****This game no longer has microtransactions, which I believe was a huge issue many players had well before I picked this up.****

    PROS
+ Very interesting and engaging story
    + Great voiceovers
    + Fun missions
+ Fast paced, somewhat smooth and fun combat with many different ways to kill and damage enemies
+ The Nemesis system is much the same as in SoM but with more creative ways to manipulate Orcs
+ Genuinely funny dialogue from Orc captains

    CONS
    - The controls are quite honestly the worst I've ever suffered through. I'm not exaggerating. I played Brutal, which is the hardest difficulty, and while challenging, the most difficult part of the game was actually the parkour, especially trying to climb a monument to destroy it. It is incredibly sticky, nonresponsive, and unintuitive. You will climb onto the wrong ledge multiple times, either placing you right in front of an Orc you were trying to avoid or placing you in Orcs' sights while you're trying to evade archers.
    - If you dominate an Orc and move away from him, he'll revert back to hostile. This runs contrary to the idea you're creating an Orc army and doing so is a core mechanic of the game. If I wanted to dominate all archers in a fortress before attacking to give myself an advantage, I should be able to do that. Unfortunately, you can't.

It's clear that WB Games was the studio behind this because there were lots of things (like loading screens and the occasional taunt screens when you die) that were pulled straight from the Batman: Arkham games (hell, some of the Uruks/Ologs look like Joker Titans). There is also a lot of familiarity between this game and its predecessor, which I don't mind because I liked the first game. Some new mechanics, like online Vendettas and fortress assaults, can be fun, but are only minor additions.

There are lots of complaints about the microtranscations, which, frankly, I didn't even notice. Probably because I don't ever do micotransactions. In console games or in time-waster apps on my phone. That did not subtract for me.

The combat is still pretty fluid like the Batman:Arkham games, but they pretty much literally throw 40 enemies at you at the same time, which makes aiming your "execution" maneuver at the right baddie pretty difficult at times. The "getting ambushed by a Captain" quirk is cute at first, but sometimes, you get ambushed by one guy...start fighting him, then another shows up, and another. I did think it was cool when I was ambushed by three of my own "converted" captains as part of a "Rebellion," though. Probably because I'd converted every captain on that part of the map.

The maps are more detailed than the original - which isn't saying a lot because ME:SoM was bereft of pretty much anything resembling structures. The story tries to make sense by introducing Shelob (who looks like Kirstie Alley in her skinny Cheers days when she's not a spider) as a being looking to quell the power of Sauron. The game also throws in the fall of Minas Ithil, which apparently doesn't fit the timeline, Ringwraiths (who are bastards to fight), and traitors in all shapes and sizes.

The power-up system is far more fun this time around and you don't get all the power-ups by halfway through the game as in ME:SoM. And, you can tailor the power-ups based on your style of play. Personally, as a fan of hide and strike (and then hide again), I had fun winning a lot of my fights by poisoning grog barrels from afar and letting the enemy take itself out.

I suppose that's why I liked both of these games. If I was overmatched for a time, I could climb a wall or sprint out of the area and hide until I could heal and try again, maybe divide and conquer. This is a mechanic that is sorely lacking in many newer releases where you're pretty much in an arena with no way out and have to win the first time. Only in fortress raids, and in particular fortress throne rooms, is where you encounter the win-or-die...a la boss fight. (On an appropriate aside: the pit fights can be highly entertaining)

The graug mechanics are still stiff and the drake mechanics are probably a bit worse, while the catagor mechanics probably became a little too forgiving. Still, the standard difficulty is about where it should be and there will be a few frustrating deaths, but none that will make you want to give up on the game.

How grindy the game is is really up to you. You should be able to fly through the story pretty quickly, but the epilogue (where you have to defend all of your fortresses) DOES get grindy. You have to level up pretty high to be able to have the army of defenders you need. I tend to go around and get all the stuff in games (which helps leveling up), but I still needed a shave over 40 hours to complete the epilogue and get to Talion's ending.

Voice acting was mostly good again, particularly the leads. The monsters seem to, again, recycle the same 8 voices...and, my God, their monologues are SUUUPER long sometimes. You might be able to finish a captain in less time than it takes him to tell you all about how he's going to feed your guts to a catagor.

(Something that most folks won't care about but I thought was a nice touch: there is a nice tribute to a team member who passed away during production during the end credits.)

Expand

Played this after the microtransactions were removed and I have to say it's a pretty good game. It doesn't really improve the graphics of the previos game, which were good nonetheless, or the gameplay mechanics. It might become a little repetitive at some point, but the stpry is amazing, loved every bit of it.

Great game. The Nemesis system is still quite remarkable and it's surprising that no other game attempted to achieve something similar. Talion and Celebrimbor are great characters, and while the story is quite nonsensical if you try to put it in line with the books, it's still incredibly enjoyable. Can't wait to see what Monolith has in store next

Shadow of War really let the nemesis system shine and show the true potential of such mechanics. The fluid time events, how power works, special events such as a return from death or blood brother revenge, it all feels so alive. Although the controversy of micro transactions (which has now been resolved by Monolith by completely removing them) a lot of fans called this game "pay-to-win". This was not completely true, you could buy micro transaction, but they were not required to win, they honestly just led to an easier way to make your orcs powerful. it was not required for anything else. Anyway, its pretty petty to whine about such things in a game where it only matters in conquests and pit battles (conquest isn't even a huge benefactor either). But that is all in the past. As for the story... it was a little less involved than in the first game but it was on the right track. I appreciate the lore characters such as Shelob being major characters, and they all played some kind of role instead of just being there for show. The twist of the story was rather disappointing in the end for me but hey, others probably enjoyed it. Overall this game is a solid 8. Expand

The visual and graphics are phenomenal, beautiful, creepy, and cool especially the characters, the drakes, the caragors, the graugs, and Ghûls. I loved how real the people looked. The different areas were really real looking and looked so much like the scenery in the movies. The gameplay was remarkable especially the fighting, the drake riding, and the missions. The story and writing are terrific. I love to ride drakes and kill captains. The enemies are awesome. The voice over performances are fantastic especially the ones for Talion and Shelob. Another great thing about this game is its fortress battles which require a lot of planning and preperations. Its very original. Overal I highly recommand this game.

It was a great game. It had improve almost everything from Shadow of Mordor. The game is not true to the original source (books) but it has a good history eitherway. Yes loot boxes are a thing in this game but contrast to what all the salty reviewers looking to give this game a bad name for being greedy say, the loot boxes are a big issue, and aren't needed to experience the game as a whole. Onto the gameplay: the gameplay in Shadow Of War is rather rewarding to play, and defeating orcs has been refined since the first title. it may become a little repetitive after awhile, however for someone who is looking to enjoy the game (and not trying to savagely gut it for being a micro transaction game) it is easy to overlook. As a fan of the Middle Earth universe, the most offensive thing about the game is the story. it breaks the lore in every which way and has no respect for how rings function in this world. I won't go into more detail, lest I spoil anything. Finally, I'd like to briefly talk about the graphics. The graphics of shadow of war are stunning and are a massive improvement over the first title. Even if the occasional orcs body glitches, the graphics are still amazing and the glitches are minor.

Overall a very enjoyable experience thus far. If i had one recommendation to you it would be to ignore the salty reviewers who are only here to tear apart the game for having micro transactions and see what fun and beauty the game has to offer.

However I can't agree with a 3.6 so i'm trying to upvote it. There's tons to love about this game. Huge areas to explore with lots of missions and sidequests. There's not that much narrative drive throughout but the gameplay is really fun and i like some of the twists and turns even if it did kind of crap all over the lore.
I've finished the first 4 stages of the shadow wars end game (there are ten stages in total) and it's surprisingly fun. it's just siege missions (either defence or attack) which can be repetitive but at the same time the sieges are one of the best parts of the game so i'm spacing this part out and taking my time with it.
All in all I can see why people are disappointed but this isn't andromeda, it's still a really good game which is a lot of fun. It's just also quite flawed in areas. I'd say pick it up on sale and give it a go. You'll probably enjoy it but don't buy loot boxes because they really aren't necessary. You can just recruit orcs during the siege missions of shadow wars, there's no need to buy them.

The orcs in the game had far more of a personality than any humans that you would run into. The Balrog fight is disappointing as well because all I was doing was dodging his attacks and shooting him in his gigantic weak spot. It felt as though someone was holding my hand throughout the fight. Some of the fights with the orcs in the game were way harder than that. The sieges in the game were amazing to watch though. The main parts of the siege are not focused on surviving but making sure that the captains you brought with you don't die. The fights with the overlords were quite difficult and it would occasionally take me several tries to defeat them. Unlike Shadow of Mordor, the ending to this game is really cool. I did not go through with the countless siege defenses to finish the game and I may edit my review after that but the boss fights are not quick time events, the story takes a major twist, and the story somewhat fits in with the movies. Taking all this into consideration, the nemesis system is probably the best thing in the game. The story is bland up to the end but that doesn't make it a bad game. It does a good job of wrapping up the story of Talion and Celebrimbor. One thing that I want to know from the other reviews for the game is "why do you harbor such a deep hatred for the game?" I ask this because all I am seeing are people bashing the microtransactions. I do admit that I do not like them either but it does not break the game. I understand some of the reviews with like 4s and 5s saying that the story is boring or something else was wrong. But the low scores on the microtransaction alone is kind of arrogant. Why rate the game so low if all you have to say about it is one thing? Try something a bit more constructive. Expand

Top nice! Really like it, I understand why people are frustrated with the in game purchases but i don't mind spending a few euros on the microtransactions for a better time :)

If you were a fan of Shadow of Mordor, you'll like this game. The loot box thing is bad, but It was easy enough to ignore for me at least. It has more or less the same game play but it adds new ways to use your war chiefs. I kind of wish there was a few more ways to customize them and make them more tailored to how you play, but at least you can use them more in this one.

The number one improvement is probably how much better the characters are (excluding Tallion, he seems to be less likeable this time) and how cool each orc is. You can ease drop on orc conversations and they are making actual small talk. Its a minor thing, but I would find myself stopping to listen to them before I'd stealth kill one of them.

I have not experienced any game breaking glitches yet, but there were minor things here and there. The worst I've had was the pre-fight speech didn't trigger once but after waiting 30 seconds or so the fight began anyway. The biggest draw back is about 75% of the way through the game I kind of stopped caring about most of the missions left since I had completely conquered each area. Other than that its a strong follow up to the previous.

How dare they put microtransactions into a SP game. Especially into a good game. This game could've been game of the year but no Warner brothers has to kill it with microtransactions.

I don't get the negative reviews. Just to be clear: you DON'T need any lootboxes at all to play or win this game. You can simply ignore it. You don't even need to grind to get money/gear/captains, just make the **** quests or play the story. The game has so much to offer, starting with assassinating orcs, to recruit them later for sieges. There are great skills, weapons and armor toI don't get the negative reviews. It really feels like a great Lord of the rings game. Even the story is good at some point. The last chapter is a bit odd: just conquer/hold fortresses over and over again. Expand

I was annoyed by various flaws (both technical and design-related) and tedious, dragged out final stages of the campaign, but overall I enjoyed the ride. It looks like the developers wanted to stuff the game with all the best elements Middle-earth has to offer. Shadow of War’s atmosphere is terrific and watching Talion rise in power is surprisingly addictive. [12/2017, p.62]

A handful of issues, some much more annoying than others, do not negate how solid of an action RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of War is. A tremendous achievement for the team at Monolith Productions, this is an exciting, if not sometimes slow, and too often unfair, title that manages to be as impressively fun as it is big.

Big, brutal, and - alas - bloated, Shadow of War is a disappointing follow-up, conjuring battles of grand scale and then deadening their impact through grinding repetition. [December 2017, p.79]
