I know a 5 seems like a low score for a lot of people, but I don't think God of War is bad, I just think it's unremarkable. The gameplay does just enough to be interesting, but for me the biggest flaw is that it was just too easy. Even the Valkyries weren't that difficult and I believe that the Valkyrie Queen's level of difficulty would be perfect as a regular boss, but nowhere near difficult enough to be an optional boss (I know a lot of people had trouble with her and thought the Valkyries were extremely tough. I'm not trying to brag here, but i genuinely did not find them that difficult). This lack of difficulty is a problem, as I didn't really have to engage with the mechanics at all. Once I got the timing down for the dodge and parry, I was able to get through each encounter without putting in much thought into them.

The world/playable map the game takes place in, while pretty looking was kind of dull. Everywhere you go, there was nothing that interesting in how you could interact with the world which made me not want to explore, but I had to anyway because you need loot to upgrade kratos. While on paper using loot for progression is a good idea as it is easier to control such that you don't get overpowered, I found the upgrades to be far too incremental to be exciting. It's hard to get psyched over doing slightly more damage and having slightly more armour. Worst of all, it kind of cheapens the combat. It makes some fights near impossible to get through until you get better armour in which case you can take it on the intended way. I don't like the feeling of losing a fight largely because I don't have good gear and die in a single hit. I rather do away with the upgrade system all together and just rely on your skill to get through fights. This is before mentioning the absolute mistake that was Niflheim. In short, it was an optional region where you can get good loot. Great, except to get everything you need to do the same thing over and over again. They should have tuned it such that you only need to go through the circuit maybe 5-7 times. As it is in game, it took you way too many times doing the same thing over and over again to get everything.

Lastly the narrative, is okay. It is clearly trying to recreate a father child bonding type story that we got in the last of us. The issue with God of War is that we don't really see the character's grow in a substantial way. You would expect Kratos to go from an emotionally distant father, to someone who is more open. We kind of get that with him telling his son that he is a god, but he still dodges questions like where he got is blades of chaos. He doesn't feel that more open to Atreus then at the start. As it stands his character arc feels incomplete. Speaking of the boy, his arc is that he went from an unsure kid to a kid with a literal god complex back to a regular kid I guess? It kind of went by way to quickly and his turn to the dark side and then back into a tolerable character happened so fast it barely counts as growth. As for the main villain, he was extremely underwhelming. For some reason the writers decided to include a villain but not make him part of the main conflict. He's just something that happens in the story sometimes. When Kratos learns that there may be a way to defeat him, he shrugs it off and says that they will find a way, but does nothing to look for this weakness. In fact the villain has nothing to do with the quest of spreading Kratos's wife's ashes at all. If he were to disappear from the plot, nothing would have changed. Kratos would just get to his goal with less hassle. Kratos was literally just on his way to the end goal when the villain appears out of nowhere and starts a fight. So We're fighting the villian one last time I guess? no build up, nothing to tie him in with the rest of the plot. He's just there to be a boss fight.

I know I sound harsh on the game, but the narrative was the weakest part of it by far, the gameplay makes up for it somewhat, but it suffers from being too easy to really engage me.

I am, and actually was, a fan of the series. I went through all parts of the game starting from ps2, through ps3 and psp, ending with the remaster on ps4. This part is a break with the previous formula, it is very boring, slow, annoying playability, stretched out fights , annoying kid. Not recommended.

Beautiful game, much different than GOW 3 which was very inferior. GOW 2018 is a top game with similar interaction and gameplay like Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Last of us and other games. I didn't like GOW 3, but I liked GOW 2018. BUY IT !

Now that I got a PS5 and heard about the upgrade that allows you to play at 4k 60FPS went back, gave it a try and had the most amazing gaming experience ever. Joel & Ellie gained a placed at my heart that I assumed no other game could replace, but atreos & kratos grow so deep into me that its hard for me to tell anymore. They world is so beautifully designed. I found myself looking in every corner of this world just to see more. It is an open world, but has a extremely easy to follow scheme to complete the main story or side quests at your own pace.

Upgrading weapons is so extremely satisfying to me. It is a very rewarding experience. When upgrading weapons, there is a noticeable difference when fighting the same enemies.

Many more elements to this game made me absolutely in love with it. I cannot wait for the sequel. I recommend this game to just about anyone that can handle a little blood and gore from defeating enemies.

If you're a real fan of the original games, then this is the biggest insult you could get. From the art direction, to the gameplay, to even the way the developer talks about their old fans and their old games.

Mindless, braindead, boring, dull to replay and trying to tell a story it fails with characters that are uninspired and uninteresting. Camera issues, boring gameplay that is just mashing buttons, third person camera that doesn't fit at all with this kind of gameplay and actually hinders your skill. I could go on. But basically, next time, just do a standalone game, and don't stand on the shoulders of a famous name to get easy sales.

Mimir is the best side character ever. Before I played the game, I was not really well informed on Nordic mythology but the game made me want to know more about it. At the beginning the story felt hard for me to follow, but at the end I was shocked how things turned out. Nice graphics, well written characters, great plot.

Never got around to rating this game but it goes without saying it's outstanding. Just replayed it again and it still manages to be exceptional even in 2021. I can't wait for ragnarok, and if you haven't played this game, you are truly missing out. The combat, scenery, story and atmosphere are top notch. I wasn't much of a fan of the earlier entries, but this one knocked it out of the park.

While things like jumping are missed I still had a lot of fun but what I enjoyed more then anything was the story. Having Kratos move to a new mythological land of gods is a fantastic idea. And while sometimes annoying I did really like the inclusion of Atreus his son. Him not knowing of his godley origin and him trying to emotionally connect with Kratos is something I didn't know I wanted to see in these games. And seeing Kraos open up and allow himself to connect to his boy is wonderful especially when you remember that all these games have been actual Greek tragedies for Kratos with him killing his wife daughter mother father inadvertently his brother and being betrayed by practically everyone I think the man deserves to find some happiness in these games. Cory Barlog and his team achieved what many thought impossible – despite having changed almost everything Santa Monica managed to preserve that elusive spark that makes God of War game feel like a God of War game. They created one of the defining titles of the current generation and a technical marvel whose stunning beauty in motion words cannot describe. And there’s one more thing. Barlog’s touching reaction to his masterpiece’s scores shows that even in the world of huge budgets, micropayments, loot boxes and sales forecasts there still is a place for artists who pour their hearts into their work. We need someone to remind us of that once in a while. [06/2018, p.38]

Where most games excel in one single area, God of War manages to deliver on every front, providing players with one of the best experiences we’ve seen so far this generation.
