Let me get straight to the point, the game is absolutely amazing as. The world of ghost of Tsushima is stunning and thank you for the Japanese option as it makes the game better with it.

Although I say its amazing, but there's some frustrating issue or notes for this game:

    1. Combat: WEAK but FUN. Well, I understand why people (especially the one that have played Sekiro) disappointed with GoT as the combat system is very simple. Example: Every boss has the same fighting mechanic, except Khotun Khan (the final boss). After you parry them, you can attack them twice, if you go for the 3rd strike, they will dodge and counter or deliver a deadly attack. For the Mongols (minions), they only have around 9-10 role with different fighting mechanics. So, the combat will become very repetitive and compare to Sekiro, the combat is lacking of variation and challenges. Another addition to that, you have many ninja tools at your disposal which makes the character way too OP in my opinion.

    2. Story: Not appealing. Finish it today and not having a memorable moments with it. On the opposite, the side-story is quite good. I'm more invested in the Tales of Ishikawa and Masako. Will need more work on the narrative side (Learn from your brother, Naughty Dog).

    3. Platforming: Completely BAD. You need to play camera for moving to another rock when climbing and the camera can affect how far you jump from one another (for left or right cases only). The "Crawl Under" seems buggy as sometimes I'm getting trapped inside. The funny thing is, If I move backward when crawling under, I can get out easily which doesn't make any sense. Something also doesn't feel right with the ladder as sometimes I can't get it work so I need to run near the ladder to be able to descend or jump to ascend.

    4. Side Quests: Boring. I did it only for trophy and for reaching the title of "Ghost of Tsushima". Almost all of them need to be tackle in the same way. Tracking, Running, Killing and Done. Don't get me wrong but helping hostage in the middle of the road still way better than doing all those side quests.

    5. Legends: Has it been dead already? I cannot get another player while matchmaking. It seems gonna be a lot of fun thou but I never able to play with another player as the system keep finding players for me.

    6. Difficulty: WEAK. Play it on hard mode and didn't feel any challenge at all. Change it to lethal and still there's no major difference. The only differences are the enemy's attack are more punishing (2 hit only) and enemy less likely to idly waiting for you to kill his friend, so they tend to charge towards you together. But, back to the combat system, it still no challenge at all as I was expecting a new fighting mechanic instead of giving a buff to the enemy.

Well, seems many but all the lacking points still doesn't match many positive traits in the game.

Conclusion: This game is absolutely amazing and I think this game will be well accepted to players who like stealth game, open-world, exploration and of course Japan in general.

I didn't recommend this game if you like story-driven or narrative game and Sekiro player that have high expectation of GoT combat system.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got this game on release and played it faithfully for many hours, but then I got kind of bored with it and didn't play again for a couple months. I ended up just getting more wrapped up in other games, which is never a good sign. I wanted to beat the story so I forced myself to sit down and beat the game in its entirety so I finally went ahead and did that.

Overall, the game has a great atmosphere, satisfying and simple combat system (that has some depth) a beautifully unique art design, and a faithful Japanese spirit throughout. I quite enjoy the fact that you can unlock most everything in the game without microtransactions or DLCs and the storyline itself is quite good although it's nothing absolutely compelling. The ending definitely pulled on my heat strings and that first scene of Jin as the Ghost (when you poison the Mongols) got me fired up. Once you master the combat system, you'll really FEEL like a samurai and that sort of power fantasy in games like this are important. There's a lot to like here, but the game isn't perfect. I think there's WAY too many people on here blindly screaming "10/10 perfect!" because it's not a perfect game by any means, unless maybe you haven't played an open world action RPG in the last 5 years. If you have, a lot of things here are going to look familiar.

The cons aren't plentiful, but they're impactful. This game's stealth mechanics feels almost exactly identical to Shadow of Mordor/Assassin's Creed Origins/Odyssey. These games are generally criticized for feeling repetitive and having boring side quests and I unfortunately got that feeling from time to time with Tsushima. After I mastered the combat system, and reached a point where I almost never got injured during combat sequences, it was no longer exciting to take down Mongol camps anymore. The first 5 or 10 times? Yeah, it was cool. But you end up doing these things so much that it starts to have that Far Cry 5 affect of endlessly clearing outpost after outpost. Which to be fair, a lot of modern games rely on "outpost liberation" style gameplay, it's nothing bad inherently, but that's my point. If you've played AC Origins, or Shadow of War, or any of these other titles, you're not going to be excited to be doing it here again and again. In fact, once you beat the game and side quests, what does it tell you to do? Clear MORE outposts. After stealth killing a Mongol for the 1000th time, or Heavy Arrowing a guard off a tower for the 1000th time, or getting into a battle with a random group of 5 Mongols and parrying their strikes and murdering them with cold efficiency for the 1000th time, I just felt bored. Does that mean I never had fun? No. But what it means is this game lacks depth. Behind the layer of beautiful mosaic scenery, and epic tales of The Ghost fighting back the Mongol invaders, what we have here is a pretty basic stealth system, and an above average combat system with a largely empty Open World. That's the game.

Yes the map is big, and it's pretty, and there's lots of side quests and collectibles, but that's actually it. Outside of main quests, you have 5 duels, a bunch of fetch quests, a bunch of "Go to this abandoned fishing village and kill these 6 bandits that stand zero chance against you", and about 1000 different collectibles thrown all over the places. While the hot springs, and bamboo strikes are pretty cool, there's nothing else to immerse you in the world. You can't share sake with a friend, or go to a tavern, or play any minigames like Go or Shogi, you can't really INTERACT with anybody outside of the main quests. There's no blade maintenance, no caring for your horse, building relationships, making decisions, etc. Beneath the layers of story telling and visuals, this game is essentially played on rails but it tricks you into thinking it's not. What agency and choice do you really have here? Whether you'll knock out a few side quests before continuing the main quest, or not. That's it. This game, very easily, could have been more linear like The Last of Us 2 and it probably would have been better for it. I guess that's more of a problem with the gaming industry than this game specifically. Studios seem to think everything has to be some massive open world setting, but a lot of times that setting can drag a game down rather than lift it up. I think it dragged Ghost of Tsushima down. Constantly riding through endless empty fields really messes with the pacing and by the final stretch of this game, it felt like I was trudging through the mud just trying to finish the story.

Well unfortunately, the Open World is just a very beautiful wallpaper, there's no risk or depth here, it's the same old formula that gets tedious after a while.

To be frank, there's a big variety of tools when it comes to combat, and the feeling of the Katana is excellent, smooth animations and many abilities to unlock, it's a very enjoyable experience despite the repetitive and shallow quest design, which is by far the biggest problem of the game.

As for the story, it's pretty simple, predictable and very forgettable, the pacing is all over the place and most characters are uninteresting, but there are some pretty great emotional scenes that are very well done.

In the end I was left a little bit disappointed, because honestly, I couldn't get attached to this game, but I really had fun playing it, that being said, it's a solid experience overall.

    Final Rating: "Good" ~ 7/10.

The game has amazing graphics, cool atmosphere, somewhat original game mechanics like different stands and all, but I have never been so bored because of the dullness of the story in a game for so long. I was able to feel more connected to the game's atmosphere even in the recent copy-paste cliche Far Cry games. Characters, stories, missions, conversations are all superficial.

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world game that incorporates Samurai and ninja-based combat. You can either face enemies head on as an honorable Samurai, or assasinate them from the shadows as "The Ghost." Join Jin Sakai as he brandishes his katana against the Mongol invaders. Not to mention, their cunning, yet ruthless leader, Khotun Khan. Although the game excels in it's beautiful single-player campaign and excellent gameplay, there are definitely some areas left to be desired. Specifically, it's side missions and collectibles, it's side characters, and it's enemy AI, made me feel as if I was being dragged through hours of gameplay. The story itself has it's moments, but the idea of an open world filled with uninteresting side missions and collectibles made the game feel more like a chore than an addictive experience.

Aside from the main characters like Yuna, Khotun Khan, and Jin Sakai himself, the rest of the gang - which you'll meet as you play the game - can have missions and dialogue that's hovers between dull or worth listening. And with the number of individual side missions, the enjoyment you spend completing them will depend on your interest in the characters themselves, and the dialogue they offer.

Combat and gameplay is really good. Instead of swinging your katana in successive X buttons, the game offers a variety of ways to slaughter and kill your Mongol enemies. As you progress through the game, you'll gain "legend points" which will go towards unlocking Jin's Samurai and Ghost skills. You'll get to use a variety of Samurai "stances" which are effective against specific enemy types. There's an extensive list of ninja tools to poison, pierce, blow up, and distract enemy npcs. And with the inclusion of "two" types of bows (Yes two), you can shoot enemies up close and quick, or penetrate their helmet's from a distance. The only problem is, enemy AI during ghost mode is simplistic and predictable. Unlike the ingenious NPC AI from The Last of Us 2, Mongol enemies in Ghost of Tsushima are simply routine in nature; routine patrols, routing searches, and routine alarms when you get caught. Even worse, Jin only does like 3-4 types of animations when killing in stealth mode. Apart from health, Jin can execute specialized Samurai techniques by spending "resolve points" which are replenished during combat or through successful assassinations.

Aside from the lengthy side missions, the collectibles, Mongol camp liberations, and many others, is where the game starts to feel like Assassins Creed objectives; tedious, tiring, and time-wasting. Ghost of Tsushima contains a very hefty amount of content - weeks worth of gameplay. And as a player, you don't wanna spend that time collecting useless stuff and listen to uninteresting dialogue. Besides the main mission, you'll be dragging yourself across Tsushima completing objectives you don't really enjoy, or collecting artifacts you don't really need.

Your armor, bow, and sword can be upgraded and customized by collecting resources you find across Tsushima. By collecting the necessary materials, you can improve a weapon's stats or change your Samurai armor's color. Bombs, ninja tools, and others can also be improved by via your "legend points" or upgrade their capacity through animal hides.

I wouldn't necessarily call Ghost of Tsushima a masterpiece just yet. And I don't believe the 9/10 or 10/10 hype that players give it credit for - fits the hours of gameplay I've expended on it. It's yet to sit alongside God of War or Red Dead Redemption 2 on the tier list. If I could score this as a 7.5, I believe it strongly deserves it. But it's yet to prove itself as an 8. It's a flawed game with excellent gameplay and a heartfelt story. If you want to experience what it's like to play as an authentic Samurai or a stealthy ninja, this game is dedicated for you. If you're interested in an open-world game that explores Japanese culture in all it's authenticity and glory, this game is dedicated for you. If you want to know what it's like to choose between honor and home, then you'll fight alongside Jin Sakai as a warrior of Tsushima. And no amount of bland side missions, chore-like collectibles, and faulty enemy AIs will stop you from experiencing that.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all I got to say this is probably my favorite open world game that has ever been developed by sucker Punch productions. Although the flaws in this game makes me feel that this doesn't deserve to be called a masterpiece. I'd like the story of the game. I like the open world design and the beautiful visuals of the game. I think the combat is fun and feels snappy and responsive when slicing guys up with your katana. Graphics I feel like could have been better. I feel like the environments look better than the actual in-game character models. The main character is pretty bland and not charismatic at all but there's a story reason purpose for that. I think the two biggest flaws in terms of gameplay is the stealth and the combat doesn't evolve in any major ways and enemies don't get any tougher. Fact that's the biggest problem overall with the gameplay. The fact that overall the game is incredibly easy even if you're playing on hard difficulty. During stealth sections it's even becomes more prevalent. The guards have absolutely no peripheral vision and and they don't hear your footsteps if you're not walking slowly while crouching. When you get caught and if you quickly kill the guard who sounds the alarm everybody will just go back to normal like nothing happened they don't stay panicked and are not searching for you the whole time once they know someone is there. I feel like I need to explain this to everyone because the main story is about a samurai who has to give up his samurai code and start killing enemies behind their backs which is against the samurai's way and slowly become the Japan's first ever ninja or aka the ghost. The main character Jin Saki has to learn to give up his samurai lifestyle to do whatever it takes to defeat an enemy who does not respect the samurai ways and traditions. The Game narrative basically ask this question: do we obey our leaders without questioning them or without doubts if their way can defeat the enemy who does not care about playing fair and only cares about playing dirty and doing whatever they can to win. I still think this is a good game but I think it's mixed at best when you combine the two main gameplay issues it's hard for me to argue that if this is a masterpiece or not. Expand

Character Interactions - Sometimes the writing is corny, and illogical, and it happens all the time e.g. some peasant I saved said "a samurai, that means lord shimura is rescued" I've been saving everyone since then, how is what you said logical. After about 20 - 25 hours of gameplay, I started to get really frustrated with this experience. It just felt like any other Ubisoft/contemporary open-world adventure game.

Even this feature of having no 'hub, side quest marker' instead you have to follow a trail left by the wind...that is a quest marker....like? Yes, it makes you feel more immersed in the setting, but damn? like! it is just a sidequest marker. I think what it does do is make you more engaged with the scenery around you (the graphics in this game are gorgeous, the setting of Tsushima is gorgeous.

I personally just wish they took more opportunity here to give us more to learn/explore and randomly encounter within this gorgeous real location. Like even playing more into Japanese Folklore/history would have kinda been great.

I will say you are absolutely getting your money's worth with this title. I do believe that with games coming out these days the real bar for expectation is certainly very low. So it's not slightly surprising that a game like this would come out and really impress everybody?

I will say, for what it is, this is a very well-crafted videogame that a lot of love did go into. I won't say it's bad either. But I was definitely wanting more?

It's so small in some instances I think my TV's normal input lag is enough to make it impossible to react to, it must be predicted. I also really hate that dodge is circle+left stick instead of just circle. Ghost of Tsushima is nigh impeccable from a technical aspect. On the actual game front, however, it falls rather flat and does nothing to distinguish itself from the glut of other open world titles on the PS4.

Credit where credit is due: the game is gorgeous. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing at nearly all times, it's an excellent showcase of the graphics that the aging PS4 can put out. On the base model, it runs natively at 1080p and maintains a mostly solid 30 fps with occasional but not horrendous dips below that when there are a lot of particles or physics interactions going on. The lighting, shadows and textures all look fantastic, blood effects are excellent and well stylized, the draw distance is extremely impressive (while there is definitely some pop-in of fine details, it's very well hidden and only noticeable if you know exactly what to look for). The wind effects in particular are extremely impressive, causing foliage and grass to sway convincingly to the point where there is even simulated turbulence that causes ripples and waves.

The actual gameplay loop is where it falls rather flat though. I've sunk about ten hours into it so far, and I really feel like I experienced all the gameplay had to offer in the first two. The combat is serviceable, but nothing paradigm shifting: it's really just a less button-mashy version of the Batman system. The standoff system is really cool in theory, but its implementation is video-gamey and inorganic, plagued by intrusive UI that is extremely out of place in a game that otherwise minimizes UI elements. Exploration is dull, yielding either cosmetic options or incremental character improvements, and captures the same tedium of searching for Korok seeds in Breath of the Wild. The stealth mechanics are boring; enemies are generally a combination of myopic and hearing-impaired, and often don't notice a violent swordfight that occurred in a tent within throwing distance. Most irritating is that the game goes out of the way to place numerous ways to create distractions or general chaos, but it is never really necessary to use those options and it's usually more efficient to just go in swinging. The controls are pretty tight and polished though, so I'll give it that at least.

Overall, Ghost of Tsushima would be pretty mind-blowing if you haven't played a single open world game in the last decade. But if you have, it's absolutely nothing different from any of the rest.

The stealth is so silly mostly because of the bad AI and the animation system on the enemies.

    Pros:

    The combat is fun
Exploration is great. I enjoy traveling around and finding foxes and writing haikus

    Cons:
The story is very basic and quite predictable. I'm a good guy and the mongols are the bad guys.
There were also several moments which felt nonsensical to me.
Jin is a weak protagonist. I love that he's voiced by zoro but he's just such a dull character.
The missions are extremely samey. I go somewhere and I kill a bunch of dudes... the lack of variety is a real chore.
The game is unpolished in several areas. My hair clips through my armor set, my feet clip through rocks when I'm jumping sometimes as well. I also jumped inside of two rocks and one of them propelled me into the sky.
The enemy AI is pretty bad. They stop searching for you almost immediately and often don't notice dead bodies nearby.
The stealth really isn't great either. It just feels like a waste of time to sneak around when i can challenge everyone and cut them down in a quarter of the time.
Allies are pretty useless in battle and I hate they can get knocked down and if you don't revive them in time it's a mission fail.
They have trailing missions which always suck and there are some forced stealth missions like 'silent death' which just feel like a hassle.
It's lacking in originality. It's very much an assassin's creed horizon zero dawn game which is fine but I always appreciate it when a game takes some risks.

Overall it's a decent game but i'm a bit baffled as to why it's gotten such a positive reception. I assume as people play more of the game its flaws will become more and more apparent.

I don’t even know where to start. Movement is not snappy at all - just clunky, climbing and traversing is even worse. Jin will CONSTANTLY be tripping on tiny ledges that are barely raised a few inches above the ground in certain areas (seriously?). Menus look like traditional japanese mixed with sleek modernization that is way overdone.. it just looks corny and reminds me of AC which is so bland. No player agency in the beginning.. they hold your hand through everything. The huge world map is kinda barren.. there are SO FEW ITEMS to find in the world. Enemy variation is really weak. BOTW world is so much deeper — the comparisons are a joke. Combat camera is frustrating (unless you like being hit by things off screen). No lock on... really? Practically no control of the camera or controller settings/mappings. It’s just on rails.. you can do things at your pace and in whatever order you want but once you start a mission it’s just so linear. And the story is intriguing but executed in a very uninteresting way because the characters are just so uninteresting and generic. Nothing new, unique or original here aside for maaaybe the lack of on-screen map and ux stuff which I hate to break it to you... but minor things like that can’t save this game. But I guess in 2020 if you can make a game look rly beautiful then it’ll get rave reviews even if the gameplay is objectively mediocre? Sad. You’re given a horse immediately.. meaning exploration does not feel encouraged which is reinforced by how unrewarding it is because there’s very little variation in what you can find from exploring. Immersion is constantly broken by interruptions of something being on-rails. Lose a fight in the middle of a path? Don’t worry the enemies will literally be gone when you respawn. Infiltrating an enemy camp through the front door? Don’t worry - ever single enemy will conveniently have their backs turned to you at all times. I’m tired of writing but honestly this game is just a mess that I tried so hard to love and the beautiful environment is doing a wonderful job of making loads of people overlook its flaws that make it a game that I am not at all motivated to play... which is sad because I love just about any samurai/ninja/any japanese swordfighting game. ninja gaiden, sekiro, nioh, hell BOTW... they’re all original, have character and are just a better experience. if you want your hand held through a stunningly beautiful 40hr cinematic experience that’s a mechanical “meh” with unexciting characters.. this is the game for you lol. I felt for other characters too but they weren't present during main cut scenes that often for me to care enough about them. Cut scenes lack production value. You can clearly see the distinction between an important cut scene done with mocap and other cut scenes running purely on game's engine. Those other cut scenes look horrible and I'm wondering if fade in/out effect used so often in the game was implemented just so the game could load faster during an open world. Either way that was really annoying. Finally, birds and foxes shouldn't have appeared so often. It takes away the feeling of being rewarded when done so frequently. Expand

I don't understand the hype for it. I'm going to be honest, I was REALLY into the game for the first act. It was fun exploring, and cutting down enemies. It was like this game was the samurai game I always wanted. But that all changed once I got to the second act. The second act is such a slog that all the flaws become apparent.

Combat is extremely boring once you start unlocking a lot of the tech tree. There should have been some kind of limit of points to promote more of a character build style of gameplay. But you know gamers, they don't like to be cut off from content. That want to be and do everything. I found myself switching the difficulty so much. I found myself setting it to easy because I just didn't want to deal with the hassle of the harder modes. Even on the harder modes this game is really easy with the help of items and the bow.

The map in act one is a pretty decent size, but everything feels so much bigger on act 2's map. It's such a hassle to travel around. And I'm tired of exploring and looking around a map which all it presents to me is a lifeless world. It looks pretty but extremely lifeless. It doesn't promote much exploration because the most you'll find might be some items for crafting. But they can be found almost anywhere so it feels like a letdown for traveling off the beaten path.

The side quests are the same exact thing. It'll get on your nerves. Meet character. Have some exposition dialogue as you travel to the place. Examine and look for footprints. Follow footprints to an enemy camp. Defeat about 12 guys. Finish. They all follow this kind of format. It's not interesting. It's not fun. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if the characters actually had some personality, but nothing about the characters really make me care about them or their problems.

The game does have some mini side quests like finding hot springs and doing haiku, but they feel like little reward for how tedious it gets to explore the game and how easy combat is.

Overall this game is alright. I don't see how any gamer can give it more than a 7 though. It ticks all the right boxes, but doesn't add anything new that hasn't been done already.

Alright, first impression was "wow, nice". The game has great graphics, the combat is at first glance awesome and has a very nice flow in it and it's actually very enjoyable because of that. The big plus-point of this game was the great open-world, detailed made and it's supposed to be immersive without any serious HUD.

But that's it. The game is REALLY REALLY BORING AF. Once you get through the hack-slash-parry flow combat, that's where the fun stops. The story is cliche, characters are totally uninteresting and the dialogues are terrible. I seriously don't care at all what happens next, it's all about go kill some guys, get a stupid boring dialogue, go kill more guys. That sums it up for the "open-world" as well. Besides some uninteresting collectibles, there's nothing else to do besides "go from A to B, kill people, boring cut scene".

Unless you are a hardcore samurai fanboy/girl, the game isn't that good. Don't pay the full price.

Ghost of Tsushima.... where should I start. This game isn’t GOTY worthy, definitely not. It’s not terrible, but it’s not as great as many thought. Camera angles suck, NPC’s suck, another open world go to this objective gets repetitive and boring. Nothing new was really added. Characters aren’t really, interesting. Fighting is fun, but when trying to go with stealth it’s annoying.

They expect you to be fighting off the first, while parrying the second, and dodging the third. This is just straight up painful and makes you feel like a weakling instead of a samurai, the opposite of what it should be. The graphics, voice acting and tone are great and are the only thing deserving genuine praise, they combine to create a rich Japanese style and feeling. Next up the duels, ohhh boy the duels. These duels were the most sleazy way to "Dark Soulsify" the game, these damn duels pit you off against a monstrous foe without your bows, arrows, and kunai. Basically all you have is your sword and stances. These duels consists of dodging/parrying an onslaught of enemy attacks, judging with your expected to have sixth sense of which way to roll out of the attacks, all while counterattacking and chipping away at the enemy's massive armor and health bars. These duels are grueling, unforgiving with no checkpoints and last what feels like forever. This part of the game is the most monotonous, and was a good way to get masochistic journalists to praise this game as another "Soulsborne genre redefining game". All of this leads up to what feels like a troll of a final boss, not to get into spoilers, they strip all your armor and charms, leaving your defense levels plummeting and your armor charms gone. This coupled with the bosses insta-kill attacks was a fitting way to end this gruesome game. All in all, this game is no where near as good as PlayStation grifters and paid masochistic game journalists claim it to be, this game is good in some areas piss poor in others. This game is a 6/10.

The world of GoT is wrought with things to do and solid instances of combat. Where the game is dragged down for me is the story, where it is just as by the book as it is uninteresting. I had more fun going after the Platinum trophy than completing the actual story. I sold back this game because I knew I would never play it again.

The story is average at best. Each cutscene bore me a bit, especially since they cannot be skipped. The whole story is very clichéd and about a knight in white armor who saves the world. Some people may like it, I don't buy it. I didn't care about a single character, not a single tragic death made an impression on me. Everything in the story seems very artificial: the characters' emotions, their motivations or their dialogues.

The combat system is very satisfying. I regret that the stealth system does not give as much satisfaction, I do not know what it results from, but stealth in this game works moderately.

To sum up: a very correct sandbox, if you are not a big fan of Japanese culture or assassins creed like me, I recommend waiting until the game is discounted.

It does make improvements on the navigation systems of open-world games, making waypoints be less intrusive and more involved in the environments, but that novelty wore off quite early for me. It also has a pretty flat main story led by unconvincing performances, animations, cinematics, and cliche dialogue that takes itself too seriously. Sadly, even a key part of the story, which is the Ghost stealth, was also weak and outdated. Despite these major flaws though, the game was mostly enjoyable due to it’s great samurai duels, epic battles, and pretty world. [Link omitted per site rules.] Expand

Sometimes I found myself looking at how the sun penetrates the misty air. The combat is quite fun with this intense Japanese battle music pushing you further. Some action sequences were so intense and vibrant I couldn't stop saying "wow". And the premise is pretty interesting, watching an honorable samurais' descent into dishonor. But all of this is drowned out by its severe repetitiveness. The story is predictable and unoriginal, the combat is so repetitive it gets so boring, the open world aspect of it is unnecessary and simple, the side quests are just the same thing repeated over and over, and the dialogue looks like two robots are talking to each other. There are more mistakes than this but I think these are the most important. Let me explain.
    1. The story
The story has a good premise but it does it in the most unoriginal way. They don't get you invested in most of the characters, for example Norio. I hated Norio, he just complained and complained, and the voice is the most annoying thing, and when I finished his emotional side quests I breathed a sigh of relief because I didn't want to be with him anymore.
    2. The Combat
This is one of the best parts of the game, there are some times when I was laughing it was so much fun, the music is pushing you forward to do these awesome combos. But it repeats. Again. And again. And again. The stealth gets so boring and the unstealth combat is just the same. They introduce new weapons and skills, but you use them a couple of times then it gets stale again. After 30 hours you wish it had more to add, but you only get one new weapon every time you max out your honor, then after 5 times of maxing out, you get nothing.
    3. Open World
This is the worst part of this game. It has no reason to be open world. There are only 9 types of discoverable locations in the giant island. There is no reason to exploring when there are only 9 things. Every time I think im going to find something cool its always a fox den, or a haiku. Another thing, usually in other open world games everything is interactive, you can do what you want to the npc's, you can find so many types of locations, so many different missions, different weapons that do different things. In this game is you explode a bomb in a crowd of people they will fall around and scream for a little and then go back to what they were doing like nothing happened. You only get 4 main weapons. 4. compare to wild hunt, gta v, red dead 2, where you have hundreds of weapons to choose from. The random encounters are boring and make exploring a pain. There are only a couple types of resources to collect while exploring while in other games like rdr2, you can collect anything and in the witches 3 with hundreds of ingredients. Everything is simplified to the simplest form which disappoints me.
    4. Side quests
the side quests are boring and uninspired, they are so similar and provide you with little reward for going out of your way to do them.
    5. Dialogue
This reminds me of horizon zero dawn where the dialogue was so stiff and robotic it made me want to kill myself. The main character, Jin, talks in one tone and doesn't really laugh or do anything a likable character does. In games like this its good to have a character that you can at least relate to in even the tiniest way, but Jin is a legend who has everything given to him and never smiles. I am being a bit aggressive and overreacting, but it is still a problem.

Those are the main problems but there are more. This isn't a bad game, it just isn't anything special. I still enjoyed my time playing and had so much fun in some parts, but there were many times where I had no fun at all.

The most fun I had playing the game was when I was surrounded by enemies, switching furiously between stances and beating down a bunch of mongols. The scenery and camera mode are also notable: I imagine GoT’s camera mode will be the gold standard for the next decade. Gone are the days where you take a single still. The camera lets you track shots, move from point to point, change the focal length and depth of field. The scenery is beautiful, too, so capturing exceptionally good shots is a breeze. The rest of the game is pretty average. The story tries to embody the samurai films that inspire it, but is mostly filled with classic video game cliches and forgettable characters—it even feels really forced and overly simplistic. The quest and level design are both competent, but not something to really write home about—the camps are all reasonably the same, the quests all have the same trajectory (and normally two or three fights) with different characters and stories that are almost entirely forgettable or interchangeable. Even the main quest lines conclude with a siege. Twice. In a row. It felt like they ran out of ideas. The biggest disappointment is the stealth component. In a game whose story purportedly attempts to pit the honor code of the samurai against “dishonorable” stealth tactics, you’d think they’d actually put some time in the stealth mode. The AI is just awful—to test it, I one time walked back and forth across the view cone of a guard from one patch of tall grass to another. 20 times. Never once did they look through the grass. The terrible AI really makes the middling level design feel a lot worse than it really is. It’s just plain boring. I found myself just wanting to stick to the samurai honor code because the combat is so much better than stealth.

In the end, the game has some good parts. But I think it’s pretty average overall. GoT won’t be replacing Assassin’s Creed as the premiere stealth game, or getting nominated for any GOTY awards, any time soon.

The combat feels fluid but is stiff sometimes and doesn’t let you change target even though you want to attack a other one. Normally I don’t play games harder than it needs to be but I was so hyped for this game and it’s setting, I decided to take it slow and do a run on the difficulty „hard“ (no other harder difficultie available). At first I had problems with my enemies. They were fast and ruthless but after one or two hours they’re not as fast anymore - or atleast it doesn’t feel so anymore. Reaching that point was my biggest disappointment in this game. Once you know the mechanics it becomes really easy even on hard. Sure, here and there you still die but that’s mostly because the fights are so easy I made it myself harder and made my own challenges like not using armor, omamoris or even not using new skillpoints. I don’t upgrade my sword too because i want the fights to last longer. You remember the first few assassins creeds where you could just fight with the hidden knife? Just parry and easily one hit kill them. It’s not as bad here in this game but parrying is still pretty easy here. World: The look of the world itself and the setting is beautiful. Very beautiful. But that’s it. I thought this land was invaded by mongols but where are they? Here and there you walk upon some and here and there you have some bandits stealing and killing innocents, which you can fight. But that’s it. Not only the fights are easy, you don’t have many encounters and you literally need to look for them. In main or side missions you can see the scripted patrols further away and they’re really there and blocking ways or patrolling ways but once you’re outside of a mission in free roam, you have only the typical „random encounters“. They feel so overused after just a few. The setting itself and the story makes it good. The gameplay itself is only good in missions.

There was no need for the foxes, pillars and haikus. It was just boring busy work. Some of the main missions are more interesting than others. Comparing this to an open world like RDR2 which is equally beautiful and has basically one mechanic (shooting) yet still has a far more emotionally compelling story and far more complex characters, Ghost of Tsushima falls far short. 10/10 for visual splendor, 6.5-7/10 for everything else. The Good:
-The graphics and environments look fantastic
-The best photo mode I've ever seen in a game -Great presentation and ambiance -Combat is decent, although shallow The Bad: -The game is EXTREMELY repetitive -The story is bland and predictable -The enemy AI is horrendous, making stealth playthroughs unsatisfying -The combat is too easy, lacks depth, and eventually devolves

-There is absolutely no humor nor are there many interesting cinematic moments

Ghost of Tsushima is enjoyable for the first 10 or so hours, but the lack of actual progression in the game means the game feels extremely repetitive after a few hours. I really wanted to enjoy the game more, but I haven't played a game that felt so much like a grind in quite some time. Even Assassins Creed Odyssey had more variation than GoT (naval combat, mini games, etc.).

I really don't understand how this game has such a high user score. If you are looking for an open world game with variety and that doesn't feel like a grind, look elsewhere.

I'm going to start this by saying I haven't finished this game, I only got a lot bit into act two. The only reason I stopped here is because I felt like I experienced all the game had to offer. All the enemies were the same, all the "bosses" were the same, no new weapons, and all the areas look the same. I would keep playing if it gave me something new, but right now I'm just bored. Sorry but this is a beautiful game made by a developer who doesn't know what they're doing. It is a great tool for taking pretty screen shots, but I have to disagree with everyone else I guess. I've tried it on normal and got painfully PAINFULLY board of the combat. Now I'm playing it on hard and every single issue with the game is cropping up. Slow, useless camera controls. No spoilers, the first act of this game felt fresh and new compared to other open world games out there, I've spent over 70 hours and 100% the game to truly grasp how good or bad the game is and I can confidently say that this game from the first 6 hours is what I experienced for the next 70 or so hours. Which is so unfortunate because this game certainly over stayed it's welcome and it's so good in the first hours, but when you do mostly the same thing over and over again it breaks down an easily 10/10 game... it also doesn't help that the second act of the game is so weak compared to it's third and first for various really terrible story decisions in my humble opinion. The game finishes with a really strong final act though which really helped bring up the score and a fantastic soundtrack, but the game felt like it had repetitive game-play, dragged story, flashy but sometimes really unresponsive combat. It’s alright, basically assassins creed in ancient Japan. Story is pretty basic and characters bland but looks great and the fighting is fun enough

This game is extremely overated and here's why. The story is great but complain is disappointing. For starters the Ps5 upgrade is basically the same as the PS4 version so don't waste your money if you already own it. Standoffs have no guide. It leads you into unbeatable bosses not telling you that it's unbeatable. I hate it when games do this. It's like someone giving you something and then taking it away after. Gameplay feels like something from PS3. Graphics are -b at best. Combat works alright although parrying is basically pointless as it's high risk and low reward. Just block. Story is quite good but little to short.

В начале игра очень понравилась, однако со временем она приелась и квесты стали слишком скучными для их прохождения. Про сайд квесты я вообще молчу, нет никакого смысла их выполнять, так как они неинтересны и не дают ту награду, за которую их следует выполнять. And then 2020 happens. My YouTube feed has been filled up with multitude of positive video-reviews about Ghost of Tsushima by the same studio, but I tried to keep myself aside from it. However in 2022 they got me into eventually buying the game with 50% sale and... It's disappointing.
Ghost of Tsushima is the open-world game in best traditions of Sony exclusives. Moreover, it's a very basic one - it has completely nothing new to offer, which isn't a sin by itself. But what definitely is a sin is creating such a low-effort world to explore. After getting a platinum in 40 hours I can assure, that 80% of side quests follow the same scheme: talk to npc, follow npc, explore the area, follow the tracks, cut the mongols, talk to npc, clear. I'm not even joking - the core gameplay consists of watching the cutscenes and redeeming the camp, point. It may be fun at first, but gets old quite soon.
The main storyline isn't really worth it as well: it's a very lazy rip-off from Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, which is covered with plot armor. It's short (about 12 hours) and uninspired. If it was made into movie, no-one of you would've watched it.
The fighting system is much alike to the one of Nioh's with a plot twist: it's all about crowd-fights, which are constantly either too easy or too hard depending on if you grind the open-world or not. I used to suck at first due to lack of equipment, but after collecting collectibles it turned into kindergarden.
The graphics, art direction and performance are s-tier. The game runs perfectly on ps4 pro and looks absolutely gorgeous. The medieval Japan provides a wide landscape for photo mode, if you really care for taking some pictures. However there's almost nothing aside from little villages(in which houses are very obviously copy-pasted), fields and parodies of hills.
Music sound very harmonic and atmospheric, so nothing to complain about.
Minor props: absence of interface and wind navigation
Minor cons: inability to skip cutscenes
For the conclusion, I'd say that it's one of the most boring games I've played for last couple of years. I bet I wouldn't have made it to the end if I hadn't payed 30 euro for it.

This game is nothing but an incomplete copy of Assassin's creed, unfortunately, the gameplay is boring and repetitive, walking simulator, movie simulator

The best samurai game in a long time and a great fun for all, who love action. Love for Japan and its history is a big plus, but its knowledge is not necessary to enjoy every minute of this beautiful game. [Issue#305]

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
