Story is very good. Gameplay and combat mechanics are phenomenal. I had started on hard difficulty setting, didn't like it and went down to normal, but after some time I decided to try out Lethal setting - the best thing to do when playing this game! It's designed with great idea behind it - enemies deal more damage, but so does Jin. On this difficulty all fights make you feel like a real badass samurai. One parry, three quick strikes and most of your enemies are on the ground, and the rest is frightened, you can see this brief moment of hesitation in your enemies and this feels electrifying (I hardly ever used stealth). I cannot expres how much I love fighting in this game, but one more thing that I admire as much as fighting system is the cinematic roots of the game.
All of Tsushima looks amazing, and the fact that the wind guides player and interface is minimalistic makes you look around and just enjoy the landscapes and landmarks. One of the most beautiful games I've ever play, because the artistic vision behind this title is so clear and consistent. When I was playing this game I became sure that great artstyle is so much better than ultra-realistic presentation - very reminiscent of Dishonored, which is one of my favorite games ever because it had so much thought behind every audiovisual aspect of the game. (Also all of the players remember how great was the photo mode, easily the best I have seen in video game)
And when it came to audio, the pathetic compositions are exactly what this game needed!
Overall: The Ghost of Tsushima is great, one of my favorite games of all time, make yourself a favor and play it if you haven't already done it!

One word: masterpiece. The best thing for me is the world design. Even though the map is pretty big everything is absolutely beautiful. The combat, oh man the combat, it´s so satisfying. The story gets only better within the progress of the game. There are many dramatically made plot twists and I really fell into the story of the game quickly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. assassins creed japan is a pretty good game. I did not expect the story to be this good when i played it. Customisation is virtually endless as you can look freaking dope in this game. The graphics are a treat to see and it baffles me that i was playing on a ps4 slim given how amazing the graphics were. With that said the game did not cheap out on the gameplay and its really good. However the sidequests can feel very tiring to do sometimes and the endless horse rides are abit strange. I dont like how some character models are presented but hey, still a pretty solid game with little bugs. Good experience overall with an engaging story. Expand

An amazing underrated game. The visuals are amazing, the art directions of this game has to be one of the best so far. The combat feels amazing and the world is solid. It's true that it is not a revolutionary open world but with a great addition such as the wind mechanic.

I would recommend this game to everyone that has a PS4.

Expand

The good stuff: the music. the ost is so good. the japanese voice acting. the photo mode and art style are gorgeous. the combat. the side activities like writing poems or cutting bamboo were simple yet so rewarding and important to have in my opinion. The start of the story kept me invested until the end, and the end was emotional and memorable. The main quests and the mythic quests were so juicy and good. The online is free, well-done, and fun.

The story could have been slightlyyy deeper perhaps. Also, some side quests were fetch quests. The horse is not on the level of red dead redemtption, but as i said, this is an indie game, so with that in mind, it is fine. In contrast to rdr2 though, it was nice to have a horse that doesnt die, and picking the name for it was memorable and endearing. some settlements and npc's were not on the level of rockstar or guerilla game.

Overall, a more or less perfect package if you love feudal japan, immersion, exploration, variety, good sword combat, and japanese and mongolian traditional music. I commend the game and the developpers. I give this game a 93/100

Pretty basic mission design is the main thing that holds it back. The island has been captured and nearly all missions are fight to save somebody or fight to recover somebody/something. It wouldn't be that big of a deal if the characters you interacted with were better. They really needed some better writing and some more bonding moments. Maybe just an improvement to the character interactions with less standing and talking scenes. It wont be a big distraction just clearly something that needs improving.

The game world is expertly crafted and exploring it is a joy. Some big time set piece battles are very well done and you should flip your PS4 pro over to performance mode before going into those fights. A decent amount of cosmetic collectibles and suits of armor that are all designed with abilities for different playstyles. Took me 40 hours or so to finish everything and get the platinum trophy... I wasted lots of time fighting trash enemies that pop up around the map so it can be done shorter. Haven't enjoyed a open world game this much since the Witcher 3 even if it does fall short in that comparison.

The combat system was addictive and perfecting the various fighting styles and stances was satisfying.
There were a couple of things that bothered me, mainly the sluggish start to the campaign and the snowy region which just looked terrible (I sometimes couldn't see much because everything was so blindingly white and basic)

And apart from the silly AI at times and a few glitches, it was a really fun game. The landscape was beautiful and the side quests were just as enjoyable as the main story which by the end of it, was a hugely impactful and emotional one.

I played Ghost of Tsushuima right at the back of LOFU2 so it had big shoes to fill. Even though it's not on the same level, it hold its own ground exceptionally well.

Everything is fairly fluid and the visuals are absolutely gorgeous. The combat is flashy and punchy, but is a bit too simple for its own good, particularly for a game of this length. By the time you reach the second section of Tsushima island, you will be incredibly overpowered and capable of demolishing most encounters, and the game does fairly little to challenge you from there on out.

As an open world game, Tsushima shoots for the Horizon Zero Dawn method of "if it ain't broke don't fix it". It's a fairly generic open world structure; you take over enemy encampments, run random tasks for the inhabitants, and find points of interest to get cosmetics and various upgrades and items.

Some aspects of the game are a bit buggy or unpolished. The camera can become a monster in close quarter encounters; you may end up looking at the middle of a clipped-through tree while Jin gets wailed on by people you can't see or dodge. This isn't usually a problem in open plains or more spacious villages, but fighting indoors or in the denser wooded sections can be genuinely impossible at times. Fighting works pretty well usually, but you will have to adapt to a weird and stiff pseudo-lock on system. Jin will face an enemy, and begin moving slowly, and it can be a bit sluggish to jerk him out of that to target another enemy that's further away. Archery feels great, but drawing and knocking is inconsistent. If you press R2 too quickly after L2, Jin will just sit there and wait for you to repress R2. On that note, R2 is used far too much for context sensitive actions, crawl into a stealth area? R2. Pick up items? R2. Talk to people? R2. Grapple onto something? R2. Pull up your quick swap menus? R2. This all works ok, but can get awkward when you're collecting items and instead your menu comes up and slows it all down. It feels poorly thought out.

Overall these gameplay issues are fairly minor, but they will cause some annoyance pretty regularly.

The side content is consistently passable, although the mythic quests are particularly good. The general structure of most content is talk to a peasant, go do thing for them, oh no! They lied about something! Go tell them they shouldn't do that and get your reward. It's not very interesting but the combat and exploration is fun enough to carry it. The mythic quests bring a little more intrigue, usually bringing in some mystic or legendary elements and have much better set pieces about on par with the main story.

All in all, Sucker Punch set out to make a fun, polished, open world Kurosawa-esque samurai flick of a game, and they succeeded. It won't blow your mind very often, but it will suck you in with its setting and visuals. With a little more care, the combat could've stayed fresh throughout, and some of the padding could've been cut (we don't need to follow a fox for 20 seconds 49 different times, please and thank you) to make the stronger content really shine. I'd probably give this an 8.3 or 8.4, maybe an update will smooth out my issues and push this closer to a 9.

I just really liked the world. It was a beautiful world to be in and walk around. Rarely do I stop to admire the scenery in triple A games even though games like Uncharted 4 repeatedly tell you to **** do it. However in this game I found myself purposefully walking instead of running just so I could soak it all in. The story is well told. If you know anything about samurai you know they wouldn't be down for sneaking around and stabbing people in the back. Thankfully the story touches on this a lot, more than just a throw away justification. The side characters also have their own side missions that focus on their storyline. Those weren't too interesting to me so frankly didn't finish any of them. My time in the world clocked in around 30 hours I would guess.

The gameplay is fun and exciting because successfully parrying is very important as it gives you the ability to heal and do special moves. However the gameplay doesn't really change as your progress. There are duels, which essentially are boss fights, but they are pretty much the same throughout. The enemies are slightly different but overall the same. You have different stances to deal with different enemy types but that also doesn't feel like a noticeable change to the gameplay. I don't have a problem with this but it should be mentioned. Speaking of the boss fights, they are intense! And failure doesn't feel punishing. You start the duel right from the beginning a mere 5 or so seconds after gameover. Actually I kind of wished there was a press X to continue option just so I could collect myself before the rematch. But who can complain about ultra fast load times right?

Some of my personal favorites have included “Until Dawn,” “Horizon Zero Dawn” “Detroit: Become Human” “Spider-Man” and, as controversial as it’ll be to say this, “The Last of Us Part II” (there are quite a few I haven’t played like “Bloodborne,” “Nioh,” and “Gravity Rush 2,” but I do plan to play games like “inFAMOUS Second Son,” “The Last Guardian,” “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End,” and “God of War,” for example). And with the new consoles quickly approaching, it seems we’re looking at what is essentially the swan songs of the eighth generation. Months ago, Microsoft gave us what I believed was theirs with the stunning “Ori and the Will of the Wisps” (though we still have “Battletoads” to look forward to later this month), and now Sony has given us what looks to be their final exclusive title in “Ghost of Tsushima,” a samurai adventure developed by the good people at Sucker Punch Productions, responsible for the excellent “Sly Cooper” series, as well as the also-beloved “inFAMOUS” franchise. And as a full-stop for eighth-generation exclusives (it seems), this is a pretty great note to end on!
“Ghost of Tsushima” serves in a lot of ways as a tribute to Japanese culture, while also being a pretty loving homage to Japanese films, specifically those made by legendary director Akira Kurosawa. It does a very respectful job, and while I wouldn’t say the writing or characters absolutely floored me, I still think both elements were good. The visuals in the game are absolutely breathtaking, and in every aspect, the game looks beautiful. I also love the cinematography throughout the game, and I think it’s quite an incredible attention to detail that the game added a black-and-white “Kurosawa mode” that adds to the game’s loving homage to the director’s filmography. The gameplay is also something to behold: the controls are extremely fluid, the combat is precise and layered without being too overwhelming to deal with, and the stealth sections are suitably tensing. This is a game that does a lot of things right, and serves as yet another reason why Sony’s first-party games have been among the best of this generation.
I will say, though, that I did have a few problems with the game that slightly detracted from the experience. A few minor gameplay frustrations did bog things down a bit for me (the lack of a great “lock-on” to enemies, and the game presenting dialogue options to make you think choices matter when they don’t), but I would say my biggest issue was that I wish the game’s open-world activities were more interesting. While the world itself was certainly beautiful to look at, it didn’t really feel all that exciting to me, and there were definitely times where it did feel like I was just going through a checklist of objectives. Most of the time, when playing open-world games, I’m totally okay with traveling across the game’s world to get to my next story mission, but with “Ghost of Tsushima,” there were definitely points where I felt more inclined to simply fast-travel closer to the story missions to mitigate traveling. The game had the feeling of going through the motions that open-world games tend to go through, and while I’m not sure who will agree, I would’ve been interested to see how this would’ve faired as a linear game.
Even so, “Ghost of Tsushima” is a pretty great adventure. Even if it’s not my absolute favorite PlayStation 4 exclusive game, it’s a real testament to Sony’s excellent output this generation that a game can be this good, and still not be one of my favorites that they’ve put out this generation. It’s a suitably beautiful swan song to the PlayStation 4, and another adventure that epitomizes Sony’s dominance this generation. If you haven’t played it yet, I highly recommend you give it a shot. As a way of waving goodbye to the PlayStation 4 (at least in terms of exclusives), this is quite a way to go out. Thank you, PlayStation 4, for so many wonderful memories and great exclusive titles, I hope the PlayStation 5 keeps up the amazing work.
Final rating: 8 out of 10 “Great”

Ghost of Tsushima could've been a mediocre game at best, but it proves to be much better than many other open world games out there.

This is probably the most beautiful game I've ever played, after TLOU2. Part of the reason why it is so fantastic is because of its scenery. The art direction and evinronmental design is near-perfect here and it merges VERY WELL with story and gameplay.

This is probably the most beautiful game I've ever played, after TLOU2. Part of the reason why it is so fantastic is because of its scenery. The art direction and evinronmental design is near-perfect here and it merges VERY WELL with story and gameplay. The island of Tsushima is so rich with beauty and secrets to find, that makes you ACTUALLY strive to defend it from the Mongols. It makes you give a ****
The gameplay is also top-notch. I confess that it took me a long while to fully get used to the combat but, when it clicks, it CLICKS. It mixes style with substance with ease and makes every single encounter be slightly different or intense enough to make you search for more. Especially during the big battles that the story throws you in.

Exploration (of course) plays a gigantic role in how you'll enjoy the game's progress and I'm happy to say that riding and running through the fields of Tsushima is one of the "chillest" things in gaming, in 2020. Discovering secrets, experiencing the calm soundtrack, collecting masks, flowers, completing objectives, raising your legend status and doing everything else that the open world has to offer is stunning. It might get repetitive, since objectives lose variety halfway through the 2nd act, outstaying its welcome a bit, but it's nothing gamebreaking and it's just incredible how GoT's collectables managed to keep me interested until the credits roll. Even the sidequests got me hooked. There are some very fun and well-written ones.

But the story is probably the weakest part of GoT. While it does get better in the 2nd act, characters have no charisma and the writing lacks any surprises and charm. It does come with some impactful high stakes moments and a few enjoyable samurai tropes, but not enough to make it stand out.
Combat, while VERY stylish, does require some time to get used to. At first, it might feel clunky, especially when you're fighting many enemies. Fighting does not work against mobs in this game. Also, stealth mechanics, while seviceable, only work when you done perfectly. Problem is, GoT will seldom give you space or a path to always eliminate entire groups by only using stealth.

One last thing that might push you away from Ghost of Tsushima is how "cliché" it can become. It is an open world that WILL get repetitive, DOES use a bunch of systems and mechanics from others of the genre and NO, it's not as good as industry colossi like The Witcher 3 or Zelda BOTW.
    The thing is: That's fine!
Ghost of Tsushima gets all of those clichés and problems, put them in a powerful blender and makes an impressive and bonafide juice with it.
If you like action and open world games, I definitely recommend this one. It's one of the most remarkable exclusives on the console.

Unless... Unless you don't like the samurai, for some reason.

So what about GoT? It's a really great game in first act and part of 2nd, but then it rams into a typical open world game "wall" - the point where it gets really repetitive and boring. You're just clearing those places on a map like bamboo cuts, duels, haikus and other collectible **** So by the 3rd act you're really bored with it + snowy setting ain't helping with adding even minimal variety. You're just running from one mongol camp to another (there's even chain of side quests involving this - to give you some motivation lol). Sooo..

Its a good open world game with satisfying combat. It doesn't try to do much that's new. Its pretty standard stealth and fighting very much like an Assassin's Creed game. It has a lot of character and depth. It also looks pretty outdated. Its almost a comic book drawing style. The "fur" texture on the armor is really muddy looking and it looks like use of a lot of 2014 assets.

-Excellent environmental design. Nice Graphics. The colors are spectacular. Environments are varied.

-Great Swordplay really holds everything together. The combat is fun throughout.

-Nice tech tree branch will useful new powers to unlock. Really does a good job of making you feel like you are becoming a bigger samurai baddass as you move through the game.

-Some fun side activities like Haikus and Bamboo slicing. These are fun but fleeting.
    -Story is solid.

-Boss duels are great with an epic standoff before each bout.

-Decent immersion for exploration with the guiding wind, but it gets old eventually. Nice touch though.

-Can also forget stealth and call out enemies for a standoff, which is pretty cool. I like how the game gives me the choice with how to deal with a particular situation. Go stealthy or march right up to the gate and call out the fiercest warrior of the group for a one on one showdown. Very epic.

-Exploration is also fairly solid. The game does not hold your hand as much as other open world games and there are some nice environments to discover.

And although there many little great details that add to overall enjoyment of this game, like lots of outfit customizing, in the end the game suffers from much of the same faults that the open world rpg genre is known for.

-Not enough variety in missions and side missions are basically all the same variation of one mission.
    -
Tailing missions are here. Tail an enemy to a location without being seen. Boring and dumb. Overall the structure of the missions are very similar to Ubisoft open world titles with some small exceptions. Ie., go to location and free outpost, save hostages, etc, etc,. Unique missions are quite low in number.

-Enemies are very low on variety and it's gets to the point were you are just bored. You will see guys with swords, Swords and Shields, bows, and spear type weapons. Eventually bomb throwers appear too but they are basically archers. For each type, there is also a Brute variant, which is basically a big version of the aforementioned types. And that's it. It gets old fighting these same old guys non stop.

-Craftable loot has made into this game as well. Gather up tons of stuff to upgrade gear. It's tedious now and forever. Also, tons of collectibles lying around that are absolutely pointless like in any other open world game.

-Platforming is very basic and gimicky. Nothing new here.

-Stealth is very by the numbers. If you've played AC series you know what to expect. Hid in tall grass or on a rooftop and then stab guys in the back. Unlock more powers like stab two people at once, LOL. Then unlock option to stab THREE people in the back. More LOLs. The one cool thing is you can stab guys through bamboo doors. It never gets old. But the rest is just blah. AI is dumb as a rock. It's more fun to approach openly and duel and skip the stealth part.

-Oh yeah, there are forced stealth sections, LOL.

There are a few other minuses but honestly, the immersion, story, and swordplay really make the game shine, and it's polished. I have not seen any bugs. Not one so far. It's very solid Samurai epic with a lot of style, so I can definitely recommend a buy here. I just really wish one these companies would figure out a way to overhaul the mission structure in these open world games. The genre really needs to move forward. Zelda:BOTW and RDR2 did it better, but this is still a very solid game.

There is not a lot new here, but it's a very well made game. It's basically what Assassins Creed Japan would be like if UbiSoft wasn't so hell bent against doing the obvious. When you take a well-worn formula and add fantastic presentation (kurisawa mode is a nice touch) and storytelling, you get a great game.

but i do not really 100% like what it wants to accomplish. A super tiny bit of Japanese fairytale and magic would have spiced up the game significantly. i think the game will look way way better on PS5 and i am already not happy with some of the textures being flat and pretty boring , but the overall esthetics is GOOD! and nice and the environments are nice but its really limited by what a ps4 can do. But they made the best of ps4.

it drags a bit it feel a bit too similar to assassins creed/Farcry/tombraider/last of us 1/etc etc.. so i am a bit special here because i played way too many open world games already so GoTS feels way too similar but my friend who did not play a lot of open world games likes it way more..

so i would like to have a "skip" button for people like me that have seen the entry of the first boss a 1000000 times but then it would break the game for first timers.

so i give it a 8/10 , its solid, its good, its recommneded, it does what it came here for with a solid performance but for me, this is not enough for a new game but then its the last of the ps4..

Here you play as jin, a samuri that sets ojt to stop the mongols, but your entire journey is an internal struggle of honor the samari way, or in the shadows the ezio way… ghost of tsushi,a does not mask that it sets out to marry the wither 3 and the desmond saga of assassins creed, and this is what it does… the open world here is absolutely stunning, its beautiful, second only to the witcher 3.. however while great to look at, it doesn’t ever really feel alive, its not enticing or full of intrigue, its just something really pretty to look at while youre riding from mission to mission, however there is some incentive to explore as this is a map cleaner, not an overwhelming map cleaner like recent ac games have become, but just the right balance of do I wanna ignore the store and find some collecabtles or do some side missions to level up my character or gear? Which brings me to the skill tree and progression in this game.. its alright… I feel a skill tree should make the game youre playing more enjoyable, and ghosts of tsushimas does to an extent, but again not anything drastic here, I eenjoyed initially hunting won materials, caliming mongol territories as my own so that I would upgrade my sword and armour, but after I got to a point wher I felt comfortable existing in this would, there was not much I cared to save up for which in turn lead me to ignoring the side activities and going right through this 18 hour long story after I got bored of its world… really showing why exactly ubisoft has stayed away from this setting.. theres not much you can do in a forest setting outside of the fantasy genre… when it comes to stealth and combat, this is an aspect where ghost of tsushima feels a bit dated and janky, neither of the two options are any fun, I find shield clashing in combat to be highly unsatisfying, and this is how ghost of tsushima feels from start to finish, I like that batman arkham feel when youre just beating up a bunch of grunts, I hate hwoever when the riot shield guys come in to break up my flow… this is literally every eveny in ghost of tsushima, the spam hold the block button like your little sister playing a fighting game with you, I get that this game has different stances to deal with each weapon type, but still.. its annoying and made me dread combat… I would use the stand off option every chance I got so id have the opportunity to take out as many enemies out before battle starts as possible just to not deal with them… this is not a good sign in a game so combat focused and heavy… and onto the mission structure and story.. its boring, no memorable missions, tons of missions that have that good ole, don’t get detected or you automatically fail stipulation of assassins creed fame, and its again just annoying.. you don’t really feel you have the tools necessary at your disposal to make stealth missions like this enjoyable like they can be in an assassins creed game.. and constant return to the story area countdowns really making me feel like im in the animus.. that being said, ghost of tsushima is a great game… hard to believe with all of the ranting I just did, but I loved it… it took a good 10 hours until I was bored of its open world, and again this world Is gorgeous, it’s a great experience alone just to be able to live in this world, to chase down its legendary moves, obviously certain missions are necessary to unlocking different abilities, but ghost of tsushima would almost be a better game without a campaign, just a world to go explore and breathe in.
And you have no idea how happy I am that we no longer have to hear assassins creed fans cry about feaudal japan .

The gameplay itself is fantastic, the combat and stealth mechanics are smooth and satisfying. I've played what feels like a hundred hours, and the narrative and characters are interesting enough to make this time spent feel worthwhile.

However, I can't tell you i've gained much from the experience other than some pretty decent screenshots. With animals to follow and discover, no HUD to distract, and a wind mechanic that removes the need for a typical way point, you'd be fooled for thinking the game is immersive or unique. These are great ideas, and as said, they draw your eyes to the scenery, but sadly, they don't keep them there. The game feels like a standard Ubisoft title. A big map littered with repeating locations and things to do. A map that still end up being used as often as in any other game. Also, a very serious criticism, has to be the terrible AI. Moreover, its quite astonishing how easy the game is to play. (I played on normal, like i do with any game, and there are long stretches, tens of hours, where i didn't even come close to dieing.)

In all honesty, this game might be the most accessible game of its type (I'm assuming this explains the high user review score). There's no doubt that this is a positive. But sadly, it leaves an empty feeling when you realise how unoriginal so much of the game's core is. All of the game's themes and gameplay elements good, but also kind of uninspired.

Sucker Punch has perfected the style they set out for, and have immediately mastered the open world genre...but they have done so in the existing template so many developers before them had already established. Its a great game, just not a particularly memorable one.

With that said..some of it is a lot of fun..even clearing 5 dozen camps and Jin is a good character to work with in the future...but a game that lacks more meaningful content once the main/side stories are done..doesn't deserve a 9.3 imo and think both recent Infamous titles were better

The game is also very orientalist. Making the samurai honor-bound morons. Their own tyranny and brutal combat tactics of the time are "condemned" and contextualized by Jin's "ghost" persona. It uses a bunch of historically spliced together themes, and set dressing - and it does all this with developers saying they weren't going for historical accuracy but instead based around Kurosawa's films... which it fails at. None of the characters save Yuna, and perhaps Masako really feel like characters from his films. Even then Masako feels like a facimile of a Kurosawa character. Further more the games attempt at plot and theming don't feel anything like a Kurosawa film either. So when you mix everything from what developers have stated their intentions were you don't really get that. What you get is the Western idea of what a samurai and what ancient Japan might be like.

I studied a lot about Japanese cultural evolution and history in college. I have several native Japanese friends, and history teachers. I am also a massive Kurosawa fan. So going into this game I had low expectations about what I was getting.

My only advice is that if you find this stuff cool? Please research it. Please don't take your history lesson or Japanese cultural heritage knowledge from this game. Samurai are pretty much regarded as **** and brutal warriors in Japan. In this game they are justice honor-bound idiots (which is why they lose to Mongols... when in history it was due to the technological divide war wise).

All that said. If you go in expecting a Western take on what samurai are, and that it's not how actual Japan is/was/sees samurai anf their own history --- you're in for a treat. It really is THAT good. Just keep in mind that the game is inaccurate as hell, doesn't even really capture "samurai cinema" (btw film recommendations are Hara-Kiri, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and even Ran)

Instead it feels like a less offensive and slightly more culturally researched Last Samurai.

Main and Side stories: The main story is engaging. It is a fight you have to take to free the people of Tsushima but your hero will have to sacrifice everything he belives in to do so. But as you fight your way through ranks of enemies you will find allies whom will help you. They have stories on their own and I wish some RPG games like Pillars of Eternity had such amazing companion stories as this game. Each of them has a chain of quests that can't be done right away but are progressing with the main story. Each quest is short and gives you ust a bit of the story and conclusion of all of the quest chains is emotional and worth seeing.
Gameplay: The swordfight feels satisfying and "right". Each skill point gives you additional abilities and you have that pleasant feeling of progression. Of course stelthy approach is built as in any other AAA game so your opponents are blind and unable to look up. Everything else is just industry standard at this point.
Open World: This one is tricky. The best thing about this world was that every quest, doesn't matter if it is a main, side quest or just a simple activity is very short. It was super easy for me to play this game for a half an hour and feel that I did something. I didn't feel forced to sit longer but I always wanted too because I always could stop after just one more short quest. The bad part is: the open world was mostly riding a horse. You ride 2 minutes through the map, gather one item or slash through a bamboo stand, and you go off again. Or slay through an enemy camp. The quest were interesting but every other activity was boring. For the most part of the game I felt like uncovering the map pixel by pixel.
Visuals and Music: The game is mesmerizing. Views are amazing. Swaying grass, falling leaves and wind everywhere around you. Music is simply stunning. It always fits the situation and touches some strings of your feelings or enhances the scene. It is one that I added to my playlist to listen during work.

Looks amazing with incredible art along with great sound design. Also plays really well with fun combat and nice little ideas with regards to exploration. Ultimately still openworld 101 though, with little innovation when it comes to it’s structure and story telling, and because of that I find it repetitive and I get bored after a couple of hours.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful open world with a greatly immersive guidance system. Swordplay is excellent. Main story is good, without being great. The "twist" can be seen a mile off, but its still very well told.
Companion tales are excellent, though Norio's could probably cut to the chase quicker.

Side tales can be a bit cookie cutter, although the stories thar envelope them are well told and generally very sad.

Camera lock on is an issue.
Other activities are a bit repetitive too. Platinum hunters will be sick of fox dens very quickly.

A pretty solid action game. The weak point has to be the game's main story. Its slowness prevents it from being interesting. I found the side quests being far more interesting.

The combat is pretty good though I did seem to have issues with targeting when fighting multiple opponents at times. I had a habit of avoiding stealth because I sucked at it and just went in to try to kill my way

The combat is pretty good though I did seem to have issues with targeting when fighting multiple opponents at times. I had a habit of avoiding stealth because I sucked at it and just went in to try to kill my way through most of the time. Luckily, the different stances and styles they give you to counter certain enemy types made it all the more enjoyable.

The open world is alright compared to most other games. There are certain times when it does feel empty, but over the course of the game, they add a few things here and there to try to make it more interesting.

In my opinion the plot would have improved with a shorter game or creating more touching moments. About the gameplay, some people compare it with Assassin's Creed and although some things can remind you the latest AC, you don't need to grind doing sidequests to beat the enemies of the main story as the recent AC make you do and that's good news for me. Also, you can collect things very fast to improve your armour and weapons which with other games that want to be more realistic makes you spend more time.

It took me about 25 hours and 30 minutes to beat having only done a few sidequest. Now I'm going to finish the most important sidequests and I'll stop playing. If you do the sidequests of the main characters you may win some new things to fight with but I think that you'll enjoy more the game if you stick to the main story and do few extra things that you find in your way if you feel to.

It's a must have? Well, with so many crap videogames we have these days, yes, it is.

Ghost of Tsushima (from now on GoT) is a game set in feudal Japan during the first Mongol invasion of Tsushima island. It's a very cool game to play, but lacks some elements that would elevate it into being an outstanding game of its generation.

Story/characters: The protagonist is Jin Sakai, a samurai with the duty to defend the island and its people from the invaders. Jin struggles between upholding the bushido code of honor and, well, adopting dis-honorable and shady techniques in order to fight the invaders. This internal conflict and the moral issues behind all this actually makes for some great character set up and potential growth, but alas it's never explored seriously. Actually the way Jin transitions into the Ghost is ridiculous at best, a ghost whose identity is known to everyone isn't a ghost. Jin's uncle (and father-like figure) Lord Shimura is so fixated with the code of honor it almost made me LOL. The antagonist is mongol chief Khotun Khan, a ruthless warrior with a strategic mind, but again the developers mess him up. That's actually GoT's one but big sin, the developers and writers set up some potentially cool characters and events but don't take them as far as they should, and the story lacks the impact of other games such as The Last of Us 1 and God of War.

World/graphics: GoT is an open world game, with the most beautiful map and special effects I've seen to date in a game. Yes you'll see some low-polygon objects or NPCs here and there, but what the developers have achieved on PS4 is insane. The number of moving grass and lieves is on another level compared with Sucker Punch's inFamous Second Son and its particles. Riding on horseback and galloping through thousands of moving white-topped grass with the wind blowing over the field never gets old. The map is littered with a very high number of spots and beautiful vistas, ranging from villages and forts to shrines and hot springs, and more. Akin to old Assassin's Creed games there are a few temples you can reach by platforming. Other cool things the developers have implemented is the wind (which acts as a gentle waypoint when swiping upwards the Dualshock 4's touchpad) and the fox/golden bird (which if you follow they will guide you to a nearby shrine or something else). GoT evokes the atmosphere of feudal Japan like few other games, you can even select to play in Kurosawa mode, a black-and-white film filter and a tribute to the great japanese film-maker. But I have to say, the developers have overdone it with the collectibles and almost got as bad as an Ubisoft game (although it's not as ridiculous as AC Odyssey, not even close).

Gameplay: GoT's focus is on combat, and the developers have 100% nailed it. Jin uses both a katana sword and bow, but also gadgets (kunai, smoke bomb, etc.) to give him an edge when facing multiple opponents. Gadgets can mask a bad sword combat system, but fear not, the sword combat system is great, you can verify it when dueling an opponent, where you can only fight the enemy with the sword, no gadgets allowed. I play the game on Hard difficulty and it's quite challenging, although it's not as tough to play as Dark Souls or Sekiro. However enemy AI is pretty dumb just like most other games, and consequently GoT doesn't compare favorably with Metal Gear or Hitman as a stealth game, even though you are supposed to also play stealthily as a Ghost.

Sound/voice acting: GoT features a majestic OST with traditional japanese music. You can play the game with either english or japanese dialogues. Sound effects are of high quality.

Overall: Ghost of Tsushima is a very cool game to play, especially if you are interested in Japanese history and tradition, but it falls a bit short of greatness due to an under-cooked story and set of characters, while also lacking an enemy AI worth of the challenge.

White fields, red and green woods, snowy mountains, and yet there is still so much more. There is many games that features wild life, but I don't remember being allowed to interact with wilderness as Sakai in this game, where you have to follow golden bird or cuddle with the red foxes. It's a small detail but something that makes you feel like a part of the nature.

Although I liked the protagonist, I can see why some would find him monotone, despite it being explained in the game. Besides that, all the supporting characters are memorable and have great story, whether it's about a tragedy or vengeance.

Although the game is amazing, there is a few drawbacks. There are some glitches I've come across, but they don't ruin the experience. Another thing that is missing a proper target system, when you're fighting a horde of enemies, it can be frustrating to hit the correct enemy, for a more sufficient result. Another notable cons are enemy AI quite often is brain-dead. One thing that the game is missing is choices that could impact the game, the story line is hinting at that you can be an honorable samurai or stealthy ghost, whatever approach you choose, it never impacts the story. Sucker Punch has great experience in that system from the years of inFamous, so I was kinda expecting to see some for of the system in GoT.

Overall, I enjoyed the game. With the additional co-op mode coming soon this game will be a 10/10 contender.

Some graphic details are amazing, but most of these details are aesthetics. Animations are irregular, sometimes they look great and other times not so much. The AI of the enemies is pretty bad, and is most notable in stealth. Tsushima Island is kinda empty and repetitive, you'll find the same group of 3 animals, the same group of soldiers, the same villager you'll have to save, one fox den, one bird, one temple, a camp. And then repeat all over again.

The main story is pretty predictable but entertaining. The legendary side quests are much more interesting since some side characters overshadow Jin's story. The normal side quests are pretty much the same fetch / kill and return.

The duels are the most entertaining part of the game and their visuals are where the game shines the most.

The multiplayer adds some stories, and they introduce magical and fantasy elements as Onis, a sorceress, possessed beings and ghosts. It has other two different modes, but we have seen this better done in Nioh or Sekiro.

A solid game, entertaining but just that.

The scale and the size of the world is massive and can be overwhelming at times, the story really sucked me in, the story is fantastic with so many twists and turns, the side stories are great and the music complements.

The only downside is that I felt somewhat forced to play a single armor set for exploration and in my playthrough I actually spent 99% of my time in this set, this is because it is the only piece that helps clear the fog of war on the map somewhat more efficiently... knocked 2 stars off because of this as this will likely affect those with OCD for map visibility and Sucker Punch could have done more to balance this.

I should start this off by stating I've put in 65 hours and acquired the platinum trophy for this game, as I feel as though my views should be based on the entirety of the game and not the first 3 hours, with that said lets get into it.

Sucker Punch's new IP Ghost of Tsushima is one of the most enjoyable PS exclusives I have played since Persona 5, along with God of War and Spider-Man I feel these games have been the best exclusives Sony has offered.

Although Ghost of Tsushima is a brilliant game it isn't without it's faults, so I'll cover the good and bad parts.

Let's start with the main focus point, the visuals. Graphically not one of the best as I do feel as though there are games out there better, but as far as PS4 games go I have yet to see a game visually better... The mix of the contrast and colours is sublime, it really makes the scenery beautifully immersive and playing on a 4K OLED TV in Dolby Vision HDR really increases the potential of the game. One thing that lets it down is the awful lip syncing to the Japanese audio, I feel as though even in English the lip sync would look bad.

The sound is outstanding, to the point where I had to use my soundbar as I felt TV speakers just wasn't hitting it well enough. The soundtrack is brilliant, the voice acting (played with Japanese audio) is spot on and the subtle sounds of archers shouting allowing you to know which direction enemies are firing from helps so much.

Gameplay is so enjoyable, there's nothing innovative but everything it does, it does really well. The balance of stealth and samurai is done really well and you don't feel forced to do either so it's really on your personal preference. The stealth could have been polished a bit more, it's not bad but it is very basic and doesn't have much range and flavour.

The final aspect I want to hit is the story, now as it starts there's not much emotion in the characters other than serious, every character is serious in this game and it's expected considering it's during a war but as you progress through the Story the emotions between characters become more in depth and you gain more of an appreciation for them. By the third and final act I was really invested in each characters story (side missions) and I grew quite attached to some of the none essential characters even becoming quite emotionally attached to them.

As things go this year Ghost of Tsushima is probably my favourite game so far, that's saying something as well considering Ori and The Will of the Wisp was an incredibly good game,

I found the narrative incredibly obnoxious; it was so cool to stop combat to watch a scene about how dishonorable Jin felt he was being. The open world was interesting but overall not that stand out; the game offers very little replay value. By the end of the game combat is basically pointless because you’re an unstoppable force. The game was visually impressive and controls work; stealth is as much of a meme as it is in any stealth game. It was fun but not a console generation defining masterpiece. Expand

I was really hyped for this game and then came the disappointment.

Most of the side missions and even some of the main ones have very simplistic animations. Feels like an old RPG game with basic lip movement. I can understand such things in side emissions but not in the main arc! Secondly, the locations are very repetitive, you can see the assets being reused all over again I wish they were more creative with the locations, the world which happens to be beautiful in some areas after a while feels repetitive and boring. Following Inaris and birds to secret locations were fun at first but then became tedious. Why create a huge empty world? I am hallway through the story and the cliches are overwhelming, it has it moments but don't expect witcher quality script writing here. What deserves praise are the costumes and the soundtrack. Of course the costumes of the main characters cos the NPC are generic as hell. As goes for the gameplay, solid stealth mechanics but can become clunky at times , fighting is sweet playing either as samurai or ghost feels very rewarding. also if you are a fan of Japanese aesthetics than it is the best Japanese styled game hands down-just not as good as expected. I was hoping for a game that would score at least 9 out of 10 (in my own world of course)

Its recreation of Tsushima island is gorgeous and cohesive in its 13th century Japanese identity - scattered throughout the island are tons of fox dens, torii gates and hot springs. The character of the game just leads to a really immersive experience.

The game's story sees its protagonist, Jin Sakai, become the titular Ghost as he employs ever more dishonourable tactics to defeat the enemy and repel the Mongol invasion. It's a fun story to watch unfold, and it culminates in a genuinely emotional final duel that tops things off brilliantly.

Ghost of Tsushima certainly delivers on the gameplay front too - the combat is fluid and stylish, and the different sword stances afford it some depth. The bows feel good to use and there are enough other projectiles and abilities to keep combat fresh.

It must be said that the graphics and art direction in this game are excellent. The use of colour in particular leads to some lush, tranquil scenery, the vibrancy of which makes this recreation of Tsushima island a treat for the eyes. If you're anything like me, you'll be spending a lot of time in photo mode.

Another thing I'd like to praise is the guiding wind feature - swiping up on the touchpad causes the wind to blow around you in the direction of your current objective. This removes the need for a mini-map which helps to maintain the minimalist HUD, and I just think it's a smart little feature.

Ghost of Tsushima has a healthy amount of content, but it's not without some bloat. Some of the side quests are unexciting, and even though the open world busywork has a charm to it, it is still repetitious by nature.

Overall, this is a great title. It sticks to a tried-and-tested formula, but it does it so well that it doesn't matter; it's not a complete breath of fresh air, but it's a fitting swan song for the PS4.

    Intro
From the developer behind Sly Cooper and Infamous franchise comes an unusual departure from the status quo that Sucker Punch Studios is normally accustomed to. A historic fiction game about samurai overcoming the Mongol empire. Samurai games are nothing new to the world of video games but ever since its announcement, I hoped that Sucker Punch could put enough of their own spin on the genre to make something truly special. To my surprise, Sucker Punch has succeeded in most areas that would make this game a hit.

    Story – 3/3
Jin Sakai, the main protagonist, is tasked to take out a new threat as the Mongols grow ever more brutal. Most of Jin’s closest allies are taken out within minutes, leaving him as one of the last of his kind. Conflicted on whether he should defeat this new threat with honorable samurai tactics or using more questionable methods. It’s an entertaining story about the inner conflict within Jin Sakai and the sacrifices that he might have to make to save his people. Normally most stories within a Feudal Japan era never keep my interested but I was on the edge of my seat for all of the 20-hour adventure. If you’re in it for the story, this is a must-play adventure.

    Gameplay – 3/4
This is your standard hack and slash affair or so it seems when you first start out. The game consists of having buttons for light and heavy attacks along with blocking/parry moves. The real fun is when learning on how to weave different stances together to make Jin truly unstoppable. Each stance can be switched on the fly and each one is super effective on one particular enemy. Even on hard difficulties, this game feels balanced as it will only kick your ass if you have no clue on how to use the systems put in place. Open world exploration is the best I have seen in any game due to the natural ways you can discover things within the world. Winds blowing in the direction of your objective, foxes and birds guiding you to secrets within the world. You get a sense of how beautiful this world can be and shows you some more peaceful moments before the chaos happens. The only thing I had an issue with was the smaller side missions. There are 3 types of missions, story missions, characters side missions, and regular side missions. The character side missions are a lot of fun as they expand on characters within the main story and give them more to do but regular side missions were bland. The game's full run time of 60 to 70 hours was stretch a bit thin if you’re going to 100% completion. Ghost of Tsushima is still fun in the gameplay department, just expect for it to get a bit bland near the ended mark.

    Technical – 2/3
The graphics are pretty good. On the level of 2017’s Horizon: Zero Dawn when comparing it to another open-world game. Glitches happen every now again like attacks phasing through enemies or QTE showdowns getting stuck by enemies walking away instead of staying in place. Music is really good but nothing I would seek out after playing the game. Its pretty polish and on the level you would expect from a Sony first-party title.

    Verdict
Ghost of Tsushima is an amazing samurai game that gets so close to masterpiece status. An engaging story, interesting gameplay mechanics, and amazing open-world design greatly overpower small problems like lackluster side missions and small technical hiccups. This is a must-buy if you own a PS4 as this game will go down as the perfect send-off for AAA games on the PS4.

I hope this is a sign of gamings future. The story is beautiful and the world is glorious. It's a bit long. I would have liked a 30 hour game better. Anyways, I'm writing this review over a year after it came out, so who cares. Expand

The best samurai game in a long time and a great fun for all, who love action. Love for Japan and its history is a big plus, but its knowledge is not necessary to enjoy every minute of this beautiful game. [Issue#305]

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
