Best graphics I've ever seen, twist and turns throughout the story, it actually questions what you would do in the situation. The in-game weather is determined by how much honor you play with. No need to wonder around on the mini map as the wind guides you. Combat techniques are great. Theres really nothing bad you can say about this game.

Very beautiful, lots of fun, but repetative. Every mission basically boils down to "go here, kill everyone". And the random fights you get into are like random battles in an RPG.

Luckily the combat is pretty good, and the game is fun to play.

This game sure is fun to play! I couldn't believe my eyes, it runs so well on my old PS4 and looks awesome. The game doesn't force you to do quests or explore- you're free to do whatever you want. One can just walk around, play flute and compose Japanese poems.

My actual rating for Ghost of Tsushima is more accurately a 9.8. My 1 and ONLY issue with this game is that they should have portrayed Samurai primarily using long pole arms to fight wars and only use katanas as a last resort. Aside from that, this game is damn near a masterpiece.

It's a solid game. The combat is fun, the art style and voice acting are amazing, exploration is fun, the story is pretty good and it's presented very well. It could perhaps use a some more unique quests every now and then, but by no means are the quests bad. It's a great first entry into the franchise and I'm looking forward to an inevitable sequel.

With this being the PS4's final exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima delivers a great story about honor alongside great combat and stealth gameplay.

The story takes place during the Mongol invasion of Tsushima island, with protagonist Jin Sakai being a survivor of the brutal attack on his home after failing to defend it with his samurai army. Jin's uncle Shimura is captured by the enemy while Jin is rescued by a thief, Yuna, who helps him recover. After initially failing to rescue Shimura, Jin decides to work with Yuna and recruits allies to aid in rescuing his uncle and drive the Mongol army away, all the while performing dishonorable actions that go against the samurai code (i.e. killing Mongols through stealth than through normal sword fighting).

The plot deals heavily with the themes of honor and dishonor and is shown through the evolution of Jin's character. He initially is reluctant to assassinate enemies from the shadows, but over time, he becomes more accustomed to these new methods that many would deem shameful. He eventually decides to do whatever it takes to win back Tsushima and sees that honor and the samurai teachings won't be that helpful to him if it means that lives can't be saved at the end of the day. This transformation into his Ghost persona is done well and affects his relationship with his uncle, who disapproves of what Jin becomes. Their relationship is shown in flashbacks where we see how much they care for each other, with their present day relationship slowly deteriorating and souring in between these moments of the past. The ending of their relationship also coincides with the ending of the story, showing how drastic the change to their relationship has been and how they view honor, with both ending on a very bittersweet note.

The game is also remarkably dark and that is displayed through the Mongols. Their leader is easily hateable and performs truly despicable acts in order gain the upper hand in the war. It was a joy to see what happens to him by the game's end and will satisfy players who loathe him. His underlings also do some horrific things to the island's inhabitants. You will regularly see many corpses courtesy of the invaders, who butcher others like animals. They also force villagers to work for them if they wish to live and will take hostages at outposts across the island. They are usually responsible for the deaths, mutilation, (implied) rape, child abuse and killings, torture of many of Tsushima's inhabitants. Their atrocities are on full display here and it cements them as terrifying force that must be annihilated.

The game's side quests also show how bleak the game's tone is. Not all of them will result in happy endings for the quest givers and usually result in innocents being slain, with their loved one having to cope with their passing. One of the only times I laughed during gameplay was during a quest given by Kenji, a character who lies to you in order for you to help him get out of the problems he usually creates. Even he is sad at the passing of a character during the second act. This game is brutal and serious with what it shows and it is wholly unapologetic for it.

Gameplay is divided into two types: normal combat and stealth. Normal combat has you slashing Mongols with a katana while blocking and dodging any incoming attacks. Stealth sees you creeping about and hiding in tall grass and on rooftops, killing Mongols when they aren't looking. Both gameplay styles allow you to use Ghost tools such as kunai and bombs to turn the tide of battle in your favor. You also have windchimes to lure enemies away while in stealth and two different types of bows to use for long range kills.

Your abilities can be upgraded by increasing your legend, which will reward you technique points when your legend meter is filled to a certain point. Filling this meter completely will reset it and allow you to learn one of the aforementioned Ghost weapon techniques. Technique points help you learn skills for combat, stealth and in finding collectibles across the island. These collectibles include fox shrines, bamboo strikes, hot springs, haikus, etc. Further improvements can be done by acquiring and upgrading your armor and weapons. Equipping different armors gives you different benefits like increased health, enemies not hearing you run, enemies taking longer to detect you, etc. Improving armors can improve these benefits and is done by collecting resources like linen, steel, iron, silk. etc. alongside resources (money). The same can be said for upgrading weapons. Upgrading your tanto lets you assassinate Mongols faster, upgrading your katana lets you do more damage with it and upgrading both bows improves their reload speed, stability, etc. You can also improve your ammo pouches for weapons by killing predator animals and taking their hides.

In the end, this game is mostly great to play, though it is mired by its collectibles which are not exciting or fun to collect.

    - the side quests are as good as the main quest.
    - Again: the setting is beyond engrossing, and again, probably one of the most gorgeous in all of gaming. The graphics really just can't be beat.

    Cons:
    - The game goes on longer than it needs to: by the endgame, you understand how to beat all the different types of enemies they throw at you. Beating them becomes more muscle memory than anything.
    - Aside from the main quest and the character-based side quests, a lot of the leveling is just done through rinse-and-repeat collectible hunting or base-captures that only end, again, once you do rinse-and-repeat collectible finding.
    - Most boss fights become formulaic once you figure out how to beat the boss. Normally it's a lot of waiting, then hitting the right button at the right time, then more waiting, then repeating the process.

But for the drag that is the endgame, this would be a 10/10 for me. The fun just stops so wholly that it felt like a bore by the time you finish, but-for one big twist/fight. That twist & fight alone redeems a lot of the endgame, but some of it can't be saved.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got this game on release and played it faithfully for many hours, but then I got kind of bored with it and didn't play again for a couple months. I ended up just getting more wrapped up in other games, which is never a good sign. I wanted to beat the story so I forced myself to sit down and beat the game in its entirety so I finally went ahead and did that.

Overall, the game has a great atmosphere, satisfying and simple combat system (that has some depth) a beautifully unique art design, and a faithful Japanese spirit throughout. I quite enjoy the fact that you can unlock most everything in the game without microtransactions or DLCs and the storyline itself is quite good although it's nothing absolutely compelling. The ending definitely pulled on my heat strings and that first scene of Jin as the Ghost (when you poison the Mongols) got me fired up. Once you master the combat system, you'll really FEEL like a samurai and that sort of power fantasy in games like this are important. There's a lot to like here, but the game isn't perfect. I think there's WAY too many people on here blindly screaming "10/10 perfect!" because it's not a perfect game by any means, unless maybe you haven't played an open world action RPG in the last 5 years. If you have, a lot of things here are going to look familiar.

The cons aren't plentiful, but they're impactful. This game's stealth mechanics feels almost exactly identical to Shadow of Mordor/Assassin's Creed Origins/Odyssey. These games are generally criticized for feeling repetitive and having boring side quests and I unfortunately got that feeling from time to time with Tsushima. After I mastered the combat system, and reached a point where I almost never got injured during combat sequences, it was no longer exciting to take down Mongol camps anymore. The first 5 or 10 times? Yeah, it was cool. But you end up doing these things so much that it starts to have that Far Cry 5 affect of endlessly clearing outpost after outpost. Which to be fair, a lot of modern games rely on "outpost liberation" style gameplay, it's nothing bad inherently, but that's my point. If you've played AC Origins, or Shadow of War, or any of these other titles, you're not going to be excited to be doing it here again and again. In fact, once you beat the game and side quests, what does it tell you to do? Clear MORE outposts. After stealth killing a Mongol for the 1000th time, or Heavy Arrowing a guard off a tower for the 1000th time, or getting into a battle with a random group of 5 Mongols and parrying their strikes and murdering them with cold efficiency for the 1000th time, I just felt bored. Does that mean I never had fun? No. But what it means is this game lacks depth. Behind the layer of beautiful mosaic scenery, and epic tales of The Ghost fighting back the Mongol invaders, what we have here is a pretty basic stealth system, and an above average combat system with a largely empty Open World. That's the game.

Yes the map is big, and it's pretty, and there's lots of side quests and collectibles, but that's actually it. Outside of main quests, you have 5 duels, a bunch of fetch quests, a bunch of "Go to this abandoned fishing village and kill these 6 bandits that stand zero chance against you", and about 1000 different collectibles thrown all over the places. While the hot springs, and bamboo strikes are pretty cool, there's nothing else to immerse you in the world. You can't share sake with a friend, or go to a tavern, or play any minigames like Go or Shogi, you can't really INTERACT with anybody outside of the main quests. There's no blade maintenance, no caring for your horse, building relationships, making decisions, etc. Beneath the layers of story telling and visuals, this game is essentially played on rails but it tricks you into thinking it's not. What agency and choice do you really have here? Whether you'll knock out a few side quests before continuing the main quest, or not. That's it. This game, very easily, could have been more linear like The Last of Us 2 and it probably would have been better for it. I guess that's more of a problem with the gaming industry than this game specifically. Studios seem to think everything has to be some massive open world setting, but a lot of times that setting can drag a game down rather than lift it up. I think it dragged Ghost of Tsushima down. Constantly riding through endless empty fields really messes with the pacing and by the final stretch of this game, it felt like I was trudging through the mud just trying to finish the story.

Example: Every boss has the same fighting mechanic, except Khotun Khan (the final boss). After you parry them, you can attack them twice, if you go for the 3rd strike, they will dodge and counter or deliver a deadly attack. For the Mongols (minions), they only have around 9-10 role with different fighting mechanics. So, the combat will become very repetitive and compare to Sekiro, the combat is lacking of variation and challenges. Another addition to that, you have many ninja tools at your disposal which makes the character way too OP in my opinion.

    2. Story: Not appealing. Finish it today and not having a memorable moments with it. On the opposite, the side-story is quite good. I'm more invested in the Tales of Ishikawa and Masako. Will need more work on the narrative side (Learn from your brother, Naughty Dog).

    3. Platforming: Completely BAD. You need to play camera for moving to another rock when climbing and the camera can affect how far you jump from one another (for left or right cases only). The "Crawl Under" seems buggy as sometimes I'm getting trapped inside. The funny thing is, If I move backward when crawling under, I can get out easily which doesn't make any sense. Something also doesn't feel right with the ladder as sometimes I can't get it work so I need to run near the ladder to be able to descend or jump to ascend.

    4. Side Quests: Boring. I did it only for trophy and for reaching the title of "Ghost of Tsushima". Almost all of them need to be tackle in the same way. Tracking, Running, Killing and Done. Don't get me wrong but helping hostage in the middle of the road still way better than doing all those side quests.

    5. Legends: Has it been dead already? I cannot get another player while matchmaking. It seems gonna be a lot of fun thou but I never able to play with another player as the system keep finding players for me.

    6. Difficulty: WEAK. Play it on hard mode and didn't feel any challenge at all. Change it to lethal and still there's no major difference. The only differences are the enemy's attack are more punishing (2 hit only) and enemy less likely to idly waiting for you to kill his friend, so they tend to charge towards you together. But, back to the combat system, it still no challenge at all as I was expecting a new fighting mechanic instead of giving a buff to the enemy.

Well, seems many but all the lacking points still doesn't match many positive traits in the game.

Conclusion: This game is absolutely amazing and I think this game will be well accepted to players who like stealth game, open-world, exploration and of course Japan in general.

I didn't recommend this game if you like story-driven or narrative game and Sekiro player that have high expectation of GoT combat system.

To say this game is great is definitely accurate, the sword play is on point, the story as well and the controls, the only draw back is that the camera should have been better that is the only draw back, so 9.5 from me.

Really enjoyed my time playing, currently finishing up extras. The combat flows good, like the Batman Arkham series but with bladed weapons. The time period is very interesting, which adds to the feeling of being the unstoppable “ghost”. I decided to wait until next gen to play, but I definitely should’ve played this game sooner.

I didnt like the game, gameplay was repetitive, graphics where dull and story was cliche. Missions were the same all over the game and skills didnt make an impact.
Maybe my problem was that I played this game right after Sekiro and Sekiro is much great than this one. But Ghost of Tsushima is, for me a very big mistake.

The only major issue at launch was the number of graphical glitches and bugs (jumping into buildings or rocks landed me stuck or falling through the world, very often.)

Overall, the game succeeds in making you feel the dynamic of the Samurai and the Ghost. Highly recommend.

Visually, the game was not as impressive as it looked to me in the trailers. It does not have bad graphics, it is quite a pretty looking game but it has actually a better artistic design than the actual graphic design, which we experience in the final product.

The game has a very nice Japanese atmosphere and colourful landscapes and fields full of dancing flowers to ride through. But, where the game disappoints are animations. Lip syncing is not that brilliant and horse movements and walking/running animations do not really look good. The world tries to be pretty and exciting and it certainly is for the most part but at the same time it feels deserted and dead with some very similar occasional small events and quests that you can run into. I know, I said it too many times but Red Dead Redemption II showed a very nice and creative way to make a lively world full of interesting side events that almost never get old. In this sense, Ghost of Tsushima is far from that.

One of many great things about this game are loading times. The game loads very, very fast. Fast travel is done in only a few seconds. Another nice thing is navigation through the open world. Once you mark your destination on the map you can close the map and while riding a horse you will notice the wind blow in the grass or between the trees that actually points in the direction of your destination. If you are lost you can use the touchpad to make the wind start blowing again. A really nice little thing.

All in all, I did expect more but I have to say that Ghost of Tsushima is fun to play and observing it as a whole thing - it is a fine game. It puts you in the shoes of a samurai on his quest to reclaim his homeland from invaders. The game has RPG elements, a skill tree, and plenty of different movements and skills to master and use in countless combats and duels across the land of Tshushima.

The story itself is nothing special. Another quest of revenge we all saw far too many times, unfortunately. Still, I enjoyed playing.

Good: Main Story, Great companion quests, Gameplay easy to divide into short gaming sessions.
Bad: Boring and repetitive side activities with lots of riding on a horse and clearing out enemy camps.

Main and Side stories: The main story is engaging. It is a fight you have to take to free the people of Tsushima but your hero will have to sacrifice everything he belives in to do so. But as you fight your way through ranks of enemies you will find allies whom will help you. They have stories on their own and I wish some RPG games like Pillars of Eternity had such amazing companion stories as this game. Each of them has a chain of quests that can't be done right away but are progressing with the main story. Each quest is short and gives you ust a bit of the story and conclusion of all of the quest chains is emotional and worth seeing.
Gameplay: The swordfight feels satisfying and "right". Each skill point gives you additional abilities and you have that pleasant feeling of progression. Of course stelthy approach is built as in any other AAA game so your opponents are blind and unable to look up. Everything else is just industry standard at this point.
Open World: This one is tricky. The best thing about this world was that every quest, doesn't matter if it is a main, side quest or just a simple activity is very short. It was super easy for me to play this game for a half an hour and feel that I did something. I didn't feel forced to sit longer but I always wanted too because I always could stop after just one more short quest. The bad part is: the open world was mostly riding a horse. You ride 2 minutes through the map, gather one item or slash through a bamboo stand, and you go off again. Or slay through an enemy camp. The quest were interesting but every other activity was boring. For the most part of the game I felt like uncovering the map pixel by pixel.
Visuals and Music: The game is mesmerizing. Views are amazing. Swaying grass, falling leaves and wind everywhere around you. Music is simply stunning. It always fits the situation and touches some strings of your feelings or enhances the scene. It is one that I added to my playlist to listen during work.

The game world is simply beautiful. There are a few rough edges but nothing that stands out as particularly bad. This is the only game I have ever got a platinum trophy for. That is because the world is so gorgeous I didn't mind wandering around after endgame to tie up all the loose ends and grabbing all the cosmetics. The minimal UI is fantastic and allows the game world to shine without objective markers and such clogging up the screen.
Some critical reviews marked it down for lacking in originality but I don't care. A game doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be great. Yes GOT obviously draws a lot of inspiration from games that have come before such as Horizon and God of War but that isn't a bad thing.
The main questline, voice acting and writing were again fantastic. Every time I stopped playing I couldn't wait to get back in and progress the story to see what happened next.

The story was appealing I kept wanting to find out more about the work I was in, all the characters were very likable their story’s were fun to play through and the main villain wasn’t all that great you hardly saw much of him but the love hate relationship you will have with your uncle is great and l love how the story ending with a duel and you chose to either let him live or let him die Expand

Bought the game two months ago, - Really beautiful game it's like a mix of painting and photography,
    - Many customization options if you want to roleplay as a ronin, samurai, or ninja
    - Many relatable/likeable characters - Plenty of badass main missions
    - Great story
    - Fluid gameplay

This is basically more an assassin's creed game than assassin's creed valhalla is. The story is very good, the side missions are very good and the fighting mechanics are SUPER! There are not alot of games which have a great story line but also has a great multiplayer. This is one of those games. Must buy!

Epic game. Combat & story are good, & the graphics are the best I've seen on PS4.
I still probably prefer the combat & bosses on Sekiro but that is one of my faves of all time.
Spewing I didn't know the director's cut was coming out before playing it, because I'm not going back now.

The Samurai style of game that combines assassin's creed and witcher, meaningful plots and side-quests, stunning graphics and background music, well-designed moves action, really make the game stands out in the year of 2020, the best game so far in 2020.

Oh, this is a masterpiece. This is what an open world adventure should look like. Beats Assassin’s Creed in every single way: graphics, storytelling, combat system, world design, you name it.

I just love it, finally we can play this 60 fps on PS5 and it's stunning.

The best samurai game in a long time and a great fun for all, who love action. Love for Japan and its history is a big plus, but its knowledge is not necessary to enjoy every minute of this beautiful game. [Issue#305]

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
