Looks aren't everything, but they do help paint over the cracks. Ghost of Tsushima has no right to look as beautiful as it does, it's a video game after all, but it does, and it is visually spectacular. Couple this with fun and diverse combat and Ghost of Tsushima is a must play, so much so that this is the first game that I decided to get the platinum trophy for in nearly 5 years. VisualsLooks aren't everything, but they do help paint over the cracks. Visuals and Sound (9/10), Gameplay (8/10), Story (9/10)

Visuals and Sound (9/10) From the very first scene, riding your horse into battle, you can see how beautiful this world is and that Sucker Punch has put a ridiculous amount of effort in to make it so. It was a a little odd at first to see literally everything moving on screen, because it's just not something I've seen in a video game before, you might get some moving grass or a swaying tree but that's about it. In GoT it's every blade of grass, every flower, every leaf (and there are lots of leaves) that move whenever there is a gust of wind. Now that I've seen it, there's no excuse for other developers. When you're standing atop a mountain after just traversing a cleverly designed shrine puzzle, and you pan the camera you can see snow capped mountains in the distance, the yellow leaves of the Golden Temple, and the fields of rolling grass. it is amazing. But then you see the water close up and the illusion is broken, and you start to notice everything else that's not quite as good as it should be. You notice the guiding bird getting stuck on a tree, you notice that you can't see when you try to fight a Mongol in their tent, you notice the horse that's conveniently placed itself between you and the camera in a standoff and you notice it when the whole last area is just snow.
Sound is also done really well, it never really strays from being an ambient noise that you would expect to hear when in nature. Chirping birds, squealing deer, distant fights all help to create a world that feels lived in. I played with Japanese audio and English subtitles (because Zoro, and it's Japan) and there were a few times where the subtitles didn't match to the Japanese that i could understand, but that might just be a dialect thing and it isn't really game defining. I did switch to English after I'd finished to see what it sounded like, and it was just weird. I recommend Japanese with English subtitles.

Gameplay (8/10) It's an open world game, and it does everything you'd expect an open world game to do. Clear out enemy territories, scale tall areas, find hidden items, and go on all too samey side quests. It's nothing new, and GoT doesn't do anything revolutionary with the gameplay. Combat is fun. You get an absolutely awesome feeling when you pull off multiple perfect parries in a row and the Mongols that are watching fall over and run away. You have multiple stances to choose from depending on which enemy you are fighting at any particular time, and changing between the stances is super fluid and feels natural. The duels, where I think this game particularly excels in the combat are engaging, challenging, and fun, but there aren't enough of them. I played on Medium for the first Act because it was too easy, and switched to Lethal in Act 2. Somehow switching to lethal made the game easier, i died a few more times, but when you parry well you will almost always get a kill, and parrying isn't difficult.

Story (9/10) The story isn't groundbreaking, but the way it is developed through the environments in the Island of Tsushima is what makes this story engaging. The constantly moving wind and environment really helped to build the mythos of the divine wind (Kamikaze) that protected Japanese shores from the Mongol invasions, and throughout the story you felt like you were becoming this legend.

I can't wait for the upcoming DLC, and hopefully a sequel in the years to come.

I want to start by saying that this game does many things well. The environmental graphics are beautiful. Sometimes I found myself looking at how the sun penetrates the misty air. Sometimes I found myself looking at how the sun penetrates the misty air. The combat is quite fun with this intense Japanese battle music pushing you further. Some action sequences were so intense and vibrant I couldn't stop saying "wow". And the premise is pretty interesting, watching an honorable samurais' descent into dishonor. But all of this is drowned out by its severe repetitiveness. The story is predictable and unoriginal, the combat is so repetitive it gets so boring, the open world aspect of it is unnecessary and simple, the side quests are just the same thing repeated over and over, and the dialogue looks like two robots are talking to each other. There are more mistakes than this but I think these are the most important. Let me explain.
    1. The story
The story has a good premise but it does it in the most unoriginal way. They don't get you invested in most of the characters, for example Norio. I hated Norio, he just complained and complained, and the voice is the most annoying thing, and when I finished his emotional side quests I breathed a sigh of relief because I didn't want to be with him anymore.
    2. The Combat
This is one of the best parts of the game, there are some times when I was laughing it was so much fun, the music is pushing you forward to do these awesome combos. But it repeats. Again. And again. And again. The stealth gets so boring and the unstealth combat is just the same. They introduce new weapons and skills, but you use them a couple of times then it gets stale again. After 30 hours you wish it had more to add, but you only get one new weapon every time you max out your honor, then after 5 times of maxing out, you get nothing.
    3. Open World
This is the worst part of this game. It has no reason to be open world. There are only 9 types of discoverable locations in the giant island. There is no reason to exploring when there are only 9 things. Every time I think im going to find something cool its always a fox den, or a haiku. Another thing, usually in other open world games everything is interactive, you can do what you want to the npc's, you can find so many types of locations, so many different missions, different weapons that do different things. In this game is you explode a bomb in a crowd of people they will fall around and scream for a little and then go back to what they were doing like nothing happened. You only get 4 main weapons. 4. compare to wild hunt, gta v, red dead 2, where you have hundreds of weapons to choose from. The random encounters are boring and make exploring a pain. There are only a couple types of resources to collect while exploring while in other games like rdr2, you can collect anything and in the witches 3 with hundreds of ingredients. Everything is simplified to the simplest form which disappoints me.
    4. Side quests
the side quests are boring and uninspired, they are so similar and provide you with little reward for going out of your way to do them.
    5. Dialogue
This reminds me of horizon zero dawn where the dialogue was so stiff and robotic it made me want to kill myself. The main character, Jin, talks in one tone and doesn't really laugh or do anything a likable character does. In games like this its good to have a character that you can at least relate to in even the tiniest way, but Jin is a legend who has everything given to him and never smiles. I am being a bit aggressive and overreacting, but it is still a problem.

Those are the main problems but there are more. This isn't a bad game, it just isn't anything special. I still enjoyed my time playing and had so much fun in some parts, but there were many times where I had no fun at all.

Also the combat it also great and rewarding in my opinion. But this games weakest part is the story in my opinion it was to basic it was pretty much just like this rescue your uncle than get his castle back than kill khan. But some of the story was great it had its high points and low points but the best thing is the characters interactions and how much they changed from the beginning to the end. But overall I had a fantastic time with the game and even got the platinum trophy for it. So I highly recommend it. Expand

Ghost Of Tsushima is a respectful bow to Japan's flourishing, diverse culture and even though they took some liberties in regards to historical accuracy, it's all coming together in a fitting and immersive, bombastic experience of the Mongolian invasion during the kamakura period on Tsushima island. This is the samurai/ronin/ninja experience we've all been waiting for. The characters are all voiced well both in English and in Japanese, and well fleshed out. I can understand complaints that they're all (with only one notable exception) very serious & dour. Personally, I can forgive that because the circumstances surrounding each character are such that being serious & dour makes sense. Pacing is excellent - the game never leaves you with a feeling of aimlessness or without something to do. The combat & exploration are where the game really shines, though.

Combat is a nice balance between defending & attacking while still being friendly enough that the game remains accessible to players of all skill-levels. There's a certain chaotic element as well that would likely make a dedicated lock-on button a boon, but I think is better for the lack of it, oddly. More impressively is that combat is equally enjoyable & rewarding between open & stealth (& the standoff mechanic is crazy-fun).

The world is populated enough with random points of interest & side-quests that going off the beaten path is almost always a worthwhile endeavor. Even when it doesn't bear any fruit, the game is visually stunning enough that I struggle to consider such rare instances to truly be a waste. The seamless & unique integration of the UI adds some panache to an otherwise tired formula. There's no need for a map or opening/closing menus to figure out where nearby points of interest or quest objectives are; you quite literally follow the wind... or a bird, or fox, or the torii gates.

For as amazing as the game is, it does have a few faults; however minor. There are some minor glitches with enemies dropping underground or through walls when they die and the like; but nothing that impacts play. The seamless integration, as nice as it is, makes it easy to want to 100% it on the first run (a very good thing) but without a new game+ or other features exclusive to the 2nd+ playthrough, it does hurt replay value. As already stated, the story (especially the ending) is rather predictable - while it's executed well enough that this is a minor complaint at worst, something to shake things up at the end would've been welcome. Nonetheless, after nearly 32 years of being a fairly serious gamer, Ghost of Tsushima has managed to make it into my top 10 of all time.

But it wouldn't have had its special touch if it weren't also a game, which molds its narrative in fluid ways, influencing the way you experience and think things through. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

Here's the deal. Ghost of Tsushima has some weird glitches. It has some really repetitive missions. It needs even more vanity items. It needs at least 14 more blades of Kojiro and 20 more mythic quests. The stealth could be vastly improved and the platforming can be a little wonky. All of that said, the game is extremely fun and gobsmackingly gorgeous. I'd recommend this game to practically everyone who values joy.

What an awesome unexpected gem of a game. The story kept me engaged and the combat kept evolving so it never felt boring or repetitive. I highly recommend to anyone who likes Japanese culture or open world games. Even if you aren’t into either necessarily, I still think you might be surprised at how much you enjoy this game.

This is by far the most beautiful looking game of this generation. In regards to world design, this game is unparalleled. I’ll review 3 elements of the game that stood out to me.

    1.) Story- In all honesty, the story of GOT is best described as simple, yet effective. The story is more grounded/ simple than I would’ve expected or wanted. However, what makes the story stand out are 3 things;
This is by far the most beautiful looking game of this generation. In regards to world design, this game is unparalleled. I’ll review 3 elements of the game that stood out to me.

1.) Story- In all honesty, the story of GOT is best described as simple, yet effective. The story is more grounded/ simple than I would’ve expected or wanted. However, what makes the story stand out are 3 things; characters, dialogue, world building. These are the fundamentals to this story. Characters show real emotion with internal conflicts. Dialogue is exceptionally portrayed(at least in Japanese). And the world design brings this game to life with grand levels of immersion. While the story is solid, there are parts that lower the score. Most notably are the parts in the story that feel rushed. There are times when characters go through great conflict, and they seem to overcome this conflict in a rushed way. There is definitely a minor pacing issue here. Overall, the story is solid and stands as a great portrayal of Japanese intrigue. Verdict: Amazing

2.) Gameplay- This is where the game outshines most in this genre. Combat was clearly the focus of this game. Not only is combat fluid and realistic, but your are also granted so much variety in how you deal with enemies. You have the choice to go running in with your katana or take a more quiet approach with your ghost weapons. You are given a large skill tree with meaningful upgrades to Jins’ arsenal. From different move sets to different weapons, combat never feels boring, but rather excels from the previous upgrade. You can tell that Sucker Punch really did their homework on samurais in the past and how they fought. This game really brings to life the great Samurai way of fighting. The only problem with the combat has to be the most noticeable of problems and that is the lack of a designated lock on feature. There are times when you will miss a target or accidentally hit the wrong target because you aren't able to lock on to your target. It’s small, but noticeable. All in all, the combat excels in comparison to most games’ combat. Verdict: Masterpiece

3.) Technical- First and foremost, GOT is the most beautiful game I’ve played on the PS4, as well as one of the most beautiful games of this generation. Not only is the foliage/landscapes beautiful, but there is so much variety in the terrain. From green grass to beautiful yellow grass to snowy mountains, the game constantly surprises you with its graphics. In regards to music, it’s honestly a beautiful representation of Japanese music. It’s not insane, but it’s just enough to get immersed in of course. As bugs and hics go, this game can have some issues like floating carriages or Jin floating over a ledge. The point is that nothing is game breaking but it can get a little annoying. Verdict: Masterpiece

It's easily the best and most captivating game of 2020. There's so much love for detail, I found myself several times just looking fascinated at what was before me.
You have a open world game without quest markers, without mini maps, without the typical open world clutter we are used to.

Sucker Punch came in clutch once again, as they always seem to do. There was one bad Sly game, and it's the one they didn't make. This game takes the Assassin's Creed formula, gives it a cool setting that hasn't been done in that series, and gives you a reasonable amount of things to do. I think one of my favorite parts of the game was how they put a good amount of content into it, but didn't make the world feel barren or cluttered. That balance is almost always flawed in similar games, but I felt like this one really made sure to space things out in such a way that you weren't wandering aimlessly through the world looking for something to do, but you weren't stuck looking for 100 feathers and other useless collectibles, either. Almost everything presented to you as a player is designed to help you get stronger by playing the game and exploring. You feel much better by the end of the game than you were in the beginning, and with different play styles, why you are stronger by the end is somewhat up to player choice. I could go on about this game forever, but it's 2 in the morning. Please play it if you haven't already. This is my pick for GotY 2020, and with how positive the reviews for it look, I think many agree. Expand

It's a great new game from Sucker Punch. It's not perfect from technical side (some collision bugs, some kind of npc lags or AI weak sides), but this game still shows us, how great can be game, if you will add different specific and aesthetic details. They're everywhere - from wind that points on the quest target to sword hiding animation.

On the one hand you have a by the numbers open world game that straight up copies and pastes with no exaggeration every single open world game mechanic popularized by Ubisoft that you have played about a million times before and on the other hand you have a game with so much attention to detail , really enjoyable combat , a solid story and zero bad business practices

To put it simply this is like I mentioned before yet another open world game . Prepare to travel endless amount of barren land with your horse to go from point A to point B which will inevitably butcher your controller , Find collectibles and challenges that litter the map , clear numerous identical bases to liberate Tsushima , earn skills points to spend them on your skill tree etc. Thankfully there aren't any climb tower to reveal the map challenges . Exclusive to Ghost of Tsushima are the bamboo strikes which are fun to do if not a bit annoying to find , the countless Fox Den's that litter the map and are extremely repetitive , the Haiku's where you make poems which ...OK I guess and last but not least the Hot Springs which give you a bit of health . The good thing about all these generic activities is that they are optional and I barely did any of them ...And that's perhaps the biggest plus of Ghost of Tsushima compared to your typical Ubisoft game

Unlike for example Assassin's Creed Odyssey Ghost of Tsushima is not build with XP packs and microtransactions in mind thus there are no spongy enemies nor level based enemies/quests . If you are skillful and you do the bare minimum of side quests that have consistently good quality you will be more than ready to face everything the game throws at you . I can't stress how delighted I was with this feature . In addition because of the lack of sponge enemies with endless health the combat is incredibly enjoyable as it's based more around good parrying and dodging rather than using overpowered weapons or cheesing the game . In a lot of ways this game from a gameplay perspective reminds me of Assassin's Creed Unity because they share many of the same ideas . Incredibly similar combat , similar progression , identical stealth dodgy AI and all , cool gadgets and armor that gives you different perks depending on how you play . The only big difference would be the fact that Ghost of Tsushima has boss fights that are absolutely awesome and really challenging

As far as the story and character are concerned they are solid . Nothing spectacular thanks to some poor pacing large in part due to it's open world format but it manages to be memorable nonetheless thanks to some incredible set pieces and of course it's really interesting setting . Historical accuracy isn't something I can comment on but I wouldn't be surprised if some things were toned down to match today's sensibilities ..

Ghost of Tsushima is the best Ubisoft like game you will find on the market . It's a game made with a lot of passion and it shows unlike the microtransaction filled woke garbage the latter **** out in the market every year . That being said if you are tired of the Ubisoft format the game will undoubtedly tire you at times ....

The facial expressions are well done, you can even see blood, sweat and tears running down their faces. Clothes get wet when they come into contact with water, they get dirty when running on mud and you leave traces on the ground.

Graphically, it's very good. It is beautiful, colorful and dynamic. The views are breathtaking and there's lots of variety in locations you visit.

The game also has very short loading times. You can fast travel in just a few seconds. There is a lot of movement on the screen all the time, but there are no animation drops and objects don't pop out in front of your eyes like in Assassin's Creed for example.

The soundtrack is a masterpiece and the sound effects are realistic. The game also features 3D audio.

The gameplay is similar to the latest Assassin's Creed, but better designed and polished. You won't find copy-paste missions and fetch quests here. Each of them has something interesting and original about it. The enemies are reasonably positioned, they don't just stand still, they walk around and patrol the area, looking left and right, or they might be just busy with something.

The game has a good combat system with various stances for different enemy types. There's even a "Ghost" stance that rewards the player for flawless executions. You get the basic block, roll and parry buttons, special attacks that consume resolve, which you can regain by killing enemies. There's also bows, kunai and bombs. Everything can be upgraded. The fights are quite precise, with timed attacks and parries and don't just revolve around simple button-mashing.

The only cons I can think of is the stealth system. I can see how satisfying it can be to butcher your enemies from behind or snipe them with your bow from a distance, while hiding in tall grass. It can be a fun way of eliminating large groups of enemies, but at the same time it takes away the challenge from the game, trivializing other ways of combat. The enemies take too much time to notice you and can quickly forget about your presence once you hide somewhere behind a wall or a rock. It's just too simple.

Let’s start with the good. The combat in this game is really satisfying, my only issue was that the hardest difficulty was way easier than the difficulty right below it. So I played the game on Lethal because I usually feel like that is the way the game was intended to be played but damn it’s too easy. All the enemies die after a maximum of two hits or sometimes one hit if they are in a staggered state.
The duels on the other hand where perfect on lethal, having to dodge and block at the last possible moment to be able to survive felt amazing even though some attack animations where a little cheap to catch you off even when you where dodging but after dying a couple of times these issues just became a learning curve.
The story felt like a true samurai story with characters that felt true and relatable. My only issue with the story was that it was way too long. After getting to Act III I was already checked out and just wanted to get to the end. The voice acting wasn’t anything special but it was good enough.
My recommendation to anyone interested in playing this game is to skip all the side quests that don’t involve your companions since these mostly feel like filler and to not bother that much with searching for shrines, hot springs and haikus since these mostly just fill time and doesn’t really give you that much of an advantage.

    *SPOILERS AHEAD*
Let’s talk more in depth about the story. The main villain, Khotun Khan was great. He felt like a real threat in every scene he was in. Until the last battle with him where you killed him without any real issue. This felt like an oversight and made it feel a little rushed to get to the end with the battle between Lord Shimura and Jin in the end.
The choice in the end where you get to choose if Jin honours his Uncle’s wish to die a warriors death or spare him also felt very arbitrary and in my opinion Jin would obviously spare his father-figure since he loved him through the whole journey.

Definitely a good game, maybe not a masterpiece but it’s well worth your time for the gameplay if nothing else.

One of the best games I’ve played in a long time. Don’t think someone is paying me to say this or what not but honestly I really like this game. So many missions to do to put more time into the game I try to finish the side quest first before doing the missions to feel accomplished. 10/10 for me.

I'm loving this game so far. From the environment/scenery to the combat. Just beautiful and fluent. A game so good, that the minor glitches I've encountered didn't bother me at all. And the side stories and stuff to do besides the main story are even enjoyable. Definitely a must buy. And free co-op dlc coming soon? Sucker Punch, you are amazing for this one. This one the best game I have played on PS4. Even though I’m not done with story this game has so much context in it, it deserves a 10/10.

Suckerpunch have come a long way since infamous. I did not think they had it in them and now they've proved many wrong. I love Sakai's character and the story. Combat feels smooth and those cinematics jeez someone hold my hand. Game of the year let's go!

I had high expectations that this would be another horizon zero dawn for Sony and my expectations have been surpassed. This is one of my favourite games ever made. Is it technically perfect, no (slight clipping of feet here and there) but the story and gameplay are up there with the best. I highly recommend this game. If you don’t own a PS4, this would be worth buying one for.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first time I have come into contact with the work of suckerpunch. This work was created by a Western company based on the motive of another country, but it is surprisingly well understood and well described. Due to the characteristics of the subject matter of this work, it inevitably contains beautification of samurai, but I personally don't think it's a big problem because it also clearly describes the part of alternative history, or rather degrades it. As for the action, it's perfectly designed. I think it is a very good judgment that Parry created a special attack by enemies that cannot be prevented in several stages so that it is not a universal measure. It's a big disappointment that there's no additional content or newgame+, but it's a great masterpiece that ended the twilight of PS4. Expand

The best samurai game in a long time and a great fun for all, who love action. Love for Japan and its history is a big plus, but its knowledge is not necessary to enjoy every minute of this beautiful game. [Issue#305]

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
