Just finished this incredible game. I went the completionist route with all the side and legendary quests. I may have over-inundated myself with missions. Because I got maybe a little anxious for the game to end so I can start something new.

To put it frank - this game is GORGEOUS, riding your horse throughout the countryside is a treat all in itself, it's just gorgeous I can't

To put it frank - this game is GORGEOUS, riding your horse throughout the countryside is a treat all in itself, it's just gorgeous I can't reiterate that enough. I've never seen anything like it. In terms of open world, the formula stays the same as many others in the genre (think Days Gone vs RDR2).

The story is relatively straight forward. Drive the Mongols out. The side quests are more exciting and mysterious then the main story line. Jin Sakai is a pretty cool main character, but I found myself wanting more substance from him.

    CONS:
    - not enough unique equipment or armor options
    - main quest was very black and white. Kill bad guy, save land. I mean... okay all games are technically like that, but they fluff it up. GOT does not fluff it up.

Just played it recently and all I can say is that this game is a masterpiece with great visuals, story, acting, and just being overall too damn easy to be distracted with many side activities. It's a good game. It is not every year that we have the opportunity to be in the shoes of a samurai. However, it is a game that could have been better done. When the characters go to talk, they look just like wax dolls without reaction. They don't even have gesticulations. I think I should have stayed a little longer in the oven to improve certain points of the game.

Moving on to the actual game. I'll start with combat. It starts off pretty great as you learn and get used to the basic controls and to me is so cool. You genuinely feel finesse and satisfaction as you fight battle enemies breaking there gued and then as you finish them you will have an almost set animation where he trips the enemy up after stabbing them, oh slices there chest as you stay in the pose just to make it more baddass . You fight many enemies at a time at points and there is lots of variety. As you progress through the story or explore the world you will comes across different types of enemies who can make you want to take a different approach in killing them. You could shoot at range with a bow, fight head first or stealth kill them. When fighting multiple people you can very seamlessly switch between opponets to parey ther attacks as they attack you at once, parrying leaves the enemy open for a combo and if you get attacked mid combo you can parry the other opponent where you can either continue your combo agaisnt them or finish the original opponent Expand

The graphics are simply breathtaking and the setting possibly the most beautiful ever, snapshots of the screen are better than any photo I've taken in real life. Combat is fast-paced and challenging, at least in the beginning, and who doesn't love the samurai, their absolute courage and dedication?
Unfortunately I've spent a bit too much going around in search of fox dens, pillars of honor and sashimono banners, and now every mission feels the same. Combat is still fun, especially since I give up most artificial advantages. No assassinations, no blowgun, no armor. Much more fun played the samurai way. On the other hand, I've grown more and more bored with Jin, the protagonist, and the dialogues in the game. He's not a samurai, or at least he doesn't behave like one. He's a western idealized white knight that doesn't belong in medieval Japan, treating every servant, merchant, peasant or thief like a friend and an equal. I guess this decision was meant to let the player identify with him, but it's anachronistic. Also, there's unfortunately no secondary mission that goes beyond banality. Mongols kill a family, you find injured wife. Wife beseeches you to save abducted husband, just before dying. You save husband, he mourns wife. You meet frightened peasants: "We are from XYZ Village, the Mongols have killed everyone". You kill Mongols, free village, people return. You find disheartened wench: "Oh Lord Sakai, father was abducted by kappa!". You search for the killer "demons", obviously find bandits instead. You kill bandits, tell daughter to go to safe house, "Thank you Lord Sakai", bye bye. Really mundane stuff; while it's true that most games give you this kind of situation, dialogues here are almost cringeworthy in their linearity.
Moreover, there's an excessive female presence, as expected. The first character you encounter is Yuna, a female thief who walks around with a katana (wouldn't that be punishable by death?) and protects her weak brother. You soon meet Lady Adachi, a perfect female samurai who fears nothing and never falters, and is your companion in a side quest branch where you help her avenge her family. ALL RIGHT, I guess that female warriors are present in Japanese legends, so I can live with that, at least the game does not pretend they were fighting wars together with men. On the other hand, the male counterpart to Lady Adachi, a disgruntled master archer, is obviously an oaf and most definitely at fault for his (female) pupil's betrayal. Then you are following the tracks of a murderer and Jin goes: "THEY have gone this way". I honestly find it hard to believe that a 13th Century samurai would use the politically correct, non-gendered plural for ONE murderer. Finally, when a mission saw Lady Adachi and Jin track and kill a treacherous wife beater, it was really too much for me.

TL;DR - Supremely beautiful game that is fun to play but disrespectful to its setting. Boring dialogues, unlikely protagonist. Injects political correctness and western values into the samurai society, but is still less obnoxiously feminist than most titles nowadays.

Also noteworthy is the absence of the HUD, which helps to further immerse yourself. With the guiding-wind mechanic you don't even have to open the Map to find you’re next Objective.

The story is compelling and keeps you going for the most part. The side characters have nice little story arcs as well, which are optional.
Besides the main quest there are bandit camps to clear and loot. But with the fighting system, which took me some time to get used to, it’s fun and doesn’t get too repetitive.
Ghost of Tsushima doesn’t do anything groundbreaking but it’s so well made, with some cool new Ideas, that it stands out between all the other Open-World-Games.

Don't let people call it Assassin's Creed Japan. The combat is far deeper and more fun. The world isn't some generic Ubisoft world with markers everywhere. It is inventive and there aren't really any other games like this. People also don't seem to like the story and think Jin is boring and generic. The story is a great tale about a samurai rejecting the samurai code. At first it is a bit boring, but it gets better as it goes on. Playing the side quests to give context to the world also adds more to the story. Jin is a more silent strong and introverted character. He seems like he has a true Japanese samurai's personality. I think he is seem as boring by some because he is more silent than a Nathan Drake, Aloy, Ezio, or Geralt. I think if this series continues with him at the helm in ten years and after another game or two he will be seen in the same light as Kratos. He will be seen as strong and silent with an interesting past and an uncertain future. Playstation 4 has some great exclusives (Persona 5, The Last of Us, Nioh, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spiderman, Persona 5 Royal, Until Dawn, Uncharted 4, Days Gone, Blood Borne, and of course Ghost of Tsushima) this is some elite company, but Ghost is my favorite PS4 exclusive. It is just an amazing Samurai story that truely immerses me in futile Japan. Expand

I wasn't sure what to expect when I purchased this game two weeks ago. I was encouraged by reviews and decided to log in. I would like to start by saying I typically game 2-4 hours per week. This game is so good I have cleared twenty hours already.

As you will see in almost all other reviews, the game is beautiful, the user interface is refreshing, the gameplay it strong, and the open world is rich. But what I wanted to write a review for was the writing. This is the first game I have played in years where I actually cared about the NPCs. The writing for side quest characters is so good that I have been avoiding main story arc just to immerse myself more in the island and its people.

For example (this paragraph contains spoilers of a side quest, skip to next paragraph if you wish to continue reading without spoilers), after vanquishing a small city from the Mongols you hear from a local that his neighbor has been sneaking out at night. As you investigate it appears that this neighbor is stealing from the shrine. You follow him to a group of homes which appears is filled with bandits. As they discuss the most recent idol they found, they explain they are going to "bury it with the others" you follow them, and when you reach the burial ground, you realize they are burying these items to protect them from future Mongol invasions, in fact, they have been protecting peasants from Mongol raiders. As you bring them back to the city for fortified protection, the neighbor who reported this activity is at the gates shooing away peasants calling them thieves and bandits. Of course you step in and grant them entrance.

Honestly, when you play side missions as described in the paragraph above, it is deep and enthralling. Everyone you meet has their own motivations and intentions and they are played out beautifully. There are many serious characters and there are some funny ones along the way, like the drunken Sake merchant who literally had me laughing out loud at several of his quests arcs.

I love this game, I love the story, I love the side characters and NPCs, I love the visuals, and I love the combat, which punishes for not using mechanics and gives a true feeling of accomplishment when utilized to its potential.

If you love story driven games, this is honestly the best open world game for you.

Fun to play, rewarding combat, challenging and somehow a little nostalgic with square and triangle buttons for melee. One to be among the best games of this generation.

This game is just too good and with Sekiro winning the goty last year and raising the bar, this game raised it even more.

One of my favorites of this year, gorgeous to look at, surprisingly well-written story and fantastic combat. Good skills and gear to acquire, plenty of side quests and stories and a beautifully constructed map with plenty of biomes to explore.

This is a fantastic game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing. The world is vast and yet doesn't feel empty, perhaps helped by the stunning aesthetic created. A key element that really need applause is the combat. This is no button mashing game, and the combat is intelligent and requires thought, especially as you progress through the game and unlock abilities and other elements. My only gripe (and it is small and in no way takes away from a fantastic game) is that some of the additional tasks in the game (finding pillars etc) sometimes felt like a tick box exercise but again that is so minor. As someone who felt utterly punished by Sekiro (I had to sell it after a few hours play), this game delivers everything I wanted from a historical RPG in that world. Expand

Story: 7/10. It's rather "realistic", kind of has the feel of seeing an inaccurate history enterainment action movie. The characters are kinda weird and the dialogue often awkward. Although I like japanese culture or it might just be me, but this feels no better than the average japanese B movie. I couldn't really bring myself to care much about any character, because their backstories are told very superficially.

I actually agree with the 8.3 average critics review this time. The massive amount of 10/10s are very much over the top from my point of view. It's an enjoyable game that has no real weakness, but no game that doesn't innovate at all should ever get a 100% rating imo. Ghost of Tsushima really does the same old AC/Witcher formula with a Samurai era japanese setting. It does it really well, no doubt.
No GOTY material for me though. That currently goes to Hades for me on PC and FF7R on PS4 unless Cyberpunk 2077 holds up to the hype.

Ghost of Tsushima Lives up to these predecesores by telling a story that constantly kept me engaged and was truly striking when it came to the visuals which was highlighted in the photo mode- a mostly unnoted feature in most other games, but that displayed the sheer beauty and depth of the world Suckerpunch has created. The reason I didn't give the game a ten was due to primarily technical issues- many of which could easily be fixed via an update. the biggest issue being the camera making hard to see the enemy at times which a thing that you especially notice in a game like this which is contingent on seeing the enemy's moves and learning to use that against them.

For a dlc, which I think should really be considered by suckerpunch, I would love to see more story on Tomoe, or something with the nearby island of Iki as it seems to be a great way to do something a bit different and introduce the character to places they haven't been to. Along with this I and many would agree that mythic tales were undoubtedly a highlight of the game and so would love to see some more content regarding that.

overall this has been one of my favourite open world games and one of the best PS4 exclusives I have played in a while. I would love to see a sequel to this game in a different setting- perhaps Kyoto, and hope suckerpunch stickwith this type of game for the future.

Some graphic details are amazing, but most of these details are aesthetics. Animations are irregular, sometimes they look great and other times not so much. The AI of the enemies is pretty bad, and is most notable in stealth. Tsushima Island is kinda empty and repetitive, you'll find the same group of 3 animals, the same group of soldiers, the same villager you'll have to save, one fox den, one bird, one temple, a camp. And then repeat all over again.

The main story is pretty predictable but entertaining. The legendary side quests are much more interesting since some side characters overshadow Jin's story. The normal side quests are pretty much the same fetch / kill and return.

The duels are the most entertaining part of the game and their visuals are where the game shines the most.

The multiplayer adds some stories, and they introduce magical and fantasy elements as Onis, a sorceress, possessed beings and ghosts. It has other two different modes, but we have seen this better done in Nioh or Sekiro.

A solid game, entertaining but just that.

this, in my opinion, is the swan song to the PS4's life cycle, it goes out with a bang, this is easily the best sony exclusive of the generation, and a contender for game of the year, I have no complaints about the game itself, I just wish the included commentary and art books were longer, and that there were more than 2 endings, with the choices you make along your journey determiningthis, in my opinion, is the swan song to the PS4's life cycle, it goes out with a bang, this is easily the best sony exclusive of the generation, and a contender for game of the year, I have no complaints about the game itself, I just wish the included commentary and art books were longer, and that there were more than 2 endings, with the choices you make along your journey determining your alignment from samurai to or ghost, rather than one, albeit emotional decision at the end of the main story, the only real complaint I have is that in quick and heated moments, sometimes I would try to change my stance and it wouldn't work all the time, but that's most likely my own fault, and my only other major complaint is that you can only climb on certain parts of cliffs, and only grapple on specific trees and buildings, I've been spoiled by Breath of the wild and the Arkham series in that regards, Expand

    Incredibly fun game!

This game exceeded my expectations in many ways. The graphics are some of the best of the generation, and the story was fantastic. The free-roam aspects are fun, and, in my opinion, comparable to Spiderman PS4 with hidden collectibles and enemy hideouts littered around the Island. The Guided Wind mechanic is a great idea that makes the world feel alive and adds to

With a AAA game of this magnitude bugs, glitches, and missing elements tend to stick out like a sore thumb. Unfortunately this game has its fair share. From small things like glitchy falls and clipping through objects to nearly game breaking freezes and crashes. Those bugs in addition with the lack of customization in Gameplay and Accessibility Settings really highlights the gap between this and other respected AAA titles.

Ghost of Tsushima is great, but with a little more polish it could have been nearly perfect. This title could really benefit from some additions that many single player games ship with, such a button mapping, NG+, more specific camera settings, etc. Overall very enjoyable experience, 8.5/10.

What a way to close the generation from Sony. Exclusives are a need, bravo.

With Ghost of Tsushima under its belt, Sucker Punch deserves to be in the same conversation as Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Sony Santa Monica.

El mejor juego de PS4 sin duda, un placer a la vista, una obra de arte en todos los sentidos. Historia 10, jugabilidad 10, gráficos 10.. Indispensable si tienes la ps4.

The best samurai game in a long time and a great fun for all, who love action. Love for Japan and its history is a big plus, but its knowledge is not necessary to enjoy every minute of this beautiful game. [Issue#305]

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
