Ghost of Tsushima is a good game, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. This is a very beautiful and great game. But for some reason the story didn’t catch me. Perhaps a romantic storyline for the protagonist or one of his companions would be useful.
And the question that bothered me throughout the game: why did the central female character not wash her face throughout the entire plot?

Ghost of Tsushima is a beautiful, vibrant game with great gameplay and a pretty decent story, and a great sendoff for the PS4 generation.

Ghost of Tsushima is a beautiful, vibrant game with great gameplay and a pretty decent story, and a great sendoff for the PS4 generation.

If we're talking about beautiful games, then Ghost of Tsushima is up there with the best. The game doesn't have the best "graphics" I've ever seen but the visual presentation and the look of the open world is really good, mind-blowing at points. I think the soundtrack is also very fitting, really gives the samurai/Japanese vibe. This isn't the biggest open-world that has been presented but it doesn't need to, because getting the platinum for this game was so fun and I never got bored. It doesn't surprise me anymore how many people have platinumed this game.

One of the best parts of the game and the reason why it has such a high completion rate is fun and well crafted gameplay. While you play through the game you will unlock different things to keep the gameplay such as combat and platforming fresh and fun. In combat you will unlock different stances and each stance is good against one specific enemy type. You will also unlock different "ghost" weapons such as kunai knifes, smoke bombs and sticky bombs. You will also get a bow that can shoot normal and fire arrows. That is how this game succeeds, while you progress the gameplay slightly changes and keeps things fresh. Platforming is also a part of the gameplay but compared to the combat it's very minor and it's very simple to climb. The open world is filled with things to do, maybe not RDR2 levels of things to do, but enough. There are of course main quests and side quests, but there are also shrines you can climb, foxes you can follow to shrines and you can even perform haikous and more, which will net you different items respectively. The only bad thing I can say about the gameplay is that in combat the camera can be absolutely horrible. Especially while fighting inside a house or a tent or any enclosed space. Fighting outside is much better but can also sometimes have camera problems.

The story is pretty good for the most part, the overall main quest had me immersed into the world. The side quests are also for the most part very good and give better insight to the people that live on the island of Tsushima. The story revolves around the samurai Jin Sakai, who is the main protagonist of the game. It follows his path of trying to save his island from a Mongol invasion. This requires him to forge a new path, the way of the ghost. I won't go into more details because of spoilers, but most of the story is pretty solid, and the characters and dialogue are very well written. The only thing I didn't like was that I felt that the ending didn't feel complete. The ending had a great moment so it's not all bad, but I thought the ending felt a little short and could have been much more expanded upon.

To sum up, Ghost of Tsushima is a great game that has great gameplay and a solid story. The game never got boring, and for a main story that is about 20 hours and maybe 20 hours additional to platinum that's a long time to keep a game fresh, but Sucker Punch succeeded. I recommend everyone that owns a PS4 or even a PS5 to get this game, I was never really into samurai games but this game really is an exception.

Ghost of Tsushima is a wonderfully realized modern masterpiece only slightly hindered by nitpicky polish issues.

This game will provide you with many screenshot opportunities, as breathtaking visuals are around every corner.
The game overall looks good, but not as good as it could be. Clipping is a common issue with geometry. Feet moving through rocks as you're climbing, bushes not reacting to you running through them, and just objects not being solid in general. Walking animations are dated, even compared to games made four or five years ago.

Combat in this game can take a little while to get used to, especially the camera placement, but that's not to say combat is bad. It's fluid, fast paced without being overwhelming visually, and very polished. Enemies are not damage sponges that you smack around. You have to anticipate them, counter them, use your environment to your advantage, and play to their weaknesses.
Stealth is a ton of fun, and even spending a lot of time plotting out and executing a plan to quietly take out a large camp of enemies doesn't get boring.
The horseback riding could be a bit better. The horse cannot ride as fast as you might be used to if you have played Red Dead Redemption 2, and steering is a hair slow, but it's not bad either.
Using gadgets in the game is fun, and using them effectively feels incredibly satisfying, especially in stealth.

The story of Ghost of Tsushima plays into a lot of tropes from old Samurai films, and war films in general. The hero's tale of the protagonist, Jin, doesn't veer from tradition and predictability often, but when it does, it's satisfying and pays off very well.
What makes up for the average plot, is the writing and acting. Every character is very well fleshed out, and developed in meaningful ways. Finding a character you can't relate to and enjoy in this game will be a tough task. Even though the villain has generic motivations at first, the layers of development behind his execution make him feared and respected.
The actors portraying the cast of Ghost of Tsushima should all be commended. Their individual and overall performances were beyond great.

The music in Ghost of Tsushima is sparse. You wont hear a lot of it in the open world, and if you do, it doesn't do much to grab your ear. In cutscenes though, the music really shines. The music is true to the period the game is set in, and adds to your immersion in a big way.

Overall, Ghost of Tsushima has small issues that I think held it back from being a Game of The Year, but it was nonetheless one of the best games I played in 2020.

It's very exotic and immersive. Also, I loved being immersed into traditional Japanese values and codes, it's a real lesson of humility which brought me to reflexions.
But the game is not perfect : among all the NPC's in the game, there's only a few models, so every person you'll save or meet will seem to be the same every time. It's sad because it can ruin immersion, which is very cool otherwise.

This game is one of the best that came out this year, and for quite a few reasons.

1: The story is engaging and dramatic. Jin Sakai is wrought with conflict as his home is under siege by the mongol empire, and his point of view on the art of war changes. Therefore, he must abandon what he knows and become a new kind of warrior. One that goes against the code of the samurai. The story is split into multiple arcs with side quests that are just as engaging as the main game and are hardly worth passing. And when the credits rolled, I was actually crying. And very few games can make me do that.

2: The gameplay is tight, responsive, and fun. Switching between sword stances mid-combat to be more effective against enemies with certain weapons makes every fight heart-pumping, and a little bit strategic. And all the unlockable combos via technique points are all useful in some way. And when you're not fighting all-out, you're being a stealthy ghost taking out enemies from the shadows, either with a bow or a dagger, while jumping and swinging with a grappling hook.

3: The appeal of this game can be described in one word: GORGEOUS. This game is so beautiful and massive, with the entire island of Tsushima open to explore. Japan is one of my favorite countries, because it has an intriguing culture and history to share. The way people bow to greet you, the many haikus you can compose, the authentic 13th century buildings you can walk around, both outside and inside, sequences with sliding doors to open, etc.

The only gripe I have with this game is the performance. It generally runs at 30 FPS, but will sometimes drop into the mid-teens. The first time I experienced frame drops was during a cutscene, and the final time I experienced frame drops during my first playthrough was near the end of the third act, when you're facing Khotun Khan. But, luckily, the frame drops aren't exactly game-breaking, and the game hasn't crashed on me a single time.

Do I recommend this game? Absolutely. This game is freaking awesome, and I enjoyed every second playing it.

First 10/10 that I’m giving a game on Metacritic.

Amazing gameplay, story and a fantastic combat system. The ranking is also very creative.

Awesome free roam game. This is one game I would absolutely recommend.

    Graphics is also very good.

Bought it with 60 dollars and gotta say i don't like it at all. Very disappointing. Story is very generic, but my main issue is that character is not in center of screen. So playing it really makes my head hurt. So just before you buy it make sure you are able to play game where character is literally in the corner of screen. I have never seen it done like that. Inferior version of basically any Assassin's Creed. Graphics are cool, but what else? There's nothing interesting to do in this open world. People who try to say it's better than AC games seem to forget that big part of AC games is parkour.

There is not a lot new here, but it's a very well made game. It's basically what Assassins Creed Japan would be like if UbiSoft wasn't so hell bent against doing the obvious. When you take a well-worn formula and add fantastic presentation (kurisawa mode is a nice touch) and storytelling, you get a great game.
It has some issues. It suffers from repetitiveness common to most open world

My favorite game of 2020. Combat is great, the game looks phenomenal, the story is also great and it's one of the few games which has a fast travel system that you don't want to use, on top of that the duels are amazing and are easily my favorite part of the game.

However, I do have some small nitpicks. Firstly, while the story and characters are great, the story is very predictable.

Secondly, hard mode isn't very hard the combat is almost too intuitive, I think i've only died twice outside of the duels and while it's cool being extremely overpowered, I would like more of a challenge, like why not have enemies as skilled as the people you're against in the duels in the regular combat loop? because the duels are eeeeeextremely fun. I still have other nitpicks but they are super minor.

BTW Those nitpicks are the only thing stopping the game from being my absolute favorite of all time, everything else is an A+

Which is so unfortunate because this game certainly over stayed it's welcome and it's so good in the first hours, but when you do mostly the same thing over and over again it breaks down an easily 10/10 game... it also doesn't help that the second act of the game is so weak compared to it's third and first for various really terrible story decisions in my humble opinion. The game finishes with a really strong final act though which really helped bring up the score and a fantastic soundtrack, but the game felt like it had repetitive game-play, dragged story, flashy but sometimes really unresponsive combat. There is no denying the techinal achievement Sucker Punch have pulled off here. Getting GoT to run smoothly on a base PS4 is nothing short of astonishing, and aside from a few framerate hiccups towards the end of the story, its an incredible experience. The level of detail applied to the enviroment helps make it feel as close to photo realistic as the Playstation 4 is going to ever achieve. The way the grass flows in the wind, how Jin reaches down from his horse to feel the flowers through his finger tips as he rides. These small elements are moments of wonder that can't help but make you smile. The games photo mode does an excellent job of highlighting Tsushimas beauty, and in some ways becomes a mini game on its own. With so many filters, timescales and bokeh options applied, its hard not to stop at every cliff face to take "just one more" photo.

Loading and fast travel are incredibly fast. Weirdly infact. I can't be sure someone didn't slip one of these new PS5 SSD's into my console when I wasn't looking. If this is any indication of the future, then I'm sad to announce that people will be hearing from me less due to the reduction my available time to pick up my phone.

While the graphical achievements are clear for all to see, the story is where Ghost of Tsushima falls a little flat. For a game with such an intriguing and well acted antagonist, an opportunity is missed to delve far deeper into Khotun Khan. Having an almost 'Thanos' feel to him, constantly pulling strings in the background feels ominous and powerful, but the payoff doesn't match the journey. Jin's backstory and upbringing is fleshed out well through flashback cutscenes within the main story that help you invest more in the supporting casts decisions, but you never feel a true connection to anyone. The game pulls off only one real gutpunching moment, and it doesn't come from where you'd expect.

Story wise, the game is essentially split into 3 chapters, You can choose to concentrate solely on these story missons and make a B line for the credits, but so much story and lore is missed through side chartacter development if completing the story is your only goal. its recommended you at least follow character arcs that you feel you have an affinity with, and the game does a good job of introducing you to the first of each of these through the main scenerio. The acting and motion capture is strong. It's no The Last of US, but it holds up well over Tsusima's 30hrs and never feels awkward or stiff.

The overall gameplay is a mixed bag. The combat itself is strong, offering you 4 different unlockable stances to deal with different enemy variations. This makes the combat feel deep, and there's little more enjoyable in the game than switching between multiple enemies quickly while choosing the correct stance. On top of a boat load of unlockable techniques and passives, Jin will take upwards of 50 hrs to fully upgrade everything he has to offer. Unfortunately the variation of gameplay can quickly become repetitve while utilising these abilities. Side quests are all too familar and always appear to end the same way. Liberating Tsushimas many mongol camps can be fun when fighting head on, but due to the games terrible stealth mechanics, approaching them silently all becomes a bit copy and paste. Enemy AI is almost laughable while in stealth mode, which doesn't help anyone looking to fully immerse themseleves in this part of Japanese history. I doubt there was ever a mongol that chased a Japanese Samurai from 2ft behind, only to give up whilst being audibly confused, because the samurai entered a tent.

saying this, one of the most notable features Ghost of Tsushima offers is the complete lack of UI, and it works wonders. With a swipe of the Dualshocks touchpad, Jin can follow the wind to his next objective, or become sidetracked by a small yellow leading him to one of the islands many mysteries...

Fast forward 10 hrs, and the repetitve nature of the now highly annoying the yellow bird appearing on your screen every 3 mins just feels like a game mechanic in itself. It becomes all it set out to destroy (I assume). The world loses its sense of awe and magic it has in its first few hours, mainly because this now stupid bird (You can't shoot it with an arrow by the way) never leads you to anything new. Its always another Fox Den, another Haiku, another Hotspring. You never feel like had you not followed tweety bird you would be missing out on a secret, and thats a shame. The premise is great, and works for a time, but i'm sure it will be improved upon by others in the next few years.

Overall, Ghost of Tsushima is an enjoyable swansong for the PS4. What it lacks in gameplay variety, it makes of for in its sheer beauty and fantastic combat. Hopefully with a bit more fleshing out in a sequel, it can hit new highs.

The storyline is set in 1274, during the first Mongol invasion in Japan and follows a young samurai, Jin Sakai who is the nephew and raised by a leader to a clan of samurai. He was saved by a common thief, Yuna after the first attack of the mongols. Realizing that the traditional ways of samurai won’t defeat the mongol invaders he resorts to practicing what wold be considered dishonourable methods taught by Yuna, such as assassinating and sneaking around enemy areas in hopes to drive the mongols out of Tsushima.
The character development was AMAZING and all the characters except for the mongol invaders (obviously) was likeable. Even Jin’s uncle, Lord Shimura was likeable despite how much he had a strong distaste to Jin being so dishonourable in his eyes. To me I couldn’t help but like the uncle and respect the fact that he was so strong to his beliefs. And it was interesting to watch Jin start off as a stoic samurai who was very strict on following traditions slowly turn into a 110% bad ass who conveys and acts on his emotions and deliberately not follow tradition whilst remaining humble and maintaining his strong moral compass.
The cinema and design in this game was so beautiful and realistic in my opinion. It was extremely captivating and only drew me more onto the game and story.
As for game play, there is very little I didn’t like about the game. The game is similar to Assassins Creed without trying to be like that game. It has quite the handful of unique side activities and features such as bamboo strikes to earn more resolve, hot springs to max your health bar, haikus, honouring shrines, quests inspired by Japanese folklore that lets you obtain armour and new abilities, and the option to play the game in Japanese or English with or without subtitles. However, there are a few things I think they could’ve added to the game, like icons for where shops to upgrade your stuff are. All what was there was a town/farm/temple icon and you would pretty much have to navigate around there until you find what you need. They also could’ve added a mini map at the bottom corner or at the top to help you find stuff, instead of relying on the wind to help you find stuff, as there were more than a few times that I was going the opposite direction from where I needed to be. Overall, I thought the game was fantastic and most likely could play over and over and not get bored.

There's some depth here. But now we have to discuss the bad, and it almost ruins the game completely-THE COMBAT. Despite not being very difficult, combat is a mess. The camera is HORRENOUS. You'll often find yourself dying because all of a sudden, there's a tree or cliff obscuring your view of yourself in combat, so the enemy dices you into pieces. Water stance is supposed to be effective against shield enemies, but yet it usually takes no less than 20 triangle presses to break their guard. Then, about half the time when you're ready to perform an assassination, you press square like it prompts you to, you'll just quick slice at him instead, engaging in normal combat. Also, when you, say, press triangle and circle at the same time to perform a Heavenly Strike, with full resolve, you'll do nothing and get diced up by the enemy. And rolling? Don't even bother, you'll either roll completely the opposite direction of where you're aiming, or roll so far out of the way, that you're nowhere near a position to counter. None of that would really be a game killer if even at full sword upgrade, you were still severely underpowered. A beautiful and well thought out game ruined by severely flawed combat. I didn't even mentioned that the enemy combatants are blessed with 8-12 hit combos, while you're relegated to maybe 3 or 4. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ghost of Tsushima was easily the best breath of fresh air into gaming in the year 2020.

From sucker Punch Productions, who we all expected to continue the Infamous series, we actually got what is easily the best Samurai game ever made to date. We've all seen plenty of other Samurai games in the past, or even Samurai like games. I'm sure many would say Tenchu, a game series which was pretty good back in its day, as well as there are many who have a love for The Way of the Samurai games, myself included, even if they are a series of games which are rather rough around the edges, they have a charm to them which keeps fans loyal.

Ghost of Tsushima is that game which listened to everything that gamers wanted and just delivered it. It is by no means a perfect game, but you can certainly expect a lot. From the first teaser trailer we saw a few years back, we all had an idea of what it would be, but we never expected it to be as well done as it is. From the story, to the combat to the open world exploration and the visuals, there's something to love here.

Key things to note are open world and exploration here. Ghost of Tsushima is not a game one can easily rush through. I am sure it is possible and we likely have speed runners achieving quick play through times already, but it is a game that is meant to be taken time with and fully enjoyed as much as possible. There's plenty to see and plenty to discover, and almost every bit of the island of Tsushima will have something to offer in the way of a reward for you exploring it, from a new cosmetic, a new secret or just a breath taking view.

The games visuals are gorgeous. Not the greatest of the generation, that achievement belongs to The Last of Us II, but this game still has an incredibly beautiful world brought to life by the talent of Sucker Punch. To change directions so strongly, going from modern day cities in Infamous to a very historically accurate world of feudal Japan, they've more than knocked the ball out of the park with how it works and everything else to do with giving the game its gorgeous visual style. From the way plants, grass and tress blow in the wind to how blood splatters from your defeated enemies in combat, everything is something impressive to see.

Even in game controls are somewhat linked to how the games visuals play out. Instead of a compass, a mini-map or a line to follow on the ground, you have what the game calls the "guiding wind" which with a brush of the touch pad on the PS Controller, you can summon a wind that will blow and show you the direction of your targeted location. To describe it in word doesn't do it real justice, so I'd advise either checking out a game play video or playing the game yourself. But the feature works so well to keep you in the game world without breaking immersion while navigating.

The story of the game is where it honestly does hold a lot of strength. While it's certainly not the best story I've played in games in recent years, that achievement goes to Red Dead Redemption II for me personally, it's story is very meaningful and worth every moment from the start to the end. The impact from the intro, which is one of the best intros in games I've seen in a long while, possibly even ever, to the very end of it, you get moments which will tug at all emotions Such as a dramatic scene being the intro, where you ride in on horse back straight into battle, fighting Mongolian warriors, to the humour of various moments from certain side missions and the comic relief character of Kenji, the alcoholic trader, to the heart tugging moments of when Jin Sakai first breaks his code of the Samurai and takes a life without honour, to when he faces against his former best friend and brother-in-arms, Ryuzo the Ronin, to the sad tale of Yuriko, the woman who looked after young Jin after his mother and father passed.

The combat is by far the best feature of the whole game. Every move and strike feels realistic and the combat is tactical. Requiring careful decisions and strikes as well as quick reaction times. I could not do it full justice, but it's certainly impressive as Masters of Japanese combat styles have been shown videos (which you can find on YouTube) of the combat styles and have said they're very accurate, well done and impressive. You have four types of enemies, sword users, long arm users, quick attackers and brutes, but each group has it's own sub-types as well. Honestly, you need to play the game to truly get the best experience of the combat. It never gets old.

The only downside to the game is that some things can be repetitive, which is what holds it back from a 10/10 rating.

The inclusion of Multiplayer and tons of new content for free boosted the score 8 to 9, as it made playing through the game on new game plus worth while plus Sucker Punch didn't ask for a single penny for it. Plus the legends mode is just so good with friends.

    9/10 score.

Visualy stunning first-class action rpg. Amazing combat physics, great story, really good gameplay. Not giving 10 just because side-quests can be a lil repetative. Went for the platinum trophy on this one

No words will describe how perfect this game is. Each and every single little thing in this game stands on it's own. This game is the very definition of the word "masterpiece".

How Ghost of Tsushima Ruined Video Games For Me

Most of what I am about to write is nothing that hasn't already been said by professional and humble video gamers alike. But what I haven't heard about is the impact that this game has had on my video gaming experience as a whole. I only realized the depth of this change weeks after I had fought my last Mongol and platinumed the game. In a pursuit to find the next adventure to sink my teeth into, I found myself comparing every other game to Ghost regardless of what genre they belonged to. That's how you know Ghost is truly a masterpiece.

In a day and age where video games go gold and are released in a half-baked state, and then gamers are asked to not only pay full price, but also have no guarantee that the original vision of the game may never be fully realized, Ghost is a refreshing reminder of what a finished and polished product should be. With the amount of action and scenery on-screen at all times, you would expect frame-rate drops, nasty pop-ins, character clipping issues, and everything else we have come to see from largely interactive, open-world games. While playing Ghost, I can count on one hand the number of times the frame-rate dropped enough for me to notice.

Even if most of the other large open-world games solved the glitches and frame-rate problems, I have never seen a game optimized as well as Ghost. Let's take fast traveling for example. By definition, it should be a simple and "fast" way of making your way across a large map. But what I have come to see in most games is that many times, it's neither simple nor fast. In other games, there are times when I need to decide whether or not to use the fast travel system because either it's inconveniently designed through specific travel points which require you to go there first, or the load times are so unbearable, that riding my horse (I'm looking at you AC: Odyssey) is much faster than the "fast travel" system. In Ghost, since fast traveling was actually quick, I sometimes couldn't even finish reading the on-screen tip, so I never had to choose what to do out of need. I could choose to enjoy the scenery along the way or use the fast travel system to get there quick. And when I got there, I was never disappointed. I never grew tired of discovering new locations because each place seemed hand-built to evoke a sense of awe and majesty. From the top of a cliff overlooking a waterfall, to the endless fields of colorful flowers swaying in the wind, the joy of finding a new place stayed with me all the way until I hit 100% completion of the game.

I could go on for days about the combat, the gear/item management, leveling system, cinematics, voice acting, story, etc... but again, it's nothing you haven't heard before. It's all fantastic. Here's where it's different. Every game I play from this day on will, inevitably, be compared to Ghost, for better or for worse. This game ruined other video games for me. It is a technical masterpiece that, for me, has created a ripple effect so large, that it affects not only the games I play now, but also show how games in the past have missed the mark, and sets the bar high for games of the future. This is what a finished, well-thought out, lovingly optimized, open-world adventure game should be: perfection on every level.

    Amazing art direction. Exciting gameplay.
Masterful soundtrack. Fun open world exploration. Lackluster cutscenes.

An excellent combat system which allows many play-styles, sublime graphical presentation and an emotional story help 'Ghost of Tsushima' stand far above its 'open-world' contemporaries. The world is packed full of activities that are fun, but never feels overwhelming.

The story is fantastic. The side mission is even more enjoyable. My only criticism is that it miss some costumization

The game of the year! I really enjoy all the game and I think Jin Sakai should get the trophy... He deserves (and the voice actor too)
    Maybe a Underrated game

I can't believe this only got an 83 reviewer score. This game is beautiful, fun, and realistic! This was one of the few games I decided to go full platinum trophy on and I'm not a hard-core gamer. I highly recommend, especially if you like history and Japanese culture

The best samurai game in a long time and a great fun for all, who love action. Love for Japan and its history is a big plus, but its knowledge is not necessary to enjoy every minute of this beautiful game. [Issue#305]

Ghost of Tsushima is a flawed, but fun, game. While the gameplay itself was solid, and the story was decent, I definitely expected a lot more from Sony’s final PlayStation 4 exclusive. It had enough to keep me hooked, but lacked the polish we’ve all grown to love from a Sony first party game.

Ultimately, it feels like the game could have benefited from a smaller scope or a more linear structure. Focus on the duels could have created a more engrossing product, especially if it honed in on the narrative for a more concise and cinematic experience. But as it stands, Ghost of Tsushima is another AAA open world title and doesn’t seek to define itself as anything other than that.
