    Sigh… Where to begin?

Leveling: Going into a legitimate, second year, expansion, I expected the 34-40 leveling to take a while. Especially since one of their key selling points for their digital collector’s edition was the inclusion of exotic class items that increased XP gains. Nothing could have been further from the truth. If you had 10 or more bounties ready to turn in and an XP booster – either the class item or the Red Bull promotion item – you could literally go from 34 to 39 in 5 seconds of mashing the X button. If you had a full complement of 16 bounties ready to turn in, not only would you go from 34 to the new max level of 40 but also have enough XP to get a set of Motes of Light. They may have taken Light Level out of obtaining max level, but leveling still revolves around increasing your average Light score regardless of max level.

Story: Bungie heavily promoted the story of this expansion so imagine my surprise when the main story arc could be completed in roughly 3 hours. Oryx, the titular Taken King who is seeking revenge for his son, Crota, is shown to be a real bad ass of a boss in the intro cutscene. Yet he’s a complete push over from that point on. An entire defending fleet was obliterated by him but somehow our chump Guardians can manage to get into his Dreadnaught no problem. The final fight with Oryx is nothing short of laughable. The post-Oryx story missions – especially the chain that starts with the mission “Paradox” – are harder than the main story mission itself.

And this is where the wheels really fall off the bus because the amount of recycled content used in this $40 expansion is nothing short of pathetic. During the main story alone, we’re sent through multiple pieces of old content rehashed; for example, being forced to run Chamber of Night backwards yet again. The front half of the raid from Dark Below is reused, as is the front half of Vault of Glass (again) in a secondary story arc line. There is even one mission where you literally do the exact same thing in the exact same place as the final boss fight in House of Wolves main story line – and Ghost even makes a direct comment about fighting in the same place. Quest chains with year old patrol missions as critical steps, running old missions backwards yet again… It’s almost as if Bungie is TRYING to troll people.

But, the Dreadnaught! You might be saying. The Dreadnaught is new and a decent added area but, to be brutally honest, it’s really just four medium sized spaces that have a lot of empty areas connecting them. Exploration is fun, initially, but then it just becomes tiresome. In the main story, you only deal with the Dreadnaught three times. After the main story, you’re sent back to place patrol beacons which you then go back and get your own patrol missions from… No access to the sparrow makes it seem larger than it really is.

Gear: Gearing took 10 steps backwards in TTK. There’s no consistency anymore. For example, the completion of the aforementioned Paradox post-main story arc provided a legendary armor reward. That reward was a measly 220 defense item, despite being a level 40 legendary. Statistically, it was inferior to level 38 rare armor. I got a better rare item from a Cryptarch Engram package when I went to turn in the quest. That same item from the faction vendor is 280 defense rating; earning the item from a drop could give the player an item with a rating anywhere between 220 and 300. This is all due to the new Infusion system: That piddly 220 item can be upgraded with the higher rated rare items by dismantling them and paying a cost of end game grind legendary marks, motes of light, and glimmer, in order to raise the stats. This has caused gearing to be all over the place, making little sense, with rarity and risk taking a back seat to total defense and attack stats (which are the sole items that determine light score and, thus, your ability to do more difficult things). Meanwhile, some legendary gear only has one perk while others have two. There’s almost no rhyme or reason to the gearing system now. And this doesn’t even get into the grindfest, especially if you want to upgrade your old year 1 exotic weapons and armor.

Overall, the only real perks to this expansion are the few quality of life changes: The UI, the quest tracking, the bounty changesm and the new subclasses. Everything else is literally more of the same. I don’t understand these critic reviews because TTK falls victim to many of the same things that got critically panned in Destiny’s first DLC, The Dark Below, especially in terms of poor story and grindy gearing than penalizes long time players. Yes, they added more cutscenes, but that doesn’t mean they’ve made a better product. Far from it.

The fact that they still use the old re-hash method i.e. making you go through content you already went through a thousand times over but backwards really just sets the tone as to things to come. Three xpacs from now we will have to go through the Dreadnaught again but upside down.

The story is and was never really going to be that interesting. The real problem I keep having with this game is how quickly it gets so boring. The expansion is thin, it obsoletes the stuff you paid so much money to get, and bungie is adding ever more clever ways to nickel and dime the player. I won't be suckered by my own mother next time. What really hurt Destiny was Activision's greed. In order to make more money, Bungie was forced to gut the game and remove a significant amount of content to be sold as future DLC. What's left logically feels incomplete. The story barely makes sense, and many plot points are never resolved. Every single character is shallow and underdeveloped. What's their story? What is their goal? The game never tells you.But it's okay, pay $50 more and you may get a continuation of the story in the latest 'Taken King' DLC. I'm sure you'll love it, especially if you're like me and you already spent over $100 on the base game (I pre-ordered the Guardian Edition, which came with the first two DLCs for "free").

There's plenty of missions, but they're all very repetitive and boring. Collect a certain number of items, kill some enemies, protect your little A.I. companion... and that's about it, really. If you ever hope to get any better gear, you'll be repeating these missions over and over and over again until you're absolutely sick of them. The endless grind doesn't feel rewarding or even remotely fun - and this is coming from a person who's spent the past 10 years playing World of Warcraft.

As far as multiplayer goes, you can do the boring missions in a group of three players. But really, why would you even bother? There are also drop-in/drop-out public events. You're in the middle of one of your boring missions when suddenly a massive tank appears from the sky, and you and any other player nearby need to work together to destroy it.

Then there are 3-player strikes (it's like WoW's dungeons), and these are actually quite fun. There's a handy player finder tool, so if none of your friends play Destiny, the game will hook you up with two more players. Some of them are pretty bad, though, and more than once did I have a player tagging along doing nothing or simply sitting in a corner, while the remaining two of us did all the hard work. You can report these slackers, but there seems to be no penalty for this behavior whatsoever.

Destiny also has raids, which are basically strikes with larger fireteams and tougher enemies. Unfortunately, there is no player finder for these. You are forced to go to various websites and find your raid team there. It's inconvenient, and the number one reason why I've never done any raids. They're supposed to be fun, but I'll never know unless Bungie adds a player finder.

PvP was Destiny's biggest selling point, and it seems to be the focus of its developers, seeing how pretty much every single event they've introduced since launch was all about PvP (the only exception was The Queen's Wrath). If you're like me and prefer PvE over PvP, you'll find this rather disappointing. If you love PvP, add 2 more points to my rating. Bungie is constantly tweaking weapons and trying to make PvP more balanced, so that's good, I suppose.

And that's Destiny - the game that promised to be the next Halo, but bigger and better in every way. It could've been good if Bungie was allowed to do their work without Activision's interference. As it is now, it just feels like a desperate money grab. Despite all this, Destiny seems to boast an active fan base (if the official Destiny Facebook page is anything to go by), so the game obviously isn't all that bad. Just really, really flawed.

If you're interested and you'd like to give it a shot, I recommend you wait for a few months until the game gets cheaper, or ideally wait for some sort of an "ultimate" edition, which will inevitably come out and which will contain all the DLCs for a few bucks.

Now, let's say you love The Taken King; you've bought everything related to Destiny in the past year and you've put over 100+ hours into the game: you know for certain that you'll love the new expansion as well. But does it justify the price? Honestly, the answer is no.

Now let me tell you why:

You can get to level 40 in literally 2 hours. You do the new raid for the week, a few nightfalls, which I think will be a lot of fun... but after a week of casual playing... what is left to justify the price?

If, on the other hand, you are new to Destiny, then congratulations! You've got an amazing deal with all the Year 1 content available to you on launch of The Taken King. But for existing players... well, let me just say that it's a slap in the face -- you get the original game that you already have, codes for content that you've already played... and all that you are left with for your hard-earned money is another code for The Taken King.

    It's all so very disappointing. : (

They're design team dropped the ball again as far as the aesthetics of the gear goes. And to have gear that I really liked and put lots of time in to get, then to have it nullified and then forced to use new gear that I don't like........that REALLY sucks. So the whole Taken King thing has left my a little disconcerted. Because of they're decision on how to carry this game on to year 2, and they're constant need to dictate the way the game is played, I'm not sure how much longer I'll play. Not that it matters to them, they already have my money. As it stands, unless it gets better as I play it more, the Taken King expansion is not very good. i give it a 4, my grief for all my old gear won't allow me to rate it any higher. Expand

To expensive, not enough NEW and compelling content. As a stand alone dlc, not worth 40$ maybe 20, not 40.

1: reused assets for major parts of game. INCLUDING CAMPAIGN MISSIONS!! (LAZY!) also THE TAKEN ARE JUST RESKINS of old enemies, with a few cool new tricks and mechanics.

2: Campaign Story is very basic. Bad guy wants revenge for dead son. No depth, no backstory for Major characters. No successful or meaningful attempt to give the destiny universe any soul. The final boss battle vs Oryx is underwhelming and after killing him, no decent rewards are given. Very shallow. Is destiny INCAPABLE of making a compelling story? or did all the writers that wrote HALO leave?...Oh wait..

3: The dreadnaught is just another empty playing space that offers nothing but re-spawning enemies. Just like vanilla destiny. Looks great yet offers nothing more compelling than killing the same mobs of enemies that you will get bored of after a few hours. Novelty wears of very quickly.

4: Strikes have improved with some new mechanics. This is a good thing. However NON of the bosses are given any tangible back story within the campaign so once again your just killing this oversized boss with no emotional or logical attachment. Boss battles have improved, no longer stationary infinite health bullet sponges. Strikes have greatly improved, (best part of dlc thus far)

5: Light system is gone! GREAT now we can have what bungie originally promised us, a choice in what armor we want to wear and not what armor we HAVE to wear.

6: Yet to see raid. VOG is the only decent raid, Crota's end was not that great.

New content is always interesting, however this hardly has any content.

There still is a lack of story, it's the same "Go here, kill these baddies, return to sell/decrypt your junk." As for "Story Missions," I paced through them within two hours. Weapons and Gear is still the same as light, just different. Instead of hunting for "light," you just hunt for a higher defense and attack.

"We heard player feedback and are reducing the grind."
WRONG. The grind is worse than it ever has been, especially with the infusion system, the change to legendary marks, and the change to the light level.

"You no longer need light to reach max level."
Technically true and yet oh so meaningless. Being level 40 means jack all because what matters is your light score. What generates your light score? An average of your defense and attack stats. With raid gear, what's the highest light score? Currently 310. Put a decimal point before the third digit and you'll see this system is just a new coat of paint. We're still REALLY hovering around level 29-31, it's just presented with a different number system.

"You no longer have a cap on the amount of marks you can earn in a week."
Again, a half truth and veiled lie. Once you get past the missions you get after finishing the main story, most of which give one-time rewards of Legendary Marks, you can REALISTICALLY only earn 240 marks in a week. Mark rewards are now limited per account rather than per character, and are capped at 15 per day for the daily story, 15 per day for the daily pvp, and 30 per week for your weekly heroic strikes. Beyond what you can earn, you can obtain more Marks by dismantling Legendaries, but only 3 to 5 Marks at a time. In short, we went from having 200 Vanguard and 200 Crucible marks per character per week to 240-ish Legendary Marks per account per week, more depending on how many legendaries you dismantle. Same song and dance, different line of BS from Bungie.

The counter argument will be that you don't need to buy stuff from the vendors, which is largely true. Since gearing has become a flustercuck of the highest order, with gear drops and engram decryption determined by your average light score, it's possible to get rare items that completely outclass exotics and legendaries. As such, it makes the 280 gear on the factor vendors mostly pointless unless you're going for a cosmetic look. I currently have a 297 blue sniper rifle equipped; compare that to my 290 exotic scout rifle. You'll need lots of those Legendary Marks to infuse (upgrade) your weapons and armor. Infusing your gear is the new grind. But, hey, at least we can keep a piece of armor we happen to like for the entire expansion if we want, so I guess that's a plus. If you want your old exotics back, that's 150 marks per exotic plus needing to re-level them yet again. That's if they even felt compelled to upgrade the exotic you're looking for into year 2.

A lot of these user reviews praise the story and post story content. The only thing I can think is that they must be shills because the main story is a laugh and can be beaten in about 2.5 hours tops and continues to make minimal sense. Cayde-6's narration is the only saving grace of the whole thing. The missions following the main story are largely designed around old systems, specifically patrols and public events. The ENTIRE Taken War story arc is nothing more than short survival missions that lead into public events which are literally copy/pastes of House of Wolves' roaming wolfpacks. Only now it's with Taken Lieutenants and Champions. Variks offers a mission chain that requires killing 900 Fallen across three planets (Thin the Pack). The VAST majority of the missions after finishing the main story are rehashes of old missions and raid areas, nothing more. Even the main story arc, despite adding the entire new zone, is guilty of spending about half its time in old mission areas and year 1 content.

The *NEW* strikes are actually very decent, as they have improved mechanics and the bosses aren't as bullet spongy. But there are only 4 of them (3 if you're on xbox). The rest of the strikes in rotation are largely the same except they now have Taken mobs thrown in them. But you're still going to be sick of killing Valus Tu'arc on Mars.

The new PVP maps are pretty much the same design as the last. The new mode, Rift (Destiny's attempt at One Flag CTF) is hit or miss depending on which map you get and heavily promotes spawn and rift camping. Tiresome after a few matches.

TL;DR Bungie did it again with the half truth bait and switches. The only solid changes are the new strikes and the new interface. But don't be fooled, most "Quests" are glorified bounties, and most of those - especially after the main story - are little more than patrols and public events. The main story barely makes any sense, Oryx is a joke, the Dreadnaught is a bore. Enjoy the next year of Legendary Mark grinding so you can keep your light score maxxed out - which is really no different than year 1's system, just with a new spit shine.

For $40, I expected better. This is barely more than the content added by TDB alone. Save your money for any number of better games coming out this year. If you need to shoot other people in the face in competitive PVP and want to do it in space, wait for Battlefront.

TTK is more of the same from Bungie/Activision. I have only been this disgusted with a video game publisher once before and I've been around since Atari. Bungie sold their soul and allowed their vision of an Epic game/universe to be reduced to a confused mess. TTK makes it better but it is way too little, too late.

    - Depending on the player, the new story missions and Strikes can be very quick to complete. If you are a new player, you can start with the original story and the stories from the Dark Below and House of Wolves dlcs, which will add to the play time, but it is still a short campaign with a mediocre, unengaging story. If you are a fan of games with a long and/or interesting storyline, I would recommend skipping Destiny altogether.
    - Bungie hyped strike-exclusive armor in their Twitch live stream: Only 3 pieces of armor per class across all Strikes. Similarly, preorder bonuses for the game were weak, "Uncommon" tier weapons, which is disappointing.
    - More content/activities have been taken away from the game than was added; this is not an expansion of the game. If you are buying the Collectors edition, or any other edition which bundles TTK with the base game, TDB and HOW dlcs, you are not receiving your money's worth, because all content previous to TTK is irrelevant now. Similarly, if you are a PVP player, be forewarned that without the Taken King, your options for PVP game modes has been severely reduced from what existed only a few weeks ago. On another note, the PVP activities are poorly balanced, with some weapon types and character classes being vastly superior to the others. Bungie has done nearly nothing to alleviate these problems.
    - Poor communication: across all sources, Bungie has failed to adequately communicate with the players and community, often providing misleading teaser information that ends up being a negative change. This has been a problem since the beginning, and will continue for the forseeable future.
    - You will need to be very careful about how you order the DLCs: With the Taken King dlc, you will not be able to play it on another account on same PlayStation, XBox, etc., and all previous DLCs _must_ be downloaded by the same PSN ID/Xbox ID as Taken King. Numerous people have been reporting issues with this, without any response from Bungie.
    - Nolan North: minor annoyance, but the new voice actor for the Ghost (a little companion which tells the "story" of Destiny) is incredibly annoying.

    Thanks for reading :)

Same old stuff... although bungie has addressed many problems. This game is an absolute grind and the fact that this "expansion" is $40 is a joke. Should have been included in the main game, this is not a smart way for a business to keep fans.

With several outages happening during each week. I understand that updates are needed but there should be no need for this considering how much money they have put into this game and how much we have paid as gamers.

On top of the many updates and outages. The fact that one can't play offline is a terrible feature that should be changed. Also Bungie will kick you out of the middle of a game no matter where you're at without warning. Unless you subscribe to their twitter feed...

Overall with Destiny being an overall good game I would have given an 8. But since I can't play the game I paid money for because Bungie can't get their act together drops my overall score to a 3. Added points if the capability of playing offline is added. I'll give it another week or two and if things don't get better then I'm going to burn this game and never come back.

I'm very mad at this game's cash grab. Everything requires money to progress. Your build from 1yr is irrelevent. Bungie is nerfing/blocking a lot of things and forces you to pay to progress. I am retiring from this game. I'll probably come back 8yrs later when the game is close to complete to finish the story and see if the pricing is lowered.

I have all the expansions and still having fun with the game. But, the greedy strategy of Bungie is not gonna make me pay for the coming expansions.
An online game must be continuous. Limiting the before content for the players is unacceptable, huıge mistake. Disrespectful.
And new missions in old maps, seriously ??

*tin foil hat goes on* I guess being a top review that sheds a negative light on the game is worth removal on metacritic these days. So much for user feedback.

    This is sad indeed.

Thankfully, the internet caches this website so I could pull my review from the dead.

As an addition: piss off whoever deleted this review. You can't silence people legitimate opinions about a product. I'm reducing the score of TTK (which should be a 3/10) to a 2/10...

    Here's the original review:

    ---------

I used to be a huge fan of destiny, I played the game for over 900 hours since day 1. Hell I even played both the alpha and the beta.

    But, it's time to stop.

The business model promoted by Activision is a detriment to the gaming industry. It's already been confirmed that the story of Destiny was scrapped a year before release (check out the lawsuit of Marty O’Donnell vs Bungie if you don't believe me).

Activision has turned what should have been an excellent game, into a cash grab, designed to get players hooked with finely tuned drop rates so that they spend just enough time hunting for gear (which mostly sucks anyway) so that they can start it all over again with the next DLC.

The DLC is NOT WORTH THE PRICE. This is all content that was already seen by players since the original release of the game. The only reason it's getting shipped to you as DLC is because Activision's marketing team thought their customers were too stupid to understand the depth of systems and story that the original vision of Destiny had.

Now they're finally starting to give back what was already made over two years ago, but reworked to fit in the 'new' crap story. All for the small fee of $120 for year 1 players.

How can anyone with any sense stand by and accept this dick slap to the face? If you spend money on this crap and you're a year-1 player, you are a sheep. Activision is laughing at you. You do not think for yourself.

There are tonnes of games on the market that provide you with way more content, way better storytelling, more compelling systems, and better player interaction than Destiny. But idiots will still spend their money for one simple reason: addiction. This game is designed to be addictive, not fun, but addictive. All you're doing is chasing a carrot, looking for your next fix, which is a terrible loot drop that you probably will only use a handful of times. All to repeat the cycle again, until activision decides to lock you out of more content unless you pay them another $20-$40.

    Stop being a sheep.

The ONLY things going for Destiny are:

    - Raids
    - Gunplay / Combat

    That's it.

I don't want you to be an RPG, I buy RPG's for that so take the MMO garbage, throw it out, and let me shoot my guns. Also, the new supers for Titans and Warlocks lend themselves to you not even having to be a skilled player, just rock up in a room and start your 8 kill streak, while the hunter super is definitely a challenge that takes work and skill to acquire. Bungie, you suck. I'm done. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bungie does it again. They tell the consumer that its totally changing the game and it hasn't.

When they made the claim that it would be as much content as the original vanilla release, I was soo excited to see much needed change. The story mission addition..is 8 quests. It took me about 4 hours to get from 34-40. All the "new content" is either old content rehashed or entirely in the dreadnaught (other than the mission where you go to get the stealth drive.)

The taken Do look cool but there really isnt much to them if you're a) older then 12, or b) if you are remotely intelligent. The mission where you kill oryx is a joke.

The 2.0 update in preparation for the taken king made handcannon stability not even matter like hardlights range stat. Thorn needed to be adjusted, so did TLW but gimping every one and/or reducing magazine size..cmon bungie.

The dreadnaught although huge..is bland and everything looks the same the second time around. We got 4 planets in vanilla release. Now we have a big boring ship where most of the new content drags us to. The new strikes are simple if you know how to stay out of fire/ electricity or how to avoid mobs clearly charging you.

Rift seems fun..if you have a team. I played 15 games or so and if your team sucks you spend the whole time being rambo with the rift while everyone else is playing it like clash. Atleast they added the mercy rule.go bungie!

The change to how light works is kinda cool but I'm not a huge fan of the upgrade armor and weapons change. Atleast you have a halo sword now though*swish swish*. I Do appreciate that players who don't play much can attain max level because before it was heavily swayed towards players who can grind endlessly to get their legendaries/exotics.

For the people complaining about not being able to ascend their old legendaries and exotics...get over it. No game developer in their right mind is going to preemptively kill their new content. The lockout dilema on content Y1 players who haven't purchased ttk..that's crap. My hearts go out to you!

Some of the new pvp maps have a ton of access points for controlzones but there is also a ton of places to fall off the map which is just annoying.

The legendary expansion giving you both previous dlc's , ttk and destiny for 60 $ when year 1 players already payed 60 $ for destiny and 30$ for the season pass is definitely a slap in the face to the loyal

If you did not own Destiny (like those who sold their copy after the disappointment of the initial game, you now have to shell out another 60 dollars for "Destiny: The Taken King Legendary Edition", which includes the original game, the two initial expanions, and the titular Taken King expansion. The 60 dollar price point might be considered a steal if you did not own any of the game's parts. If you want the Taken King as just another expansion, it will cost you 40 dollars; double the price as the previous expansions, with slightly more content. Without the Taken King, you are capped at Level 34; not enough to wear any Exotics and most Legendaries, and most Crucible Faction gear is now off limits until Level 40.
Sporting few changes to the overall game (such as Nolan North, of Uncharted fame, as the new voice of the Ghost, new items and armor) with an added total of 4 hours of storytelling (not counting the already released expansions), 40 dollars is far too overpriced for something as meager as this. The 2.0 update, which was before the Taken King was even released, added more overall content than the actual expansion.
Destiny is a quick, clean game now; and it is leaving the slow players in the dust. And those players will not take this lightly.

For the first time, Destiny feels like it’s complete. It’s not perfect, far from it in fact, and I still can’t entirely disagree when they speak of the package itself as bad. But I’ve also been unable to put it down for the past month I’ve played it.
