It was my first Assassin and honestly, I was really enjoyed this game but after 50 hours had to force myself to finish it. If that is the best part of Assasin's, so rest of them must be really crap. Revievs don't lie. Recommended only to Assassin's fanboys

Very mediocre. Not good. Not bad. Gameplay isnt fun. Controls are not intuitive. Its just a game with no passion or much thought placed into it. Even very tacted on RPG elements. I rather they stuck to their older routine at what they were good at than forcing this upon us

I never finished the game. As much as fun and intrest I had in the story the gameplay made me to quit. The game repeats it self. Every mission ask you to save someone and carry them back to their home and these happens all over again. Furthermore because it takes place in ancient Egypt the Sahara was too much empt. Even with my horse the gameplay was slow and unpleasant.

Short & lazy review: Origins is a great game, and even though it bucks many of the Assassin's Creed traditions, the story, setting, scope, and surprising attention to detail combine to produce something to which I find myself eager to return.

The game is overall pretty good, except for the fact that it is a grind fest! Plot is short and is only artificially lengthened by the grind that is this game. It trys to be like Witcher 3 and fails horrendously. Never buy a Ubisoft game ever, is what I learned from playing this

+++ New fighting system looks fresh and some active skills from skill tree really refresh it in the course of the game.
+++ The world is huge and it gives you that sense of adventure, journey through the desert from one point to another.
+++ Two or three emotional moments in the story cinematics.
    Minuses.
--- You journey through this big world but encounter no new enemies, no new animals. Forts you capture get bigger in size and amount of enemies, but pose no new challenges.
--- You quickly understand tactics of finding chests, infiltrating forts and fighting enemies and this tactics does not change the whole game. As i said, no new enemies, no new threats, challenges doom you to doing all the process in repetitive way.
--- There is no visual change in the world from your actions, starting from no visual change in settlement where you killed a tyrant that sucked all resourses and instilled fear in the city and following forts that you capture killing all the soldiers and sometimes even helping rebels to capture it once again packed with Roman soldeirs and rebels in cages next time you drive by it. There is not a single region that you can free from oppression. You kill hundreds and they still roam the streets (much like Far Cry 5).
--- The highest difficulty still mostly relies on level comparison instead of actual difficulty.

Despite all the things I did not like in the game at this point I am still ready to say it is a good game if it wasn't for one crucial thing that I realized suddenly at the end of the campaign: there is next to none interesting story missions, close to the end there is an action packed war mission, but apart from it I can't remember a single quest. You either retrieve prisoner from the cage in the camp or crouch in a secured location and assassinate target. And there are no special target conditions, you just hide in the bushes, or grab the ledge and jump down on the enemy. That is it. I am afraid that I don't have time or desire to play games like this one anymore. It is not that I like story-centered games or don't like aesthetics, I just like varied games, games where there's some meaning to upgrading your equipment, exploration etc.

Speaking of the main quest line, the main story is mediocre at best, with a boring protagonist and even less interesting side characters. I can't find myself getting attached to these characters and what they go through as much as I was able to in past games. Getting interrupted periodically throughout the game to focus on the "modern day" story is also quite annoying and breaks immersion. The AI is often buggy and don't act as they should, especially the ones you are required to follow to complete certain quests. Customization is present, however it leaves little to be desired in my opinion. Overall, the game isn't bad, but it's definitely not one of the best Assassin's Creed installments. 7/10 at the most. A Brief, Complex, and Honest Review--

To be completely honest...this game is not that good at all.

First of all, let me say that I am just now playing this game. A full year and a half after it was initially released...yet it is still broken. I have logged around 50 hrs so far and I have experienced 2 complete game freezes for no reason where I hard to do a hard reset of the Xbox and countless glitches/bugs, dropped frame rates, textures popping in and out, and cut scene animation/angle issues. This should not be happening at all a year and a half after the game has been released with several patches and updates having also been released since then as well. Incredibly disappointing from that aspect.

Next, let's move on to the fact that Ubisoft has completely abandoned any attempt to have a coherent and intriguing storyline. Gone are the days of the original AC1 - Revelations games in which they actually cared about a narrative and gave us an interesting story to follow along with well-developed characters to lead said story like Desmond and Lucy. Now they have given us a very confusing, barely coherent, and loosely connected in Animus story that is just terrible, mixed in with a "what is the point of this?" modern day story line with new character Layla Hassan which, again, is terrible.

Then there is the new combat system/style which is just...meh. It's not bad...but it's not great either. Ubisoft is just trying to capitalize on the Dark Souls-esque style of attack, dodge/block/parry, and repeat. It’s just not AC. The worst part for me was that there were several times when I would be travelling from location to location and would be attacked by a group a soldiers/rebels/bandits who would be the same level as me, and yet they wouuld would kill me almost instantly with arrows. I wouldn’t have a chance to try and engage in combat with them or pull out my bow and shoot them. They would ride up on their horses, surround me, shoot me with 4 or 5 arrows and I would be dead within a matter of seconds, no chance of escape. Very frustrating to have happen every other time you are trying to ride to a new location that you can’t fast travel to yet.

Lastly, the time period is just terrible. When you make and promote a game to be set in ancient Egypt, then it should be set in, ya know…ancient Egypt…during the reign of the Pharaohs at the height of Egypt’s empire, dominance, and splendor. Instead what you get is a horribly bastardized Ptolemaic Greco-Roman Egypt that can’t make up it’s mind which it wants to be.

The only positive thing to say about the game are its visuals. It looks absolutely stunning to play it on Xbox One or PS4 with a 4K tv. When it isn’t glitching or crashing on you that is…

In closing, it truly pains me to write such a negative review of this game. I have played every game in the AC series since the first one came out when I was in high school. Some of my most fond gaming memories come from the original 4 or 5 games in the series. Sadly though, like the Egypt portrayed in this game, the height of the dominance, glory, and splendor of the AC empire has long since diminished…

Best AC game since AC2 in my opinion (have not yet played Odyssey though). Some of the voice acting and story writing may be admittedly weak, but that is far outweighed by the game's strong points. Textures, shading and framerate are great and help the feeling of immersion, although the same cannot really be said for the NPC's. Gameplay and combat are vastly improved from Syndicate and Rogue, resulting in far fewer "f--k this game!" moments during combat and parkour. I give the storyline a 6.5/10 after about 20 hours in. Some of the cutscenes are actually pretty good. Heck, i might actually finish this one.

You HAVE to do an unreal amount of side missions to be able to progress the main story thanks to the new leveling system. You also have to keep upgrading your weapons. Even if you are a higher level, lower level weapons wont be good enough. I have tried to progress faster but its impossible. No, you are stuck doing the same side mission over and over and over and over and over and over before you can do ONE main quest. This is the MOST GRINDY AC I have ever played and its the biggest turn off. I am at level 28 but I will not be playing the end as I dont feel like spending 20 more hours running the same side quest before I can do the main.

The combat is ok but if you are up against a heavy hitter that is a couple levels higher than you, one or two hits can mean game over. The fighting mechanics are completely different and I am not a big fan.

Overall, the story is pretty captivating and Aya's ship missions are my favorite. But the EXTREME repetitive nature of the mandatory side missions that take ENTIRELY TOO LONG are the biggest turn off. I will not finish the game and I will have to watch gameplay footage of Odyssey before I begin to contemplate purchasing that one as well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There are many wonderful things about this game, and as a software developer myself, I am in awe of a team that can make such a large complex software project work so well. It's a spectacularly good effort. Having said that though, I feel the design of the game as a game lacks quite a lot, and decreased my enjoyment. In this review I will go into some detail about the parts that I enjoyed and those that I did not.

I have never played any Assassin's Creed game before, so I didn't bring many preconceived ideas. I did expect there would be skulking in shadows and assassination. I also admit that I am not a skilful gamer, but I expect that most games are within my range of capabilities. When I played Horizon: Zero Dawn, I chose an easy mode, and then the game was so easy as to be boring, so I played Origins on Normal (with exceptions as will be noted below).

First, the positives. The world is beautiful! I completely love the way the Origins team has taken what is known about Ancient Egypt and reconstructed it and painted in nice colours. It's just wonderful. I love that there are so many different human models, and so many different actions they do, and so many different environments they interact with.

The quests are generally good. As I find main quests in games to be the worst, I prefer to do side quests. However the side quests were strongly related to the main quest, and tended to expand on the story, rather than being some random radiant nonsense. I feel the side quests did a great job of explaining what was happening in the world to the people who weren't the famous people. I also loved the scroll puzzles, and sorta like the revenge quests even though they were a bit out of place.

I loved the transport! In most games with horses, the horses are just too hard to control to bother with (looking at you, Breath of the Wild) so I either run places or fast travel. In Origins I regularly summoned my camel, or stole a felucca, or used whatever was at hand. The vehicles were a success.

I loved the birds! I loved how when you walk into a flock of herons, they flew away, and you could count on them doing it for other humans as well. I would very much like to see a stealth game which placed more emphasis on interactions with the world - skittish animals, creaking stairs, visible shadows, audible grunts - rather than just "push the stealthy button".

Which brings me to the bits I didn't like. The stealthy button didn't work most of the time! So many times I would poke my head into somewhere to have a look at what was happening, and be instantly noticed and end up in a melee. I adjusted from taking stealth-based abilities to taking melee ones just so I could keep up. Being stealthy didn't seem to be a viable option.

Furthermore, Bayek's parkour didn't help. The guy can't walk in a straight line, he's forever leaping up on something. He can't use a ladder to save himself, preferring to jump up onto a wall or a box, and he can't go down. I spent a good proportion of my time just trying to get Bayek go where I wanted him instead of somewhere stupid. It's really hard to sneak around fort when any intrusion messes with your movement.

The combat was okayish, but the lock-on functionality was way too eager to unlock itself. When you're badly wounded and staggering, unable to hit anyone, and Bayek insists on standing in a brazier rather than fighting or escaping, the game really is at its worst. And then while you're pressing all the buttons, the game decides you want to take a photo. NO! World's stupidest feature!

Much has been said about the game's level system, which was about the worst level system I've ever played. For an open world game, there's a too narrow window of things to do that are viable and interesting at your level.

Picking up loot doesn't work very well. There is click loot and hold loot, and you have to watch to see which the game is currently offering you. Very annoying. Then what you picked up vanishes so quickly you probably missed it anyway. Which is OK, because nothing you pick up is of much interest. The weapons are the most interesting, and they're so strongly tied to the level system that they're never of much interest.

And finally, the main quest. Like HZD and BotW and even Skyrim, the game loves its main quest and throws all of its tricks at you while you do it, by which I mean painful boss fights and dull cut scenes. Those are why I avoid the main quests. I like Investigation areas and Eradication areas, I don't need a fight I can't win to make the game interesting. Act IV of Origins was painfully dull, and I tried to avoid it.

It distresses me that game designers can make lovely and interesting things that I will do for hours, yet make the meaningful parts of their story so dull that I wander off to the kitchen instead. Origins may be a new direction for the AC franchise, but I wish in that regard they had chosen to lead rather than follow.

Ubisoft has taken the word "boring game" to a new level. A beautiful world and a so empty game. Hundrends of quests without meaning, a marker chasing game. Fast pacing crap for kids. You will never learn the very big map cause the game doesn't help you to. Last good assassin's creed was the black flag one. Pass it for your wallet's and time's sake.

Nice appropach toward RPG,; Ubisoft did learn a lesson and tried to make quests richer in little stories but here still something remains to be done and polished. For the final better feeling of the game these things should be improved: 1. better npcs models 2. better facial animations 3. Better little stories of the quest givers and 4. More charismatic characters / npcs. Otherwise a great game. Had a lot of fun with it. Expand

A long time ago, I was playing Assassin's Creed 1 for a couple of hours and Black Flag for a couple of more hours, but faded off from both due to boredom. After all this positive reviews, stating that this is kind of a refresh to the series, I thought I'd give it another try - maybe there is some joy in it - like I had with 150 hours in Witcher 3 or 70 hours with Horizon. But sadly: No, not - at - all. If you're like me and never got warm with the Ubisoft open worlds (the only game I have finished was Far Cry 3): This game has no different feeling to it than the others. In a nutshell:
    >> great graphics, although less detail work in comparison to other open world games
    >> awful storytelling
    >> bad character development and introduction (a grown man behaving like a 15 year old greenhorn)
    >> clunky and boring combat system
    >> lacking content in comparison to the size of the world
    >> no authentic feeling of ancient Egypt
    >> bugs
    >> Ubisoft-Club ingame promo

So, in conclusio: I will not finish the game too soon or maybe not at all. It is still entertaining for maybe 1-2 hours per week, but after 12 hours in the game nothing interesting happened and (I'm sorry) I can't even deal with this evil face old kid main character.

Things like skill trees and crafting systems have been slipping their way into Assassin's Creed for a while now. Origins however is the first game in the series to fully embrace the RPG genre. Boldly redefining the franchise while taking us back to the earliest days of the Brotherhood.

As interested as I was in seeing how the Assassins got their start, I didn't care about the protagonist Bayek, his wife Aya, or even his quest to avenge his son's death. This is in part because the game picks up a year after he already set out to destroy the Order, giving it a bit of a non-linear quality. I got more out of the side-quests and historical setting. A lot of effort went into making the characters you come across in both the main plot and the mini side-stories scattered across the world feel real and memorable. The best part of the narrative though is definitely the origin story of the Creed. Seeing how all of these different things we've come to associate with the series over the years came to be is a lot of fun.

On the gameplay side of things the biggest change that can be found is the combat system. No longer are fights a dance of well-timed parries and counters. Instead we get something much more free-flowing with a mix of light and heavy attacks not unlike a SoulsBorne game. A wide variety of weapon types allow you to experiment with different playstyles and find one that best suits you. This is true of ranged combat as well. The new bow and arrows are probably my favorite addition to the series. Being able to put some distance between you and your foes can be life-saving. Pulling off headshots never gets old. Especially when you dive further into the skill trees and get crazy new abilities like the power to control arrows mid-flight.

Origins is a massive game that's filled with things to do. Admittedly you're just completing the same handful of tasks over and over again, but the action manages to stay fresh due to how diverse the environments are. Each section of the map is unique. Affectinf things like enemy patrol patterns and the kind of terrain you'll maneuver through. Entering a new zone for the first time and getting caught up in it's beauty and how different it was from everywhere else I had previously explored was enough to keep me going until I got that platinum trophy.

The new modern day segments return to a format similar to that of when Desmond was still around. They introduce a new protagonist for this side of things, but man is she annoying. Like Rebecca and Shaun levels of bad. Not much happens in the few brief excursions outside of the Animus, but it's nice to see signs of Ubisoft potentially doing something significant with this part of the series again.

Origins marks the first real evolution for Assassin's Creed since introducing multiplayer back in 2012. With a better story and more variety across the board the next entry could be talked about as one of the best RPGs of all time. Some excellent groundwork has been laid here, making the franchise feel fresher than it has in years.

Anybody reading this should note that I am a casual gamer and that, as a casual gamer, this game fulfilled my needs perfectly. If you are a 'serious' gamer or a 'pro' gamer then you may find it a little too easy, or a little lacking in depth in terms of inventories and upgrading. For me I loved the ease at which I could glide into the action combined with the decent, though not overwhelming, depth. Onto the game.

    Positives:

    - Beautiful visuals
    - Interesting characters and story line
    - Good amount of depth without being too tedious or time-consuming
    - Excellent controls. Really the control system, for both movement and combat, is superbly realised. When you go back to other games after playing this you will wonder why they cannot be as intuitive as Origins.
    - Large open world with lots to do.
    - It is, at its core, a fun game to play.
-The expansions are also really well realised, in particular the Valley of the Pharaohs which adds a hell of a lot of additional content.

    Negatives:

    - Perhaps lacking in a bit of depth in the upgrading systems (though for me personally I didn't mind that)
    - Some repetitive missions.
    - AI could be better in certain situations.
    - I personally hate when the games story line fades out and it cuts back to the present time (in game). I find it breaks the narrative, and the suspension of reality, when playing. I know they won't, as it is a staple of the AC universe, but I wish they'd just throw that part out.
    - The boss fights tend to be quite one-dimensional and rarely provide much of a challenge.

An excellent game for me, I would highly recommend it.

As usual, beautiful setting in Ptolemaic Egypt and a fairly good story. The Stealth is consistent, parkour fine (preferred Unity's system personally), and the combat is better than previous entries; Dark souls-esque but with some annoyances eg. Bayek seems to have the tiniest reach with his weapons, and the dodging/blocking attacks is slower than it could be. Customisation via weapons etc are a positive, and there's a wide variety of attacks relating to the different weapons used.

There's an abundance of content, including side missions with more depth than previous entries, showing the developers put more effort into this game, but the story-telling and writing aren't very memorable, nor compelling. Due to the levelling system, you need to complete much of these side stuff to continue on the main quest, which can get tedious and boring. Bayek (main character) is likeable and his story is based on a revenge hunt-them-down trope, with some hiccups on the road. You often play as his wife who is again, interesting. Yet, there is something rather cringey about this angry woman assassin in 49BC going around killing off famous militaristic figures and overpowering muscular Greek and Roman soldiers. I assume the writers believe such an adaptation a requirement in meeting present day political correctness standards. I mean, the second you load up the game Ubisoft hits you with a disclaimer of how 'this work of fiction was designed, developed, and produced by a multicultural team of various beliefs, sexual orientations and gender identities.' Wow, thanks virtuous Ubisoft. You've anticipated the review criteria of Polygon! lol

Egipt in the times of Cleopatra is one of the best-presented places and times in series history. Full of details and climate, vast and beautiful. A big plus is also how a story is presented. Cut-scenes are very well directed (major improvement here) and stories of our targets are memorable. The beginning of the Brotherhood is very well told as well. First Bayek's assassination with the hidden blade has given me goosebumps. AC: Origins has also many improvements when it comes to gameplay mechanics. Combat can be demanding and dynamic and I really like how the characters movement has been redesigned. However, there is still something missing that stops me from giving this game 9/10. Side missions lack emotion and, especially at the end, they feel like a fetch-quests. There are also flaws in equip system which feels a little too simple (I am talking to you no-stat outfits and horses). To put it all together - I had a fun time playing this game and it is one of the best entries in the series, but I still liked Horizon: Zero Dawn and Witcher 3 more. Expand

But, graphics are not enough to make a game great. The story has some intriguing elements but I found myself skipping cutscenes and Aya in particular I found to be an annoying character with her obstinate obedience but that may be my subjectivity.

The gameplay and missions are where it gets interesting. They have attempted to move away from mechanics found in earlier AC games but it's like the mechanics are holding on by their fingertips. As a game about assassins, it should not be surprising that most missions seem to involve travelling to a location and assassinating a target, but this does not impede the onset of boredom. Furthermore, the level cap of 40 deterred me from doing any more missions than I had to. I see they raised this cap with DLC, but I really don't like paying for that kind of thing since I'm already tired of the game itself.

Despite an attempt at rejuvenating the series, AC: Origins still relies on familiar concepts and mechanics such as collecting items and open-worlds full of inane side quests as well as crafting and looting. It was the locations that probably intrigued me most and the impressive visuals made me want to continue exploring. I did get over 40 hours out of the game, so it's well worth it if you can get a good price; just don't expect to be blown away.

The one saving grace to this game is the open world. it's pretty incredible to look at. Too bad the game mechanics didn't match the attention to detail that the world was paid.

One last point - the move to a more RPG focused game hurt more than helped. It was half-assed when compared to actual RPG's like The Witcher or Skyrim. Overall, very disappointed with the end product here.

The big new fighting system is mostly a failure, better than the old ones, but just horrible. My thoughts playing this were always that the main focus of the devs were the animations looking cool and not the fighting actually being fun. Or even working properly. Most of the time you're not fighting the enemy but rather the camera.
The RPG mechanic is barely noticable, it mainly influences which missions you can and can't do so it does sort of guide you through the side missions and regions. THere's nothings really interesting in the equipment mechanics, just always switch to the better one when you get it. Really no point to this even existing.
This entire game shows that the Devs really shouldn't be trying anything new. This is just a half assed effort by an incompetent team that's more suited to putting out the same game every year than actually creating something. Ubisoft really has gone downhill.

The story and characters are wonderful as well, keeping my interest until the end.
The game is slightly brought down by some awkward glitches and mechanics here and there, as well as the overabundance of side quests and unlockables which feels very overwhelming at times.
In the end though, this is probably the best game in the Assassin's Creed franchise, with so much beautiful stuff to see and do, and so much detail that it hurts. History nerds (such as myself) will also find so much to enjoy.

The music does a good job to immerse you in each situation except when you are taking down a fort.
Now on to the bad things.... The stealth and combat is THE worst in any game i have played in this series. And i can not understand why people praise it! I usually run away from combat because its so damn boring to play. The missions are tedious and uninteresting, the story doesn't really tell you much of the "origins " of the creed until much, much, much later.
Overall this is a disappointing for me as a Assassins creed fan. And i hope they get back to the old stealth and cool fighting moves like the old games. Unfortunately the upcoming game Odyssey has the same faults it does not look like a assassins creed game at all.

The facial expressions are not perfect but still very good, the atmospherical details are stunning, like brick walls, grass, sand been blowing through caves, sun blinding light that covers you when exiting a building. I didnt mention any obvious bugs like clipping, render popping or frame drops which is amazing because a lot games suffer on this end.

Voice acting is well made and covers the whole game which is to me something decently appealing. The voice seem to fit pretty good what they need to represent. Fighting, soundtrack and ambient are also really decent. I enjoy it a lot on my home cinema setup.

Controls and combat got some irritating beef which made me hold back on this game but honestly I dont get why. I still feel pretty noob-ish on console controls sometimes but AC:O has a well enough mix. Easy one button mashing which needs to be switched for shield carrying enemies and some bow action, mixed with some dodging. I personally dont need more and I like the basic simplicity of it.

The inventory and crafting system is well made. You need to grind a bit for the materials but it is okay. You can get it by hunting animals, robbing material transfers or jumping on ships looting them. Another way is just by exploring and looting the environment or ship wrecks in the sea (which looks amazing!!). I didnt experience a carry limit. Everything you gain can be dissembled in your inventory by one click to gain raw materials or can be sold on the market. Items have different looks, feels and rarity. I like this a lot give the open world feeling a deeper rpg part.

Sneaky sneaky can still be part of the game if you want to be. Assassinating is still huge if you want it to be huge and also plain slashing your way through is also mostly possibly. It is fair that the game provides a solution for everyone.

Questing and progression are decent to me. You need to invest quite some time. This could be hard for casuals but is exactly what the majority of core gamers might be looking for. The side quests feel very appealing to me. There your casual fighting, delivering, revenging etc. stuff but you also need to investigate murders, help on a farm or carry injured ppl back home. I find this is a really decent and interesting mix which I havent found in a game so far.

Open world is a key aspect in this game and very well implement. Synchronized spots can be used for fast travel. You can (auto)-ride by horse or splish-splosh your way on boats. Mediocre distances can be well taken by foot. I feel that the world is HUGE but its decently made so I dont need to waste amounts of time by just wandering around to another spot if I dont want to.

Assassins Creed was very disappointing to me for ages but AC:O honestly sealed the deal for me. You can invest money for cosmetics (which are well made) and the world feels fun. I dropped maybe 15-20 hr in the game and I want to keep going. The gold edition which sells at sale times around 60-70 is worth it so far.

    Have fun!

    In the longrun update:
After playing through most of the bonus stuff and DLCs I reduced my opinion from 10 to 9. The DLCs are well made and offer a great addition to the game although I myself felt a lack of variety in gameplay and some AI bugs were driving me nuts. I felt that the Gold Edition was too much for me. If I would ve bought only the main game it would ve been the perfect time/price ratio. Also the story progression overall lacked a bit in the DLCs.

    So I would rate:
    - Sole main game 9 to 10
    - Main game plus DLCs 8 to 9

I still felt the game so worthy after putting aroung 70hrs in it that I think 9 is a fair rating for the bundle.

This game is NOT anything like The Witcher 3. The sidequests in AC Origins are uninspired, ending up in generic fetch or kill quests, with zero choice and consequence. There are no branching dialog with multiple narrative options. Side quests and main quests are all linear. Based on what it marketed itself to be (saying how Witcher 3 was their inspiration), I was expecting a deep RPG to revolutionize the AC series, but there's no roleplaying at all. Bayek is very stiff and wooden, and poorly written. I don't feel connected to him as I was with Lincoln Clay from Mafia 3 who was also on a revenge mission. This, I surmised, is mainly due to the poor writing and disjointed pace of the narrative as a whole. It feels like they're trying to squeeze in so many things all at once. Also, if you've watched shows like HBO's Rome, or Spartacus or have any knowledge of ancient history, the main plot is so predictable. For me, the mark of a good game is if I never want it to end. With Origins however, I kept checking my playtime when I boot up the game and was just going through the motions and just waiting for the credits to roll. I gave my best to try to get invested in the sidequests but there are no memorable characters at all! All the best RPGs I've ever played had great companions and sidequests that add to those relationships. Games like Dragon Age, Witcher, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, are ao good, they extend my interest beyond the games into books, comics, youtube lore videos etc. Heck even the non-RPG linear action games like Uncharted, Last of Us, Tomb Raider had me connect with the main protagonist. Overall, I would say that the plot in Origins is a major disappointment.

As an RPG, it fails. Having hundreds of loot and different weapons does not make a RPG. The loot system is more similar to Destiny/Diablo/Borderlands. It's very stats based. Armor is purely cosmetic in Origins. I ended up using the same armor and weapons that can e upgraded to current level for the whole game.

Combat is boring button mashing. Charge your heavy attack, dodge and whack. That's the only thing I do for the whole game including bosses, with the occasional use of bow and arrow. Nothing like Bloodborne or even Witcher 3, whose combat I've read from other reviews were supposed to be it's weak point but I found enjoyable due to it's variety of stances and magic use. You can roleplay as a fire/force/shield/traps swordsman and change your playstyle. Not here in Origins.

Stealth is a joke here. If you enjoy stealth games like MGSV, Alien Isolation, Deus Ex, Dishonored, even Ubisoft's own Wildlands, stealth in Origins is so unsatisfying and not immersive. Mainly due to the eagle mechanics which allows you to see through walls once the enemies are tagged. If you try to play without using the eagle, Bayek's weird movements and inability to go prone resulted in me being detected so many times. I love stealth games, but playing stealth here is unsatisfying.

The major positive about this game is it's graphics and world design. Egypt feels authentic. The desert and pyramids blew me away, although I was pretty disappointed with the trees in this game, they were very low quality. The water though is bordering on next gen lol.

I had high hopes for Origins because Ghost Recon Wildlands put my faith back in Ubi after enjoying AC1&2 and then feeling jaded with the yearly release and recycling of their game systems. I guess Wildlands was just an anomaly. Ubi to me is still a good publisher, but not a legendary one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassin's Creed Origins is a fun game. It is a game, for me, that I can come back and play to pass up time, however, the story and side quest are very lacking. It is boring story, and silly. I laugh at what was supposed to be serious moments into the game because it is so ridiculous and done so poorly at executing the vibe that it was trying to get. For instance, when you accidentally killed your son in the flashback. That was one of the poorest executed sad moment in story telling that I've seen in a really long time. Also, the combat is a bit buggy and can be very laggy when executing commands. It is trying to be a bloodborne/dark souls combat style by making try and dodge and roll all over the place in conflict, and it isn't done right. Anyways, despite its major flaw in telling an engaging story and occasional lacking gameplay, it is still an over all fun game that has a lot to do. The world is pretty cool and reminds me of far cry by the random animals that can kill you. I enjoy the hunting and crafting and upgrading aspect of the game. You can mold your character to play how you want him to play like an rpg. It has fun moments, it has dull moments, but it isn't an unbearable game. I am glad I got it on sale for 50% off, because if I did not, I would be pretty upset paying for this game that is from a AAA developer. If you do not have this game, waiting for a sale will feel more justifiable solution. Expand

This installment of the AC series has left me incredibly underwhelmed, AC have been experimenting with the core mechanics for the Assassins Creed franchise and they have not innovated at all, in exchange for a bustling city or the open seas where there was always something a stones throw away, I was crossing areas with only one outpost or vast deserts with nothing else around.

Gameplay was refined from the previous installments but no where near perfected, fights were clunky and sometimes your protagonist would not stand a chance were in previous games it would be down to preparation and planning, assassinations have always been instant multiple times I have been robbed out of satisfaction of playing it sensibly and sneaking to get to my target.

That now brings us to my biggest pet peeve, the leveling system. Granted you can level in a way to suit your play style but the game insists on a certain way to play on missions and its rarely sneaking. Multiple times I have been caught off guard by their missions from stealth to combat and have not leveled up enough to stand a chance and have been forced to grind out the experience points rather then play through for the story.

From that point, The story is the main thing that does this game justice, from dealing with all the bugs (game breaking bugs I may add) I wanted to know how it progresses and what happened next, Ubisoft have got better at writing these games but need to experiment with its formula.

A welcome change to the series. Let’s be honest, it needed it. Hopefully this is just the start of the revamp and Ubisoft keep tweaking and making worthwhile changes to the old stale creed formula.

I enjoyed every minute within AC:O and even bought the DLCs. It's a beautiful world, I just wanted to stay in longer (I cleared all objectives within the base game and the first DLC...the last DLC will have to wait until I finished God of War).
The combat is great – especially compared to former titles – but I especially liked to stealthy approach. That way, each outpost was a cool puzzle

The story was okay, but I can't really remember much of it. One big exception is the story between Bayek and Aya...but I won't spoil.
Some of the side quests were much more memorable and interesting than the main quests. It never really felt tedious or repetitive. But as I generally like Ubi games, I'm more forgiving, I guess.
Even the discovery mode is working really well and can entertain (and maybe even teach) for a while.
A solid 9, if you are generally into those kinds of games. A better, more memorable main story would be appreciated, but I can live with it.

Game with life like graphic, huge and varied open world, improved and engaging battle system and all other things I missed in this franchise...and yet after few hours I felt like I tried everything that the game has to offer and now I see that I really did. Game with lots of quests and activities, using like 5 types of schemes over and over again. Main quests are same as side quests, only with cut-scenes. And those differences between important and routine was for me the reason I liked assassins creed, there were repetitive side missions, but when main quest came, I felt it and wanted to do best for hero sakes, not in this case. Even without knowing the franchise I believe the game just feel like colourful puzzles put together with duck tape. Despite unattractive activities I found battle system really interesting but sadly after a while boring and skills not important for survival.

Those are my only complains, sadly huge ones. Game as whole feels "Meh" and even beautiful graphic and fascinating locations cant change the fact, I completed this game taking short-cutes so I could move it from Unfinished to Forget-ably Finished

Assassin's Creed: Origins is the best game in the series, but it's a mediocre action RPG at its core. In this sense, it both succeeds and fails at being a much-needed franchise shakeup.

Origins is the newest installment in rather worn out series and a much appreciated and needed refresh. New combat and graphically fantastic environment with tons of content will gave you some nice moments. The game is not a blast but it is a proof that AC is back on the right track again, for now.

With a beautiful world you'll repeatedly die for and lethal toys to play with, Assassin's Creed Origins finally delivers the game you always wanted from the series. Brilliant. [Christmas 2017, p.87]
