Enemy AI is weak, and there is tons of bugs literally everywhere, characters stuck in animation loops, combat animations skipping erratically, and the eagle does not feel like a bird at all, but like some strange hovercraft/drone. I appreciate the attempt to innovate the combat, but this cake needed way more time in the oven. Expand

This game feels like Far Cry and Assassin's Creed had a baby, but instead of being a cute baby its a baby only a mother could love. It doesnt even feel like an Assassin's Creed game to me. Ill hold off judgment of anything but mixed for now but i got disappointed real quick

Very mediocre. Not good. Not bad. Gameplay isnt fun. Controls are not intuitive. Its just a game with no passion or much thought placed into it. Even very tacted on RPG elements. I rather they stuck to their older routine at what they were good at than forcing this upon us

This game is NOT anything like The Witcher 3. The sidequests in AC Origins are uninspired, ending up in generic fetch or kill quests, with zero choice and consequence. There are no branching dialog with multiple narrative options. Side quests and main quests are all linear. Based on what it marketed itself to be (saying how Witcher 3 was their inspiration), I was expecting a deep RPG to revolutionize the AC series, but there's no roleplaying at all. Bayek is very stiff and wooden, and poorly written. I don't feel connected to him as I was with Lincoln Clay from Mafia 3 who was also on a revenge mission. This, I surmised, is mainly due to the poor writing and disjointed pace of the narrative as a whole. It feels like they're trying to squeeze in so many things all at once. Also, if you've watched shows like HBO's Rome, or Spartacus or have any knowledge of ancient history, the main plot is so predictable. For me, the mark of a good game is if I never want it to end. With Origins however, I kept checking my playtime when I boot up the game and was just going through the motions and just waiting for the credits to roll. I gave my best to try to get invested in the sidequests but there are no memorable characters at all! All the best RPGs I've ever played had great companions and sidequests that add to those relationships. Games like Dragon Age, Witcher, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, are ao good, they extend my interest beyond the games into books, comics, youtube lore videos etc. Heck even the non-RPG linear action games like Uncharted, Last of Us, Tomb Raider had me connect with the main protagonist. Overall, I would say that the plot in Origins is a major disappointment.

As an RPG, it fails. Having hundreds of loot and different weapons does not make a RPG. The loot system is more similar to Destiny/Diablo/Borderlands. It's very stats based. Armor is purely cosmetic in Origins. I ended up using the same armor and weapons that can e upgraded to current level for the whole game.

Combat is boring button mashing. Charge your heavy attack, dodge and whack. That's the only thing I do for the whole game including bosses, with the occasional use of bow and arrow. Nothing like Bloodborne or even Witcher 3, whose combat I've read from other reviews were supposed to be it's weak point but I found enjoyable due to it's variety of stances and magic use. You can roleplay as a fire/force/shield/traps swordsman and change your playstyle. Not here in Origins.

Stealth is a joke here. If you enjoy stealth games like MGSV, Alien Isolation, Deus Ex, Dishonored, even Ubisoft's own Wildlands, stealth in Origins is so unsatisfying and not immersive. Mainly due to the eagle mechanics which allows you to see through walls once the enemies are tagged. If you try to play without using the eagle, Bayek's weird movements and inability to go prone resulted in me being detected so many times. I love stealth games, but playing stealth here is unsatisfying.

The major positive about this game is it's graphics and world design. Egypt feels authentic. The desert and pyramids blew me away, although I was pretty disappointed with the trees in this game, they were very low quality. The water though is bordering on next gen lol.

I had high hopes for Origins because Ghost Recon Wildlands put my faith back in Ubi after enjoying AC1&2 and then feeling jaded with the yearly release and recycling of their game systems. I guess Wildlands was just an anomaly. Ubi to me is still a good publisher, but not a legendary one.

Positive aspect is graphic, all those ancient views, pyramids, cities, temples, sculptures and probably best water ingame.

And those differences between important and routine was for me the reason I liked assassins creed, there were repetitive side missions, but when main quest came, I felt it and wanted to do best for hero sakes, not in this case. Even without knowing the franchise I believe the game just feel like colourful puzzles put together with duck tape. Despite unattractive activities I found battle system really interesting but sadly after a while boring and skills not important for survival.

Those are my only complains, sadly huge ones. Game as whole feels "Meh" and even beautiful graphic and fascinating locations cant change the fact, I completed this game taking short-cutes so I could move it from Unfinished to Forget-ably Finished

This is mainly due too the levelling system which although helpful does limit the players ability to free roam until they are around level 30 unless, you enjoy a challenge as most of the animals you will find can instantly kill you until you are at least level 11. The game has interesting music and great visuals, but that is pretty much it, some of the game can be really fun and there are great moments. If you are planning to get this game don't unless you believe you can stick out the boring grind of levelling up because once you are high enough level the game gets better as you can go anywhere you want and do anything you want with out death hanging over you shoulder constantly. However as the game only gets going towards the end the fun parts are over quickly. I don't recommend this game it will retire on your shelf far quicker than you think. Expand

A long time ago, I was playing Assassin's Creed 1 for a couple of hours and Black Flag for a couple of more hours, but faded off from both due to boredom. After all this positive reviews, stating that this is kind of a refresh to the series, I thought I'd give it another try - maybe there is some joy in it - like I had with 150 hours in Witcher 3 or 70 hours with Horizon. But sadly: No, not - at - all. If you're like me and never got warm with the Ubisoft open worlds (the only game I have finished was Far Cry 3): This game has no different feeling to it than the others. In a nutshell:
    >> great graphics, although less detail work in comparison to other open world games
    >> awful storytelling
    >> bad character development and introduction (a grown man behaving like a 15 year old greenhorn)
    >> clunky and boring combat system
    >> lacking content in comparison to the size of the world
    >> no authentic feeling of ancient Egypt
    >> bugs
    >> Ubisoft-Club ingame promo

So, in conclusio: I will not finish the game too soon or maybe not at all. It is still entertaining for maybe 1-2 hours per week, but after 12 hours in the game nothing interesting happened and (I'm sorry) I can't even deal with this evil face old kid main character.

This is essientially AC: The Skyrim version. You are forced to skip elements of the game because you're character is too weak to tackle said temple or fort. Where as the old games made you more powerful through acquiring upgrades to equipment but never impeded your progress, here you become stronger simply by collecting XP and anything above your own level is instant death. So simply playing the game using stealth and action is not enough in the new and improved AC. Come across a foe with a read skull of death icon above their head and you better run. It makes no sense whatsoever. I cleared out a temple in an area that had bandits at my level. Not far away I discovered another fort with the same exact generic bandits but you can't stealth kill them for the arbitrary reason that they are at too high a level. Instead they reverse the move and then proceed to one hit insta kill you while your attacks do nothing. Why? Because this generic "Bandit Leader" is level 20 but his twin brother you just killed not far away was only level 5. LOL! I say a knife or an arrow to the head should pretty much be an instant takedown. Enemies should be harder because they have better protection like say helmets to protect from arrows and they are better at detecting you as you sneak.

Everything has a level, including equipment, but you can't equip something that is too much higher than you're own level. Confusing? Yes, that spear looks exactly like the one you have equipped, but you can't use it because it's level 10, and you are only level 5 for instance. It's just dumb and does not fit the rest of the gameplay aspects of AC. You have a huge world to explore but are restricted to only interacting with enemies who are equal or of lesser class than you. It makes the game world completely disjointed as you'll discover cool things and then have to pass up exploring because the enemies are twice your strength or the quest level is twice your level. It turns the whole game into an unnecessary grind.

Oh and the upgrade grind is here as well which at this point is a ubisoft staple of gameplay. You'll need x amount of leather and y amount of copper to craft z upgrade. It's a never ending push to collect materials for tiny increments of improvement to your gear. What a slog.

On top of that, combat is just not very good but at least the stealth is as good as previous AC games. It's hard to give a bad score to this game because it really is entertaining as long as you follow the beaten path and the Egyptian landscape looks fantastic. The Pyramids tower in the distance and climbing around feels great. The story is also ok I guess. It's a shame they decided to lock everything behind a completely unnecessary grind wall that you can speed up with extra money. That's right, you can buy boosts all day and you'll be level 40 in about 5 minutes and have all legend gear. Just spend another 50 bucks and the you're faced with zero gameplay restrictions since you're at the top level. The game even sends you messages while you're playing that a quick xp boost is just a click away. It's just awful what micro-transactions have done to gaming in general. This game suffers in that regard as is evident by the disjointed leveling system which serves only one purpose: impede your progress. Shame, but ultimately still a solid game once you reach a respectable xp level.

Listen, they've removed the optional challenges (my favourite feature of AC games), ALL collectibles, most side activities like optional assassinations and things like improving your hamlet in AC3 or playing with your fleet in AC4. And they have replaced it with....nothing. I guess people were fed up with collectibles and side activities but when you remove it all and replace it with nothing....it's boring. It really is.

ACO is flashy and beautiful and pulls you in for a few hours but then you'll realize you're doing just two things all over again - side quests and looting lairs (animal nests, forts, villas etc.) Over and over again. There isn't anything else to do. All the interesting set pieces and closed assassination areas like in Syndicate are gone too.

Sure there are oodles of side quests but they are usually about "go to X, talk to Y, kill ABC and bring back the stolen stuff". Plus the story is not very exciting, the beginnings of the Assassins are kindda humdrum. And the characters are boring too. Bayek is grouchy and uncharismatic and Aya is smart and strong but also about as warm and likeable as a granite block. The villains are just one big grey blob and the villain alpha dog looks like a beta neckbeard. There's nothing quirky or interesting or distinctive in the characters or the writing, it's all just one big, smooth and featureless mass product.

I know most people don't like the modern storyline about gods but at least it made the game unique. I've always thought the problem with the things people got fed up with over the 10 or so games - the optional challenges, the collectibles, the side activities, the modern storyline - was not that they were there but that they were half heartedly implemented. In ACO instead of improving them Ubisoft simply took them away.

I had a blast in the first 10 hours, then lost all interest. I just rushed the end. I never thought I'll say it but ACO is probably the most boring AC game since the first one, despite the attractive setting and potential for the metastory. Even AC3 was more interesting, at least there was Haytham. In it's boringness and staleness ACO is on par with Revelations. Looking back at it I feel like going back to Black Flag or even Syndicate. I actually liked Syndicate. Sigh.

Positives? The combat is fine, certainly more engaging then in previous games (although I liked the Syndicate combat too). And the world is beautiful and just gigantic. Too bad they haven't filled it up with much.

It took Ubisoft 2 years to produce Origins. And, what did we get?

A super polished equivalent to watching paint dry.

In truth, Origins is everything they were told they needed to do (fix the bugs, make the Animus experience clean, GRAPHICS!!) and the rest of the package be dammed. The Ubisoft staples are all here; game mechanics found in other IP's they own are here, as are most other assets from older AC games as well as new ones found in For Honor for example (combat feels like a tone down version of it). Then there are the same tired tropes from older AC games like collecting things, opening up the map, going to areas marked with something (for example they now are a ?) for minor benefits, helping wooden NPC's do a trivial thing and finally a Main mission system that leads to a abandoned narrative they only have here because had they cut the Meta-narrative (like you lot all want for some reason) they legitimately couldn't continue calling it Assassin's Creed anymore. Maybe "Microtransaction Virtual Reality Simulator Game" would be apropos.

And for those claiming Ubisoft took a good long time to develop this, I got news for you: They had this done last year. Complete and ready to ship in the tried and true process they have had for nearly the entirety of this franchise. You had an Assassin's Creed title last year; it was the movie, and this game literally takes place right after the events of the movie. So if you think they were taking their time to make an amazing game that rights the wrongs of the last few titles...I have this bridge in Brooklyn to sell you...

The game is nice to look at, Nearly Horizon Zero Dawn levels of beauty, what is missing is an engrossing narrative; either in the animus or outside of it. On 4K with the now implemented HDR support makes it even better, but looks are not everything.

As a long time fan of this series (like i'd suspect most here are), I have to question why I bought this? Is it out of loyalty to the series? Is it hope that they will get back to what actually matters to this series: the meta plot and a rational outcome? I don't think they will now. They have milked this narrative since AC3 and it doesn't look like they will EVER take the next step.

I write this with sadness, but this might be my final going into the AC universe. AC3 was the end of the series for me, the rest...are just filler; in particular Origins. Not a good starting off point for new players, not worth your time if you are a veteran. There is more than a video game than game play and graphics, it needs a reason to play it. It needs something the player can invest in. It needs an engaging story. This title is the perfect example of this and precisely what not to do.

The line has ended, the series is done. I say Assassin's Creed Origins is a pass, for about everyone.

Update-12/1/17 This game is nothing but a giant, boring collect-o-thon slog. The beautiful world they created here has become a stale existence as all locals meld into the same visuals over and over. I don't care about places anymore, all I do is travel from zone to zone in my level, go to each place and "unlock" the unexplored parts for . I'm almost level 40 and about half the world is unlocked! The story is lost to me and as it the plot or pacing.

I am firmly finished with Assassin's Creed if this is how they are going to make future titles.

    Origins is Torture.

Which brings me to my next point, it's clunky. The combat is some of the worst in the series. I get it they redesigned the battle system, and yay! Hooray for them-but if you're looking for a challenge, well you'll get one because the buttons don't work, the collision system is like something out of a crappy WWE game. Even free running is less fun. All around movement fail.

Hiding in bushes..."press triangle to assassinate". ok. Pressing, Pressing. I'm pressing the triangle button now! Hello? Next thing you know the ultra stupid guard is right on top of me as I'm doing a dance in a damn bush. He says, HEY! Aaaaand now I've got ALL the guards on me. Awesome game. Don't even get me started on pressing triangle to chain assassinate.

The game has some positives: I don't know what other negative reviewers are talking about, the game LOOKS beautiful, as long as it's not frozen. One guy said there's too much brown...WTF? The colors are gorgeous, the Nile, both above and below the surface looks and moves incredibly.

The voice acting is pretty good. The story is a bit weak. I never, ever felt connected to the assassin's nor to Bayek as a character. And as usual modern times gameplay is just the worst, and does nothing to further the story unless you want to read through 100 emails. Ubisoft. Why in the holy hell would I want to pop in your fresh new assassin's creed game, and spend any amount of time, literally checking emails. Am I at work or am I playing a video game?

My two sense. Worth a red box, don't buy it.

This installment of the AC series has left me incredibly underwhelmed, AC have been experimenting with the core mechanics for the Assassins Creed franchise and they have not innovated at all, in exchange for a bustling city or the open seas where there was always something a stones throw away, I was crossing areas with only one outpost or vast deserts with nothing else around.

Gameplay was refined from the previous installments but no where near perfected, fights were clunky and sometimes your protagonist would not stand a chance were in previous games it would be down to preparation and planning, assassinations have always been instant multiple times I have been robbed out of satisfaction of playing it sensibly and sneaking to get to my target.

That now brings us to my biggest pet peeve, the leveling system. Granted you can level in a way to suit your play style but the game insists on a certain way to play on missions and its rarely sneaking. Multiple times I have been caught off guard by their missions from stealth to combat and have not leveled up enough to stand a chance and have been forced to grind out the experience points rather then play through for the story.

From that point, The story is the main thing that does this game justice, from dealing with all the bugs (game breaking bugs I may add) I wanted to know how it progresses and what happened next, Ubisoft have got better at writing these games but need to experiment with its formula.

Micro transactions absolutely ruin an otherwise playable game. I'm not even sure what the story is and I've been playing for about 10 hours. I stopped caring.

It has redeeming qualities but I can't get over the microtransactions.

I'm not really a assassins creed fan, and have't played since "black flag". It's a lot of improvements since then, and I like it a lot. The reason I rate this 6, is because of the microtransactions in a full price single player games. Yes, you can buy ability points. If you don't care about the microtransactions it's a solid 9/10.

ACO simply feels incomplete and lackluster in every way possible. Poor movement animations throughout for both main characters and AI, awfully slow prologue, story is meh, world feels more robotic and lifeless than immersive, bad lip-syncing, clunky combat, and boring missions. The graphics can be a hit or miss but overall positive. Though this games falls short in nearly every way, I canACO simply feels incomplete and lackluster in every way possible. A fresh addition to the franchise I had played recent assassin's creed games and just simply felt bored. This game however did the opposite. Decent character development and nice side-characters with memorable and surprising twists did the game very well. The RPG aspect was nice as well. They've clearly taken some direction from the recent Witcher game; following it's success.

Decent character development and nice side-characters with memorable and surprising twists did the game very well. The RPG aspect was nice as well. They've clearly taken some direction from the recent Witcher game; following it's success.

I felt the skill tree was nice and varied along with having a good arsenal of weapons that can be upgraded and changed based on your own playstyle. The micro-transactions... I felt weren't as substantial as other games as I never felt forced to purchase any extra things for the game... I simply went through it and enjoyed it. The side quests didn't feel repetitive as other games have made the mistake of doing and always kept you interested. Moreover the actual gameplay was very satisfying to play with after intially getting used to it., I found myself taking down captains and other standard enemies a lot easier which slightly took away a fun and challenging aspect of the game even when increasing the difficulty, however you feel that you have earned this power after all the time you have put into the game. Another great thing I enjoyed in the game is the free roam, being able to work on the extra abilities and upgrading Bayek's health and damage by exploring, intercepting bandits and collecting hides was fun, and I actually found myself saying "Just one more thing, actually just this last thing" more times than I care to admit. The Phylakes addition into the game was great as you did feel on edge, and their initial power is scary and you genuinely feel like you have to avoid them to stay alive. Moreover, the you cannot simply run through a huge bandit camp, assassinate your target and leave, you have to strategically scale the outskirts of a castle, taking out guards or stealthily make your way through camps and loot them, gaining more powerful and satisfying rewards and gear. Also, the ability to upgrade your weapons to your level cap as you progress was a nice implementation as I found a sword I really liked and wanted to keep without it becoming weak as I leveled.

The replay-ability of this game I feel would die out after a while and would indeed become very 'samey' after either finishing or playing the game for a while, as most enemies and camps are the same, and the loot you get at level 40 cap becomes old after gaining legendary gear. A couple of crashes here and there and absolutely stunning visuals made for a great game, and a memorable experience.

I'm not sure why they called this an Assassin's Creed game. My favorite aspects of the franchise, which have been present in every AC title I've ever played, are just not present here.

In Origins the only game loops are happen when you explicitly pick up a mission (be it main mission or side quest). I feel like I'm at work, constantly looking for someone to give me orders.

Also, all the other AC titles had this neat feature where you could basically push forward on the joystick and your character will do this aesthetically pleasing free run over buildings, or climb a building, or whatnot. That doesn't really happen here.

I don't object to the new leveling system or tech tree. But the fact that I can't just run around and be amazed at my characters agility, and have a nice little 10 minute game loops, really disappoints me.

Let's get the good out of the way. It looks beautiful and plays well. It's fun. Now for the bad. The story is terrible, the characters lack any depth, and are terribly inconsistent. The tone and pacing is just so bad. The voice acting is good for the most part but they aren't good enough to save the dialogue.

As someone who have played AC since AC1. This game is a terrible disappointment. Let me get the positives out of the way first, the environment in this game looks beautiful, the map is huge. Let me get the positives out of the way first, the environment in this game looks beautiful, the map is huge. But that's about the only positive that I can think of for this game. Let's start with the bad, the revamped battle system is complete sht. They tried to copy Witcher 3's battle system, which is arguably the worst part of Witcher 3. It's slow, unresponsive, and generally not very fun to get into fights. The biggest issue with the fighting system is this, the enemies can dash backwards, you can't dash forward. So that means you have to walk forward slowly to attack, while the enemies can hit you at that time. So that made most of the melee weapons useless (other than as a finisher when the enemies are stunned). Did they even test play this system? How the f did it even get past testing? So for most of the game I resort to using bow and arrow. They also nerfed the hidden blade, now it'll only do maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the health of the mini bosses. In AC1 if you can time it perfectly you can one hit kill the final boss with a hidden blade counter! Now that's obviously too OP, but there's no reason to nerf the hidden blade this much. The leveling and experience gain also have issues. The exp you gain for kill enemies are very low, that's fine by itself. But they have made the game very level based, any enemies more than 3 levels higher you basically can't kill. So now I have to grind for exp. I'm sure this bs is put into the game to encourage people to buy their Time Savers Pack. I usually don't even mind grinding if the grinding feels natural, but this feels like they deliberately force you to grind (by nerfing the hidden blade) so you'll have to grind for levels. If you don't want to grind then you'll have to buy microtransactions. I think this is the last AC game for me. No more of this bs. I'll be waiting for the big gaming crash of these big publishers. When someone else can buy these IPs for cheap after they crash, they might start to make some good games again. Expand

Assassin's Creed: Origins is the best game in the series, but it's a mediocre action RPG at its core. In this sense, it both succeeds and fails at being a much-needed franchise shakeup.

Origins is the newest installment in rather worn out series and a much appreciated and needed refresh. New combat and graphically fantastic environment with tons of content will gave you some nice moments. The game is not a blast but it is a proof that AC is back on the right track again, for now.

With a beautiful world you'll repeatedly die for and lethal toys to play with, Assassin's Creed Origins finally delivers the game you always wanted from the series. Brilliant. [Christmas 2017, p.87]
