I cannot understand the bad reviews for this game, it is much better than Origins in almost every aspect. It mixes it up with Ship play and combat, the maps bigger, there's more stuff to do, the levelling system is better, there's a mercenary system, there's more loot. In general it's just a better game than Origins but gets worse reviews.

Now back to business. If I had not been told the name of the game, I would not have guessed that this is an assassin's creed. Where is a cloak and hood? Are we an assassin or some nameless warrior? Many canonical attributes have been removed from the game.

Previously, you could kill any enemy. Now, if the difference is 2-3 levels, then the battle turns into dull rifts. Now you need to farm, farm, farm to get a level and a new weapon. Bravo! And if you are too lazy, then you can buy in-game items for real money. Can you smell it? It smells like free-2-play game for 60$.

Yes naval battles are back and they are super similar to Black Flag's mechanics. Boarding works the same, shooting works the same, although its arrows instead of cannons, and upgrading your ship has a game play loop to it that is really satisfying. You can even customize the look. The biggest change to the Ship mechanic would be the Lieutenants. Lieutenants add perks to the ship like plus damage, or plus armor, etc. They also have uses when boarding a ship. They fight right alongside you. Like gear these Lieutenants range from common to legendary status. Speaking of gear. If you were like me and wished Origins had armor that wasn't just cosmetic, or wanted a change from the status quo upgrading the same armor you have the entire game then Odyssey is your jam. Now armor pieces consist of 5 types. Head, chest, legs, arms, and waist. Each piece has their perks and range from common, to legendary. Weapons are still the same from Origins. Sword, double swords, staffs, maces, axes, spears, etc. However bows have changed and work nothing like origins. Now you only carry one at all times and upgrade perks to make it do stuff like the predator bow did when you followed a shot to the target. Or shoot 4 arrows out of time with the Multiple shot perk. And you can FINALLY craft arrows. That was a much welcome change for me. Listen, Odyssey deserves a chance. If you are one of those people saying "this isn't an Assassin's Creed game!" Ok then it's not now play it it is still good enough to warrant your time and money. The value alone is exemplary. Giving you tons more hours of play than any previous AC games. All I am asking is that you keep an open mind, and before you completely write this game off just try it. You might be pleasantly surprised. My one and only gripe is the heavy push at micro-transactions. You will get to a point where you have to grind for hours to get to the level whatever the Next story mission is at, and it's quite clear what Ubisolft's intentions are. To get you to purchase Helix credits so that you can get XP boosters, better gear, etc. It isn't all bad though. This kinda forced me to explore the world looking for locations to complete, and I ended up getting WAY better gear for doing so. It just throws the pacing off quite heavily. Ok, ok I'm done now. Just try it before ya criticize it. Expand

The game artificially extends its duration by making the player waste time doing secondary missions that are boring and feel more like homework than an actual game. This is of course to encourage microtransactions, as well as to keep players online for longer than they would, if they could just play the history.
NO MORE PAY TO PROGRESS!! Here's my zero.

So Assassin's Creed Odyssey is basically Origins with Greek skin and MUCH, MUCH more micro transactions. Grind is unbearable and you can see right away that it's done on purpose to force you to buy digital money for exp boosters and such. I couldn't believe my eyes... i want my money back for the first time with AC game. Game looks pretty but that's about all positives i can think of.

I'm giving it so low score only because of scandalous content gating in this game: if you don't buy a booster from UBI Store, you have to grind between levels to reach next story quest. And the grind is soooo boring, soooo repetitive that I can't even believe it. WHO at Ubisoft decided to gutter this - quite honestly fine game - only to earn a few more bucks... It's beyond me.

Just trying to find where your next objective is - even in guided mode - is a difficult task. The story is very disjointed, the graphics - I know I already mentioned them, but I have to say again - are simply terrible. It feels like they knew the game was no good, but had to get it out the door so they released it anyway. My recommendation: RedBox it first. I have played most of the AC games since the original, and while they sometimes seem a bit repetitive, I've like all of the ones I have played. This one might be the series jumping the shark. I simply cannot imagine myself playing another AC after this mess. Expand

I have to write a positive review because of all the trolls that bombard this game with negative reviews. The game is very similar to origins, but that's not bad if you like the RPG genre. The story is very good and the mechanics of the game are better than its predecessor.

Every time i climb a mountain and see some grand city in the distance, i am just blown away. Also to those saying the isn't "Assassin's Creed" because there aren't assassins, maybe you should play a bit longer... they may not be calling themselves "Assassins", but the bloodline is there. I've come to realize that AC fans just don't know what they want and ruin the series with reviews that don't make any sense or accurately depict what is going on. They ruined the series once after unity by complaining about a small portion of graphical errors that easily got patched. So Ubi went another direction by dumbing down graphics and mechanics for a yearly release that almost ended the series. Ubi comes out with a fresh take for a stagnating series and adds some open world RPG elements that were not perfect in origins but I step in the right direction for the future of the game. Biggest issue there was story. Now, Ubi implements some Witched esque elements (which makes sense for a now open world series w RPG elements as the Witcher is a prime example for this genre) and fans lose their minds over aspects of the game like 'grinding" or "not really AC". Well, if the fans would have supported Ubi instead of lost their minds over small issues earlier in the series Ubi would not have had to experience a crisis of identity or format and arrive at this game. This is far from the original gameplay and story that made AC famous but that does not make it a bad game. It plays great, its vast, the story isn't bad (though the voice acting budget might need some love), and its a step in the right direction. Don't let the hate keep you from enjoying an intensive and well developed game that isn't perfect. 9/10 for me. Room to improve. Expand

I don't know where to begin since this game is a complete and utter mess. The entire game is focused on selling microtransactions and every part of gameplay suffers from this because it's all created to make you want to buy them. Not to mention the constant FPS drops, loading while walking, loading while talking, loading...while doing everything always along with the bugs/glitches.

I've played about 25 hours so-far and never really felt like I was being hindered by the lack of EXP/Drachme boosts, maybe that will feel worse later but we'll see. So-far though the microtransactions feel completely optional.

In Origins I felt like the RPG mechanics were really hamfisted, I didn't like them at all. However in Odyssey they've really refined them to make them feel like a more natural part of the game. The eagle-bearer may well be one of the best written protagonists since Ezio, Kassandra especially is just exceptionally well written. She doesn't fall into any of the tropes that make a female protagonist feel forced, she feels completely human.

The choice system they put in doesn't seem frivolous either, there's one section early in the game that seems inconspicuous but can end up having a big effect on an an entire town. The game is **** chok full of little bits of detail as well, things you probably wouldn't even think of. IE the allies of the people you kill in the streets or whatever can be seen disposing of the dead, a town that can get sick because of your actions goes from healthy to morbidly sick, fatigued and vomiting to dead. It's great.

My only issue is that it doesn't feel like it has much connection to the franchise as a whole, but the game is honestly so much fun I don't really care.

So the only issues I really have is the abundance of microtransactions and the lack of a real connection to the franchise as a whole outside of the meta-story. Other than that, the game is fantastic and frankly all these hyper negative reviews are over-exaggerating like hell.

The easiest way to describe it is the lovechild of Witcher 3 and Shadow of War, skinned in Ancient Greece. Nothing more nothing less.

    The Witcher 3 Parts.
The movement, boats, horses, and even the World map and its icons looks and feels a lot like Witcher 3. which sadly Witcher 3 did successfully back in 2015. The only thing that Odyssey did better on that was having one BIG world map instead of separate loading zones and 2018 visuals to suit.

    The Shadow of War Parts.
It has basically cloned the nemesis system from Shadow of War, without the actual nemesis. You have the strongholds, captains, recruits etc. Some of the character abilities, the teleport spear for example shows even more why its a clone.

    The Good
it has chosen 2 very great games (especially Witcher) to clone, making it a perfect marriage of them. If you like them , you like this. Simple.

    The Neutral
Don't expect an Assassins Creed game....The Stealth gameplay is watered down to favour the greater combat approach. Some may like this, may not, it adds more depth to the game overall. But don't expect to have that classic Stealth experience.

its an RPG. something I personally liked, having more customisation and loot. But it feels shallow at times. Not as in depth as typical RPG'S on the loot front. I feel in the effort to become a fully fledged RPG and balanced the games, Ranged, Stealth and Combat play styles its become a sort of "Jack of all trades, master of none" game.

    The Bad
its lost its uniqueness and originality of being an Assassins Creed game, It should of been it's own standalone Ubisoft IP.

    Overall 7/10
As a video game its great, lots to see and do, and very pretty albeit a bit buggy in places (which could just be launch issues that will be fixed). But sadly it lacks what it was meant to be an assassins creed game.

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
