I'm a huge fan of the combat in AC Origin and if you feel the same DO NOT BUY THIS!!!. The combat in Odyssey is clunky, unpolished, and feels like they took several steps back from the previous title. I really tried to be positive, but this game is complete garbage. I'm not happy with how poorly this game turned out and wanted to voice my opinion on it.

I've not played as Assassins Creed game for quite a few years but got a free code for this and thought I'd give it a go. I'm quite shocked by how far the series has devolved into a mobile-like microtransaction fest design to wrangle as much money from the player as possible.

In short, the game is packed to the gills with artificial grind. There is a light RPG levelling system which lets the player upgrade their character as they progress through the game. Each game mission has a recommended level the player should be at in order to succeed. And by recommended I mean absolutely necessary as higher level enemies will deal enough damage to kill the player character in one or two hits.

The weird thing is that the XP needed to gain levels accumulates very slowly and you are faced with higher level enemies and missions right from the start. So how are you supposed to level up? Luckily Ubisoft has 'Time Saver' add ons to cut out the grind and increase XP gained, and all you need to do is part with your real world money. In a full priced game.

And why call them 'Time-Savers'? This isn't a job, its an entertainment product, you should want to spend time with it.

Everything in the game seems designed to push the player into buying these XP boosters as the player is constantly presented with high level enemies, missions, equipment and abilities. So playing without the boosters feels like playing a free mobile game with ads enabled.

And after all the bugging the player to spend real money the game itself is fairly unengaging and bland. The majority of missions are; 1 - Go to this place, 2 - Kill these people, 3 - Pick up this item , 4 - Return item to person. If you want to do that for 30 hours then this is the game for you.

The portrayal of ancient Greece is fairly well done (even though most of the research seems to have been watching the movie '300'' several times) and the light RPG elements are a nice addition. If you're interested in the setting then maybe wait to pick it up on sale.

But the game is designed to psychologically batter you into paying real money for a game you've already bought. Even if the game was one of the best ever made you have the right as a consumer to be able to switch off and enjoy the thing you've invested in without fighting the constant encouragement to part with yet more money. Go re-watch Jason and the Argonauts for the millionth time, you'll enjoy it a lot more than this.

That's not an Assassin's Creed game anymore. If I wanted to play an RPG I play The Witcher 3, wich is a better option by far. They change to much their game, and not always in a better way... And I don't even want to talk about that **** combat system! I'm sad that AC is just a shadow of what it used to be.

Assassins Greed Odyssey is by far one of the worst entries on the franchise full of bad game design and poor story telling. Let´s start with the dialog and story (NO SPOILERS), so the dialogs system tries to be like witcher 3 dialog but unfortunantley falls flat, in one mission I tried calming down a little girl and appeard a dialog for it but what my Alexios said was a brutally opinion and harmed the poor girl´s feelings and this type of dialogs are spread in all the game side quests and main missions. The flashbacks are cheesy with no impact at all, and the romance system is so boring, it doesn´t requiered attetion to the character you trying to romance, just press the romance of option and BAM you just got a hot date with a boring no meaningful character, were in other games you need to actually put effort in doing it.
Now the combat: Origins did a great job evolving AC combat and it was simple, functonal, with a functional lock-system. But un AC Odyssey is a complete mess, the parry requieres two buttons to work LB+RB which if you ask me is pointless, when in other games like witcher 3, dark souls, origins, etc., you only press one button for the parry and it worked so good because hey just requieres pressing one simple button. When you hold LB for a special attack or parry, your character is completley vulnerable and thanks to the delay of buttons in the game, you´ll end up getting hit, (NOTE: Im playing this game on nightmare mode), the lock system is crazy, with a small move the joystick you´ll change the lock to multiple enemies, a cool feature on ORIGINS was when you were close to a structure, plant, fence, etc., you could see through those things so you wouldn´t miss the character and concencrete fully on the battle, when AC Odyssey doesn´t have that helpful feature and last but not least the special attacks are broken, specially the spartan kick, you know your game has problems when people abuse the special attacks and that makes the game unchallenging when they´re charge.
Difficulty: like I said, Im playing on nightmare mode. As someone who loves a challenge, the difficulty on AC is not challenging but absurd, when Im fighting against the legedary animals Im so concentrated on them that when all they call more animals to aid the "boss" my enjoyment is completely ruin by a bad game design wich is that, when you are fighting a boss is suppose to be between you and the boss and not their minions+boss and the problems mentioned before made the battles more frustrating and the same goes to captains, ORIGINS nightmare mode made it fair and challenging. -OH JUST LOWER THE DIFFICULTY DOWN, yeah like lowering down the difficulty will fix the problems of game design in the game.
    Special features:
Bounty: the bounty was a create concept, but poorly introduced. Mercenaries appeared out of nowhere next to you after 5 seconds into the bounty, they´re crazy powerful or weak mercenaries, they aren´t divieded by zones. The phylakitais on ORIGINS worked so much better, all of them were powerful but fair and divided by zones.
System Isolation: I hate the new armor/lvl/combat system, they isolate the stealth, combat and ranged combat. When I tried doing my playthrough stealthy I was completley rekt, why? Simple, my assassin armor was weak, and if I used the hunter or warrior armor, they´ll decreased my stealth damage, at the en I gave up on my stealth playthrough and went combat only which is a shame since I love my stealth missions and playthrough. The bows are completley useless even with full hunter armor. Games like MGSV, origins, metro, etc. Reward you for stealth and aren´t isolated by a stupid and painful system isolation.
Animations: thanks to the poorly lock system, the mess of a combat system, and bad game desing, the animations paid a huge price specially on the combat, they are so many bad animations for the enemies that I usually miss a parry thanks the to poorly made animations, some enemies will hit you with an invisible attack that connected with you even 2mts away. And the climbing, I always get stuck on various parts of the maps thanks to a poorly placed polygon or bad programming.
Enemies: the female enemies with spears are crazy powerful, they´ll hit you non-stop even if you hit them they wont flinch at all, the big ones are easy but with creazy powerful attacks, but mostly easy, the one handed sword are fast for its own good, and then the shield ones thata are like mountain with a crazy defense or weak defense. There is no balance and so many other enemies that are more broken than FOR HONOR at launch.
I could keep going and say more about the problems about this game, but Im running out of characters. So at the end, DO NOT HEAR THE GAME JOURNALIST AND GAME CRITIQUES LIKE IGN AND GAMESTOP, they were paid to said good things about this game (like always). After this awful expirience Im never buying a game from ubisoft quebec ever again.

But sadly the game bases its game play on these micrtransactions and they cast a shadow on this review as a whole. It is basically Assassins Creed Origins but located in ancient Greece rather than Ptolemaic Egypt. But even in Origins the mechanics weren't as grind heavy as there were at least ways to gather resource quickly in the form of attacking shipments of resources and taking them. Here there is no such mechanic and finding resources in order to upgrade your armor and weapons will be one of the hardest things you will have to do in this game. Of course the reason behind this grind is that they sell resource kits filled with material required to upgrade in their online store. in some cases I had armor in my sets that were 20 levels behind my current cap at level 50 because at that level the amount of resources required to upgrade were as much as 600 to 700 just for one upgrade and as a reference the most I have gotten from an ore is 10. So these mechanics alone are enough to drive my score down to a 5. But everything in combination heavily outweighs any of the good that is to be seen in this game. The amount of detail in this game is breathtaking and it seems Ubisoft really did their research when looking up how life in Greece really was in this time period. instead of plain white marble structures everything is painted and beautifully filled with color much like at the time period. And Greek pronunciations and dialect are a welcome change from the whitewashed hockey British accents you see in most film set in ancient Greece. Now while being historically authentic to culture and aesthetic doesn't mean they got everything right. For the love of god where is the hoplite warfare that was indicative of the time period. Why are there so many Spartan ships. Why do they make this war seem like it lasted a couple of weeks when it was really 30 years. Why is the plague played down so little when it was really the main reason Athens lost the conflict. Why is this spartan soldier fighting with two maces who did it. Not having his shield alone was enough for him to lose his spartan citizenship.
This games combat is enjoyable just like origins and most of it was copy and pasted from origins to fit this game. And specific bows aren't necessary for specific actions they were added onto the skill tree for this game instead which is a welcome change of pace for bow combat.
Characters are also interesting and engaging. Though much of your interaction with them is forced rather than something that is sought out. As stated above this game is incredibly grindy. So in order to progress through the main story you a forced to do these sidequests rather than wanting to do them on your own. Use The Witcher 3 on how you should base secondary mission element into your game. So even in character development microtransations rear their ugly face into this game. Although I did enjoy my discussions with Sokrates and Alkibiades though I will never understand why they made him so effeminate. But if you want to hear me ramble and say the **** word more times than can be counted check out my review on my youtube channel.

It does everything to try to make you buy microtransactions, which don't belong in single player games. The game gives you so little XP for quests further contributing to the feeling of grind. The game is a chore to get throught and at the end the game doesn't even have a satysfying ending no matter which choices you pick(not like they even have any real effect). 3) Gameplay is still somewhat fun BUT the world is immense and it becomes highly repetitive and boring after 3 regions.

Overall, AC: Odyssey was really disappointing for me, I had big expectations. If you find it at, let’s say 75% discount, buy it and spend 2 days to complete the game. Otherwise, don’t bother.

The RPG mechanics don’t fit this saga, combat is just silly and cartoony and the atmosphere is just too politically correct. It’s a boring and grindy game and the end of an era.

*WARNING: Very late and long-winded rant review that focuses on the negatives primarily!**

It is a sad sight to see a giant like Assassin's Creed lose its identity and sense of direction. Assassin's Creed thrived while in its action/adventure story style but, after years of milking the series for what it's worth year after year, the developers decided to make things fresh by almost completely stripping it of its identity. For critics, reviewers, and casual players, this is a welcomed change. But for the real fans, it is reasonable to see this as a tragedy. The linear, focused version of storytelling is replaced by your cooky cutter open dialog choice, gender selection, and multiple endings, which would be fine if that fit into Assassin's Creeds established lore and formula. The reason why the other installments didn't have these RPG elements are because of the Animus, a machine that lets people experience memories of ancestors through their DNA. Realistically, this would mean you sit through the memories like you would a linear story, not mend and change the memories to your liking like you would with a RPGs. The RPG formula just doesn't work with the storytelling of the game.

The present-day story has been weak for a long time now, ever since the end of Desomd Mile's story. Granted, the present day story from the first Assassin's Creed to Assassin's Creed 3 has had its fault. But, even with those faults, the story of Desmond Miles was interesting, had its high moments, and held a lot of insight into the world of Assassin's Creed. With better writing and care, the present day story could've been something truly great. But by comparison, Desmond Mile's story was far better than what's been spit out over the past few games and the implementation of Layla Hassan hasn't been a real improvement. People actually praise the fact that she and her present-day story is hardly in the game, which is disappointing because it shows that the writers can't seem to get the present-day aspect of their overall story right. In this installment, they also seem to forget the driving force and reason for these games; the Assassins and the Templars. These two major fighting forces are pretty much non-existent throughout the game, which is disappointing considering there are a lot of areas of both sides that still need to be fleshed out but are sadly ignored.

But to get off the subject of story, there are a few things to point out in terms of gameplay. The combat is a joke. Movement and animation are janky and cartoonish, stealth assassinations are a little outlandish for stealth assassinations, and with the implementation of RPG elements, there are these giants, goofy numbers that pop up with every attack. This a far cry from what the combat used to be. Sure, in terms of challenge and variety, it is better compared to the counter-spamming combat system of older installments. But, with what it gains, it loses the charm and interest that came with the smooth combat and cinematic movement and executions. It felt as though you were playing as an experienced fighter and assassin, not as a janky cartoon character on cocaine. There is just no charm to the combat as it sits now.

Also, what is the point of freerunning at this point? The most iconic part of the series where you could get from place to place in a fast and fashionable manner, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, wall to wall, has been belittled to jumping and climbing over rocks, trees, and a handful of buildings that are just close enough to jump between so you feel some sort of relevance out of it.

The Assassin's Creed formula along with the identity has changed so much to the point where it is no longer is an Assassin's Creed game. Rather than improving the series's gameplay and story shortcomings while still keeping it true to its roots, Ubisoft seems to think it's better to just throw out everything that made Assassin's Creed great and turn it into an unrecognizable game to follow the fad of everything being an RPG and to make a profit off the series name. As a totally separate game, Assassin's Creed Odyssey would be a great game and probably have a lot better scoring overall. But, being that it is an Assassin's Creed game, it should be judged as so. For hardcore and veteran players, it should be sad to see a game so loved lose so much of itself just so that companies can continue to milk it year after year. It has seriously lost the heart and soul that made it great.

    - massive map that does not need loading screens between islands
Cons - assassination damage builds are completely useless - assassination button being mapped the same as the interact button is probably the dumbest idea I have seen in a long time - brings back the Origins style assassinations, where if anybody is two levels higher than you, pressing the assassination button

    - the story is forgettable
    - the side stories are completely forgettable
    - the spongy enemies are back and it is even worse now, as some of the Mercenaries that come after you can take five minutes of straight DPS so you are going to be fighting a single enemy for about ten minutes, if you include dodging and strafing
    - the microtransactions went from bad to abysmal as every part of progression is either a disgusting grind or pay five dollars for 150%XP boost for two hours

Want to hear the best joke the series ever told? Assassination damage builds in AC Odyssey. The level based assassinations are back and they are as dumb as ever. Upon pressing the assassination button an animation plays. In this animation, you could see your character stab someone sixty times then set them on fire then poison them then let a lion tear them to shreds and then drop a nuke on them. And they get hit for five percent of their max health.

But wait, this game has melee damage builds, ranged damage builds and assassination damage builds. Surely if I build assassination damage I can kill people with my assassinations. Yeah, no. In fact you are screwing yourself over completely if you build like that.

I mean, you will do fifteen percent of their health instead of five but guess what? They are still not dead. And now they alerted the whole camp. So you either have to fight or run. Oh you want to fight? Dummy you built assassination damage not melee damage. So the enemies that are spongy for the melee damage builds are a nightmare for you. Now instead of just the Mercenaries taking five minutes each, all of the enemies will take years off your life.

Now I am going to make a controversial statement. Ready? Interact button should be an interact button. OK? Let me repeat that. Interact button should be an interact button. Do you know what I don't want to do? I don't want to run up to an NPC and jump instead of talking to them. I don't want to crouch instead of talking to them. I don't want to use an item instead of talking to them. And I certainly do not want to track a nearby non-essential NPC and put my knife through their neck. Of course not killing them but now they are hostile as well as the quest giver.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make the Interact Button/Assasination Button combo on the controller should be fired on the spot. Like how stupid are you?

Ok now to the fun part, the microtransactions. When this game drew ire for the amount of ridiculous monetization they came out defending it with the most hilarious lie I have ever seen. The Time Savers are there for adults that don't have time to grind video games. I mean you could do that… or you could just not make the game a grindfest scraping for every bit of progression in order to be tempted into the store. But thanks Ubisoft, thanks for balancing the game just right and thinking about the hard working people.

Damn this game just pisses me off. I 100% it without ever purchasing a single thing from the store and damn, there are few games that left me emptier than this one. This thing is a hollow shell of what the greater AC series used to be. It is not all bad, as there are moments where I had some fun with the game and I clearly had to enjoy some of it to 100% it but wow. The hours put into this title feel like wasted time which is not a feeling I should get after finishing a game.

Why those damned naval battles? Misfortune of poorly made game mode, without sense or reason! Whoever invented these maritime missions in the game deserves to receive cold pizza for life! And more: realism and immersion are necessary, but Alexios' balls detailed when you dive with him is a detail of extreme bad taste!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mediocre at best. With supper repetitive quest you have to grind out to level up enough to push the story along. All so they can micro you into buying exp boosts. Mix in some terrible story telling and bad quest design and you get this game. Might be worth a play when its on sale for 75% off.

Combat is just pure crap. Losing a shield makes this game boring the controls are clunky as hell. Voice acting and the scenery are nice but the game is severely held back by the dreadful fighting. There is no way I will finish this game. My advice buy the game when its on sale for 10 or less if you are a die hard fan and want to try it. To the others - avoid it. Possibly the worstCombat is just pure crap. Possibly the worst aspect to the horrible combat is it is too much like Mordor *which was garbage*. You will be mid fight and here come droves of people to join in the fun. Higher level bounties. I attacked one guy and before the fight was over and I ran for my life I screen shot how many were there. 11 bounties showed up? How? I had no chance. This happened 3 times in 15 hours -- no thanks Expand

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

If someone had told me couple of years ago that Assassin’s Creed would become a full-fledged action RPG that would not look out of place on a shelf next to The Witcher 3, I would have snickered. But here I am, over 80 hours into Odyssey and still unable to believe that really happened. [12/2018, p.44]

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
