First off: I am a big fan of classical Greece and Rome. So any game in either setting will get bonus points from me. Never played AC before, but I wasn't expecting a game a lot like the Witcher 3. Now, I adore that game, so I had no problem with a Greek spin on things. Great looking game, Kassandra was a good character. although the world was (admittedly) too big and the designers probably had not meant for it to be fully explored (as was the case with Witcher 3, in my opinion). If not, then, well, there is an excess of things to explore and find and I have little desire to 100% with the inclusion of such tedium. I did about 70% of the game's content (and all of the optional boss fights) and was very satisfied with the experience. Of course, YMMV, Expand

Love it or hate it--the action-rpg formula has replaced the stealth-focused action adventure model of earlier Assassin's Creed titles. Bearing that in mind, try to focus on what the game is trying to do rather than what it doesn't.

Love it or hate it--the action-rpg formula has replaced the stealth-focused action adventure model of earlier Assassin's Creed titles. Bearing that in mind, try to focus on what the game is trying to do rather than what it doesn't.

If anyone can manage to make the adventures of a Spartan-born mercenary through an ancient Greek world filled with war, political intrigue, and creatures both mundane and mythic feel tedious or contrived, it's Ubisoft. Developed primarily by Ubi Quebec (AC: Syndicate,) this follow-up prequel (?!) to Origins improves on a few aspects, yet fails to capture the depth of character and lore that was present in Aya and Bayek's journey through Ubi Montreal's version of ancient Egypt. Confused yet? Don't worry. As I said: It isn't that deep.

The expanded systems presented here come at the cost of being mostly shallow and overwhelmingly omnipresent. Player choice and consequence is touted as a feature, but rarely strays beyond an aesthetic or small effect on the path to your goals beyond the core plotlines. (Speaking of binary choices, do yourself a favor and go with Kassandra over Alexios in your choice of sibling to play. While voiced well, I found that the thought of listening to a typical dudebro character for hundreds of hours threatened what remains of my tenuous grip on sanity, so I immediately restarted and went with the strong, yet soothing tones of Kass.)

I hope that you like combat, because your character is more gladiator than assassin. The repetitive and nearly constant nature of the fights in ACO mean that you'll want to specialize early, then expand and experiment later. (Hint: focus on "warrior" first.) Note: shields have been removed from the player's arsenal, so practice your parrying and dodging. No turtle tactics here.

Love loot management? Good--because outside of button-mashing battles, the inventory and blacksmith menus will be your primary residence for the rest of your journey. Seriously. The meta-game and stat-management makes most MMOs seem straightforward.

The visuals are nice, but seem a bit over-saturated and uniform in comparison to Origins--in spite of that world's large percentage of desert areas. The seas and landscapes can make for fantastic vistas, but to a somewhat lesser degree than its predecessor. The overall resolution and level of detail outside of cutscenes have also taken a hit (based on PS4 Pro,) but it may be a different story on other platforms. As for the audio work: It does the job, but nothing truly stands out. There are multiple layers to the aural landscape, though they are noticeably compressed and sound flat as a result.

Story... Honestly, I've spent so many hours on random tasks, hunting mythological beasts, and sidequests that I can barely keep track of what exactly I was trying to accomplish in the first place. Something about family, an evil cult, and a spear. Oh yeah--the Spear! ...and your sibling...and...and...you know what? It doesn't matter. You have a quest log that's ten miles long and an inch deep. Enjoy the tales and drama as one would with any popcorn flick or TV series. Just don't take it too seriously.

My advice? Play like a mercenary: Take frequent breaks, stop to enjoy the scenery, get into trouble, and you'll likely avoid burnout and probably have as much shallow fun as I have managed to squeeze out of the game. (Valhalla is 1.5 years old as I write this, so if Vikings and Norse mythology are more your speed--skip Odyssey and go berserk on that one. The whole Assassins vs. Templars thread has totally unraveled and been delegated to background material at this point, so choose your favorite flavor.)

    a) The story is engaging and well presented
    b) The graphics are spectacular (especially the light effects, the sea, etc...)
    c) There is a lot of content and there is important depth in the open world
    d) The naval battles are back (for those who miss Black Flag :))
    e) The gameplay is fun most of the time

There are some reasons why I think the reviews are around 6,5/10 and from my understanding, I see that a lot of players put 0/10 because of the microtransactions, the leveling system or the fact it doesn't seem as a traditional AC game.

However, the truth is that the microtransactions are not at all mandatory. We must consider side quests as main quests here...In fact, side quests give us reasons to explore the world, discover new areas, etc...

In my 86 hours playthrough, I've never been underleveled and I finished the main story at level 49. I plan to continue until level 52 or so (still want to complete a few quests...). Here are a few recommendations to enjoy your playthrough:

    1. You need to explore the world and do side quests.
2 Don't do the random generated quests on boards or the time limited ones. There are enough quests with the yellow mark to level up appropriately
    3. Play on normal difficulty. I would consider possibly hard for rpg fans but avoid at all cost Nighmare because enemies are really really spungy
    4. If you have an assassin build, try to be 1 or 2 levels above your enemies. I t will help you to play more stealthy. If you have the same level or if you're a bit underleveled, the risk is that you won't eliminate totally your target with a stealth attack
    5. Don't play this game right after Origins, The Witcher 3 or Zelda breath of the Wild. It's a little bit too similar, so you will best enjoy this game after completing other type of games (I played Concrete Genie, Bioshock Infinite, Bloodborne and Yakuza 3 before AC Odyssey)

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
