I'm a huge fan of the combat in AC Origin and if you feel the same DO NOT BUY THIS!!!. The combat in Odyssey is clunky, unpolished, and feels like they took several steps back from the previous title. I really tried to be positive, but this game is complete garbage. I'm not happy with how poorly this game turned out and wanted to voice my opinion on it.

I've not played as Assassins Creed game for quite a few years but got a free code for this and thought I'd give it a go. I'm quite shocked by how far the series has devolved into a mobile-like microtransaction fest design to wrangle as much money from the player as possible.

In short, the game is packed to the gills with artificial grind. There is a light RPG levelling system which lets the player upgrade their character as they progress through the game. Each game mission has a recommended level the player should be at in order to succeed. And by recommended I mean absolutely necessary as higher level enemies will deal enough damage to kill the player character in one or two hits.

The weird thing is that the XP needed to gain levels accumulates very slowly and you are faced with higher level enemies and missions right from the start. So how are you supposed to level up? Luckily Ubisoft has 'Time Saver' add ons to cut out the grind and increase XP gained, and all you need to do is part with your real world money. In a full priced game.

And why call them 'Time-Savers'? This isn't a job, its an entertainment product, you should want to spend time with it.

Everything in the game seems designed to push the player into buying these XP boosters as the player is constantly presented with high level enemies, missions, equipment and abilities. So playing without the boosters feels like playing a free mobile game with ads enabled.

And after all the bugging the player to spend real money the game itself is fairly unengaging and bland. The majority of missions are; 1 - Go to this place, 2 - Kill these people, 3 - Pick up this item , 4 - Return item to person. If you want to do that for 30 hours then this is the game for you.

The portrayal of ancient Greece is fairly well done (even though most of the research seems to have been watching the movie '300'' several times) and the light RPG elements are a nice addition. If you're interested in the setting then maybe wait to pick it up on sale.

But the game is designed to psychologically batter you into paying real money for a game you've already bought. Even if the game was one of the best ever made you have the right as a consumer to be able to switch off and enjoy the thing you've invested in without fighting the constant encouragement to part with yet more money. Go re-watch Jason and the Argonauts for the millionth time, you'll enjoy it a lot more than this.

That's not an Assassin's Creed game anymore. If I wanted to play an RPG I play The Witcher 3, wich is a better option by far. They change to much their game, and not always in a better way... And I don't even want to talk about that **** combat system! I'm sad that AC is just a shadow of what it used to be.

Assassins Greed Odyssey is by far one of the worst entries on the franchise full of bad game design and poor story telling. Let´s start with the dialog and story (NO SPOILERS), so the dialogs system tries to be like witcher 3 dialog but unfortunantley falls flat, in one mission I tried calming down a little girl and appeard a dialog for it but what my Alexios said was a brutally opinion and harmed the poor girl´s feelings and this type of dialogs are spread in all the game side quests and main missions. The flashbacks are cheesy with no impact at all, and the romance system is so boring, it doesn´t requiered attetion to the character you trying to romance, just press the romance of option and BAM you just got a hot date with a boring no meaningful character, were in other games you need to actually put effort in doing it.
Now the combat: Origins did a great job evolving AC combat and it was simple, functonal, with a functional lock-system. But un AC Odyssey is a complete mess, the parry requieres two buttons to work LB+RB which if you ask me is pointless, when in other games like witcher 3, dark souls, origins, etc., you only press one button for the parry and it worked so good because hey just requieres pressing one simple button. When you hold LB for a special attack or parry, your character is completley vulnerable and thanks to the delay of buttons in the game, you´ll end up getting hit, (NOTE: Im playing this game on nightmare mode), the lock system is crazy, with a small move the joystick you´ll change the lock to multiple enemies, a cool feature on ORIGINS was when you were close to a structure, plant, fence, etc., you could see through those things so you wouldn´t miss the character and concencrete fully on the battle, when AC Odyssey doesn´t have that helpful feature and last but not least the special attacks are broken, specially the spartan kick, you know your game has problems when people abuse the special attacks and that makes the game unchallenging when they´re charge.
Difficulty: like I said, Im playing on nightmare mode. As someone who loves a challenge, the difficulty on AC is not challenging but absurd, when Im fighting against the legedary animals Im so concentrated on them that when all they call more animals to aid the "boss" my enjoyment is completely ruin by a bad game design wich is that, when you are fighting a boss is suppose to be between you and the boss and not their minions+boss and the problems mentioned before made the battles more frustrating and the same goes to captains, ORIGINS nightmare mode made it fair and challenging. -OH JUST LOWER THE DIFFICULTY DOWN, yeah like lowering down the difficulty will fix the problems of game design in the game.
    Special features:
Bounty: the bounty was a create concept, but poorly introduced. Mercenaries appeared out of nowhere next to you after 5 seconds into the bounty, they´re crazy powerful or weak mercenaries, they aren´t divieded by zones. The phylakitais on ORIGINS worked so much better, all of them were powerful but fair and divided by zones.
System Isolation: I hate the new armor/lvl/combat system, they isolate the stealth, combat and ranged combat. When I tried doing my playthrough stealthy I was completley rekt, why? Simple, my assassin armor was weak, and if I used the hunter or warrior armor, they´ll decreased my stealth damage, at the en I gave up on my stealth playthrough and went combat only which is a shame since I love my stealth missions and playthrough. The bows are completley useless even with full hunter armor. Games like MGSV, origins, metro, etc. Reward you for stealth and aren´t isolated by a stupid and painful system isolation.
Animations: thanks to the poorly lock system, the mess of a combat system, and bad game desing, the animations paid a huge price specially on the combat, they are so many bad animations for the enemies that I usually miss a parry thanks the to poorly made animations, some enemies will hit you with an invisible attack that connected with you even 2mts away. And the climbing, I always get stuck on various parts of the maps thanks to a poorly placed polygon or bad programming.
Enemies: the female enemies with spears are crazy powerful, they´ll hit you non-stop even if you hit them they wont flinch at all, the big ones are easy but with creazy powerful attacks, but mostly easy, the one handed sword are fast for its own good, and then the shield ones thata are like mountain with a crazy defense or weak defense. There is no balance and so many other enemies that are more broken than FOR HONOR at launch.
I could keep going and say more about the problems about this game, but Im running out of characters. So at the end, DO NOT HEAR THE GAME JOURNALIST AND GAME CRITIQUES LIKE IGN AND GAMESTOP, they were paid to said good things about this game (like always). After this awful expirience Im never buying a game from ubisoft quebec ever again.

But sadly the game bases its game play on these micrtransactions and they cast a shadow on this review as a whole. It is basically Assassins Creed Origins but located in ancient Greece rather than Ptolemaic Egypt. But even in Origins the mechanics weren't as grind heavy as there were at least ways to gather resource quickly in the form of attacking shipments of resources and taking them. Here there is no such mechanic and finding resources in order to upgrade your armor and weapons will be one of the hardest things you will have to do in this game. Of course the reason behind this grind is that they sell resource kits filled with material required to upgrade in their online store. in some cases I had armor in my sets that were 20 levels behind my current cap at level 50 because at that level the amount of resources required to upgrade were as much as 600 to 700 just for one upgrade and as a reference the most I have gotten from an ore is 10. So these mechanics alone are enough to drive my score down to a 5. But everything in combination heavily outweighs any of the good that is to be seen in this game. The amount of detail in this game is breathtaking and it seems Ubisoft really did their research when looking up how life in Greece really was in this time period. instead of plain white marble structures everything is painted and beautifully filled with color much like at the time period. And Greek pronunciations and dialect are a welcome change from the whitewashed hockey British accents you see in most film set in ancient Greece. Now while being historically authentic to culture and aesthetic doesn't mean they got everything right. For the love of god where is the hoplite warfare that was indicative of the time period. Why are there so many Spartan ships. Why do they make this war seem like it lasted a couple of weeks when it was really 30 years. Why is the plague played down so little when it was really the main reason Athens lost the conflict. Why is this spartan soldier fighting with two maces who did it. Not having his shield alone was enough for him to lose his spartan citizenship.
This games combat is enjoyable just like origins and most of it was copy and pasted from origins to fit this game. And specific bows aren't necessary for specific actions they were added onto the skill tree for this game instead which is a welcome change of pace for bow combat.
Characters are also interesting and engaging. Though much of your interaction with them is forced rather than something that is sought out. As stated above this game is incredibly grindy. So in order to progress through the main story you a forced to do these sidequests rather than wanting to do them on your own. Use The Witcher 3 on how you should base secondary mission element into your game. So even in character development microtransations rear their ugly face into this game. Although I did enjoy my discussions with Sokrates and Alkibiades though I will never understand why they made him so effeminate. But if you want to hear me ramble and say the **** word more times than can be counted check out my review on my youtube channel.

It does everything to try to make you buy microtransactions, which don't belong in single player games. The game gives you so little XP for quests further contributing to the feeling of grind. The game is a chore to get throught and at the end the game doesn't even have a satysfying ending no matter which choices you pick(not like they even have any real effect). 3) Gameplay is still somewhat fun BUT the world is immense and it becomes highly repetitive and boring after 3 regions.

Overall, AC: Odyssey was really disappointing for me, I had big expectations. If you find it at, let’s say 75% discount, buy it and spend 2 days to complete the game. Otherwise, don’t bother.

The RPG mechanics don’t fit this saga, combat is just silly and cartoony and the atmosphere is just too politically correct. It’s a boring and grindy game and the end of an era.

*WARNING: Very late and long-winded rant review that focuses on the negatives primarily!**

It is a sad sight to see a giant like Assassin's Creed lose its identity and sense of direction. Assassin's Creed thrived while in its action/adventure story style but, after years of milking the series for what it's worth year after year, the developers decided to make things fresh by almost completely stripping it of its identity. For critics, reviewers, and casual players, this is a welcomed change. But for the real fans, it is reasonable to see this as a tragedy. The linear, focused version of storytelling is replaced by your cooky cutter open dialog choice, gender selection, and multiple endings, which would be fine if that fit into Assassin's Creeds established lore and formula. The reason why the other installments didn't have these RPG elements are because of the Animus, a machine that lets people experience memories of ancestors through their DNA. Realistically, this would mean you sit through the memories like you would a linear story, not mend and change the memories to your liking like you would with a RPGs. The RPG formula just doesn't work with the storytelling of the game.

The present-day story has been weak for a long time now, ever since the end of Desomd Mile's story. Granted, the present day story from the first Assassin's Creed to Assassin's Creed 3 has had its fault. But, even with those faults, the story of Desmond Miles was interesting, had its high moments, and held a lot of insight into the world of Assassin's Creed. With better writing and care, the present day story could've been something truly great. But by comparison, Desmond Mile's story was far better than what's been spit out over the past few games and the implementation of Layla Hassan hasn't been a real improvement. People actually praise the fact that she and her present-day story is hardly in the game, which is disappointing because it shows that the writers can't seem to get the present-day aspect of their overall story right. In this installment, they also seem to forget the driving force and reason for these games; the Assassins and the Templars. These two major fighting forces are pretty much non-existent throughout the game, which is disappointing considering there are a lot of areas of both sides that still need to be fleshed out but are sadly ignored.

But to get off the subject of story, there are a few things to point out in terms of gameplay. The combat is a joke. Movement and animation are janky and cartoonish, stealth assassinations are a little outlandish for stealth assassinations, and with the implementation of RPG elements, there are these giants, goofy numbers that pop up with every attack. This a far cry from what the combat used to be. Sure, in terms of challenge and variety, it is better compared to the counter-spamming combat system of older installments. But, with what it gains, it loses the charm and interest that came with the smooth combat and cinematic movement and executions. It felt as though you were playing as an experienced fighter and assassin, not as a janky cartoon character on cocaine. There is just no charm to the combat as it sits now.

Also, what is the point of freerunning at this point? The most iconic part of the series where you could get from place to place in a fast and fashionable manner, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, wall to wall, has been belittled to jumping and climbing over rocks, trees, and a handful of buildings that are just close enough to jump between so you feel some sort of relevance out of it.

The Assassin's Creed formula along with the identity has changed so much to the point where it is no longer is an Assassin's Creed game. Rather than improving the series's gameplay and story shortcomings while still keeping it true to its roots, Ubisoft seems to think it's better to just throw out everything that made Assassin's Creed great and turn it into an unrecognizable game to follow the fad of everything being an RPG and to make a profit off the series name. As a totally separate game, Assassin's Creed Odyssey would be a great game and probably have a lot better scoring overall. But, being that it is an Assassin's Creed game, it should be judged as so. For hardcore and veteran players, it should be sad to see a game so loved lose so much of itself just so that companies can continue to milk it year after year. It has seriously lost the heart and soul that made it great.

    - massive map that does not need loading screens between islands
Cons - assassination damage builds are completely useless - assassination button being mapped the same as the interact button is probably the dumbest idea I have seen in a long time - brings back the Origins style assassinations, where if anybody is two levels higher than you, pressing the assassination button

    - the story is forgettable
    - the side stories are completely forgettable
    - the spongy enemies are back and it is even worse now, as some of the Mercenaries that come after you can take five minutes of straight DPS so you are going to be fighting a single enemy for about ten minutes, if you include dodging and strafing
    - the microtransactions went from bad to abysmal as every part of progression is either a disgusting grind or pay five dollars for 150%XP boost for two hours

Want to hear the best joke the series ever told? Assassination damage builds in AC Odyssey. The level based assassinations are back and they are as dumb as ever. Upon pressing the assassination button an animation plays. In this animation, you could see your character stab someone sixty times then set them on fire then poison them then let a lion tear them to shreds and then drop a nuke on them. And they get hit for five percent of their max health.

But wait, this game has melee damage builds, ranged damage builds and assassination damage builds. Surely if I build assassination damage I can kill people with my assassinations. Yeah, no. In fact you are screwing yourself over completely if you build like that.

I mean, you will do fifteen percent of their health instead of five but guess what? They are still not dead. And now they alerted the whole camp. So you either have to fight or run. Oh you want to fight? Dummy you built assassination damage not melee damage. So the enemies that are spongy for the melee damage builds are a nightmare for you. Now instead of just the Mercenaries taking five minutes each, all of the enemies will take years off your life.

Now I am going to make a controversial statement. Ready? Interact button should be an interact button. OK? Let me repeat that. Interact button should be an interact button. Do you know what I don't want to do? I don't want to run up to an NPC and jump instead of talking to them. I don't want to crouch instead of talking to them. I don't want to use an item instead of talking to them. And I certainly do not want to track a nearby non-essential NPC and put my knife through their neck. Of course not killing them but now they are hostile as well as the quest giver.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to make the Interact Button/Assasination Button combo on the controller should be fired on the spot. Like how stupid are you?

Ok now to the fun part, the microtransactions. When this game drew ire for the amount of ridiculous monetization they came out defending it with the most hilarious lie I have ever seen. The Time Savers are there for adults that don't have time to grind video games. I mean you could do that… or you could just not make the game a grindfest scraping for every bit of progression in order to be tempted into the store. But thanks Ubisoft, thanks for balancing the game just right and thinking about the hard working people.

Damn this game just pisses me off. I 100% it without ever purchasing a single thing from the store and damn, there are few games that left me emptier than this one. This thing is a hollow shell of what the greater AC series used to be. It is not all bad, as there are moments where I had some fun with the game and I clearly had to enjoy some of it to 100% it but wow. The hours put into this title feel like wasted time which is not a feeling I should get after finishing a game.

Why those damned naval battles? Misfortune of poorly made game mode, without sense or reason! Whoever invented these maritime missions in the game deserves to receive cold pizza for life! And more: realism and immersion are necessary, but Alexios' balls detailed when you dive with him is a detail of extreme bad taste!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mediocre at best. With supper repetitive quest you have to grind out to level up enough to push the story along. All so they can micro you into buying exp boosts. Mix in some terrible story telling and bad quest design and you get this game. Might be worth a play when its on sale for 75% off.

It feels like they knew the game was no good, but had to get it out the door so they released it anyway. My recommendation: RedBox it first. Repetitive quests: go there do something simple, come back. Go further, do the same, come back from further. You will lose the motivation to explore the whole map.
Main story is boring and not interesting if you compare with previous games. There was so much potential in the Spartan-Athens times and they just wasted the opportunity to create a good game. This is just a bog DLC of Origins

    First technical issues :
Horse is bugged like I've never seen it, glitching in the bridges or rocks, never jump. The worst is that it can't follow properly a road even though the Witcher 3 did it perfectly 5 years ago!
The game is poorly optimized, I have a pretty good computer (decent quality on the witcher 3, AC Unity, other games), it's not the best computer but it works fine and is able to manage a heavy game. With Odyssey I dropped the graphics to the lowest, the game looks like a PS2 game and it's still lagging !!! I mean the terrain is worst than Skyrim's at this point!
Good transition, the textures are ugly. Not because they aren't of good quality when you turn the graphics on, but because they're shoddy. Look at the male main character, whatt's the problem with his eyes ?
The AI is still stupid, people think that using math to force you using a certain number of hits to kill someone is creating difficulty and challenge, but it's actually just boring and none realistic in a game that wants to be as much realistic.
Realism in the game is just killing all the fun, caves so dark you can't see a thing, characters too much like "everybody" , ... . The characters lack epicness ! I don't want to play aybody, I could just be myself in real life, the graphics and latency are unbeatable. I want to play an assassin

    Game issues:
The story is boring. The reason is that if you can decide the end of every quest, decide too much things, there s actually no story... It's just a sandbox, and I like sandboxes but they aren't no game.
The controls are so frustrating and poorly chosen !! seriously, Y to assassinate, RB to hit? X to dodge ??? I mean you want to dodge and assassinate quickly, choosing the buttons that are the furthest from your thumb IS a bad choice, it's purely basic ergonomic logic. RB is in my opinion a bad choice for spammable actions because it forces you to move your hand in a none intuitive position but that's less objective.
Bow does no damage, assassination are not worth it bec
There are the same problems with freerun there was in Unity (haven't played Origins nor Syndicate): whan you want to jump between roofs, cross a fence, an obstacle , ... The character stops, cross the obstacle slower than if it was walking, and then have to run again. I thought the point of free run was to cross obstacles quickly and escape from the ennemies ??? It's so not worth it ! Every ennemy will catch up .
The story is just badly told, the introduction of the character is with flash backs inside the animus which is basicly a flash back. The main character is a stereotype of "fighter with a heat" like Rob Roy, Bruce Willis in most of his roles, ... . But it worls in latter movies because the hero is struggling. Given the broken abilities of Alexios/Kassandra, I just don't buy it.

    Issues related to the franchise:
This is not an Assassin's Creed ! No assassinations, free run is useless and painfull, fights feel like a cheap the witcher 3.
The point of Assassin's Creed was to hide a story behind well known historical events and figures. I don't know why every spartan in this game speak like Kratos or the spartans in the movie 300 but it's so wrong. Sparta had 2 kings, slaves and all free spartans were poets aside being warriors (and there are much more errors).
Assassin's Creed games worked around different phases : assassinate, run away. It's okay to try reinventing the game, but wether your really change it or you don't change it at all. The skills feels useless, not really damage dealing. They are forced into the game without necessity: in the warrior tree, the first 3 skills are kind of similar but not really interesting, just flavouring the fights.

To sum it up : just play the witcher 3, it's much better.
2 things are really interesting though : Ikaros is so great : technically and in the gameplay, so useful, such a great eagle vision! The armor designs are reallyg good. Lacks some variety but yet really good.

In games like the Witcher 3 level scaling is an option, but the defult is off, and you only really need to turn it on for new game plus. The witcher is a leveling system done right, this is not. The combat is also boring and like I said above, you will need 5-10 minutes of strait hitting a guy to kill an enemy a few levels above you. The world is also boring and samey. There are very few instantly recognizable places. The side quests in that world are some of the most uninteresting and boring things to ever exist. The side characters are boring and uninteresting. The story is also boring, generic, and uninteresting. And it's more of a personal thing, but I don't like alot of strait up magic in my Assassin's Creed. Alse the end game is incredibly grindy. I think Ubisoft should make this a biennial franchice. Give each game more developement time and space them out a bit more, and try to go back to classic Assassin's Creed. Using the newer and better technology available they could make a classic style AC game set in the days of Genghis Khan in the Mongal empire, the Mexican Revolution, the Spanish Inquisition, futile Japan, any time in Russian history. You may have realised that I didn't mention anything about assassins, probably because there aren't any. The traditional one shot assassinations now only deal half the damage and no longer kill someone instantly and the story is somewhat boring. I could probably get into it if the main quest didn't require 5 hours of side quests to get to the level you need to start the thing. Some of the characters are interesting but I do have a question. Why make the player choose between 2 characters if you only really care about one? It just screams lack of dedication. Not only that, but the same character model is used again and again, oh look this pirate woman is a priestess now on the same island! And the mercenary's make no sense as they can track you instantly despite being over 5000m away from you at the time and just randomly stalk you, phones didn't exist back then so it was word of mouth or letters and neither of these were implemented. The gems and rocks you are me at to collect haven't been designed well either, they morph into walls so you can't reach them but ping anyway. It could be ignored by some but annoy the living daylights out of me. This shouldn't have been labelled as an ac game as it holds no resemblance to the franchise. Origins was nice because it was a new game style but even then the replacement of Eagle vision with an actual Eagle was pushing it. Now eagles are the eyes of the characters with no explanation for how this happened. Don't get me wrong, the characters look great with Alexios having very kind eyes and the facial expressions being amusing, but the game feels like it was rush produced and kind of shows that. Now there's also an emphasis on tombs, like the Greeks were all lara croft and possessed magic. I'm going to be honest and say that the modern story is lost on me at this point. I have no idea what's happening and each game seems to be standalone to me now. Not only is the game incredibly repetitive, there's also a very large amount of bugs that just cause the game to crash or break that don't appear in the previous installments like unity or syndicate despite being played on the same console. Multiple forums online also attest to these bugs appearing across multiple platforms and countries so it can't be the console itself. I could go on and on about why this is a bad game but that would waste more of my time and I think enough of that has been used on this game. The story line is forgotten when you are forced to level up before playing and the exploration mode is illogical when it essentially guides you to the marker anyway. Do not fork out full price for this, I wouldn't even bother as you will just become frustrated unless you like meaningless combat and time wasting. For a game marketed at £40 on release, it barely rivals the early xbox original games as games like the original fable would be a more enjoyable experience.

Think of a game. Tons of ridiculous side quests are required to finish the main story. Despite everything, you play by raising the level. You play the game for about 50 hours, but what do you see? Ubisoft said "If you want to see the end, buy DLC. Otherwise, it's not game over."

    - Boring story
    - Clunky animations - Very poor facial animations
    - Missions feel like chores - Unwanted identity politics Basically a Witcher 3 ripoff without a soul. Not for AC fans.

This time around however, the characters aren't switched between throughout the game but selected once at the start. To me this is pretty redundant and pointless especially without any indication of what their differences will be aside from gender. I checked if there was any substance to the choice online, but there isn't so I just chose Kassandra as she was easier to understand.

Speaking of false choices, due to Assassins Creed trying so hard to be an rpg these days there's now constant choice prompts in character interactions instead of the traditional cut scenes. They're mostly redundant and just serve to demand player attention and interaction giving the illusion of choice. 99% of choices only give a different responding sentence and don't otherwise affect the conversation or the gameplay in any way.
I would've enjoyed the game much more without them and had to stop myself from spamming circle to skip through conversations.
An example early on of the falsity of choice is choosing a horse. You have to ask about each horse to get told of their "strengths", you go to pick the one with the desired strength only to be told it has a weakness which you dont get told of, then told to choose again or decide. Turns out the horses are all pretty much the same, have the same "weakness" response when selected, then have the same name, and control and travel the same speed.

As with Origins, ubisoft are constantly ruining the controls of the game, now taking the horrible rpg-like controls from origins and further worsening them by removing shields and requiring multiple simultaneous key presses to block attacks. Additionally, heavy weapons have been nerfed since Origins, where they used to provide a block type move mid-swing, now no longer do so in Oddysey, so heavy weapons are now slower and offer no defense.

You have the false illusion of being able to assassinate, except assassination doesn't kill on a single hit unless you are of the same level as the enemy. I long for the days of real Assassins Creed, where enemies weren't all gods.

Many moves which were default in Origins now need to be unlocked, eg Overpower. Even worse, "revelation" aka "pulse" aka eagle vision (rip) something that has existing since AC1, now has to be unlocked and isn't default by points (which makes no sense in an AC plotline). It's also pretty much useless even maxed up as the eagle (up arrow) is far better at finding and identifying things than the revelation/pulse.

Ruined the lore. According to an item at the beginning within Oddysey (not even part of the plot), the precursors took the names of gods rather than being mistaken for gods as per the original Desmond plot of AC.
Instead of being assassins vs templars, this game is a soap opera about a family. It's the most boring assassins creed game i've played, and perhaps the most boring game in general I've played. Also, there's now supernatural mythical enemies now. Origins had some mythology, but it only did this within the pharaoh dlc and within the guise of curses. This is just straight-up running around hack-and-slash grinding identical enemies with varying level mixed with mythical beasts.

I don't understand what this game was trying to be. Obviously some sort of RPG, for some reason. But.. it's a terrible rpg. There's no real role to play. There's no feeling of accomplishment. No variation in missions. No meaning to choice or actions. Only a few decisions actually matter and honestly I didn't care about a single one of them as the situations are dull. Inventory management is rubbish.
Quests are disposible. There's no plot, it's just a character traveling around trying to find other characters, and whilst doing this having sex with as many people, male or female, as they can. And not in a funny way like Leisure Suit Larry. Just a cringe way like pandering to teenagers. None of the relationships matter, and the sex doesn't do anything for the character or story. The ending even hammers home how pointless all of these interactions were.
The plot was already quite thin with Origins, but at least what there was of a plot was fairly memorable. The characters mattered and the main arc made sense. There's really nothing memorable with Oddysey.
Horizon zero dawn, was a much better action rpg, it's such a superior game in literally every way.

As a fan since the original Assassin's Creed in 2007, this will be the last Assassin's Creed game I will buy. I never imagined one day i'd be stuck playing an assassins creed game where I have to roam around spamming slash attacks on artificially leveled-up enemies and worse, fantastical monsters, while searching for members of my family only for nothing to really happen when I do.. This was meant to be a game about assassins and stealth, good vs evil, vox populi vs capitalism, and the origin of humankind.

"The beginning of the end of Assassin's Creed."

That alone should be at the top of every professional review because everything you ever loved has been squeezed out of this series and replaced with a beautiful slog.

Like Origins, both the art style and aesthetic style are quite pretty. Also like Origins, it is the same art style and aesthetic style, which makes Odyssey nothing more than a reskinned game--just more massive. Also, you remember ship fights? You loved ship fights! Well, here, ship fights. It gets old real quick because again...it's the same thing!!

The voice acting is unbelievably bad both in the lines the actors were given and how they are delivered. Combat is a "refined" version of the one in Origins, which means you can cheese almost everything in the game.

The in-game story is pathetic but what's worse: the meta-narrative is effectively dead, and I blame the gaming community at large for killing it. The whole reason this series is a franchise is that meta-narrative, but you mouthbreathers couldn't handle more than one thing at a time (STOP TAKING ME OUT OF THE ANIMUS!!) and this gave Ubisoft all the ammunition to create a stupid chore-grind simulator devoid of any reason to do them.

Now, let's talk about that chore grinding, shall we?

This isn't a "game." Games are supposed to be fun. You're supposed to enjoy doing all the content right? Well, in true Ubisoft fashion, Odyssey is littered with nothing but mindless busy work. "Treasure" is littered across the map which will take you dozens of mindless hours to collect. Does it do anything for you? Not really, the loot is nonsense and vapid. Then there are all the other little things, exploration markers and side quests, so many of these things are here that eventually the rest of the game just fades away. If you were to remove all this padding and just did the main narrative, I will bet you could finish the entire game in under 20 hours.

But then comes the scam that is Ubisoft game design.

See, you can't just go and play through the main story ignoring everything else. No, you will NEVER make the level you need to be to get there because Ubisoft designed this game in such a way that you MUST grind levels out before you can progress. In every game, there is an element of grinding that is to be found. This usually is up to the player to do if they want to be a bit ahead of the curve dealing with the rest of the game. In Odyssey, it's the backbone to SCAMMING THE PLAYER TO BUY HELIX CREDITS!

So what Ubisoft effectively did was scaled back XP accruement (experience points) to an absurd degree. It throttles progression so severely that you are left doing one of two things:

1)Grit your teeth and spend WAY too much time grinding nonsensically.
2)Buy Helix Credits and pay for a PERMANENT 50% XP BOOST.

You read that right: Ubisoft throttled regular XP earnings in an RPG, only to "Sell it back to you" so you could play the game normally. Also, In-game currency is throttled, and you can buy a PERMANENT 50% BOOST to further even out the game. Without buying these "upgrades," you are effectively playing a game with a 50% handicap the developer set as the default. They literally made the game painful to play so you'll ease your pain by giving more money. And let's be clear; you've already given them a minimum of $60 to play it. If you bought any of the higher-end versions, you don't somehow get a normal experience either; you're in the same boat as the person that paid the base price.

This game is a scam plain and simple. This isn't about player choice (always a lie), Ubisoft is banking heavily on the Assassins Creed IP to carry the day over their blatant scamming practices. It is greed, and it is wrong. And I'll be honest with you here: I don't own it, I am playing a borrowed copy (well I was until I couldn't take it anymore, it's so damn dull), but even so; my time with Assassins Creed has come to an end. Frankly, the series was over after AC3.

Do not buy, do not try, this is a scam and stop enabling Ubisoft to make games like this anymore.

I've put around 100 hours into this game and can honestly say it was a chore to play through.

Having played every console released Assassin's creed to date, its so frustrating to see Ubisoft continue to ruin the franchise with sub-par games that quite frankly make a mockery of established lore (whether you care about that stuff is up to you of course) and take the franchise in wild new directions that just don't work.

I'm on the fence as to whether the RPG transformation of the series is a good thing as it was done well in Origins and breathed new life into the series, but in this installment it's been dumbed down massively.

    Positives:

Beautiful and enormous game world with vibrant locations. One of the best looking AC games to date, if nothing else the game looks stunning. (this is honestly all i can think of to praise the game)

    Negatives:

You will notice from the get-go that animations are a weak point. Facial animation looks unnatural and reminds me a lot of Mass Effect: Andromeda (not quite as bad albeit) but you cant see any emotion in characters faces, they just seem to contort their faces in strange ways to attempt to convey emotion, the same with boy language. Just looks lazy. How is it that prev gen games like Mass Effect 1,2,3 could nail animations so well and recent games with arguably better tech do worse???? You'll also notice that walking and running looks weird, as if you're gliding and the horse animations are jittery.

Voice acting is terrible across the board, almost comical caricature performances. Look at RDR2 for example or the newest God of War, and compare the two. Leagues apart.

The story is messy and has nothing really to do with the original overarching templars v assassins + isu narrative. Ubisoft are just retconning bits in to justify making the game in the first place. You wont care about any of the characters or story in general by the end. To put it simply, boring.

Side quests are repetitive and boring, go there, kill this person/s, loot this chest and repeat. The game world is massive and filled with quests yes, but when you actually look at the content offered, its devoid of any substance. It's all very forgettable. It's just put there to pad the game out and 'fatten it up', to make it seem as if you're presented with a rich interesting world.

The audio is weird in places. Dialogue between characters is glitchy and the voice actors lines often interrupt eachother as if they are out of sync. Clearly shows how the game was rushed (which seems to be a common theme as you play through it).

Loading times are way too frequent, the game often cuts to black screens to load cutscenes or dialogue and it breaks the immersion of the game, this will try your patience. Loading times after death are annoying.

    Overall polish:

****The game is full of game breaking glitches and it will frequently crash****

This is incredibly frustrating and will try your patience, you have been warned.
For example, a quest that i need to finish in order to complete the story is broken, so i cant even complete the game. There are numerous other examples you can find online from players saying the same. It's clear this game was rushed and you'll see that as you play the game, from its distinct lack of overall polish in any area.

To conclude i would simply say, avoid this game. It's incredibly disappointing, lacks technical polish, is poorly constructed and feels like an absolute chore to play.

I can simply no longer find enjoyment in this game after only putting in 6hrs. I have pushed myself to find fun in this and yet all I have been presented with is disappointment and frustration. I started the game on hard and while I did play through a rough experience at first, I only encountered impossible scenarios as I progressed. More often than not, I had to 'cheese' my way through enemy encampments just to progress the story. Being 1 level under an enemy leader, my assassinations did little damage and my swords acted as feather dusters. I attempted to lower my difficulty from hard to medium, then to easy, and enduring the god awfully long loading screens that come with this process. At the end easy proved no different from hard. Enemy count was not reduced and my feathered dusters were only slightly upgraded in damage to nerf swords. Even before this broken levelling system pushed me over the edge I was frustrated with the camera and controls. WHY is getting off your horse a different button than getting on it!? Even after trying to remap the controls, and fighting with conflicts, did I still not get the desired effect. I would give this game 2 points for world design and textures... If I could even zoom in the camera to see more of my character and the world around me but no, it is fixed far behind the player. The writing is also god awful. The characters outside of the animus are more lifeless than the simulations it recreates. I dare anyone to get through the first cutscene (after the MANDATORY first battle) and not cringe. The characters have no depth and the starting story is easily dismissible. The side missions, storywise, are pointless. I have never played the bad guy in a game before, but because of my growing frustrations with Odyssey, I always chose to make life hell for anyone I encountered in the game. This should not be considered a triple A title... It lacks too many features included by other studios and is a tremendous letdown. Save your money, replay black flag or Origins. Expand

    3. None of this has anything to do with the assassins or the historical veracity
    4. Quests in the spirit of " five times climb the statue."

This is officially the worst game of the series.

This is the worst Assassins creed game of all time, the story sucks, the gameplay ABSOLUTELY sucks! Its been made unnecessarily hard. To collect the materials needed for certain upgrades you need to bend over backwards and go wayyyy out of your way to achieve it. The Combat ist just annoying, nothing aims right, the stupid assigning of abilities is just soooo stupid!!! As if someone's gonna have time mid battle to navigate through the abilities to use them, we only have two hands. Dodging an opponents attack isn't really dodging it as you literally get caught at the end of the swing like wth!! They need to learn from the old games like Black Flag and Syndicate, the combat wasn't perfect but at least you could fight more opponents at the same time. The naval battles also leave something to be desired, again, they need to learn from previous games like Black flag. The fact that we have to choose the answers to everything ourselves now is an incredibly a stupid concept, especially if we need to get certain ones in a certain way to get the whole family together. Some people don't like sitting through the dialouge hence we sit there clueless ass to what to choose. The map is sooooo unclear at all times, you can never find the necessary symbol, just filled with a lot of jibberish. Fix these issues in Valhalla plz. Been a fan for a long time of the series but Origins and ESPECIALLY Odyssey have turned me off the game. Expand

Felt like a chore and nothing was worthwhile. Too much repetition and the combat system was not satisfying or responsive. Story was okay, but broken up by endless tasks. Don’t fall for the scam, this is an Assassin’s creed mobile game for console.

The problem in this game is the title... It isn't an assassin's creed so...
While origins was around the creation of the creed and everything this game isn't about anything that deals with the ac's...
Idk why ubisoft did this one...

It’s pretty bad. Horrible gameplay, the world is way too colorful and combat is n realist. Pretty much opposite what Assassins creed used to be.

Worst game ever, the only Assassin's Creed element in it is the animus, If this can be called an Assassin's Creed.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is without a doubt the worst game of the series. From all the microtransactions that are basically forced upon a player to have an enjojable experience, poorly designed combat system that sucks all the joy out of a player and the fact that it has very little to do with actual assassin's creed, there are not many positive thoughts I have about this game other than the actual setting and a generally good story with some mildly memorable characters. It is the first game in the series that I regret buying. Watching a walktrough of the story on youtube would have been a far better and cheaper option where I would have been spared grinding an empty world with mythological creatures and fire swords, that have no place in an ac universe, just to become a high enough level to progress trough the story. Everything is level gated, everything is super grindy and every single enemy is a damage sponge not matter the difficulty you are on. Also the story is boring during the acts 2 and 3.

They shouldn't call it assassin's creed.
Graphics is amazing, gameplay is ok.

    Worst game in the series
Disgusting side quests, the plot is the worst I've ever seen, and the staging is worse than in previous games.

Is a terrible game, apart all the crap they carry over from old titles, the story is boring and tedious.
is redundant as torture. you keep doing only 3 things for all the game over and over. the side mission are boring as hell and the final story is just a joke seriously insulting ending.
there is literally nothing to do, all the side activities you had in previous game such as steal

This is the first AAA game that I I gave it up playing because of how bad and stupid the story is. I am pretty sure it was made by kids.

I think a stand needs to be taken against these shady business practices – to be honest it starts off entertaining enough until you realise it’s a trap for you to get into micro transactions. Expand

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

If someone had told me couple of years ago that Assassin’s Creed would become a full-fledged action RPG that would not look out of place on a shelf next to The Witcher 3, I would have snickered. But here I am, over 80 hours into Odyssey and still unable to believe that really happened. [12/2018, p.44]

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
