Graphic and art is amazing, except for the fact that the same art appears in multiple temples. Trust me, there is more Greek art out there. Expand

AC:Odyssey is boring and the more it tries to be a jack of all trades, the more it becomes clear that it's a master of none. I can't play this game for more than an hour because gameplay and quest design feels like a monotonous chore and the cut scenes and story are boring and uninspired.

This game is not Assassins Creed, not in the terms we have come to expect. It instead seems to focus on a piece of Eden "very powerful weapon/tool" in the Assassins Creed universe, but makes no mention of Assassins or Templars. The series seems to be stepping more and more away from the genre that made it successful and into a full on RPG, which is fine. Except in order to make an RPG successful you need a great leveling system and an amazing story. Only problem is that every quest in the game is the same. Go to X and kill Y soldiers or go to Y and get X loot. It is repetitive to the extreme. The story is small and seems distant to all the repetitive quests. This game goes back to what made Black Flag so successful and that is the open seas and sea battles. That again seems distant and forced as it seems 90% of quests and story is on the main land.
Do not get me started on the micro transactions. I spent $140 on the ultimate edition but am still trying to figure out what that bought me aside from the base game and some gear that is level 1 and is to expensive to upgrade unless you use real money to buy crafting materials. I have spent an additional $70 on maps, and boosters. Things that should have come with that $140 ultimate edition. Yes boosters are required in this game unless you want to spend hours getting one level past 25. Some people might say but leveling is part of an RPG. True it is... but not like this.

This game is just Origins with a new coat of paint, but terrible story.

This is the worst Assassins Creed game I have ever played and it hurts me to say that about my beloved series. The only reason it gets a 5 is because of the name Assassins Creed.

Although the game can be fun at times, especially when fighting multiple bounty hunters, raiding camps and big battles, the story is full of inconsistencies which is not helped by the abysmal voice acting of the protagonists and mediocre and sometimes exaggerated animations.
By a simple comparison, this game makes Unity look like a million bucks.
I would recommend waiting for a sale on this one.

I really wanted to love this game, but, overall, all of its elements made it too hard to actually love it.I have been playing games in the franchise ever since the original, and the evolution from that to this is gigantic. On the surface,it is the same with its predecessor,AC Origins, but it changes something important: The grind.I would not mind so much that it takes hours over hours to get to level 50 fore example,if not for the purchaseable XP boosters.Such things should not exist in full-priced 3A games.Never.The missions required to level up are repetitive too. Let's talk about the setting:Ancient Greece. The graphics which turn this place to life are amazing, and still hold up very well to this day.The map is very big,and filled with places to steal your gaze.As for the marine environment,it could have done much better, like AC4 or even Rogue. It does not.Activities at sea are limited.Ship combat feels as if it is not fresh,it is very similar to other ship combat styles in their games. The fighting system between Athens and Sparta is alright, but gets repetitive. The mercenary system is a welcome addition, reminds me of AC Rogue in some way.
Combat is very similar to Origins combat, and it feels repetitive very soon. Storywise,it is not bad.It all blends with the already customary historical characters and the Cult system, which are great for supporting the story.Although the story is alright,it lacks a true narrative, most dialogues are easily skippable. To me,it is not a full price worth it game, but can be bough on sale and had fun playing it

I like the game, but I think that the stealth not being a part of ASSASSIN's Creed, you know a game about assassins who sneak up on their prey and kill them quietly is kinda sad, but I do like the theme of Ancient Greece, though I wish it didn't become more the Witcher 3 in terms of mythology and RPG like level system, before, you saw a tough enemy? Fine just come up with a tactic and attack him, now everything's about levels. The animations unfortunately like most games nowadays are pretty horrendous, but overall it's a good game but not really an Assassin's Creed game Expand

It looks nice, controls are not the best in the series but manageable, but the story just didn't work with me, the characters were boring, plot uninspiring and to be hones, I couldn't even force myself to finish it. The bland locations, where you go only because it is marker on the map with possible loot and xp which you need both to grind in between story parts to be able to keep up with escalating level of enemies, was just dull and incredible boring. I honestly couldn't squeeze an ounce of joy out of it.
I might come to it back during Christmas and give it one more try, but after the 40 hours, the game didn't show me anything worth remembering and I have a feeling that after a year or two, I won't recall much more than it was in ancient Greece. And that's coming from a person who's gone through all previous instalments with platinum trophy.

In this game, the concept of "brotherhood" is almost forgotten, there are no blades and especially hoods here, stealth has completely degraded, during the hidden murder our hero instead of graceful movements shoves an enema into the enemy, it's just ridiculous, I understand the indignation of fans of this series, which partly I am also.Ubisoft has a brand: Assassin's Creed, so they are trying to squeeze all the money out of it that can be deflated. The ancestor's DNA in the new part was “damaged”, because we can choose its gender, and also independently choose the development of its history, what I do not fully understand. Is the essence of the game not to KNOW the story of the ancestor, and not to change it? I think it will soon be possible to choose not only gender, but also race, gender, sexual orientation, isn't it? After all, everyone understands that you want this, come on.
The combat mechanics have changed, and for the better, but still it is wooden, slow and inconvenient, and besides, it is not spectacular, have you really not seen the mechanics of Bloodborne or Dark Souls? God Of War, Spiderman after all. In terms of plot, I am ready to applaud the developers, thank you so much that the series has somehow moved a little. In the new part of the plot is not, we just play for a hero who is interested in this life only money, Clint Eastwood from the world of games. The game also has a large number of historical figures, the game is making attempts to enlighten you, descriptions of various architectural monuments, palaces and theaters have been added to the game. But from the changes I saw little of what was new, only the graphic component changes in the game, and this is great, the game is very beautiful in truth, the spirit and beauties of Ancient Greece are transmitted fantastically, I am pleased with it.

Then there's the bugs. I play on a ps4 pro. I should not see severe game stuttering. I should not see 30 second load times. The world shouldn't have to rebuild after using Ikaros. I should not have to reboot the game because I can't use the torch anyone for some reason. I don't know what happened, the whole thing feels rushed. Ubisoft's single players games lately have surprised me with how much they, as a publisher and variety of development studios, have learned in what makes a game fun. However, there are some poor choices that hamper what could have been a great experience in open world game design.

What really blows me away about this game is the presentation. All of Greece is amazing to look at, and when the sun sets in certain areas, casting a palpable atmosphere upon the game's excellently-modeled foliage and buildings. The visuals really deserve more praise than I've seen, even if they're not the absolute best in AAA gaming; they have a way in drawing the player into its world. Characters seem convincingly-modeled to me, their animations are par the course and don't seem janky, and have poly counts befitting a AAA detail-focused developer such as Ubisoft. In particular, I like the designs for all the armor and weapons in the game; I'm clueless if they're period-accurate, but they are yet another element of the game that draws me in. The way the gear (weapons, armor) looks and knowing how much of it there is in the game provides a decent reward for exploring the game's world, in principle. This is where we run into a problem: the game's level-scaling. Most gear you find is scaled to your level, which is fine, but makes it so older, more beloved sets of armor can quickly become outdated to sate the game's padded stat system. It's a numbers game, and that means you'll find yourself switching gear around to have more defense and do more damage if you are like me and prefer playing efficiently rather than stylishly. Luckily, mismatched sets of gear don't look bad together, and there are ways to upgrade sets of gear that aren't feasible to wear anymore at the blacksmith (just note that the cost of resources and drachmae, the in-game currency, may not be worth the effort if you know you're going to pick up something almost as good in the next half hour).

To iterate on this being a "numbers game," as mentioned earlier: enemies can have a baffling amount of HP compared to you on the game's hardest difficulties, which makes the early game both frustrating and more fun. What makes it frustrating is the knowledge that one mistake could cost you 90% of your health bar if you're fighting something, or someone, a few levels above you with one attack. Fortunately, the game's combat system is surprisingly simple, yet effective at learning quickly. The best advice I can think to give for the early game is to get your parry-timing down, the game's combat lives and dies by your reflexes. Nothing is overly unfair if you play the game normally and aren't looking to try fighting things tens of levels above you (a certain Cyclops I encountered comes to mind). The game can feel bloated thanks to enemies having a lot of health, even with the level scaling set to "default". If Ubisoft made things have less HP in the next Assassin's Creed, it would certainly be an improvement, as the way things are, leveling feels unsatisfying when nothing is really below your level, only above it.

I found the open world in this game to be decent, though it is designed in a way that could use a lot of improvement. It's too big, simply put. There's only so much variation you can do with a world of this size, and it shows; there's lot of gorgeous, yet empty land for Alexios to walk across. This is aided by the game's acoustic guitar-laden score, but knowing you're probably going to trek over another hill to find another cave with the same assets as the last six you visited ruins what could have been a far, better experience had Ubisoft gone for a more focused game map. What breaks up the monotony is the game's wildlife and enemies, often you'll see bears fighting lions out in the wild, only for some soldier to stroll by and get attacked. The game's world, for our current generation of consoles, can certainly feel alive at times, despite the emptiness. Shooting deer, and hunting other animals makes traversing ancient Greece more fun, but it's still a band-aid on a wound that doesn't have to be there with a little more work on Ubisoft's part. Enemy camps are fun to dismantle but it wasn't long before I started feeling as if I was doing the same thing over and over again. This is helped out by the player progression of the game; using ability points to learn and improve skills gives players new and fun ways to dispatch enemies, be it through stealth, or range, or running in to start a brawl.

The variety of quests shares a similar issue as above; there is a problem with variety, but dialogue is on-point and often funny. It's a game that gives great first impressions but holds up less and less as you keep playing it. Since writing, I've played Origins and am saddened that this was basically a downgrade in every way. Play Origins instead.

By trying to make the next Witcher 3, Ubisoft went away from what fans loved about their games to make a watered down RPG experience. While Assassin's Creed has always had supernatural plot points, most of the world and gameplay was still grounded in historical realism. I bought it and I can firmly say it is my least favorite assassin's creed game and by far one of the laziest rpgs I've ever played. This is not an 'assassin's' game. People say this all the time because it is true. It is a knock off witcher that fails in all aspects compared to the witcher. All the enemies are sponges, you get barely any experience (in hopes that this will push you to buy the time savers created by crappy corporate Ubisoft), and they're all the same recycled enemies. The Open world is beautiful but empty. The naval combat is annoying and tedious and does not have the same charm Black flag did. The rpg elements are weak and lazy especially the loot system. It feels like God of War (2018) system which was probably the biggest detriment to that game. However the story is the worst apsect of this game. I've never played a AAA game with such crappy voice acting till now. Hell, even Mass effect Andromeda had better voice acting. Alexios and Kassandra sound horrible and the other characters are grating. The comedy is immature and are practically Dad jokes, and the story is one of the worst stories i've ever seen. It takes a basic premise and somehow fails to accomplish anything meaningful with it. Kassandra and Alexios are both stale characters as the protagonist but shine as Demos. You see Ubisoft was lazy with Kassandra and didn't want to vary her story from Alexios to truly show what happened to women in Greece instead it feels more like a skin. You pick the protagonist skin by which one you like more and nothing changes. The story had so many cut out points and the hidden blade dlc should've been in the main game in the first place. Romance is worse than even the crappiest Bioware games because they're practically one night stands with no attachement to any of the characters. In addition to this I felt not attachement to any of the characters in this game. Not only due to crappy writing but because of how spaced out the story missions were. By the time I wanted to do a story quest 5-15 hours had already passed since I did the last one. Side quests were glorified fetch quests or bounty quests which everyone already hates. I cannot see how people think this game is superior to origins, which not only had fun combat with enemies that were not sponges, a great story, other than some glaring plotholes, and the crappy modern day, and an amazing protagonist. Odyssey, however, fails in all aspects. It had a crappy protagonist, a horrible modern day, a horrible story, and many plot holes, and horrible combat. They want this game to be the next witcher, it never will be. Expand

The gameplay was tight and the addition of sailing your own ship was a lot of fun. Not only that, you had decent storytelling, a brilliant soundtrack and some amazing environments. It felt like this was the right direction for the franchise.

Take us now to 2018, with the release of Assassins Creed Oddyssey. From years of trial and error, Ubisoft decides to throw that out the window and make a whole new experience, using the same franchise. Here enters a poor mans take on Witcher 3. A game that takes place in a stupendously massive map, where every island, town and NPC is exactly the same. It was like the world was made by copy and pasting the same assets. The story was fairly simple; travel across Greece in a quest to find your parents, with a lot of distractions in between. My issue was that almost every character you come across, is void of personality or likeability. Even the protagonist that you're playing as, has an air of arrogance that becomes irritating. I found myself skipping the vast amounts of dialogue, when talking to any of these characters, as they never had anything interesting to say. Some of the coice acting in this game, is what I had the biggest issue with. There are a few characters that sounded like the meerkats from the adverts. But the worst of them all is thhe brother in this game. He sounds like a really cheesy baddy from an old Bond film. It was so cringe, I had to turn he volume down whenever he spoke. These draw backs are what stopped me from liking this game. And by the time I got to the end, I was treated to an ending that did not justify the amount of hours it took to get there.

The gameplay is the one thing that kept me going with his game but even then, it was a mess. Each area is segregated by level; if you're a level 24 but walk into an area that is for level 30, then you're screwed. Even the wildlife will destroy you. I found this very frustrating, as the game funnelled me down one specific path, where I had to do serious grinding to progress to the next part. This game is a checklist of chores and it sucks the fun out of it. It's a problem that Ubisoft have in all of their games. That sense of grinding with repetitive tasks, in order to progress to the next level.

I found this game deeply flawed and one of the weaker games of the franchise. I wish Ubisoft had taken the Black Flag formula and made a game that was the best of them all, but instead we're now playing a poor mans RPG, with equally mediocre writing and gameplay.

I have never played a game with a world as big as Odyssey's yet feel so empty.

You could explore, but it's just boring. The mythical creature fights were a solid, fun challenge but what wasn't were ordinary citizens and their dumb A.I. as well as the flawed mercenary system. RPG elements aside, Odyssey just wasn't as fun as its predecessor, and in terms of characters and story Odyssey at least helped me to enjoy Bayek and his personal journey in Origins some more. The game certainly looks pretty, but the sound and music don't offer much to enhance your experience with the game.

Overall, Odyssey is a statement that Ubisoft should go back to its roots with Assassin's Creed and its combat and story that helped to define our generation.

I don't know how much time I spent looting and selling/dismantling loot in this game. Not even a big MMO dungeon has so much loot as AC Odyssey has in like 5 minutes of clearing a camp. I feel a little sad that the AC games have shifted towards a spam attack buttons and loot game. I hope that in the feature games they put more effort in combat and storytelling because otherwise I am skipping future AC games. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really weak writing. The game tries to incorporate dialogue decisions and consequences into the game but it's so poorly executed that it makes all of the story dialogues feel awkward. The RPG elements are kind of fun but I felt like way too much focus was put into turning this into an RPG at the sacrifice of the writing. Assassin's Creed used to be about immersing you into an important historical period you understand and see the politics of the viewpoints of the time. That gets lost in this game as they try to let you play for both Athens and Sparta. All of the side characters are just super awkward and poorly written. Bring back the assassin's and templars and historical storylines. Expand

If you liked Origins but thought it had a too plausible story and too little level scaling and you LOVE to grind, this game may just be for you. If you are more like me, the game is just good enough to not stop playing. (After all, I couldn't return it anyway, thanks ubisoft -.-)

I'm generally not a fan of levelscaling, but in Origins it was less annoying. To make it bearable I advise to get a trainer and use an exp multiplier to get yourself to the max level. This takes most of the stupid level mechanics out of the way. If this was not possible, I would have stopped playing and gave this a way worse rating.
Visually the game is quite good and the gameplay is, besides grinding, mostly entertaining. The main story is mostly entertaining, with some really stupid moments in there. The sidequests are just garbage, ignore them.

    Regarding the DLCs:
    - The atlantis one feels a bit too similar to the Origins DLC and has some questionable story moments, but besides that is quite entertaining. I think I liked it more than the main game.
    - I didn't like the legacy of the first blade. I disliked the story, some main characters and the pretense of choice. In most situations what I wanted to do was not allowed by the game / story and some theoretically important "choices" were rendered meaningless by imo lazy plot devices.

    > 1 I made it to level 30-ish and was doing mostly side stuff

    > 1 where I watched my girlfriend play through the Kassandra storyline, on PC with 8x XP (using a trainer).

    > Given that I've played it for that amount of hours and bought it at 50% off, I'd say that there's plenty of value for money, but I would not recommend it at full price.

    Positives
    --------------

    > Honeymoon period lasts 10-15h before you start to notice glaring issues

    > Map is big, if you're a fan of just exploring and seeing pretty landscapes it's worth wandering around. The first time you zoom out of the map, it blows your mind

    > There are various different systems in place* - the Sparta vs Athens war, the Cult, the mercenaries, etc.

    > There's an abundance of loot with different rarities and appearance

    > There's a decent skill tree to be explored

    > Recruiting crew for your ship is fun.

    > Some of the choices are pretty good and have interesting results

    > Almost no Abstergo

    Negatives
    ---------------

    > Story is AWFUL - when I figured out who your father is and what he is doing I almost quit the game. Laughably bad sci-fi fanfiction story writing

    > The accents of characters are horrible

    > Padding - the game nerfs your progression and you're forced to do mundane, busywork, copy-pasted side content

    > In a game called "Assassin's Creed", you should always be able to assassinate someone while sneaking (with the exceptions of bosses). When you sneak on an NPC while they sleep, you should be able to kill them while in stealth, not just deal a moderate amount of damage and wake them up.

    > Traversal is horrible - the horse feels like a soulless mechanic, just get on it, set a waypoint, and let it take you there. The ship is boring and at times you get attacked by pirates or whatever while trying to get to your location. It's very annoying.

    > The gear drops all the time, legendary gear does not feel special or earned since it's so commonly found.

    > The combat is the worst in AC history. It's so tiring, repetitive and goofy. You end up rolling and running around like a moron, just waving your swords around ridiculously.

    >*The mechanics that I mentioned do not connect meaningfully to the entirety of the game and just feel slapped on the game with no point, just to have it.

    > Romance options are very weird and feel tacked on > I'd prefer a more developed (male or female) character instead of 2 really bland main character options > Every time the sci-fi elements are brought in, I hated it > Historic personalities are just slapped in there like a celebrity cameo in a sitcom > Camera is too far away and make the character look tiny. When heavily geared up he looks like a chunk of metal jumping and rolling around.

Parkour is terribly bad and almost nonexistent. Instead of parkour we got "climbing". Micro-transactions shouldn't even by in a single-player game, but you can skip them by doing side quests which can be fun and full of interesting stories. On the other hand some are very one dimensional. Another thing is that facial expressions have been the worst I have ever seen in an assassin's creed game. They are horrible and sometimes even funny.

Kassandra/Alexios has such an interesting backstory. It starts extremely good and continues that way up until the end. Deimos just goes from good to bad just like that. They didn't even try to make him redeem himself. He just goes from a bloodthirsty demigod to a family oriented person out of nowhere. Choices they present to us are not working very well. They just mess up the main character. One time he is a mercenary, then he is a Spartan, then Athenian, one time he is a merciless killer and next time he cares about everyone. The main character just loses any identity it has. I also think they made a mistake having three different endings, because it feels very fragmented.

Overall it is not a bad game. I really liked it, but it has way too many flaws. Also the game is very long, so I wouldn't recommend playing DLCs and main story in one go. I just got frustrated and tried to finish the game ASAP, because with DLCs it took me like 80 hours to finish.

If you don’t do this, you probably will have a hard time doing for example the boat story missions. Even story mode is grinding, kill cultist, kill cultist, and next one and next one etc etc etc.
The game also tries to have a dialogue system like Witcher where the outcome is different based on what you choose in the dialogues, however the cutscenes and the dialogues seems kind of cheap and not well made. It tries but comes short.

It's not fun skill based combat but rather grinding till you get the right gear or are many levels above the creature.

At the end of the day, the progress through the story feels more like a grind than an adventure. The game itself is beautiful and at times comes close to being gratifying but falls short every time. This can be exemplified by how awesome it is just jump off synchronization points until you've done it 348 times because the map is too large and the quests are too disjointed. It's a chore to play through and the combat forces you into specific playstyles that are even then not-skill intensive.

Basically you 're going to play with a "cyborg styled character" for dozens of hours, which is unbearable for me, and breaks completely the immersion.

From a game design point of view, it just appears that UBi don't know exactly what they are doing, and try evidently to mix several features in their games, just to make them look different for the players, because they all look basically the same : FarCry , AC, Ghost Recon, Watchdogs, you name it, it is always the same game with just a diiffernt place, at a different time, but it definitely always play the same boring and repetitive gameplay. Now they try to go the RPG route but even Mass Effect 1 did it better in this department. It's just meh in every aspect.

They tried to rip of Witcher 3 with this new AC style but failed to capture the magic. The side missions get boring very fast. It's the usual Ubisoft formula where you just clear out nameless enemies a 100 times in each region. I never finished Origins because I got bored of this. Luckily I just rented this game to try out before buy. Looks like AC is finished. They should have just created a new IP for this and Origins because it's certainly not AC anymore. To put it in a nutshell, my personal rating would be: 61/100 -> 6/10 considering the game as itself. But due to the fact that it is a part of a franchise I combine it with my personal rating and come to a total of 4.5/10.

    Explanation:
LAYLA IS NOT MY ISSUE with the modern day story. You have a ton of new characters without any character development, no real link to William Miles in Origins and just illogical explanations in order to force gameplay mechanics into a franchise that was build up against those.

This game fulfilled all my worst fears and I am so sad for those who worked on the great world that got ruined by the story itself.

So why the two stars? Well, so much of this game is copy and pasted from Origins! It is far too similar, as if they literally reskinned characters, towns and missions from Origins and somehow did a bad job of it. There is not a lot of new content here really.

That been said, I could have understood the lack of new content since this was released a year after Origins, but it seems a year was not enough time to make new content but was ample time to shove in microtransactions within microtransactions! To save you and I time, just look up Jim Sterling's Jimpressions on YouTube for this game. He gives more detail. They have also made the game slower and more grindy to encourage people to PAY MORE MONEY to progress through the game faster.

Absolutely ridiculous. Avoid this tosh that isn't worth £20, never mind the ludicrous prices Ubisoft want you to pay. I've given up hope for this franchise now. It was one step forward and five steps back.

The game is pumped full of microtransactions. It really is a grind to finish it and everytime you open the menu and even in some loading screens its urging you to pay for some exp booster or for some stupid legendary item.
It amazes me that they sell SEVEN different editions and still pump the game full of these damn microtransactions. Shame on you Ubisoft.

Also the romance options are forced and sometimes really creepy. They shouldve kept them out of the game, AC isnt an RPG.

Im returning this game tomorrow, dont buy this for more then 20 bucks.

This game needs rework. Lots of it. The water effects... omg, please fire your developers. Voice of characters go out of sync randomly. Choppy movements. The main characters move robotically. The action animation is soo repetitive. I thought Origins was repetitive but this here is far worse. Origins was gorgeous. Not perfect, but it sure was worth 8 or 9 stars out of ten. I liked the story line and was genuinely intrigued by some truly inspired side quests. But I just couldn't justify continuing out the game when it's core mechanics had so quickly gone stale. Ubisoft has clearly grown in the their storytelling. I can only hope they'll one day be able to make the gameplay in this series just as interesting. Expand

I absolutely loathe this game, and this is coming from someone who adored the previous entry, Assassin's Creed Origin. Whereas certain improvements were made in this installment, ultimately Greece is a step down from Egypt.

Presentation: While the texture work is fine, the water effects are stunning, and the draw distance is a sight to behold, it's difficult to shake the feeling that the environments seem to be copy and pasted. From grasslands to indistinguishable cities, there is never a sense of the regional diversity which characterized Origins so well. It's always seemingly dense forests with the same classical Greek style marble buildings with mosaic flooring. These were far and away the least interesting section of Egypt in Origins. Memphis had narrow sandy pathways that interject with water canals and in the distance is the gorgeously rendered Temple of Isis. Nothing was notable about Greece's environments other than the Aegean Sea.

Gameplay: This is also a massive step down. In Origins, if enemy types difficulty level was parallel to your ranking, they can be taken out in three or four strikes. In Odyssey it can take upwards to ten strikes due to the expanded RPG mechanics. Furthermore animations and combat are unbearably stiff, more so than Origins. The new bounty system which procedurally generates new bounty hunters made the once exciting encounters with Phylakes into laborious chores where, if contending with an enemy camp and caught, five bounty hunters come out of thin air to make an already tedious combat system borderline unbearable. On the plus side the spartan kick is amusing and ship to ship combat is exciting.

Story: Conceptually the story is rather decent, especially when the central antagonist is unveiled. The central problem lies in presentation. The voice acting is abysmal, the animations are universally laughable. Compared to the Witcher 3 which balances algorithmic dialogue sequences with handcrafted motion captured sequences, mostly everything in Assassin's Creed Odyssey's presentation is unremarkable and dull.

Leveling: Far and away the worst issue plaguing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, leveling up in this game requires players to complete as many side quests as possible in order to push the central story forward. What's worse is that players can buy XP points with real money in order to allow players to "skip the grind". This design decision was intentional and it's there for the sole purpose of extorting as much money from it's player base as possible. It's an insidious practice that deserves culpability from the larger community.

Overall, this is a mediocre game in an otherwise excellent year for gaming.

Very disappointing experience. I do not want to go much into detail as I would be just repeating other players, but basically this is not game what you would expect in the end of 2018.

Story is really bad, non-existent, uninteresting, badly scripted. The whole drive of AC franchise has disappeared, mostly because of lack of Assassins and Templars. This game is called Assassins Creed but You, as player, do not belong to any fraction. You are just mercenary who in his attempt for vengeance is fighting randomly for Athens or Sparta with no core drives. Main quests and also side quests are very repetitive, offering no challenge or innovative approach. All actions are mostly limited to “go there, kill somebody, come back, but it is not enough, you need to return back where you came from and bring something else”.

AC franchise was mostly interesting for its illuminati-like narrative, retelling history, legends and myths in its own and very original way through eyes of secret organizations operating behind main events in human history. But this aspect is hugely missing making entire story very boring and history turned upside down just to serve sick political and race correctness in slavery states in acient Greece.

Except the story, the gameplay is literally disaster. It never happened to me on any console that any game was freezing or lagging as AC:Oddysey does. Graphics and animation compared to Horizon Zero Dawn from 2017 or God of War from early 2018 is on lowest level.

Combat system based on levels is also very painful and poorly designed, making it nearly impossible to defeat character even 1 level above you (3 levels above are marked with red skull). This strips any challenge on any difficulty and chance to defeat your enemies just with your playing skills. You basically need to be correct level to proceed to locations or even main story, what brings me to next point.

Hated microtransaction, yes, they are plenty and players are rightfully angry about it. Oddysey is not cheap game, not even in most basic edition without all DLCs and bonus content, and still Ubisoft is forcing players to spend another 20 EUR for some “Time savers” to get right amount of experience and game currency so you can continue in main story without running around and completing repetitive side quests.

But worst of worst is loading time of game which is amazingly long. Especially in age of eliminating loading time to minimum, in this game you will get longest loading time between in-game cutscenes and gameplay I have ever seen. The worst it is when you wait several minutes to load cutscene which is couple seconds long and then you wait another minutes to get back to gameplay. Fast Travel option just lost all meaning when travelling by by foor is qicker than using fast travel option with insane loading time.

All in all, I need to acknowledge size of this world and plenty of side quests and characters. I would say that main reason behind all microtransactions is that 60 USD is not real price of this game, rather 100 USD in basic edition, thanks to its enormity. However, poor combat system and terrible gameplay experience make it one of the worst games I ever bought.

    1. Open world video game.

Repeatable and boring game. Nothing new, terrible story. You have to complete 300-400 identical locations - kill 10-20 mobs, loot chests, rinse and repeat.

Ubisoft took Origins a made everything worse. Boring camps with reused assets (legitimately every camp looks the same), terrible bounty system, non-functional stealth, bullet sponge enemies, useless bow, grindy as hell. Story is slightly better than Origins, which isn't saying much. Some sidequests are cool.

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

If someone had told me couple of years ago that Assassin’s Creed would become a full-fledged action RPG that would not look out of place on a shelf next to The Witcher 3, I would have snickered. But here I am, over 80 hours into Odyssey and still unable to believe that really happened. [12/2018, p.44]

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
