Character animations (running) are cheap and awful. Combat system is boring, even the older combat system made more fun. Story is mediocre. Voice acting sucks because of the accent. I'm a super big Assassin's Creed fan and I love Ezio and the all the old games. Odyssey? Sorry, but no. Ubisoft = Quantity over quality nowadays. If the next AC won't be different the franchise is dead for me. Expand

This definitley one game you need in your collection. It has action, fighting, puzzles and very good story, the game play is right on point and the controls follow as well. The Assassin's Creed collection has gone through numerous story's and times in the past, and with every game the improvement is shown. Looking forward to the next installment! Must have!

However. I can say that with a lot of assurance, not just the hype of them oment.
Assassins creed odyssey has been the best assassins creed game I ever played!!!

I love the game, the more freedom of choices, something I understand didn't exist in previous games, but I like it now.

I love the combat, the parry, the skills and passives added.
I love the naval battles brought back
I love the athens sparta war, and how you can influence who controls a region, it is so fun.
and of the best features is the enhanced mercenary system from origins. I love h ow they hunt you down if you become notorious. I love how they try to mess with you even when you are doing other quests or other afairs, it adds so much more depths and longevity to the game!!

    Well done ubisoft, well done!

All this build up to a finale which ends in two women sobbing, other endings are also complete garbage. You don't care much about the characters at all. Seems like they stuffed too many women characters in the game too. I'm a female gamer and don't understand why they keep forcing women characters in the game that are so boring and historically inaccurate. It's an ok game, but the story will greatly disappointe you. I loved fighting Medusa and lions and bears. I loved that I could tame animals and have them fight by my side. I loved I could go underwater and fight sharks and swim next to a giant whale. This game has so many epic moments. But it is a grind and it can get repetitive. I haven't played any of the DLC but I beat the main game. I don't like how all these games are charging extra for DLC's these days.. And one last thing. The game did freeze three times in total on my PS4 Slim. I played the game over 100 hours so its not a big issue but it's something to mention. And all three times it started freezing when I was surrounded by a lot of enemies at a fort. I think the game was trying to keep track of too many enemies at once. Also the pointless micro transactions aren't needed at all in this game. You can earn all the best armor and weapons in game. That's a great thing actually. The bad thing is the XP Booster... If it wasn't for the freezing and XP Booster/pointless micro transactions I would give this game a 9.5/10 Also you can play on easy, medium and hard difficulty. I played on easy because the game is level gated. Playing on easy allows you to beat enemies a couple levels above you. On medium and hard you can't really. So in my opinion playing on easy can be easy but it can also be hard if you try to fight enemies a couple levels above you. I beat Medusa at level 46. It took me 45 minutes. So it just depends on how you want to play. I like that the game gives you this kind of flexibility. . 8/10 Expand

I thought that developers had got the point after last years debacle.

Gamer's DO NOT buy games with these micro transactions in. it's not good enough to buy a game and simply ignore the MTs! They will grow with each release. Just look at orgins, it slipped in and now they are slowly notching it up the boosts etc. its slow creep. don't fall for it!

These games do not need to make there game worse but adding this balance breaking nonsense into single player games, increase the ticket price by £10 if you really need and give a full balanced experience.

From now on it should be known as called Assassins Greed.

I like Kassandra, if she were real I’d pee my pants but still be a bit in love, so good job. I like exploring too much so I’m not too far in the story but it’s okay so far.

Considering what other AC’s have been like (I haven’t played Origins yet, mind you) this is about as much fun for me as Black Flag although I miss hunting big fish, animal hunting is a bit meh (even Legendary beasts), ship wars are less fun although boarding is much better with the improved engine. Yeah I recommend it but I’ll admit it could be better. The map is huge btw, so no need to go bigger next time, it just leads to more unused space or space for mindless sidequests. Leveling should go much faster with the current cap and considering it’s a full price AAA game (got the gold edition...) I don’t like that buying an XP boost was a good idea if you catch my drift.

Edit: and the modern day story sucks and definitely doesn’t make the game more fun. Ubisoft should finally, finally get some balls and drop it. It’s just holding Assassin’s Creed games back since at least Black Flag, which is the first AC I played.

The open world and story are the only thing this game has going for it and that has become pretty worn out, especially after the last title gave hope that this series might become good again. Edit: The story starts of good but ends in dissapointment and headscratching, just awful. And speaking of open world, the lighting in this game is just complete and utter trash.
Combat barely works right, generally be happy if the game actually responds to inputs. So when you play on nightmare and everything has to be timed properly have fun. Especially against Boss type enemies you realize that the developer never considered how this would work with their combat system. Plenty of attacks are entirely undogable, you can't doge with the short version and staying on the button takes longer than the time between start and execution of their attack. Loads of fun. Even against normal enemies the combat is somewhere between annoying and boring. At least in origins it was something new, and it was definitely better than this. Combat for the most part is simply designed to be frustrating and take as long as possible. This game is a waste of time on every level.
The ships could have been a fun feature but combat is boring, like a worse version of the fourth game, and customization laughable.
Fighting the games version of the Templars is pretty boring and by the numbers with no effort to make it more engaging and interesting.
And the fact that you can't control your horses speed is a very small thing, but it is just grating after a while.
Stealth play is also ruined in this game, since you can't even kill most normal enemies with assassionations and definitely not your targets. So you always end up having all out fights with all guards and mercenaries around, or pick them off one by one which to me was always an incredibly boring way to do it.
This whole thing is basically as fancy walking simulator, although even most of those are a more interesting experience than this game. And to all the people giving this a good rating, you're the reason we can't have nice things. The reason crap like this gets produced over and over again in the laziest way possible.

There was just enough of the Greek mythology sprinkled into the game while making sure to tie it all into the AC lore to make sense.

Enormous, breathtakingly beautiful open world of Ancient Greece - untold hours of land, ocean and islands to explore, with compelling challenges sprinkled in with the missions. Everything that was a bit boring about Origins has been shaved off. No more boring dialogue. This is the first AC that's got me truly addicted since Black Flag. Addictvely awesome. Expand

I started the game on hard and while I did play through a rough experience at first, I only encountered impossible scenarios as I progressed. More often than not, I had to 'cheese' my way through enemy encampments just to progress the story. Being 1 level under an enemy leader, my assassinations did little damage and my swords acted as feather dusters. I attempted to lower my difficulty from hard to medium, then to easy, and enduring the god awfully long loading screens that come with this process. At the end easy proved no different from hard. Enemy count was not reduced and my feathered dusters were only slightly upgraded in damage to nerf swords. Even before this broken levelling system pushed me over the edge I was frustrated with the camera and controls. WHY is getting off your horse a different button than getting on it!? Even after trying to remap the controls, and fighting with conflicts, did I still not get the desired effect. I would give this game 2 points for world design and textures... If I could even zoom in the camera to see more of my character and the world around me but no, it is fixed far behind the player. The writing is also god awful. The characters outside of the animus are more lifeless than the simulations it recreates. I dare anyone to get through the first cutscene (after the MANDATORY first battle) and not cringe. The characters have no depth and the starting story is easily dismissible. The side missions, storywise, are pointless. I have never played the bad guy in a game before, but because of my growing frustrations with Odyssey, I always chose to make life hell for anyone I encountered in the game. This should not be considered a triple A title... It lacks too many features included by other studios and is a tremendous letdown. Save your money, replay black flag or Origins. Expand

A buggy, yet fun game. Currently I deal with situations where the game begins to drop to 2 frames a second, and skips through combat. This makes the game unplayable, but other than that, It is an enjoying game to play when it works.

There is a lot to like about this game and there are some things to dislike about it. I liked about 90% of what the game had to offer. To name a few things such as the mythical beats, battling Medusa (the hardest boss battle I came across in the game), conquest battles, the addition of the spartan kick was great especially when you upgrade it, and taking down the cult members (I completed the main story mission with about 13 or so cult members left and I could not end the game without taking down the cult members) were some things I enjoyed amongst other things. However, for the 10% here is what I did not like:
    1) There was a lot of delayed textures as I am sure many players have experienced this.
    2) You have several abilities to choose from, but you can only choose 4 warrior/assassin abilities and 4 hunter abilities. To me this was kind of a disappointment as you are limited on what you can choose.
    3) Enemy AI is dumb.
    4) The game does get repetitive after awhile after doing countless side quests, taking down forts, camps, caves, ships, etc.

Overall, I was really satisfied with Odyssey and didn't think it would be this good due to it releasing a year after Origins as I thought they would have rushed it. The detailed story was hard for me to keep track of because they mention a lot of people with fancy names and I'm like who is that again and what did they do? With all of this being said I'm looking forward to see what the next Assassin's Creed game will bring us.

    COMBAT AND STEALTH
It has six different weapons and a bow. In the addition, also ship combat is good (but Black Flag is better of course). the enemies can be found some easy and some hard. Then, it cannot assassin everyone completely but it'll takes a lot of damage, thanks to the ability is helpful. Unfortunately, parkour is pretty easy for old AC gamers.

    GRAPHIC AND MAPS
The graphic is truly beautiful, thanks to Greek accident maps. In the addition, the maps is pretty bigger than I thought. I have spent 50 hours for beating about 50% of full completion. Have some bugs, of course for Ubisoft.

    VERDICT
It's worth to explore and combat. At the main point, if you think The Witcher 3 is still the best. I suggest you shouldn't have it.

Great story and game in general, it is hard to get bored of the game, always eager to continue and know what is next. Graphics are perfect with a huge map.

Unfortunately this game is not a 10/10 due to its fighting, spamming special attacks and R1 and R2 is not the greatest idea, in my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay, firstly: This is an overall okay game with a great world, environments and (except for jittering faces) pristine graphics. But it could've been a LOT better and after 60hrs of play I can't feel but left disappointed by the lazy writing.

Ubisoft, you wasted a lot of potential. You should have decided to either go full AC or keep that stuff out of a historical/mythical RPG. Either way, you would've earned a lot of money. It just doesn't mesh well.

Note: I personally didn't like the "typical" previous AC games but that's just preference.

Let me start off with the positive aspects:

. Like I said, the environment is really stunning. The architecture, towns, landscape. The water animation is the best I've seen in games.
. The richness and vastness of the world
. Barnabas, Sokrates, Brasidas, Herodotus and Phoibe and Kassandra are standing out as personalities above all and carry the game experience for me as far as characters go
. Some of the side quests are actually really interesting, especially the Mykonos storyline!

    Now...the negative aspects:

. Above all, the main storyline. You set out to find your family which is interesting enough at the start, but once you find your mother, it's all about Deimos/Alexios. And let me tell you - he is a horribly designed protagonist and incredibly stupid. He is a willing, brainless puppet for the Cult (only talking about being "their strongest champion") and your mother is only concerned about getting him back.
In the good ending, you do, after he wants to kill you he quickly changes his mind once he sees your spear. W-T-F. Were the creative directors high when they wrote that? This ending actually felt so terrible, overly cheesy, unbelievable and wrong.

. The present day story breaks you out of the immersion at the worst timings, along with a heavily annoying and unlikeable character called Layla and her boring and stiff doctor friend. Ubisoft would've been better off making this a purely historical / mystical game a la Witcher and not lean it on AC. But I guess they didn't have the guts to deviate from their moneymaker.

Once you find your "real father" as Kassandra (never gets explained how he possibly could be your father since he seems to stay in that cave since he found it, plothole alert) and Atlantis, it goes steeply downhill from there...the writing literally couldn't be worse. I was so disappointed from what I've got after I brought the artifacts back.

. The grinding for resources and gold to upgrade your legendary gear constantly is reminding me of the grind of MMOs. I've been playing a lot of RPGs and MMOs as well and this is...just bad.

. The level gap in between main story quests or Cult members literally forces you to do level grinding on the side, and a lot of it. The worst part of this is that it gets super repetitive, not like in the Witcher where side quests were a joy to do - apart from that, the level gaps were not that bad and it felt really fluent in other games. Or you go buy their "micro" transactions (which are super expensive), and even I ended up getting a gold boost because I was getting so annoyed at the constant upgrading costs. I'm okay with micro transactions if a game is great, but the cost along with the grind of resources and level gaps were too much for me to cut Ubisoft some slack.

. The repetitive quests like clearing out forts, clearing bandit camps etc etc. You will get sick of it, believe me. It wouldn't have harmed to put mystical creatures earlier on in the game, since that was honestly the most fun and challenging part! (Sphinx & Co.)

. You could make choices, but it didn't really seem to have a big impact overall. There was no way of really shaping your surroundings. There was a lot of violence in game - yet all romances were pretty boring and censored. The one on Mykonos was great as a story, but after you left and came back it was like nothing happened.

So overall a 6.5, I just can't give in between ratings.
This could've been an EPIC game with more effort; better writing and storytelling, more variety in combat/enemies, more characters that leave an impression (and a more likeable Layla if you want to keep her so bad), less of the present day nonsense - and cutting out a lot of the grinding and filler content. Shorter but sweeter is most of the time better.

I enjoyed the combat and wide variety of weapons and armor. The graphics are fantastic with one of the longest draw distances I've seen. The missions were fairly varied and some had short, interesting side story arcs. Though nothing ground-break, the story was interesting enough to make me pause whatever TV show I had going in the background at the time, which isn't bad. The game is well-made and polished; I found very few problems or glitches, even when I had gotten myself into a crazy situation that I would expect and accept a freeze or something.

Reading the negative comments, I find most of them are displeased about two primary areas: microtransactions and the gameplay style. There are microtransactions in the game, which I don't love, but these are in no way necessary. I never felt like leveling was too slow or that I needed to purchase anything to advance the game. There are scores of weapons and armor already available.
If one just doesn't like the fact that microtransactions exist, then they might be unhappy. Personally, I didn't even notice them since I never opened the store menu in the game.

Perhaps the title should be "Assassin's Creed Presents" because there isn't actually much traditional assassination, but the gameplay and graphics are clearly assassins creed, and it does link in with the whole 'exploring the past through genetic memory' thing. Instead, this is a huge, open-world RPG.

Every game has room for improvement of course, but the main complaint: paying for micro-transactions or need to grind is in my opinion over the top.

I've played this game for some time now, and not for a moment did I have the feeling that I needed to grind to level. What might set me apart from most reviewers is that this is the first AC game I've ever played. Maybe the game doesn't fit enough in the AC brand and divert from the previous games. I don't know, and honestly, I don't care. Like I said, in and of itself, the game is not bad.

To sum up the things I liked most: beautiful graphics, which even on my not top notch GTX1060 run fluent almost the entire time. An interesting and motivating main quest line, with enough fun side quests to keep me from boredom. A plethora of items and interaction, including quite realistic horse riding (contrary to vertical movement in Skyrim for example) and controlling several kinds of boats up to your own galley.

Conclusion: good immersion, good quests, good graphics and not a single urge to pay Ubisoft an extra cent to speed up the game.

With Ubisoft games, expect a lot of repetition in gameplay, systems and mission structure. What sold me is the setting. I was absolutely into Greek mythology as a kid in the 90s and have watched so many Greek movies growing up (Jason and the Argonauts, Hercules, Xena, Troy, 300, stop-motion skeletons). AC:Odyssey was like a childhood dream come to life! I was so enthralled by the sights and sounds, the whole Greek world, the legendary creatures, the historical figures, the monuments, everything! Also, Greece is such a wonderful and beautiful world to explore for me as I love the hills, mountains, ocean, beaches and green locations.

The last AC I played, Origins, was bland to me cos I was never a fan or Egyptian mythology and setting. So the constant sand and desert areas were very dull and uninteresting for me, dampening my motivation to explore. Ended up rushing through the main story in about 30hrs.

Odyssey on the other hand was a journey I enjoyed from start to end. The main story is also very well developed and engaging. I played as Kassandra and she is a much much better protagonist than Bayek. I loved all the side characters and some side missions made me genuinely laugh out loud.

The RPG mechanics introduced are much better here than in Origins, although I hope it can be more like Skyrim or Witcher levels of detail in the future. I liked the dialogue choices and consequences introduced, but it could be developed even deeper.

I loved the legendary weapons and armor sets, with all the unique skills that come with it. It's definitely a fun game to play.

I took one point off for not having a deep lore/history system. I would like to have a Codex entry giving detailed history of Greece's locations, characters, weapons, culture, people, etc. That would have helped players who enjoy reading codex entries more appreciation for the main plot and the world in general, like in Witcher, Skyrim, Mass Effect, Dragon Age. Also, I thought there would be a Discovery Tour like in Origins but to my disappointment, there isn't.

Overall, I absolutely loved Odyssey. Brilliant game by Ubisoft and that was something I did not expect. Ubisoft games, I now realize, are about the world setting. If you're into it, you'll definitely have a blast. So it was for me in Wildlands ( loved Netflix's Narcos) and Odyssey (loved Greek mythology) and AC2 (loved Gladiator, HBO's Rome).

Absolutely play this if you're a fan of Greek culture.

As someone whose interest in AC had lapsed some years ago, I was dubious about playing Odyssey, but as a sucker for history, I was pulled in by the ancient Greece setting. Having now spent 100 hours playing the game, I can say that it has been a pleasant surprise and left me looking forward to seeing what future AC installments will offer.

Odyssey is interesting in that it seems to be transitioning AC away from being a pure third person action game and into a more RPG focused style of game, with leveling, gearing, and skill progression systems to customise your gameplay experience. its is clear that Ubisoft have taken significant design cues from The Witcher 3 for many of Odyssey's gameplay and narrative elements, so if you enjoyed Witcher 3, Odyssey is likely to scratch the same itch, even if it is not of the same quality as TW3.

On the narrative side, the story is surprisingly engaging and kept me interested throughout the 80hrs I spent on the main campaign. While it is hardly revolutionary in terms of storytelling, it clearly shows that Ubisoft are trying new things by including dual protagonists, dialogue choices, and romance subplots. While it never manages to execute any of these things with the same level of skill as Bioware, CDPR, or Obsidian, it nonetheless shows that the devs are trying to evolve the series to increase player agency, which is a good thing, IMO.

From a value standpoint, AC: Odyssey is an excellent proposition with a lengthy (40+hrs) main campaign, and huge amounts of side content to do, including killing a series of mythical beasts of Greek legend, an arena gladiatorial contest, ship battles, a mercenary system vaguely reminiscent of the Nemesis system in Mordor, as well as other features that would be spoilers. If anything, there is almost too many systems in the game and it might have benefited from having fewer systems with more depth given to the best of those features. In any case, you will not lack for things to do at any stage.

My only real complaints are the technical performance, and the grind walls that you occasionally encounter during the campaign. I experienced frequent fps drops even on the Pro, and a persistent bug that causes the game to lock up for a few seconds every now and then, which may cause you to get killed if it happens in the middle of a battle. Its clear that Odyssey is a very demanding game that pushes even the enhanced consoles to their absolute limit, so i would be cautious about attempting to play it on the base consoles if you are at all sensitive to fps dips.

On the issue of grind walls, be aware that you may find yourself required at times to either stop the main campaign for a time and go and do side quests to level up, or to purchase the XP boost microtransaction item if you just want to play the main story. This will not be an issue if you are a completionist, but it may well annoy some players who want to focus on the main plot.

Overall, AC Odyssey is an extremely enjoyable and ambitious game that brims with content and looks and sounds stunning. While it falters here and there in certain design decisions, it is well worth your time if you are a fan of AC games, action RPGs, and/or open worlds, and you have 50-100 hours to spare.

I don't know how this game has enjoyed so much praise. It feels nothing like Assassin's Creed, for one. More like The Witcher 3: Greek Edition, except it's made by Disney, and it sucks. I say Disney because they throw historical accuracy and logic out the window in their quest to be inclusive. Whereas previous Assassin's Creed games have been slightly historically accurate, this gameI don't know how this game has enjoyed so much praise. It feels nothing like Assassin's Creed, for one. More like The Witcher 3: Greek Edition, except it's made by Disney, and it sucks. I say Disney because they throw historical accuracy and logic out the window in their quest to be inclusive. Whereas previous Assassin's Creed games have been slightly historically accurate, this game does not give a crap about how things actually were back then, which is immediately apparent when at the start of the game you're given the choice of playing a female warrior. Yeah, right.

The unfortunate thing about this is Kassandra is voiced better than Alexios, whose acting is just terrible, so if you want the best experience you're going to have to choose the female. I wouldn't have as much of a problem with all the historical inaccuracies if the game were actually fun. It's not. It's an exhaustingly giant world full of boring things to do, dotted with quests that give you the illusion of choice, and bad level scaling that makes you feel like everything you're doing is pointless. Just hit level 16? Great! So did all your enemies. Don't you feel so accomplished?

And then there's the animations, which are horrendous. Your attacks don't feel like they really connect, for one, and the kill animations are the worst of the series. Can't tell you how many times I laughed at the awful physics as bodies bounced off the floor during an assassination, or my spear didn't actually connect with a body during an impalement. There is nothing satisfying about the combat, and you'll do a ton of it.

Also, there's no longer any thought to climbing, and you can climb any surface regardless of whether or not there's something to grab onto. Previous games would make buildings little mini challenges as you tried to figure out the best way to scale them. Now, you just point forward and shoot to the top like a god. There is no sense of believability at all. You are Spider-Man.

I could go on and on. It's funny how this game was created by the same team as Syndicate, because that was my least favorite in the series up until now. I guess people in search of burning 100 hours of their life in the most mundane way possible will enjoy this, but I'd rather play The Witcher 3 again and enjoy actual quality content where choices matter and my immersion isn't destroyed every 5 seconds.

I finished the main quest in 45 hours. I have to say, this game is great but it's so damn repetetive. Also, the fact that you must reach a certain level to proced in the main quest is very boring and the main plot could have been more short for sure. Anyway, interesting story and good gameplay, it really entertained me for a long time|

Of course, there is artistic liberty, like flaming swords, but there are a lot of details that are correct when it comes to the columns, the buildings, the weapons. Also the NPCs whose behaviour is in line with their actual behaviour (or attributed behaviour).

The game itself is a bit lengthy at times but I didn't have any issues in general with keeping up level by doing the entertaining side quests. Each location that I visited was full of new and nice surprises. Highlights were ancient Athens, the Minoan palaces, the rugged landscape around Sparta.

All in all scenery and setting and story are great in my opinion, some of the fights and quests are a bit lengthy and the controls could be improved somewhat.

I loved Black Flag. The Open World was quite large but not frustratingly so, the combat was simple and precise, the missions mostly interesting, the sea warfare a great innovation.
Unfortunately, Odyssey is way to big, fighting is more of a grind and chore than fun. There are no huge innovations either. To me, it's the same as origins: repetitive, huge and to some degree senseless since

Story is really bad, non-existent, uninteresting, badly scripted. The whole drive of AC franchise has disappeared, mostly because of lack of Assassins and Templars. This game is called Assassins Creed but You, as player, do not belong to any fraction. You are just mercenary who in his attempt for vengeance is fighting randomly for Athens or Sparta with no core drives. Main quests and also side quests are very repetitive, offering no challenge or innovative approach. All actions are mostly limited to “go there, kill somebody, come back, but it is not enough, you need to return back where you came from and bring something else”.

AC franchise was mostly interesting for its illuminati-like narrative, retelling history, legends and myths in its own and very original way through eyes of secret organizations operating behind main events in human history. But this aspect is hugely missing making entire story very boring and history turned upside down just to serve sick political and race correctness in slavery states in acient Greece.

Except the story, the gameplay is literally disaster. It never happened to me on any console that any game was freezing or lagging as AC:Oddysey does. Graphics and animation compared to Horizon Zero Dawn from 2017 or God of War from early 2018 is on lowest level.

Combat system based on levels is also very painful and poorly designed, making it nearly impossible to defeat character even 1 level above you (3 levels above are marked with red skull). This strips any challenge on any difficulty and chance to defeat your enemies just with your playing skills. You basically need to be correct level to proceed to locations or even main story, what brings me to next point.

Hated microtransaction, yes, they are plenty and players are rightfully angry about it. Oddysey is not cheap game, not even in most basic edition without all DLCs and bonus content, and still Ubisoft is forcing players to spend another 20 EUR for some “Time savers” to get right amount of experience and game currency so you can continue in main story without running around and completing repetitive side quests.

But worst of worst is loading time of game which is amazingly long. Especially in age of eliminating loading time to minimum, in this game you will get longest loading time between in-game cutscenes and gameplay I have ever seen. The worst it is when you wait several minutes to load cutscene which is couple seconds long and then you wait another minutes to get back to gameplay. Fast Travel option just lost all meaning when travelling by by foor is qicker than using fast travel option with insane loading time.

All in all, I need to acknowledge size of this world and plenty of side quests and characters. I would say that main reason behind all microtransactions is that 60 USD is not real price of this game, rather 100 USD in basic edition, thanks to its enormity. However, poor combat system and terrible gameplay experience make it one of the worst games I ever bought.

It is a sad sight to see a giant like Assassin's Creed lose its identity and sense of direction. Assassin's Creed thrived while in its action/adventure story style but, after years of milking the series for what it's worth year after year, the developers decided to make things fresh by almost completely stripping it of its identity. For critics, reviewers, and casual players, this is a welcomed change. But for the real fans, it is reasonable to see this as a tragedy. The linear, focused version of storytelling is replaced by your cooky cutter open dialog choice, gender selection, and multiple endings, which would be fine if that fit into Assassin's Creeds established lore and formula. The reason why the other installments didn't have these RPG elements are because of the Animus, a machine that lets people experience memories of ancestors through their DNA. Realistically, this would mean you sit through the memories like you would a linear story, not mend and change the memories to your liking like you would with a RPGs. The RPG formula just doesn't work with the storytelling of the game.

The present-day story has been weak for a long time now, ever since the end of Desomd Mile's story. Granted, the present day story from the first Assassin's Creed to Assassin's Creed 3 has had its fault. But, even with those faults, the story of Desmond Miles was interesting, had its high moments, and held a lot of insight into the world of Assassin's Creed. With better writing and care, the present day story could've been something truly great. But by comparison, Desmond Mile's story was far better than what's been spit out over the past few games and the implementation of Layla Hassan hasn't been a real improvement. People actually praise the fact that she and her present-day story is hardly in the game, which is disappointing because it shows that the writers can't seem to get the present-day aspect of their overall story right. In this installment, they also seem to forget the driving force and reason for these games; the Assassins and the Templars. These two major fighting forces are pretty much non-existent throughout the game, which is disappointing considering there are a lot of areas of both sides that still need to be fleshed out but are sadly ignored.

But to get off the subject of story, there are a few things to point out in terms of gameplay. The combat is a joke. Movement and animation are janky and cartoonish, stealth assassinations are a little outlandish for stealth assassinations, and with the implementation of RPG elements, there are these giants, goofy numbers that pop up with every attack. This a far cry from what the combat used to be. Sure, in terms of challenge and variety, it is better compared to the counter-spamming combat system of older installments. But, with what it gains, it loses the charm and interest that came with the smooth combat and cinematic movement and executions. It felt as though you were playing as an experienced fighter and assassin, not as a janky cartoon character on cocaine. There is just no charm to the combat as it sits now.

Also, what is the point of freerunning at this point? The most iconic part of the series where you could get from place to place in a fast and fashionable manner, jumping from rooftop to rooftop, wall to wall, has been belittled to jumping and climbing over rocks, trees, and a handful of buildings that are just close enough to jump between so you feel some sort of relevance out of it.

The Assassin's Creed formula along with the identity has changed so much to the point where it is no longer is an Assassin's Creed game. Rather than improving the series's gameplay and story shortcomings while still keeping it true to its roots, Ubisoft seems to think it's better to just throw out everything that made Assassin's Creed great and turn it into an unrecognizable game to follow the fad of everything being an RPG and to make a profit off the series name. As a totally separate game, Assassin's Creed Odyssey would be a great game and probably have a lot better scoring overall. But, being that it is an Assassin's Creed game, it should be judged as so. For hardcore and veteran players, it should be sad to see a game so loved lose so much of itself just so that companies can continue to milk it year after year. It has seriously lost the heart and soul that made it great.

And let me tell you, that is money WELL spend.

The game is absolutely massive and there is a lot of content here to keep you busy for HOURS> Yes, most of it is fighting and killing. But dude...which RPG is not ???
Speaking of which....I do not mind the depature from the classic Assassins creed formula. I find the RPG aspect to be very refreshing.

Although the new combat system "Works" I still kinda do really miss the old mechanic with the counter fighting as seen in AC3 and AC Syndicate/Blackflag (Which are my favorite in the series)
Those fights always look super flashy and movie like. The new fighting system is more traditional RPG and feels somewhat clunky and repetative at times.

I really went into this expecting it to be faaarrr worse than it actually is.
The gameplay is solid and entertaining. Exploring and following the locations in areas is very fun and satisfying.

Also, 1 aspect of this game I totally did not expect is that THIS game is 100% a looter game. You find new gear pieces everywhere, and chasing that legendary item to perfect your build is very sastisfying.

Some bad things too. Your gear is very reliable on your current level and upgrading that gear is just waayy to expensive. To give you and example. Most missions and objectives reward you with approximiatly 500-700 gold. To upgrade a legendary weapon to your current level can cost as much as 15.000 gold. (so yeah, thats insane)
Mind you that most missions dont really take a long time. But still, its a build in grind-mechanic that I just wish wasnt there.

    PROS:
    -Great evoirment
-Plenty of content here to keep you busy for HOURS
    -LOOT !!!
-Freedom to play as you want
-Story (Personally for me was entertaning)

    CONS:

    -Crafting
-Economy (most important things are just TOO expensive)

I enjoyed the Hades out of this game, illustrated by the fact that I finally finished the main story arc after playing it for 120 hours (almost 40 hours longer than it took me to complete Origins).

Odyssey is visually stunning and the transitions from city to sea to country to cave really helps immerse you in the world of Ancient Greece.

The mechanics are familiar from Origins; they didn't try to re-invent the wheel here. It is more combat intensive, making it less "assassin-y" than any of its predecessors, but when you open the game fighting the Battle of Thermopylae as Leonidas, you quickly learn to look past that.

The controls themselves can be a little muddy at times...and it seems especially in tight scrapes. You want to get some distance between yourself and, say, three bounty hunters, but instead of leaping over a fence, you just jump on top of it (yeah, that happened more than once).

The story itself is well-plotted, and in the AC tradition, it cleverly involves several well-known historical figures into the narrative (Sokrates, Hippokrates, Perikles, Leonidas, and others). Your adventures pit you against Greek mythology's greatest monsters AND against a creepy secret society, and it's done in a satisfying (though overly long) way.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of choosing Kassandra as your hero at the beginning. The game's cover, etc, seems to point to Alexios as the player you're supposed to be, but no. While it doesn't actually matter (more on that in a moment), Melissanthi Mahut's voice work for Kassandra is immeasurably better and nuanced than Michael Antonakos's WAAAAY over-acted Alexios. The modern-day story component is almost useless anymore, and I think Ubisoft realizes it made a huge mistake with how they handled the Desmond storyline at the end of "AC III." But, you have to have an animus, so Layla Hassan returns to climb a couple of walls and check a few e-mails.

It's very easy to stop playing the main narrative and get lost in side quests (I love side-questing). I had nearly reached level 45 when I realized that I had a ton more of the actual STORY to play. It was at that moment where I realized that you can side quest forever in this game. There is no "cleaning up." There will always be more.

That's where I'll gripe a bit about the game. It IS too long. It's certainly a full world, but between endless mercenaries with awful, computer-generated nicknames (who are the most difficult enemies in the game, BTW - I was killed by mercenaries far more than any other foe), 15-minute fights against "legendary beasts" (a trope they didn't have to carry over from Origins - it's just a copy of those ridiculous elephant fights), silly side quests that almost always involve killing bandits or animals (you are a mercenary - or misthios - after all), and sinking ships on the Aegean Sea, Odyssey can be a quite "grindy" at times.

Also, outside of Kassandra (Sokrates and Myrinne are particularly good, also) the voice work is sub-average to poor. Many of the Greek accents seemed forced ("Hyow kyan I hyelp you?") and characters frequently emphasize the wrong words. Was no one in studio coaching them? Gah!

The engraving system doesn't really add too much to the game. Sure, it's nice to acquire a perk that lets you use less adrenaline to perform a special move or to increase your damage against animals (refer to legendary animals above), but I feel like something better could have been done there...not sure what, though.

I did NOT like that when went to play the game again, this time as Alexios, that all that happened was the programmers just dropped Alexios' avatar in the exact place where Kassandra's had been on my previous play-through. I think this game could have been something truly special had they found a way for you to play the game from one character's point of view, siding primarily with Sparta, and then from the other's POV fighting primarily for Athens. Interchanging the avatars really cheapened the story.

    Finally, that malakas farting pig...

Anyway, this game is, overall, great escapism and I hope that whatever Ubi's doing next for the series ties what we've seen here into what becomes the Assassins and Templars. And also which Assassin mated with which eagle to create offspring that allow humans to have eagle vision... OK, maybe I don't want to see that...

I really wanted to enjoy playing this more than I ended up doing.... If ubisoft could have only trimmed off the unnecessary bloat, there would be a decent game to be found. Instead its all level gated away and spread oh-so-thinly over a vastly over-sized map filled with unnecessary fetch bloat.

If the idea of spending 60+ hours in a game is not for you I recommend you save your time by skipping this and buying something else. Also AC origins achieves much of what this title seeks to at a FAR better level of quality with more respect for the players time (also is cheaper!).

As a fan of Assassin's Creed, being someone who has played every AC game (but origins), and after spending 100+ hours on this game, I can totally say: DO NOT BUY IT. I'ts terrible, an absolute piece of sh*t. Don't waste your money on Ubisoft anymore because they are laughing at us.

I keep thinking why all Assassins Creed games dont have boats! I just got this game not because I did not want to play it mostly because I keep thinking that developers fix these types of games within the first 3 months. This game is HUUGGGGGGEEEEE and you dont have to do all of it.

I would definitely recommend this game.

I absolutely loathe this game, and this is coming from someone who adored the previous entry, Assassin's Creed Origin. Whereas certain improvements were made in this installment, ultimately Greece is a step down from Egypt.

Presentation: While the texture work is fine, the water effects are stunning, and the draw distance is a sight to behold, it's difficult to shake the feeling that the environments seem to be copy and pasted. From grasslands to indistinguishable cities, there is never a sense of the regional diversity which characterized Origins so well. It's always seemingly dense forests with the same classical Greek style marble buildings with mosaic flooring. These were far and away the least interesting section of Egypt in Origins. Memphis had narrow sandy pathways that interject with water canals and in the distance is the gorgeously rendered Temple of Isis. Nothing was notable about Greece's environments other than the Aegean Sea.

Gameplay: This is also a massive step down. In Origins, if enemy types difficulty level was parallel to your ranking, they can be taken out in three or four strikes. In Odyssey it can take upwards to ten strikes due to the expanded RPG mechanics. Furthermore animations and combat are unbearably stiff, more so than Origins. The new bounty system which procedurally generates new bounty hunters made the once exciting encounters with Phylakes into laborious chores where, if contending with an enemy camp and caught, five bounty hunters come out of thin air to make an already tedious combat system borderline unbearable. On the plus side the spartan kick is amusing and ship to ship combat is exciting.

Story: Conceptually the story is rather decent, especially when the central antagonist is unveiled. The central problem lies in presentation. The voice acting is abysmal, the animations are universally laughable. Compared to the Witcher 3 which balances algorithmic dialogue sequences with handcrafted motion captured sequences, mostly everything in Assassin's Creed Odyssey's presentation is unremarkable and dull.

Leveling: Far and away the worst issue plaguing Assassin's Creed Odyssey, leveling up in this game requires players to complete as many side quests as possible in order to push the central story forward. What's worse is that players can buy XP points with real money in order to allow players to "skip the grind". This design decision was intentional and it's there for the sole purpose of extorting as much money from it's player base as possible. It's an insidious practice that deserves culpability from the larger community.

Overall, this is a mediocre game in an otherwise excellent year for gaming.

Un juego que repite el mismo esquema de principio a fin, sin variación ni evolución alguna. todo el rato es lo mismo. Más del 50% del tiempo de juego es tener al jugador corriendo de un lado a otro para completar las distintas misiones.

When I heard about Odyssey, I was interested due to the setting, but was also unsure If I would enjoy the game due to the combat being similar to Origins. Personally I was always a fan of the old combat system in the previous games. Unfortunately I was right, and I didn't enjoy the combat through my 300+ hours. I did finish the game and get the platinum trophy but I think that was more the completionist in me than my enjoyment in the game. I'm still not a fan of the combat, it just doesn't feel right to me, the story is alright, nothing really got me on the edge of my seat and there aren't any memorable moments. The only reason I think I did enjoy some of the story is because I'm a big fan of the era, otherwise the story would probably just bore me. The rpg elements are cool and a good turning point for the series but since none of the choices you make have much impact it all feels pointless. The world is huge but never felt lived in or interesting and unfortunately your not an assassin so no hidden blade. I think the game is in that middle ground, it's not bad but it's not great. I've finished the main story and there's nothing I can really say apart from it was alright to my friends. Expand

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

If someone had told me couple of years ago that Assassin’s Creed would become a full-fledged action RPG that would not look out of place on a shelf next to The Witcher 3, I would have snickered. But here I am, over 80 hours into Odyssey and still unable to believe that really happened. [12/2018, p.44]

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
