Great combat, beautiful setting and engaging story. It makes for a longer and more interesting game than Origins but lacks the draw of Bayek of Siwa and nothing imo beats the egyptian setting so far. Still a fantastic game, but I feel Origins is a better AC game. This is coming from someone who didnt really like the series either..

I'm too early in the game to write a review, however, I just want to give everyone a heads up - in case you haven't heard - that Odyssey is pretty much a different genre of game compared to all previous games. And so if you're not a fan of RPG's or RPG-like games, I wouldn't recommend this to you.

I finished the main quest in 45 hours. I have to say, this game is great but it's so damn repetetive. Also, the fact that you must reach a certain level to proced in the main quest is very boring and the main plot could have been more short for sure. Anyway, interesting story and good gameplay, it really entertained me for a long time|

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is definitely a must play, even if the use of micro-transactions is a bit intrusive towards the later part of the game. The map is insanely huge and gorgeous. Yes naval battles are back and they are super similar to Black Flag's mechanics. Boarding works the same, shooting works the same, although its arrows instead of cannons, and upgrading your ship has a game play loop to it that is really satisfying. You can even customize the look. The biggest change to the Ship mechanic would be the Lieutenants. Lieutenants add perks to the ship like plus damage, or plus armor, etc. They also have uses when boarding a ship. They fight right alongside you. Like gear these Lieutenants range from common to legendary status. Speaking of gear. If you were like me and wished Origins had armor that wasn't just cosmetic, or wanted a change from the status quo upgrading the same armor you have the entire game then Odyssey is your jam. Now armor pieces consist of 5 types. Head, chest, legs, arms, and waist. Each piece has their perks and range from common, to legendary. Weapons are still the same from Origins. Sword, double swords, staffs, maces, axes, spears, etc. However bows have changed and work nothing like origins. Now you only carry one at all times and upgrade perks to make it do stuff like the predator bow did when you followed a shot to the target. Or shoot 4 arrows out of time with the Multiple shot perk. And you can FINALLY craft arrows. That was a much welcome change for me. Listen, Odyssey deserves a chance. If you are one of those people saying "this isn't an Assassin's Creed game!" Ok then it's not now play it it is still good enough to warrant your time and money. The value alone is exemplary. Giving you tons more hours of play than any previous AC games. All I am asking is that you keep an open mind, and before you completely write this game off just try it. You might be pleasantly surprised. My one and only gripe is the heavy push at micro-transactions. You will get to a point where you have to grind for hours to get to the level whatever the Next story mission is at, and it's quite clear what Ubisolft's intentions are. To get you to purchase Helix credits so that you can get XP boosters, better gear, etc. It isn't all bad though. This kinda forced me to explore the world looking for locations to complete, and I ended up getting WAY better gear for doing so. It just throws the pacing off quite heavily. Ok, ok I'm done now. Just try it before ya criticize it. Expand

The story was just interesting enough to keep me engaged. I really liked the RPG inspired weapons and armor choices and their complete set bonus perks. There was just enough of the Greek mythology sprinkled into the game while making sure to tie it all into the AC lore to make sense.

You can choose to ignore all the tedious side quests and power through the story, although a few of them are definitely worth pursuing. I recommend taking a quick look at a guide to see which ones, I don't want to spoil anything here. It was a lot of fun to play.

The worst about this game are the "Assassin Creed" parts (mostly present parts), without them the game would be much better. The game also does not have proper ending with ending credits. It was huge disappointment which left me like not finishing the game after 90 invested hours. After this enormous time I was looking forward to already finish the game and move to something else. I believe most mature players these days have enough money, but they do not have enough time (e.g. I will not be able to finish in my life all the games and books which I own). From the authors of the games I would expect to prepare the game as good as possible without any fillers and with proper ending respecting its players (and customers of the authors). Quality is more than quantity and Assassins Creed franchise is not the type of game like Monster Hunter. The proper length would be approx. 40-50 hours. Or at least the mains missions (like hunt for cultist) should not be hidden between hundreds of side quests.

Also the movement is little bit clunky and fighting is quite simple. I have played RDR2 right before it and then started Death Stranding. Both these games has much better feeling of moving in real environment.

Simply said without great characters and ancient Greek setting, I would enjoy the game much less.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As with Origins, this years creed installment is a welcome change. The RPG elements are what this game needed to feel fresh, the combat was much improved on the last game (still room for improvement). The narrative was solid, the high seas ship battles are welcomed in their return and the mini nemesis system for the mercenary’s was also pretty cool.

What isn’t great is the game world is big. The issue with this is sometimes the areas feel they are big just to be big, there is nothing to fill those areas with interesting things to find. A good chunk of side quests were very fetch like, this isn’t a problem if during that quest it guides you to a more substantial find (think Skyrim and the Witcher 3). Speaking of fetch quests I am starting to hate the old get something for me and bring it back, I am hoping in the near future these type of “filler” quests will be revolutionised somehow, most of the things you fetched in this game Ikaros could have flown it back for you, rather then sit through a load screen or ride all the way back just to give a guy a stone **** (yep it’s a thing).

Combat mechanics and the Mercenary system recalls Shadow of Mordor more than Assassin's Creed. Fans of "Origins" will certainly love this. But if you didn't like that Egypt-set adventure, then you'll probably skip this one. The franchise has become a "Witcher"-like action game for better or worse. I loved fighting Medusa and lions and bears. I loved that I could tame animals and have them fight by my side. I loved I could go underwater and fight sharks and swim next to a giant whale. This game has so many epic moments. But it is a grind and it can get repetitive. I haven't played any of the DLC but I beat the main game. I don't like how all these games are charging extra for DLC's these days.. And one last thing. The game did freeze three times in total on my PS4 Slim. I played the game over 100 hours so its not a big issue but it's something to mention. And all three times it started freezing when I was surrounded by a lot of enemies at a fort. I think the game was trying to keep track of too many enemies at once. Also the pointless micro transactions aren't needed at all in this game. You can earn all the best armor and weapons in game. That's a great thing actually. The bad thing is the XP Booster... If it wasn't for the freezing and XP Booster/pointless micro transactions I would give this game a 9.5/10 Also you can play on easy, medium and hard difficulty. I played on easy because the game is level gated. Playing on easy allows you to beat enemies a couple levels above you. On medium and hard you can't really. So in my opinion playing on easy can be easy but it can also be hard if you try to fight enemies a couple levels above you. I beat Medusa at level 46. It took me 45 minutes. So it just depends on how you want to play. I like that the game gives you this kind of flexibility. . 8/10 Expand

Odyssey latches on to the RPG elements Origins laid down, but takes it to greater heights. From the enriched Greek Isles, to the stories of mythical creatures and gods, Odyssey is much more immersed than its predecessor.

One of the biggest features was the gender of the Canon Protagonist (As the opposite could also be chosen). Being female makes a headline in an ever changing landscape in games, while this is nothing new for this franchise, it has certainly cemented the modern standards of the genre. Gender besides though Odyssey has lived up to my expectation is many other ways.

The vast open world and well detailed environments, have shone as its core features. Scaling the rock faces of forested cliff sides or that of the stone embodiment of Poseidon really stuck to the Assassin Creed roots. Though with the options of horseback and ship sailing, traversal felt better to combat yourself, rather than fast travel.

Odyssey is very much an improvement over Origins, executing more in depth RPG options both in dialogue and actions. Though this was much a positive, to me the RPG influences as of late are creating a different sort of game. I enjoy RPG’s and while this is not native to the genre in terms of a personal custom character, it really carries that pride. However, from the hoarding of gear and levelling mechanics, to RPG branching story arcs, the core of what Assassins Creed was, has worn away.

In conclusion then, Odyssey excels as a new addition to the franchise. It capitalises on all the things Origins had, and even pushes the boat out further. Though while it excels in what is has achieved, this new form of Assassins Creed will not carry the same effect as I think older instalments once did.

Assassin's Creed is back but this time in the period of heroes and legends. Ubisoft decided to go to Ancient Greece with this installment. I couldn't be happier. This is the only time period they've done that had me excited to roam around. This isn't a perfect game, but it is one of the better in the series.

The story is one of revenge or redemption. You play as either Alexios or Kassandra and you are a mercenary. This game takes place during the Peloponnesian War when Athens and Sparta are at each others throat. While that is the setting in the story you aren't an Assassin nor become one. The villains aren't the Templars they are the Cult of Kosmos which are basically the Templars. This game feels more like an Assassin's Creed knock off than a new entry. That all being said I felt like the characters where so much more engaging than in the previous few games. I liked the protagonist, and loved main antagonist. I won't say who they are, but the main antagonist hasn't really ever been this good. I liked the story a lot and the ending was satisfying while definitely leaving room for DLC.

The games world feels alive... most of the time. Battles happen, and animals will attack NPCs without you being there, but they lose me with character models. I saw the same NPCs all over it could have use a bit of variety.

The game does play a lot like last years Assassin's Creed Origins except more refined. All the pain in the ass things are gone like mandatory assassination kills or getting around is easier, and leveling up is more manageable. I enjoyed playing this game, but my one issue is that it is too long. Not everyone will see this others might want more. I just think putting 30+ hours into Assassin's Creed is a bit much. They force you to do side quest because it has the mission layout as Origins. That style of game is fine hell my favorite game The Witcher 3 has that. The difference is in the setting. I like ancient Greece, but it isn't a mystical land with monsters and creature littered throughout it. All you find is animals and people. ( You do fight mythical creatures late game and they are amazing fights, but that's at least 25 hours into it.) I just wish I could blow through the story without needing to screw around grinding because I did enjoy the hell out of the story. Regardless combat is fun and the abilities make you feel like the great Achilles. This game also doubles down on play how you want. I skip an entire rebellion quest because I went in and just killed the guy they were after.

Overall the game is a fun game and if you want to spend three months with a single game Assassin's Creed has you covered. It maybe too long for my taste but I still had a great time playing it. The ability to play how you want is more emphasized is this one you can take people out in anyway you chose. The choice in the story felt like my decisions had consequences, but I am not entirely sure if they did or not. If you like the series this is a must I give it a BUY.

I like Kassandra, if she were real I’d pee my pants but still be a bit in love, so good job. I like exploring too much so I’m not too far in the story but it’s okay so far.

Considering what other AC’s have been like (I haven’t played Origins yet, mind you) this is about as much fun for me as Black Flag although I miss hunting big fish, animal hunting is a bit meh (even Legendary beasts), ship wars are less fun although boarding is much better with the improved engine. Yeah I recommend it but I’ll admit it could be better. The map is huge btw, so no need to go bigger next time, it just leads to more unused space or space for mindless sidequests. Leveling should go much faster with the current cap and considering it’s a full price AAA game (got the gold edition...) I don’t like that buying an XP boost was a good idea if you catch my drift.

Edit: and the modern day story sucks and definitely doesn’t make the game more fun. Ubisoft should finally, finally get some balls and drop it. It’s just holding Assassin’s Creed games back since at least Black Flag, which is the first AC I played.

Every microtransaction is also avalaible for free through the ingame orichalum. Tho it is a lot of griending and luck needed to get the rare stuff from the shop. They upped the chance on getting the legendary items on the oikos store with one of their latest updates.
There is no need to buy them in the helix store.
Or check the Nexus mods page, just don't give Ubi your money for microtransactions.

I get the feeling that many negative reviews are from oldschool AC gamers that can't or wont adapt to the new gamestyle. I've played AC 1,2, Black Flag, Rogue and Origins so far.

The romance options are more of a fling rather than a serious approach like we are used from the Mass Effect series. But this is Ubi's first approach and with enough feedback they might be doing better in the next game.

Also the Dev's take in a lot of feedback from the gamer community and this is awesome.

So in conclusion this game is worth it's money and has imo a lot of replay value.

If you play your Kasslexios as gay or asexual you should keep your finger from the first DLC (legacy of the first blade) for several reasons.
If you wnat to know more about that you better go and spoil yourself before you decide to buy it or not.

The 2nd DLC (fate of atlantis) is okay.

I've played spider man, and shadow of tomb raider recently - those look poor in the comparison, especially content wise. I wouldn't believe any of those 0 o 1 scores as it's just trolls trying to push their own agenda - the fun the game gives is definitely worth the price. For me the only reason It's not 10 out of 10 is that it's not as immersive as The Witcher III, but I could easily put it next to God of War for example.

The micro transactions are a bit troubling yes, hence an 8/10, but they are not completely invasive. You can play this game without it and be perfectly fine. HAVING SAID THAT, the should have done it more tastefully, some of this rare ocassions seem really creepy.

Scenery is nice, yet TOO SAMEY. Gears are nice. The fighting system is really difficult to master for a casual gamer. The grinding here is INSANE to level up. It's an OPEN WORLD, yet not quite. Because you could be minding your own business out and about and plan to make your way to some fort just to arrive there and find that they're 20+ levels above you.

So far, it's a nice game. Unless it turns really bad towards the end. I haven't beaten it yet, it's really THAT big.

Assassins Creed: Odyssey is however the turning point for myself, i think this game has done for this generation of consoles for what Assassins Creed II (or the entire Ezio Trilogy) did for the last generation of consoles, i would rate this title higher, but i think the original story outside of the animus needs revision, i don't think the animus is the first thing on the list anymore, its more of an afterthought, i don't want it to be a chore, i want it to be interesting again, but the rest of the game is absolutely superb

If this is the foundations of the next line of Assassins Creed games going into the next generation of consoles, this is the best position to be in with the franchise, i am saying this for the first time in a while, i am definitely anticipating the next in the franchise

I understand what people say about it feeling less like an assassin game because particularly as you level up, you find you have to fight your way through places and it becomes less stealth and more a fighting game.

The weapons and armor are fun but i would have liked a bit more variety in gear.

Pegasus was a much needed add on to make travelling by horse much more accessible.

Before this entry in the franchise, I had only played Assassin's Creed II, and found myself sadly bored, wondering why I didn't click with a game that had received so much praise from others who had played the game. But Odyssey, with its massive open world, was what I personally wanted from an Assassin's Creed game.

Odyssey is not necessarily perfect, and to some extent, I tend to agree with much of the criticisms levelled at the game. Its open world feels a bit bloated at times, and its combat is good, though not necessarily excellent. However, I felt that while these things did drag down the overall experience significantly, the game still shone in many areas. It has a solid story, and the gear system is fairly good as well. What elevates all these average aspects is the sheer volume of content available to players. And while individual players' mileage may vary, I truly did enjoy my time with the game.

Odyssey might alienate former fans of the franchise, but I personally found myself greatly enjoying the formula that was first introduced in Origins and refined here. I would recommend the game to any fan of open-world action RPGs, with the caveat that it may not reach the highs of other games within the genre.

    JUGABILIDAD:

I did give Black Flag a chance on the PS3 but it didn’t stick with me for some reason, and since then I haven’t touched an Assassin’s Creed game until now, after hearing a lot of good stuff about Odyssey. People seem to recommend it based on its RPG elements, as well as its beautifully crafted world and countless hours of playtime.

I believe I’m somewhere midway through the story, I haven’t been prompted to visit all islands yet and I tend to let the story tell me where to go, and I’ve probably spent 80 hours or so playing. There is A LOT of content and optional side quests and I’ve only recently begun to focus mainly on the story because for a while I almost burnt myself out doing quests that (originally unbeknownst to me) get refreshed continually. My OCD prevents me from leaving ?-marks untouched on the map and I guess I’ll just have to live with the fact that there are markers for optional quests cluttering my map, and those markers will just never go away.

If you play this game, you will do yourself a big favor by ignoring the timeglass quests which don’t serve any purpose besides padding your XP. They don’t make any sense either and they’re all the same: ”Bandits come here and destroy our crops, please help, we only want peace” (spoken by a peaceful looking old woman), ”Oh, so you want me to gut all the bandits?” ”Yes,” the peaceful lady goes, ”all of them must DIE.” and you just sit there wondering what’s going on. Anyway.

I do have a problem with this sort of wide-open narrative because it feels disjointed and I sometimes wish I could just do the main story and be happy but at the same time I feel the urge to explore everything the world has to offer. The world is beautifully crafted but can feel quite hollow since a lot of the quests are the same and the world just feels like a static scenery that you run back and forth through.

I enjoy the RPG elements and the ability to upgrade weapons and change their appearance is great, because if you find a weapon that has good perks you can always upgrade its overall damage, making them accurate for your level. I hated finding weapons with great stats in The Witcher 3 only for them to be quite useless after I’d gained two levels or so. Also, you can change the appearance of your gear so you won’t have to deal with a dramatic climax being ruined because your character is dressed in a tuxedo with combat boots, a beenie and black/golden Elvis glasses (looking at you, CP2077 - it actually had me laughing through the climactic ending because, well, it’s just impossible to take someone serious when they look like they’ve literally fallen unconscious and gotten dressed up by 3-year olds at a flee market). Anyway.

I don’t really have anything bad to say about the graphics and animation - overall it looks great in my opinion, and it plays great and feels fluid like it should. It’s not GoW, but it’s what I’d expect from an Assassin’s Creed game. The combat does become a bit repetitive and after a while fights become too easy, but luckily there are mercenaries with certain abilities/perks who might still present a challenge.

Kassandra is a likeable character and I really like her voice-acting. The supporting cast is mostly just good but nothing stellar apart from a few exceptions. Being a history buff with an interest in ancient Greek philosophy helps to make the story interesting.

Like others have said, it feels more like a ”spartan warrior”-story than a ”templar vs assassin”-story, but the precursors of the templars and assassins are still there waiting to be uncovered. I would’ve liked a larger focus on modern day/animus and the whole conspiracy-aspect of AC though.

Microtransactions are there, yes, but they can easily be ignored.

Great music. Quite interesting character arc/development, Kassandra is likeable, the world is huge but ultimately feels quite hollow (though beautiful)…

At this point though I sort of just want to get on with the story. The game is like watching a 5-hour movie, you can’t help but feel like it would’ve been better if it was a bit more densely packed and effective in its execution. The grand scale instead, at least to me, lessens the impact that I believe the story could have had had it been shorter/denser.

There is plenty in the form of customizing and even creating different builds with armor attributes and skills you can choose to level up. A lot to pursue like killing cultists to uncover their leader, the main story quest, tons of great side quests with dialogue decisions that determine the outcome of the stories. Discovering ancient Greece is great, the environments are interesting and look great. I found myself really interested in the story and all the different characters. The things that brought this game down a bit for me is the loss of it feeling like an Assassin game, I just felt like a Greek soldier really, if I’m not running around on rooftops with my hood up and hidden blades it just doesn’t feel the same. There is also a lot of needless microtransactions and level gating that annoyed me more than anything else. There is no real reward or incentive for sneaking around while you can’t even assassinate people with one hit most of the time. Also, the sheer size of the game started feeling too much when I finished off the number 1 ranked bounty hunter (which took a while to do) a whole new list of higher ranking bounty hunters popped up, I finally succumbed and said yeah this game is a little too big. Overall, I’m not sure if this new AC formula is the way to go, it does have some good things going for it, just not sure if its better than the previous just yet. Expand

It has expanded upon the 'Ubi-formula' that they have been so heavily criticised for. Voice acting is superb, the world is immersive, and there is a ton of content. With each installation in the franchise, Ubisoft continue to revamp the combat system. Personally, it took me a while to get the hang of. It's not very fluent, in fact, it's very clunky at times. But it's not the worst I've ever played, so therefore, it can get a pass. This game really shines in its re-imagination of Ancient Greece. I'd argue this is Ubisoft's best game to date in that regard. The world is so incredibly beautiful and fluorescent.

The game suffered its 2 points from..
    1) Losing its identity as an Assassin's Creed game. The story does not further the war between the Assassin's and the Templars, in fact, you don't even play as an Assassin, instead, you're a Spartan. Why could we not have both? This is a missed opportunity to create a super interesting character that has to deal with the responsibilities of both a Spartan at war, and an Assassin plotting to destroy the Templar Order.
    2) Unnecessary need to grind. Any game that requires you to grind and grind to further the main story is greatly at fault.

All in all, a solid entry into the franchise. But could easily be argued as a Black Flag v2.0. I look forward to the next entry, hoping that Ubisoft improves on the game's shortcomings.

The first Assassin's Creed game I've played since Black Flag which I could never get into. Odyssey on the other hand was a great game to play. Having the choice between playing as Alexios or Kassandra was a great addition. I probably put 60-70 hours in to the game which was definitely a little more than I had bargained for when I picked the game up. My main complaints with the game were the late game dragging a little bit, and the ship battles. My main positives were the world and story, the customization options and some major side quests.

When you are gearing up to finish off the main baddies in this game towards the end, it can be a bit of a drag completing lesser side quests to get to the proper level to fight certain enemies. This is a minor gripe though as a lot of side quests are actually interesting, although pretty fetch questy at times. The combat does get pretty repetitive, but switching weapon types really helped. A much more major problem for me was the ship combat, it was why I couldn't get in to Black Flag, but it's a little more tolerable here. The Upgrade system seems a little steep starting out before you climb the mercenary ranks. However, ship battles never seemed to go well unless it was one on one and I found when I needed to kill specific enemies on ships, I much preferred pulling my ship within 200 meters, jumping off and swimming up to the enemy ships, which could take a lot of time if they kept sailing the opposite direction. The ships are also the only place I experienced noticeable glitches. Those came in the form of horrifically contorted enemies when fighting on ships. This was actually quite humorous and only happened twice very late in game. I did enjoy the ship customization and the sailing songs were quite enjoyable.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Features a Massive open world that's beautiful and full of Greek lore and ton's of character. The story was entertaining and I ended with the good ending so that probably helped. The little speech options here and there added a little bit of flare to some quests without going overboard and the fights against Mythological Creatures were very cool albeit a bit simplistic mechanically, as was most combat. But through that combat comes the loot that you equip and in my opinion is one of the best areas of the game. This game has almost every quality of life feature for the equipment that I wanted. Have a nice set of armor, but want to see your characters head? Toggle the helmet off and keep the armor bonus. Have a nice set of armor, but it's underleveled? You have two options here! You can change the armor to look like any style you've already looted and keep the armor bonuses of the higher set or you can upgrade them to be the same level as you, if your weapons or armor have engravings you want to keep. The side quests in this game did provide some good interest, hunting legendary animals and fighting mythological creatures being high points. And some very likable non main characters, my favorites being Diona, Daphnae, and Odessa.

The skill trees fall into a positive and negative. The skills were good but there weren't enough non ability skills for me to spend my skill points on. Late game it felt like I was wasting ability points. The abilities were fun to play around with and the overpowered attacks were cool. Late game the main draw, the spartan kick, becomes nearly useless as most enemies no longer fly off cliffs, understandably to just keep you from spartan kicking everyone but come on.

Overall the game is pretty cheap to pick up now, and definitely worth what you'd pay for it, about $15-20. This still feels like a $60 game so getting it now is definitely a good decision.

Now I have to admit that Odyssey is not the game for everyone, but it definitely was the game for me. Still I gave it a rating downgrade for the grindy nature.

Let's get to the parts I loved while playing this.

    1. Setting
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is set in ancient greece and executes this theme with mastery. The map consists of a continental part where the story takes place and a bunch of islands with side quests. The different areas are not hugely distinct from each other but there are differences and after all they are modeled after the real greece, so there was not that much freedom for the world building. One thing that stands out is the mythology. Ubisoft managed to weave it into the AC-Lore. I don't know about the AC part but it is a really exciting way to look at these ancient tales. This is especially true for the Atlantis DLC.

    2. Combat
In my opinion the combat in Odyssey was extremely fun, skill based and open to experiment with. There are plenty of fun and useful abilities. The variety of gear with stats that really matter makes it possible to create lots of different builds that all feel unique. With the right build it is possible to beat every enemy that is up to 10 levels above the level of you and your gear.
The stealth system worked a lot different from that in other parts of the series though. The main difference being that stealth is now a choice you have to actively make. I think this is a good design decision. I played huge parts of the game as an Assassin and had a stealth focused build up to the point where that got way to easy (killed every miniboss in one assassination + ability and did stealth area damage). I had to sacrifice some physical strength to achieve that though.
Ship battles were not that exciting but still ok and rather optional.

    3. Story/Immersion
Not only the world design but also the quest design is focused on letting you feel ancient greece. While the gameplay of the quests is ok and the storytelling has its highs and lows, with the best being the island side quests and the ending, what really stands out is the immersion. I was able to do everything I wanted to do in Greece and the story fully revolved around feeling like a greek hero. Slaying beasts, fighting epic battles, invading fortresses or forging mighty weapons which, together with your skills, let you feel like a god.

As stated above you might not like Odyssey. You might start the game, play 20 hours then get bored of the gameplay and move on. This game has flaws, for example the repetitiveness or the amount of time it takes to level yourself or your gear up. I was constantly at the need of upgrade material. However, if you love the theme of Greece and its politics or mythology, if you like a varied combat system and like hours of it, chances are you'll love this game.
I am such a person. I sunk 230 hours into this game and its two DLC's and I don't regret a single minute of it. And if there was more of it I sure as hell would play that as well. I did every cultist, every riddle, every quest or side quest, fought my way to the top of the mercenary ranking, collected every legendary gear piece that can be found on the map and even completed every single one of the roughly 750 locations on the map. So yes, I loved that game.

This game is pretty good but falls short of greatness. The storyline is mediocre and so are the characters. It's also quite different from traditional assassins creed games but I view that as a good thing as I found the old formula quite stale and AC Unity was the last AC game I played and I wasn't able to finish it.

    Pros:
    * This game is huge and looks very good for such a large open world game.
    * The gameplay is quite addictive. I loved how they changed the gameplay to become more of an RPG. You can optimise your playthrough to become either a Hunter (archer), Warrior, or Assassin. I've read that being a Hunter does the most DPS but I find being an archer boring so I went for a Warrior/Assassin hybrid. The warrior combat is the most fun.

Being an Assassin is also necessary as a lot of fortresses have way too many soldiers to kill in open combat so it's good to invest in this skill tree and find weapons/armour that increase your assassination damage. Unlike with older AC titles, many times you cannot assassinate someone with a one hit kill despite sneaking up on them. This being more of an RPG, you need to invest points into the Assassin tree and optimise your weapons/armour to deal the most damage whilst you're sneaking around. Usually polemarchs/warlords and captains cannot be killed in a one hit kill assassination but investing in the assassin tree still makes sense as your assassin damage is exponentially higher than your warrior damage so you can deal most of your damage upfront making open combat a little easier.
    * Gameplay is more varied than past AC games (except maybe origins but I haven't played that). You play as a mercenary so you can side with either Athens or Sparta. I chose to remain neutral as you get better loot that way.
** There are conquest battles which is like one big battle between Athens and Sparta and a few mercenaries. These are heaps of fun and one of my favourite aspects of this game. I always choose the side which has a difficulty rating of hard (the other being normal) as you get better loot that way.
** There are mercenaries who hunt you down when you get a "wanted" rating, for example when you commit crime out in the open such as stealing or murder. At first I thought these mercenaries were unique as they appear in the mercenaries menu however they get replaced by other mercenaries so this can get quite repetitive. For e.g. I killed over 250 mercenaries in my playthrough.
** Fortresses and/or bandit camps. You need to take out fortresses which involves killing polemarchs/captains, destroying supplies, and looting treasures to lower the nation rating to trigger conquest battles.

    Cons:
    * My biggest complaint with this game is that it's very repetitive. I personally found the gameplay addictive enough to get through this however I still felt that it was a slog a lot of the time. The world is huge but much of it is recycled. If you've done one fortress, you've done them all. I would've preferred for this game to be more varied in its quests at half the length. Mercenaries was a nice touch even though it blatantly ripped off the Shadow of Mordor/War series.
    * The storyline and characters were mediocre at best. As the protagonist, Kassandra has a much better voice actress than Alexios so if you're choosing to play this game as a female or male, pick female. Pretty much all of the character you meet are forgettable and it's hard to care what happens to them.
    * Horse riding speed is very slow inside or near cities. Basically when your horse trots around in a city, that's the same speed as running so you're better off not using your horse in cities as while running, you're better able to traverse through obstacles like climbing over walls, houses, etc.
    * Bugs and more bugs. Most of the bugs I encountered in my 70 hour playthrough weren't game breaking but more annoying. AC titles are buggier than a lot of AAA titles I've played. The main one is characters disappearing and reappearing elsewhere during combat or disappearing altogether. This one probably isn't a bug, but sometimes Kassandra can climb over a wall or column that is pretty much flat but other times she can't climb something which is obviously less smooth. Not a huge deal but breaks the immersion as it's inconsistent.
    * Choices and consequences. Most of your decisions don't really influence anything, at least not long term. There are a few decisions that do however but these are few and far in between. Romance is the most shallow as you can "romance" some people and they'd go off and do their thing offscreen but you'll never see them again unless it's storyline related and they'd act as if it never happened. The game also gives the impression that it was written for a male main character as most besides one or two or Kassandra's love interests are female. Whilst I don't mind my character being a lesbian, it would've been nice to have more options.
    * The game is lazy with its weapons and armour.

However, as an avid stealth adventure game fan, of course AC games will always piqued my interest, and since I started the new AC from Valhalla, I personally believed this game is A LOT better than the successor (I'm playing Origins as I started writing this review).

It has less repetitive rinse-repeat side quests (not counting the generic mercenary's board quest of course), it's more simple in terms of the combat (although the active skills is a bit bothersome to handle sometimes), better MC, and better story (main campaign).

Minor gripes probably the same with many other open games as usual, less convenient fast travel point to the quest, and the ride/horse is just not as reliable as it can't cross a river (this is more like a nitpicking), and the amount you have to spend on your ship for a certain trophy, even though the ship is less important to the main campaign (you don't need to invest heavily).

So for a neutral player point of view, I don't mind AC heading this direction, it's inevitable since they have to expand the universe, it's still a stealth and open game, with beautiful lore and historical place, try it, if you have the chance.

So this time we are in the Ancient Greece, in the time of the Minotaur, Cyclops, and many known characters like Sokrates, Hippokrates, Perikles,... The story of a Spartan family and the Greek world being destroyed or manipulated by the Cult is brilliant and well-made. In every part of Greece there are different quests and challenges, land to conquer or plunder, either being a Spartan or Athenian. After some time side-quests become too repetitive and you will propably try to skip them. Well, after at least half of the game, everything starts to feel repetitive, in every location, always same activities, but if you are a completionist like me, you will probably spend another few hours trying to finish every location activity. Aside the quest being repetitive, the world of Greece is amazing, so beautiful, many historical locations and different cities.
Talking about rpg elements, the skill tree is well detailed and gives you many options, stealth assassination not the best but acceptable. Main character movement not the realistic one, falling from a cliff and you don't die, weird running animation and not many parkour animations.

With AC: Odyssey, I have been hooked from the very beginning. Kassandra is a fantastic, strong, funny and engaging protagonist who is curious and questioning at just the right times (I'm sure Alexios is equally engaging, I just chose to play as Kassandra). The world itself is absolutely stunning and I found myself running around just exploring for the sake of exploring more often than not. The story itself, I found very interesting as Kassandra journeyed around ancient Greece, taking on cultists and trying to piece her family together.

While the gameplay occasionally felt quite repetitive, it was easy to grasp and understand. The world is open and you can go wherever you want, climb whatever you want and see whatever you want. It has an easy-access photomode for those that enjoy taking screenshots.

The Greek setting has no complaints from me. The Voice acting could’ve been better. The gameplay aspect is what makes up for the average story.

Playing this game you’ll feel like a badass, however if your a fan of the old ac then this game might not be for you. Overall the story is great however it can feel like its never going to come to an end as it’s a long one, too long actually.

Despite all this, I had a lot of fun exploring The Ancient Greece. And I don't regret having spent over 100 hours of my life on this game. Expand

Una grata sorpresa, un buen juego aunque, la saga ha retomado el camino y hay que aceptarlo, siempre añoraré a Ezio Auditore pero no se puede vivir siempre en el pasado.

Saying this game wasn't grindy is like saying the last season of game of thrones wasn't **** But this game really immersed me into the world of ancient Greece. Ubisoft needs to adjust some things in order to truly create an immersive open world rpg, but it's safe to say that they're on the right track. P.S i will never support the integration of micro transactions like time savers in video games.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is through and through a very solid game. It has a pretty good story, nothing genre defining, but again it's pretty solid. Its a solid open-world game, no major cons, no over-the-top pros: Just a solid game overall. It also feels really true to Greek Mythology, I felt pleased to find small little nods like when stumbled upon "The Helmet of Orpheus." Once again 8/10 would recommend. Expand

I originally came into the came with a negative mindset but playing through it, the game became one of the most fun games i’ve played this year. The combat is really fun and the story is decent. I say the story is decent because the ending didn’t feel fulfilling for me. I got the happy/best ending but it didn’t feel like it. I also wish the cult of kosmos members you hunt down played a bigger role and i wish the enemies weren’t so damage spongey. I also expected the main antagonist to play a larger role but they would only show up in cutscenes and we rarely get to see them outside of that. Expand

I cared more for these characters and the world than I ever did in previous Assassin’s Creed games, and I think that’s part of why this reboot is so successful. Playing Assassin’s Creed Odyssey left me feeling valiant and triumphant as I worked my way up the cultist food chain, and and I was always excited to see what Kassandra was off to discover next.

If someone had told me couple of years ago that Assassin’s Creed would become a full-fledged action RPG that would not look out of place on a shelf next to The Witcher 3, I would have snickered. But here I am, over 80 hours into Odyssey and still unable to believe that really happened. [12/2018, p.44]

It also commits a few of the same sins: in particular, the deluge of gar drops feels vaguely insulting, conditioning the player to lust after items exclusive to the in-game store. It's lifted, however, by the relative wit and intelligence of its quest design, and the delicate notes of uncertainty and curiosity introduced by Exploration mode. [Christmas 2018, p.108]
