I've always been a bit ambivalent about the Assassins Creed series, the PC ports have been pretty bad and I always thought it over ambitious on the PS3 (and I suck at climbing walls). This time the game is rendered as smooth as can be and running through Havana a joy (although I still suck at climbing).

I'm not a fan of the race to collect the shanties (see suckyness above) and those missions where you need to tail someone can get tedious but other than that I'm having a blast with the combat and exploration both on land and sea.

A finely, ahem, executed game on the PS 4

I liked the first one and hated 2, Brotherhood and 3. But wow Black Flag is an awesome adventure. For being a next gen launch title I am really impressed with the graphic. It is about medium high on a gaming pc. The story is fun and the ship battles are great. The overall sound and music is top notch. This is what AC should have always been.

I Really enjoyed AC4. Its not a perfect game but it grabs your attention and doesnt let go. For a next gen game it looks georgous. Draw distance and the level of detail on such a large map really shows the developers dedication. The contols are still an issue but its a fun ride so stop reading this review and go grab yourself a copy!

AC IV is definitely an improvement from ACIII. ACIII was terrible! I care about Edward and I love the fact that he's not dull. Guess what? There's actually STEALTH! There was no stealth whatsoever in ACIII and I'm glad that Ubisoft was smart enough to put it back in you'll really need it in this game. You're not a killing machine compared to Conner you're an actual ASSASSIN. Now the cons to the game are regenerating health and, again, only one button for free running. I hate regenerating health. I hate having to run away from battle just regain my health back, I prefer to have potions so I can heal right then and there. Free running.....I still don't like the one button, but since this game is nowhere near as buggy as ACIII I can tolerate it. Thank you Ubisoft for fixing most of the problems. Expand

I like how on islands, etc. you can make a mini game out of climbing tree branches to achieve your goals. It really taps into the power of the Playstation 4 and shows it well. The graphics are extremely impressive! Whether it be in a settlement or a deserted island, it appears to be very realistic in many different ways. The way the water moves, storms that you can get caught in, weather changes, it's all very surreal to watch. The combat system is basically the same as the previous version, it works very well. I highly recommend this to any Assassin's Creed fan or if you're looking to play an open world game that shows off the power of the PS4. Expand

The game is fantastic, enjoyable. Despite the new era and the new gameplay Assassin's Creed 4 could continue its ancestors' success. The story is great as always. No bugs and there are no problems with controls. The game worth every penny.

The new protagonist, Edward Kenway, lives some time before Connor. He's a pirate, rather than an assassin, and a slightly unsavory character. He's convinced he can make his fortune, chasing one far-fetching dream after another. He's more interesting than either protagonist from AC3, but more over, the game is just more fun. The scenes are broken down into a number of small locations, and when you get everything in one, it turns gold on your map. Which basically meant I ran around trying to turn as many locations gold as possible. For the first time in a long, long time, I found myself interested in accomplishing everything in game. In the end I didn't, not quite. The game was a bit larger than I would have liked for doing everything, and while I loved the exploration, by the end, I was ready for it to be over.

    Graphics:
The beautiful Caribbean setting pops, especially on PS4. This is by far the prettiest game in the franchise, making simply running around and climbing stuff fun in a way that hasn't been since about AC 2 (the first one).

    Story:
Edward Kenway is a protagonist out for himself--selfish and short-sighted. But despite seeing his self-destructive path, I still felt for him. And seeing him slowly grow as a character was a pleasure. The story is mostly fun and free-spirited, but tinged with a hint of regret, as the age of piracy is dying and Edward begins to realize that his style of living does have a cost.

In the present, a new, unnamed protagonist takes Desmond's place. The new guy or gal--you never know--is working for Abstergo Entertainment, who is making a virtual reality experience for retail from the memories of Desmond ancestors. Of course, that's a cover, but your hero isn't in on the real loop. It's all kind of tongue-in-cheek. Honestly, since the Desmond sections of AC3 were the best part, I found these sections here a bit of a let down. They mainly consist of hacking mini-games, most of which grew tedious long before I uncovered all the secrets.

    Gameplay:
The overall play experience is similar to AC 3, but refined in almost every way. Gone are annoying lock picking mini games, that made me actually walk past checks in that game. Now, I go out of my way to collect all the treasures--because, hey, pirate treasure! The game places a lot of emphasis on naval battles, but fortunately, the battles themselves, and upgrading your ship, are actually pretty fun.

In fact, the only tedium I really faced was the real-world hacking mini games, and feeling like a few too many eavesdropping missions cropped up. Don't get me wrong--the occasional eavesdropping or tail-the-guy mission breaks up the gameplay, but it becomes frustrating if you fail and are repeatedly forced to reload. I would have liked it better if, more like AC 1, there were alternatives and the game didn't just reload when things went awry.

The downside is clunky controls that will often cause screw-ups. Run and climb are tied to one button and the character will often get stuck breaking momentum and climbing during a chase if they get too near a wall. Combat is reduced to waiting for enemies attack to make a parry-riposte which other enemies will wait for you to finish.

Characters are likable even if the plot seems meandering. Overall a good game to play while you wait for more dedicated PS4 games.

There are some things that do get in the way from enjoying the game but those are features from the original game. Accidentally taking the rope up to the crows nest on my ship was too often of an occurrence to forgive it. Missions expectations being delayed until after I failed to complete them was also another hindrance to my enjoyment.

However those are minor enough still give it an 8/10. The sailing, ship to ship combat, and fighting a rogue wave were so enjoyable that I will play it again just experience the excitement again. Nothing is more satisfying in that game than the moment when you realize that when you set sail for the first time, you are in total control.

The story is almost an afterthought for me. Probably 9 of the first 10 hours that I spent playing this game were spent doing side missions; capturing ships, synchronizing viewpoints, taking down Naval Forts etc. with minimal time being put into progressing the story. The fact that the game is not linear is definitely a plus, here. You can literally spend hours enjoying quests on the side and not have to advance the storyline. This adds tremendous replay value without even factoring in the multiplayer element.

I usually play this game in 2 hour increments just to keep the gameplay elements fresh. If you're a marathon player that can sit in front of a TV for hours and hours on end then this game might bore you because it's a lot of the same things being done over and over again with slightly progressing difficulty. However it's one of those games where you will get out of it only as much effort as you put into it. If you spend time upgrading your ship and finding treasure chests for some extra gold, you'll find the boundaries of this game to be almost limitless. Overall Black Flag is a hit in my book, definitely better than last year's version.

The ability to aim a gun is an absolute revolution in this title and a great improvement. Fast-travelling does become somewhat of a nightmare when your trying to get all the assassin and naval contracts and the end of the game, as well as finding all fragments and chests that were loaded into a shotgun and fired at the map.
I DO NOT like the number of uncharted islands with chests and Animus fragments, they are NOT enjoyable and consume a lot of time. (OK everyone! Let's sail to the 200 small islands individually, jumping off and on your boat each time just to get 300 reales or a fragment! Sound fun?)
I would have liked a better sailing speed and turning system, something more in depth with actual sailing, but the aiming of cannons, ship weapon variety, and numerous upgrades keep it interesting.
The storyline is...well, long. I'll admit I love the First Civ references and sailing the Queen Anne and a Man o' War was AMAZING. Unfortunately, they reminded me that i would have preferred being able to choose any ship, not just one. Each could have had an upgrade set, abilities, advantages, disadvantages...oh well.
I recommend this game for someone who enjoys playing before they finish the story. DO NOT WAIT TO GET COLLECTIBLES AT THE END. It gets boring.

There are a couple things in this game that annoy me; the combat in this game was way too easy. You can easily beat this game using the default swords and pistols. The story in this game was nothing special. You play as Edward Kenway, a pirate trying to become rich. I thought Edward Kenway was an interesting character, but all the other characters in this game are forgettable. For example some of the characters you meet in this game will die and when it happens you really don’t care as much you should, which hurts the impact of the story overall. I always thought the Abstergo scenes hurt the AC story-line because they always take away from the main story you've been playing the whole game. If you’re an AC fan I would recommend it, just for the naval combat alone. Expand

Yes a few stuff get a bit repeatedly but if you look beyond those moments, this is a great game that will keep you entertain for many hours.

Again I urge people to try this game out for themselves. Also if we want metacritic to continue to be reliable we ALL need to start marking ratiings on game as unhelpful if their obviously troll reviews. Otherwise developers have no clue what to focus on and a crap game like Unity gets made. 0-2 rating implies the game crashes all the time and is barely functional.

Really fun. It takes what 3 did with it's shop battles and expands on it really well. There's a few little annoyances that never seem to get sorted in the sequels like climbing up weird angles on the ship mast, but it's not enough to put you off. Multiplayer is good fun too.

Arrrrr Matey! Get your pirate on in the latest version of Assassin's Creed. This being my first AC experience, I must say I was captured more by the side activities, as well as the naval combat, than I was the main quests. Beautiful done graphics with an amazingly accurate ocean simulator built in to make for a engaging sailing experience. Worth a buy.

Among the negative aspects I want to mention - absolutely stupid missions "nowadays abstergo", especially the fact that our protagonist is voiceless. Black Flag is the best entry in the series since AC II. Kenway makes for a much more fun protagonist and his story isn't bogged down in the usual political nonsense, instead we're given a fun swashbuckling pirate adventure which makes full use of it's gorgeously realised Carribean setting with the best mechanics of the series to date.

The assassins creed franchise has had its ups and downs. The previous, 3rd installment failed to keep me interested, as it was the first I did not play through. This one however, is well worth playing. The story is rather weak, but the universe is gripping and very well made. Next to The Shadow of Mordor, this is the best ps4 game in my little collection (so far).

I have been a fan since the beginning. Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag has many improvements over AC3 and is largely a great game with a few missteps like repetitive missions and uneven story issues. I think this is honestly the best pirate game ever made it hits the nail on the head for the pirate theme in fact it focuses more on pirates than assassins and gels them both together convincingly.

Side activities - The things to do outside the story missions are incredible, assassin contracts, sneaking into enemy islands or caves to loot treasure, freeing captured pirates, many things gives you money, loot, territory and crew members. With loot you can built your ship, your character and it allows you to tackle bigger challenges, there is always something that engages you and makes you feel like you’re doing something new. The Templar hunt quests are awesome and do an amazing job of expanding the world in which you live in. You can tackle all side missions in whatever way you want.
This game has hunting and it is quite fun you can shoot predators down from a distance hidden in bushes or in trees or you can confront them using quick time events to kill them. Using their pelts to upgrade your ship, weapons, tools and character. Another great side activity is the underwater sections where you swim in shipwrecks looking for loot, treasure and ship blueprints. The funnest thing about this is the way you can hide from sharks in reeds and always have to go back to air pockets for an extra breath; you feel very vulnerable which an exciting rush is.

Naval combat - Very fun and satisfying, you could bored other ships for literally hours without getting bored there is just SO MANY different ways to approach other ships. You can attack and conquer other forts which is addictive first using your naval combat from a distance to destroy their canons while attacking/dodging other ships near and far, then jumping straight into the chaos on the fort ground to cut through the enemies utilizing the ground combat then finally assassinating the captain.

Mission structure and gameplay - Okay for allot of the missions they are very open and let you tackle them in whatever way you wish with little handholding, which is very important, however this is one of the real lacking parts of the game the overall repetitiveness of the main missions. WAY too many missions you will find yourself doing the exact same thing over and over again whether it is eavesdropping, tailing someone or something in-between. The parkour and freedom of movement is great but can be tricky and pretty much is the same as in AC3 but tree running ans siling is smooth and works very well. The way you can go from running to sailing in seconds is really special.

Story - The story is very well thought out and lasts about 22 hours or so, as you follow Edward through his personal journey and experience the historic moments of the period is great and participating in them is amazing, something that makes all AC games truly special. All the main characters are convincingly accurate especially Black Beard he is SO WELL DONE. You start to feel attached to the main character especially in the later missions. However it is not without its downsides some missions are not very well explained and you will wonder how you got there and why you are really doing it.

Combat - The combat is fun at first and there are some really cool kill animations but largely it stays the same as AC3 just counter the incoming enemies attacks and they die or just keep tapping attack to kill the weaker guys. But it’s not horrible, a good side is there are different enemy types that require different means to kill them like you will have to counter with a different weapon such as a gun or requiring you to break their defense before striking, this keeps combat away from being too repetitive.

One thing I just have to say is that for us hardcore fans we have noticed that the AC games have gotten less about the assassin way of life and has focused more on the theme. Such as in AC3 where Connor was more of a warrior than an assassin and was not fully dedicated to the order. Similarities can be seen here. The stealth and eavesdropping has not really evolved much, there needs to be more assassinating and stealthy upgrades.

So to round Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag up most side activities are engaging and enjoyable, the naval combat is the best part of the game and is one all in its self, the theme of pirates is done exquisitely, the main missions can get old but they are not terrible, combat is over familiar, decent but nothing special, story is great but can seem random sometimes, music is amazing, parkour and gameplay is still upheld, and last but not least the landscapes are absolutely beautiful and stunning to observe.

This is, by far, the best Assassin's Creed in the series. Edward Kenway is a likable character, on par with Ezio, and the beautiful scenery tops it all off. The controls do have some quirks tho but that's something AC veterans are used to by now. The only downside, to me at least, is that this instalment doesn't progress the overall storyline that much.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality experience Black Flag offered after its slightly disappointing predecessor. The naval battles were better than ever before and the new protagonist Edward provides a new breath of fresh air into the series. Gone are the days of monotone ranting! The story and combat changes are thankfully only minor nitpicks for this otherwise great game.

Largest map I have played in an Assassin's Creed game by far, and that allowed for a lot of exploration in your shiny new boat!

On the negative side, you do have to remember this is yet another Assassin's Creed game. the gameplay is repeated as usual, but I like the smooth combat and movement a lot. This is the Assassin's Creed to bring back a story worth playing through.

Thias was the last ASSASSIN'S CREED I truly enjoyed. From here on, it only went worse. I even enjoyed the mulitplayer of this game, even though I only started playing it for the platin trophy.

By trying the game and playing it for the first few hours, it’s a fun game! The exploration is immersive you can really feel like you are a pirate captain. Just so happen I am not a fan of naval battle, maybe because i don’t want to get so side track from the story so much or I don’t want to get to the point where I forget the story already because of playing too much side quests. And to play it in 2020 although it’s a beautiful game, I don’t want to play a 6 years old game for 40-60 hours or more. The narrative of previous title is still better in my opinion maybe because they focus to much in its open world. My other complain is the treasure map quests, on my first try I am really excited about it, it’s a new, fun and immersive experience but right after your first treasure hunt, the effort and difficulty vs the reward is just not worth it. I like the protagonist better than AC3. He is next to Ezio. Overall, it’s a well-made game and still very original to date, but just not a fan of it. Expand

Best Assassin's Creed game. Good open world pirate experience. Good graphics for 2013. Bad sides are boring quests and story.

As my first ASSASSIN'S CREED i can say that it made me interested in the series. I found it very joey-able with it's fluid game play. The story is good and the characters charming. Overall very fun game.

Black Flag revolutionised and completely changed assassins creed. Brought so much more to the game & clearly redeemed itself from its failures with AC3. Loved playing the game, spent hours alone on ship battles. The storyline alone was worth playing the game for & in my opinion, one of the top 3 AC games to date.

Assassin's creed IV takes a different approach than the previous games however AC IV still feels like an Assassin's creed game. Biggest difference from previous games is added Ship battles. Ship battles are enjoyable at times but get very repetitive and can be frustrating when you cant can't continue the story because you ship is too weak and you need to upgrade. Another Solid game from Ubisoft. I do feel that the series is starting to wear me down. As I was getting towards the end, I ended up rushing thru the rest game just so I can finish it and be done with it.

Really likeable characters and good plot but ships' fights were so fatiguing and wearisome. But piratical climate, locations and history were very enjoyable.

As my friends always told me, "It's an awesome pirate game, but it's not an assassin's Creed".

My first and favourtie Assassin's creed game. gameplay was fun. And i liked the protagonist and the quick action when a Animal attacks you. But i diddn't know who the antagonist was. Also the game has quite a couple bugs. Like one time i was sabotaging a ship and there was a pirate that had his pistol super to glued his hand. But i just laughed it off. And i wish this game had co-op.

Quick background on me the reviewer, I tend to like single player games that is heavy on narrative the most. Up to try any genre of games and sometimes I find something new that I didn't think I'd like. I own a PC (built by me), Xbox One X, Xbox Series X, PS3, PS4, PS5, and a Switch. I prefer Playstation due to their focus on narrative games. For scoring, I’ll be using the Gameinformer review scale and of coursed influenced by my personal opinions.

    (8) Very Good. Innovated, but perhaps not in the right choice for everyone. This score indicates that there are many good things to be had, but arguable so.

What stands out in this game is the naval combat and exploration component which took advantage of the large scale open world. The story, combat, and par core (movement) were the weakest parts of the game. Just like previous iterations of the series the par core is hard control. It’s way too often your character will go a different direction or jump down which you weren’t trying to do or trying to do the exact opposite. Story missions were full of tail missions, eavesdropping missions, and are repetitive.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag doesn't continue the story very much. However, the focus on sea battles is a fine addition.

This game is trying to be uncharted and sea dog but it makes it even better. The plot in the Assassin's Creed series is finally more darker then it used to be. I liked it even more then the second part.

The PlayStation 4 version of the game is mechanically the same as the PlayStation 3 version, but the new engine is eye-poppingly awesome.
  2. Ubisoft significantly improved the multiplayer side of things. Also, story takes you places.
