Albeit the graphics could be crispier; the animation smoother and the music a bit better apart from the memorable few, you'll still have an enjoyable time.

Black Flag is Assassin's Creed at its finest and a must-play.

The sailing part of the game is perfect, entertaining, satisfying.
The part on foot is worse than in other older and newer ac games. Too simple "run from-bush-to-bush" sneaking, easy combat. Uninspiring assassinations. Most of the missions are "tail" and "eavesdrop." The story is being incessantly interrupted by some "I don't care about" present day chapters.

Pity, considering the on sea missions are awesome, the graphics are great (for 2013). Ubisoft should've made a new IP only about the sailing. But that wouldn't make that much profit as ac game would do.

While the story is amazing, ship combat gets boring after a few hours. Ship exploration has very little to actually find. On foot, the lack of challenge or varied gamelay hurts.

It starts out feeling like the ultimate pirate game with a great cast of characters, but falls to overly un-fun dark writing and frustrating missions. If Pirates of the Caribbean is %100 fun and adventure, Black Flag comes only to %25, after feeling like %90 early on.

A good game that should have never bared the AC logo imo. Not an Assassin's Creed game in any way, shape or form. That aside, it can be quite fun at times, the story and characters are interesting enough and the setting is pretty cool. Major con - ship stealth, the whole ship aspect is annoying enough as it is for me, but ship stealth? Are you f***ing serious?

    - Game packed with side activities related to Caribean Pirate theme.
    - Water battles looks very impressive.
And now come sad things (( :
    - Name of the game is wrong : there is 5% about assassins and 95% about pirates. Ubisoft should do these games (Black flag and Rogue) as separate IP.
    - Main story is poorly written and flat . It stimulates to skip boring cutscenes pretty soon.
    - Main protagonist constantly wines about money : mone , money that , lifetime money , blah blah money. Actually the whole story is about drunkard who always wants to get more money. Other side characters are even more mediocre and you barely can recall their names when you see them.
    - Around 75% of the gameplay you will spend on getting on the ship , getting off the ship , and boringly sailing . In couple of hours you will be tired of songs that you crew sing and you will question yourself , why developers did not add the button DISABLE SONGS PERMANENTLY into the option menu, instead of forcing you to press down button regularly.
    - Because of the setting of the whole game (pirates , ships , masts , ropes) there are a lot of small objects around the player all the time, which makes AC3 style "stick to closest object" traversal mechanic to go crazy and most of the time you are trying to fight controls , instead of enjoy smooth parkour run.
    - All side activities are insanely repetative and do not contain any entertainment information around them : open X chests , gather X prisms , open X bottles ... etc

Overall it is very nieche game , for the people who are obsessed with Pirates and sailing thema. It should be called Pirate Simulator instead of AC.

Nice game. The combat is nice but could be better, the ship combat is very nice, makes you feel like a true pirate. The story is kinda weak, the time passes too fast, and Edward never actually becomes an assassin. The graphics are kinda bad for a 2014 game. Still, nice game overhall.

You will easily loose hours when you realize you've just enjoyed sailing around with no particular goal other than to be Edward Kenway. The story is gripping enough for any AC title, you're not getting an Altair or Ezio level of story but an interesting one with a like able crew alongside the protagonist nonetheless. With an interesting twist to the modern day playable character, it's a great entry into the series and by far the best pirate game around! The islands are intersting, the sea and weather has to be some of the most beautiful to grace this generation of gaming and the historical characters play their roles perfectly, couldn't ask for more really.

The strong point of this game is being a pirate: naval battles, basically. This part was limited by the fact they tried to make this game look like an AC by putting a "deep plot" other than just... pirate things? The results: a very, very ok game.

So, after roughly 4 years of abstinence, I've decided to go back to the AC franchise where I left off. And, unsurprisingly, Black Flag turns out to be a mere reskin of AC3 that had come out just a year before it.

The core gameplay is exactly the same as before - parkour, dull combat and expanded ship fights. The ships were already there in AC3, here they just replace horses as a means of traveling between cities. As a result, we get a pretty cool sailor atmosphere, although it's all ruined by the game's repetitiveness. It's pretty great to board an enemy ship and bring its crew to their knees, but on the 30-50th time? Not so much. Same goes for underwater swimming, whale hunting and the rest of the mini-games AC IV offers. The 3 main cities themselves are largely unremarkable, and, what I found very disappointing, are not connected to the main open world - whenever you approach a city, there's a loading screen.

The story and characters are among the worst of the franchise - Kenway is a dull stereotypical scoundrel type with a heart of gold, who predictably and implausibly changes his ways closer to endgame. All of the side cast are boring pirates who do pirate stuff - drink rum, argue and kill people. It's cool that they're based off real historical figures, but with such poor writing I couldn't care less about the forced drama associated with some of them. And the main plot is also unbearably boring - you start looking for yet another "precursor" artifact, then spend half the missions doing filler sh*t like searching for supplies for your bland pirate friends, then you get back to looking for the artifact. Amazing.

So, to sum up, this game is a mediocre oversized DLC for Assassin's Creed 3 with a ridiculously poor story, same gameplay and a cool atmosphere than runs out due to repetitiveness. It doesn't deserve a "IV" in its title and I can't believe why some people on the Web would count this as one of the franchise's best. Had I played this right after AC3, my score would've been even lower.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me, I was extremely stoked for the game when it was announced. They advertised so many things that I should love the game when I play it. But, nope, this game is nothing more than foolish game design and blatant FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. They claimed you could FULLY customize your ship, go into taverns and recruit your own crew, sails the seas, all the while playing as an Assassin that is a double-agent of both the Assassins and the Templars. And also boasted that you can now dual-wield weapons. All of that was a lie. The dual wield isn't even dual wielding. Every weapon is just two of that weapon treated as one weapon slot. You can't freely choose what weapon to put in each hand. Let's also add that you CANNOT USE SINGLE WEAPONS ANYMORE. No heavy weapons, no one-hand swords, nothing. Just the genreic paired cutlasses, paired backswords, paired rapiers, etc. The recruitment thing was a lie. All you do in walk in front of the entrance of a tavern (can't even **** go inside) and beat up a few people and they magically join you (historically that's completely inaccurate,, there would be more you have to do other than beating the snot out of them to get them to join you, if anything they'll ttry to kill you from now on). The ship customization was the WORST offense. The double agent was a lie. The man you get your assassin's outfit from was a double agent, betraying the assassins for the templars. All you do is play a privateer who happens to kill him and disguise himself as him. He doesn't work for either side and doesn't care about either side. He just wants 'teh manies'. The worst one they lied about was the ship customization. The entire game you're stuck with using a dainty little, wimpy Brig. Yes, you can upgrade its defense and the like and put plates or parts on the body of the ship or change the figurehead...but that's it. Me, I love ships and this is a huge letdown. My preference is a vessel that isn't small (ie: a ship that doesn't have the deck close to the water). People told me that the Jackdaw is fine once you upgrade it. But that makes it EVEN WORSE. Yeah, it's historically accurate to have a teeny brig take out a bunch of Manowars. TOTALLY ACCURATE. That's like saying a Yacht can sink RMS Olympic..yeah, no. They could have at least give you an option at some point in the game to create a new ship or use one of the ones you captured and able to switch between it and the Jackdaw whenever but restrict the Story to being Jackdaw only. You had a brig in III and again in IV is another stupid Brig. I get it, historically they were the fastest ships during the time, but it's historically unrealistic for Edward to have that dainty thing and go through all these massive powerful ships and having other people use it. Wouldn't it be more sensible to having a more durable and stronger vessel, carry more crewmembers and hell, have a more THREATENING looking ship? Even during that time period Brigs weren't taken very seriously during warfare because of how unresilient they are. More to that, why would a pirate religiously keep to a Brig, why? To be a good pirate your vessel should be, you know, INTIMIDATING. They really dropped the ball with that. The one game they make that focuses on ships, sailing, and naval combat, it's completely RUINED by not being able to customize the ship. I get it, Edward likes the ship, but I don't. The worst part is, early on in the game you have to commandeer a Galleon. After that they say they're going to use it while you are doing your thing. Guess what? Some time later, I found it while sailing...marooned on an island. And I can't use it. So, another lie. And a kick to my face with that. The very fact the stupid Brig can be so durable because of pieces you put on its body and it can take down the most formidable ships of that period by just upgrading her is a complete insult and hilariously historically inaccurate. Might as well call it Assassin's Creed IV: The Little Brig That Could
The only good points is, the naval combat and sailing is fun. But when I'm restricted to the smallest ship during that time period, it's completely ruined. They really could have added a creatable ship for the PS4 version, the PS4 could handle it, but they dropped the ball on that. I wouldn't mind if I have to beat the game to be able to create a new ship! There's a reason why I think Unity was a vastly superior game to this.

The setting was refreshing and really made the game enjoyable. The Caribbean was nicely done and exploring remote islands was very enjoyable. The naval combat was my highlight of the gameplay. When traversing through the different cities in the game I regularly got frustrated with the controls as Edward climbed up walls I didn't intend for him to and took leaps at bad times. The combat is largely unchanged from prior AC games - so this feels very much the same. I love AC for the historical elements and different settings - but I need to take long breaks between playing because they all feel the same to me. I look forward to continuing the story - but I'll be taking a break once again. Expand

The jumping and climbing mechanics are executed perfectly, i've never had any problems while climbing buildings. The wii u version has a map on the gamepad, which allows you to see where you are going without having to pause the game, a really useful touch. The star of this game is Edward Kenway, a privateer-turned-pirate who is obsessed with making it big, getting lots of money, and then going back home to his wife in Britain. Unlike most such games, while the game centers on the Assassin vs Templar conflict, the protagonist is not a member of either organization for most of the length of the game, and has little devotion to either of their causes.

Meanwhile, the present-day plot is that of a programmer working at Abstergo Industries, the modern-day face of the Templar. But rather than doing something nefarious, their job is to go into the genetic memories of “Subject 17” (the modern-day protagonist of the last several games) and extract useful footage so that Abstergo can make a game out of it (with some help from Ubisoft, because Ubisoft loves to include themselves in their games).

All of this sounds good on the surface. Unfortunately, much like a red delicious apple, while it might look good, when you bite into it, you find that the flesh of the fruit is quite bland.

Assassin’s Creed 4 is a game which suffers from all of the problems of open-world games. There is a big game world with lots of stuff to do, but instead of being a lot of interesting things, it is the same thing over and over again. The naval combat is theoretically interesting, and is a huge feature of the game – you sail around on your pirate ship, attacking other ships to steal their stuff, and going from location to location to complete various tasks.

Unfortunately, while the ship stuff sounds interesting, it actually wears thin rather fast. There’s not that much variety in terms of enemy ships, and what variety there is is actually quite minimal – the smaller ships and the bigger ships are very similar, with the only differences being how much firepower they have. The largest ships have mortars, which can attack you from a distance – but these are just added onto the base. There isn’t much of a difference otherwise, and your ship can make very short work of most of the lighter ships anyway. And while your ship in principle has a few different kinds of shot – a shot from the bow that slows down enemy ships, a cannon broadside, a mortar of its own, the ability to drop fire barrels that serve as mines from the back, a ram for crashing into other ships and damaging them, and a swivel gun for shooting specific targeted locations – in the end, it is more or less “throw whatever you can at them” rather than trying some sort of clever tactics, and once you understand the general strategy behind attacking ships without yourself being attacked too much, you can just do the same thing over and over again and quickly win virtually every fight in the game.

On top of that, it has other issues. Once you damage the enemy ship enough, you pull up alongside them and board them – which would ordinarily be suicidal in the middle of combat, but in Asssassin’s Creed 4, makes your ship invincible while you’re doing it, and it even heals your ship. The actual boarding is done on foot, and is a clever idea in principle, but in practice, you will board dozens of ships over the course of the game, and it quickly wears thin, as the enemies on the ships are all the same and there’s only really three “other tasks” you might end up doing (killing 1-2 targets, blowing up the powder kegs, and climbing up to the top of the ship to kill a couple people or to take down the flag). This was neat the first few times, but after doing it so many times, I got quite bored with it. But, alas, if you want to gather the materials to upgrade your ship or to do the Kenway’s Fleet optional objective, you must capture a *lot* of ships.

The actual on-foot stuff is amongst the worst in the series. While the mechanics are the same as in previous games, the world is not. The world is full of samey areas. There’s only one town with buildings of any decent size (Havana), and even there, they’re mostly quite short and not very interesting to climb around on. This is a big problem, because one of the enjoyable things about Assassin’s Creed is climbing around cool big environments to complete tasks; there are only really two sections of the game where this happens, both being fortresses that you go into during a mission, and the two forts feel pretty similar to each other.

Otherwise, you spend most of your time running around pretty flat environments, with low, boring buildings being the norm, along with trees reminiscent of the Frontier parts of Assassin’s Creed 3. And while you use the ship to get from place to place, most of the “core” of the game – be it exploring areas or completing missions – happens on foot.

All in all, I’d recommend against playing this game, even if you got it for free; it just isn't worth the time.

But in the next couple dozen hours of my experience, I actually came out not only surprised, but deeply impressed by the well crafted story-line, main and supporting characters, and even villains. And while the ship mechanic had been used on the third game, Ubisoft definitely improved and worked hard to make it the best part of the game; Edward's Ship (The Jackdaw) feels like another character, and with the amount of time you spend on it, it doesn't end up boring or repetitive. Also the number of activities you can do in the game is very impressive and varied, and it allows you to not get too tired of them in the time playing the game. Also on the good side, the excellent score by Brian Tyler, that really makes you get into the pirate theme, and I have played it outside the game the second most of a pirate music outside the First Pirates of the Caribbean Movie. On the bad side, the main combat mechanics of the game, while fun and good in whole, are not very improved from previous games and the new gadgets, while cool, do not change to much in the aspect of how you played from previous games. Also other stuff carried from previous games not improved like some glitches while climbing and the like, and the sometimes hilariously dumb AI, especially in covert missions. But all in all, a great experience that lefts me wanting to see more of the pirates Assassin's and really gets me in the mood and the characters, and probably the best Assassin's game outside the Assassin's Creed II. So great job Ubisoft, although from what I hear from Unity, it seems you couldn't continue the streak, but we'll have to see. Definitely recommended even if you haven't played previous games, especially if you like pirates. Final Verdict: 8.9 Expand

The open world aspect is were the game shines - I just wish it was a bit more expansive (i.e. possibilty of changing ships, more extensive upgrades, etc) - the main game is the boring part (collecting tons of pointless things, doing boring stealthy missions). I also found the controls to be far from perfect, lots of incorrect inputs or unwanted actions. The parkour aspect also malfuncions and glitches from time to time, not game breaking by any means, but frequent enough to grate.

It is a decent game overall - the sad thing is the potenial it has - if this was realised we could be talking about an absolute classic. Instead it is a decent game but a near-miss - I picked my copy up during the black friday deals so paid less than US$10 - at that price it is worth a look - at full retail price I think probably not.

“Assassin's creed 4” is one of the best assassins creed game so far. The gameplay is amazing, the graphics are great, and the storyline is one you want to play over and over. Starting of as a pirate named Edward Kenway you come to see what you truly want in life and to wake up and find out you were in the animus, a machine that shows you what you ancestors did and saw in there life time.

The setting is early 1800s in the bahamas. The weird thing about the game is it talks more about being a pirate than an assassin, which the name of the game is called assassins creed. There is a lot of sneaking around in the game as well as taking down enemy ships. You go on a path of finding the observatory in the simulation to find it in the real world.

The story line makes more sense when you play from the first game, but it is still fun to play without all that. So overall I give it a 5/5 star rating, The age group i recommend it to would be 12 years and up. It can be scary to younger gamers.

So over all it is a great game, but it might not suit some people. And I’m not saying if you have a child this is the greatest game ever for them. But if you are older and like action adventure, and love a good story you should try “assassins creed 4 black flag”. This is my favorite game out of the series to play and i feel like anyone can like it to.

It finally brings justice to pirate history and does not stereotype pirates as angry bearded men with peg legs and eye patches (well not all of them anyway) but as poor and daring men looking for a better life and adventure! And there is ton to be had as you are allowed to fully explore the map once you progress through the story, use classical pirate-era equipment like flintlocks and scimitars, even deck out and customize your own ship and recruit a crew. You will be fighting many superpowers, secret organization and other pirates on your journey only group you are not allowed to kill are civilians and domestic animals which to me seems like a wasted opportunity; I get that AC doesn't want to be like GTA but what's the harm done if we could stab that annoying character that keeps getting in our way besides if civilians were allowed to be harmed it would have made the experience more rewarding. Classic Assasin's creed game, usually don't disappoint, and this one didn't do it either. The game has several fun and different modes you can do, and is a vast game there is potential to spend several hours just exploring and collecting things.

Likeable characters and good graphics ( I cant get over people giving this game a 0 because it doesn't have tomb raider graphics ??) gameplay is solid a few glitches but with a huge open world like this its forgivable. IMO one of the best all rounded games and immensely fun which is after all what you are playing it for ! Expand

This is a very good game overall, highly recommendable. However, if you go into it with the same story expectations as AC2, or sandbox open world expectations as GTA series, you will be disappointed. Do not let the negatives change your mind though. This is a very good game, and at the end of the day, it's fun exploring the large historical open worlds, doing crazy stuff and blowing things up. Assasin's Creed: Black Flag is an ambitious and well constructed game, that offers decent combat and an immersive landscape, but ultimately devolves into a nearly impossible grind.
If you like pirates, then this game is definitely worth checking out at least. A gripping seafaring soundtrack, excellent world design and perfect renditions of notorious historical figures brings the authenticity level insanely high. As Edward Kenway, you are able to do all of the things one would want in a pirate game, like sword fighting, gambling, finding treasure, and even boarding ships. Nothing is greater than wearing down an enemy ship's defenses, boarding it, and climbing the rigging to reach the enemy flag, and cutting it off of the mast.
With all that said, the rest of the game is unfortunately pretty mediocre. The story is so disconnected, because of so many objectives that are not narrative based that it can be hard to really care about the the characters, and what's happening to them. Also, rather than play as Edward Kenway, you actually playing as some random guy, living through the memories of Edward Kenway. For some reason, they thought it was a good Idea to give this Random Guy missions as well, which generally consist of walking around, and giving a file to someone, or downloading something from a certain computer, It's really quite boring, when all you really want to do is slice the crap out of some royal soldiers.
AC4 offers decent fighting, but nothing really interesting. The first couple battles are cool, but you eventually get used to it, and basically as long as you keep pressing circle and square, you are fine. The parkour mechanics are cool, but really, how many shanty towns usually have dudes running on rooftops? come on now.
While the melee controls are decent, the stealth mechanics are the worst in any game I've ever played. There is no way to crouch, or take cover, the only option is blending with people, bushes, and unusually common haywagons. This seems to be a game where the general idea is to rush in slicing and dicing, until nobody is left, which is all well and good, unless the game requires you stay hidden. Trying to sneak into an enemy fortress, is nearly impossible when the game desynchronizes as soon as anyone sees you. This was the most dissapointing part of the game, because I know Ubisoft is capable of some killer stealth gameplay. The most recent splinter cell installment was hands down the best stealth i've ever played. AC4 is awful in comparison.
Most of the side objectives, raiding ships, forts, and looking for treasure are fun the first time but past that very boring and formulaic. Naval contracts are mostly impossible, and leave the player feeling pretty bored.
I almost wish that AC4 was a rail based game, or perhaps made in the "wide-linear" style. There is quite simply too much going on to get into the game. Were it a more spontaneous story with the elements of this game incorporated into it, it would have been far more engaging.

The story was good until the last quarter of the game and then it was brilliant. I stuck it through to the end though with much toil. Play the game mindlessly and you’re in for half (or less) of a treat.

STRENUOUSLY dull. Repetitive map layouts. Repetitive missions. Rinse and repeat gameplay. An unfortunate feat for what is actually quite a beautiful game. Shoddy story-telling. Didn’t know what was happening most of the time. Didn’t care for half the characters.

    Virtually sail your life away.

ON the UP side, however, being a pirate is rewardingly cool. Voice accents are pulled off well. There are one liners here and there which will have you with a fist in the air, spouting, aye aye cap’n for sure, that was me.

Quite simply the best assassins creed to date. The game seems to have so much more character than the others and this seems to totally immerse into the game.
