I will never forget my first playthrough, words cannot convey why this game is a masterpiece. MGS 2 can be considered an improved version of MGS 1, this masterpiece made MGS 1 faster and more comfortable (let's be honest, in many PS1 games the control sucks).

Awesome game! There are simply no words to describe the admiration for this game. The game allows you to empathize with the heroes and hate some at the same time. The breaks of the fourth wall are generally a head dump. I wish every person to play and enjoy this masterpiece from Hideo Kojima!

Although the game is great in every way (graphics, plot, camera, controls, etc.) the problems lies on the fact that the cut scenes within the game are too long and the playing time is too short. nevertheless metal gear solid sons of liberty is a game that every playstation owners should have on their shelves.

The story line is easy to follow, but has controls that are not easy to get the hang of. Even though the game is split into two main places, the story is long and takes time. I liked the way the cutscenes were used to explain the storyline and I equally enjoyed how every character interacted with each other. The only feature of the incredible gameplay that I do not care for is how long the cut scenes were. Eventhough the scenes were beautifully detailed and well thought up, they are just too long. I cannot complain too much though because the cut scenes are the backbone of the storyline. With this in mind I give Metal Gear 2: Sons of Liberty a 9 out of 10. The story just went everywhere and kind of turned me off. Playing as Solid Snake, then as Raiden was like playing as Batman, then as Batgirl. Raiden was wimpy and whiny and asks way too many questions. His catchphrase can pretty much be "What?" or "..." Also, why does he need to call everyone over everything! Solid Snake could handle it without calling on the Codec too much, then again he had real training and not virtual reality training. It was well worth it to see Raiden get peed on by a guard or slip in bird poo to his watery grave or get dramatically electrocuted. The bosses were weird, but interesting. This game would be much better as an first-person shooter so you did not have to keep pressing the button. Now, for the positive aspects. I could not put down the game until it was over! The biggest complaint with this game is that you don't play as Solid Snake for the majority of it, but rather you play as Raiden. In truth, I really like Raiden as the protagonist. Raiden, who at first seems like an excuse to create a more anime-centric character, comes into his own rather quickly. He has a personality and style all his own, but still controls like Snake in the long run. It might as well be a skin swap.
Having played this directly after the first Metal Gear Solid, a few aspects of this game stood out as improvements, and others detracted. A great improvement was made to gunplay, which was clunky on the directional pad, but shines a little brighter on a stick. The character movement is better as well, allowing for various speeds of stealth. One thing that caught me a bit off guard was the enemy ai, that at times seems very sensitive, and at other times they are dull as rocks. It's a frustrating thing to often trudge through the trial and error, but I feel like this was done on purpose to create a greater sense of urgency. Like most of Kojima's games, it is pretty genuine in its design. It allows itself to be more than what you see, and this installment adds more depth and sophistication to an already established system. There is an "epic" atmosphere, even in confined halls or battling ridiculous bosses.
The conspiracies run deep in this one, and at first glance the plot is a bit of a cluster but a person willing to pay attention will find a detailed tale full of political intrigue and mystery. Even the inclusion of the oddly named "Solidus" wasn't so bad. The controls are a bit dated now and some practice is needed, but it shouldn't be a problem for someone committing to a good time. This is the real dividing point in the series, you can take it or leave it. It doesn't capture the same charm as the first, but its attention to detail is so strong it outplays many games even now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MGS 2 is an unconventional game, that is able to stand the test of time. The gameplay mechanics and controls feel a lot smoother than the first game, with bigger and more diverse stages to allow you to get a sense of the improved mechanics. The story is more ambitious, and many of the characters feel very fleshed out, from Snake to Emma, even if their presence is short, due to their characters staying intriguing through cut scenes and dialogue. The game concludes in a way that remains unique even for a MGS game, which is a major reason in why the game lingers in the players memory long after completion. MGS 2 is definitely a must have for the PS2. Expand

This game had many critics for a specific character that we all know, but at no time was the creator's bad idea, on the contrary, a success that was rewarded over the years. Very charismatic characters and a careful history from beginning to end, what we had to expect from a saga like metal gear.

Can get extremely **** when triggering alert which just spawns endless goons to wreck your ass until you die.
Minor antagonists are somewhat worse than in MGS1 but when it comes to the major antagonist, Solidus is a way better villain than Liquid, you can actually feel empathy towards him.
Boss fights are a letdown, too few and far between.

Sons of Liberty doesn't take itself too seriously while still keeping the player immersed in the plot and gameplay which is a line that very few games can walk. Kojima made some very risky decisions when it came to this game but when looking back at the series as a whole, its apparent that these decisions gave us some of his best work to date. The only issue I faced was the controls, the original MGS' controls worked perfectly (In my opinion) due to the fact that they fit with the gameplay, whereas MGS2s' controls and gameplay don't seem to fit as well as I would have hoped. This games controls are very similar to the original MGS' controls while adding a few new features such as the first person aiming system. This new aiming system combined with the original tank controls adds what I would call an awkward layer of difficulty that can turn away a few new players to this incredible game. Expand

The gameplay is more or less an updated version of MGS 1 with an even vaster attention to detail. I generally prefer the original from a gameplay standpoint (for whatever reason) but I can acknowledge that this is definitely an improvement from an objective standpoint. Story wise, this game constantly challenged my mind, asking questions from "Did I just slip in bird **** to "What the hell am I gonna do with my life?" Anyway, good game. Gameplay abounds in details, several are so bizarre i wonder how could anyone come up with them. Level design sets the quality bar for years to come — sandbox-type closed stealth arenas with vigilant guards and lots of kinds of interaction with environment. A huge step forward from more arcade MGS 1 . Graphics is top notch for those times, all the small visual details such as realtime melting ice cubes, steam from the mouth, flies revolving around light sources and etc., appear not so often in videogames even nowadays.

MGS2 provides the best stealth-action gameplay to date. Many creative tools littered throughout a dense sandbox of enemies. Some of the more challenging bosses in the series, each with a unique spin. Every little detail in this game brings the environment and characters to life, without compromising on the fun. Amazing acting and unapologetically 'gamey' writing. Being aware of playing this game heightens the immersion. This allows for interesting ideas and themes, including humanity's interaction with information, and the self-insertion of the audience into a piece of fiction.

A first playthrough may suffer a little from the dual-introduction and some wordy explanations. However, the gameplay and presentation is polished and shows no sign of wear 20 years later. This game reminds me that video games are fun.

Endless replay value, subversive and unpredictable narrative, top notch presentation.

What struck me was the variety of ways to approach an enemy, from stunning, to killing, to having them surrender. Snake is the coolest character in video games and I would have liked to use him more, but the game is developed fluidly enough to make you forget it. Expand

MGS1 is better. Doesn't live up to high reviews, in my opinion, but it's still quite good and worth playing.

A great game most definitely, but there is far too much cinematic and stuff. I think I spent more time watching video and listening to Kodek than I did playing the game.

I agree with ACONE, the new guy looks kinda gay but im not going to give it a freakin 5. The game doesnt deserve a 10 either. The guys you call on the codec dont help a bit so your kinda forced to go wandering around. Other than that the game is good. I give it an honest 8.

A truly amazing game graphics and gameplay is outstanding but the only thing that made me give it an 8 is the fact ur not snake for most of the game, and I don't feal the same about MGS2 than i do about MGS, and its very short but still a game worth getting.

I loved the first game: Metal Gear Solid! But Metal Gear Solid 2:Sons Of Liberty is better but a hell lot worse later on! The Tanker is great and real cool but the rest sucks! "Metal Gear Raiden 2" and the worst ending ever in a video game! I hope if they make a third game, that you won't play as any other characters than Solid Snake and that they create a better ending instead of I loved the first game: Metal Gear Solid! A must play game that unfortunately has too many flaws to call it a classic: -It in no way has the same impact the original had on gaming. The original was pretty much the first cinematic game ever, with a movie like presentation. The story and characters were more believable and more intricate/refined than the ott characters of mgs2. Moreover, the set pieces were more memorable and the bulk of the gameplay was more fun in the original mgs. -In terms of design the game is quite flawed; The game breaks down once you're spotted as aiming with a gun from cover is a mess (see towards the end of the tanker scene where you are forced to take on guards in a corridor). After an amazing first chapter, the second chapter is tedious at best - you spend the first hour watching codec conversations then the next 2 hours freezing c4 bombs in a very repetitive environment. MGS1 had its flaws such as the ridiculous staircase scene being chased by guards that are out of sight or the stupid 3 temperature card key mission but with 4 years and the new ps2 tech theres no excuse not to learn lessons and fix simple design issues like this. -As mentioned the characters don't compare to Sniper wolf, Revolver Ocelot (god damn that stupid arm and liquid ocelot...) or Psycho Mantis. Raiden is possibly the second most annoying character in a game behind the announcer in fuzion frenzy 2 - hes such a week pathetic pussy. Lets just hope konami and kojimas team have played some western games in the last few years and that mgs4 has corrected all the gameplay/design flaws of the previous games. Expand

  1. The environments are amazing, when on the deck of the tank the rain effects are extremely lifelike, along with rain drops hitting the ship and characters.
  2. As stunning and enjoyable as ever. You may feel foolish gripping the controller throughout a 40-minute cut scene, but MGS2 is something which must be experienced.

MGS2 suffers in its story. I can't spoil it for you, but I can at least warn you to be prepared for a plot that frequently reaches levels of sheer absurdity.
