An excellent sequel. It takes a while to get going after the amazing introduction, but it's overall a great game. Perhaps a little weak in the puzzle criteria to its predecessor and it also may lack replay value due to its linearity. These are its only downfalls however.

An original game but I prefer the 2005 one as it is much more violent it has more mutilation and blood but the 2 is still good.
I didn't like this one so much in relation to the first one because in this one the story didn't end completely, there was a question mark that would only be told In the third game that only came out for PS3

Really the only reasons I gave two points off is that the story is not as good or cohesive as the first. Instead of having motivation built through story line and character development, the levels this time around seem very contrived. You'll be going somewhere and get sidetracked by some artificial plot device way too often. Second, it is very unclear what you are supposed to do too often. For instance, you have to break this pillar to create a bridge, but how do you know you can do that when all the other pillars are indestructible? A good game, just not legendary like the first installment. Expand

Some of the artwork in God of War II is utterly breathtaking, showcasing the true limit of the PS2's graphical capabilities. Boss fights are reminiscent of old Nintendo games such as Jet Force Gemini and Zelda: OoT. A spectacular sequel in terms of storyline (a rarity of any medium) and gameplay.

The first game I thought was a fantastic story burdened by clunky mechanics that turned parts of gameplay into outright chores but this game was almost the opposite: a smooth game without as impressive a narrative. I never really felt to beat the game in order to see what became of my playing, but rather to beat the game in order to move onto the next one. Instead of this rags to riches plot that made the first so compelling, this is just a revenge tale that plays pretty much the same. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the game but before I go into my positives, i thought I’d get the negatives out of the way beforehand. So, damn this game was fun. The added scale and spectacle truly made this feel epic mostly in the sequences that allowed you to fly Pegasus, climb up Titans, and just prove that you are the God of War and not just a soldier of death. Being able to fight Zeus and truly feel like you’re able to kick his ass given the work you’ve done to upgrade your attacks and weapons was extremely fulfilling. The puzzles werent nearly as puzzling but being able to sprint through them just sort of added to the power I felt at the controls of our anti-hero. It’s a ton of fun, that much I can’t deny. Flying with the wings of Icarus was also an added bonus which brings me to my favorite and least favorite parts of the game: the lore it swims, and sometimes drowns, in. Look, it’s really great to interact with Greek gods, Titans, and other creatures of lore but sometimes I thought that the game would have benefitted from re-writing some of these elements. Mainly, 10-arm 10-boobed Great Uncle Ugly that you have to beat towards the end. That was more offputting and disgusting than threatening and I wanted to get it over with more than I did want to feel accomplished by beating him. but now I’m going to start Chains of Olympus and see where that story takes us. know what you’re thinking oh Brandon is a little girl who needs his hand held through all his games. That’s not it at all because it wasn’t the combat in the original that pissed me off; it was the unforgiving puzzles that drove me to the point of insanity. God of War 2 has puzzles that test your brain not how quickly you can jump from one box to another.

The story of God of War 2 starts with Kratos as the God of War and let’s just say the dude is still **** pissed about the whole family thing. I am still not going to spoil God of War because I believe there are still people out there who haven’t played it and would like to. So Kratos decides to have his armies ransack cities loyal to certain Gods. I forget why but he is pissed at every God for what has happened.
He ends up pissing off Zeus and Zeus tricks him into syphoning his powers into this sword to beat this well living statue. Which again bravo God of War it starts you out as a badass fighting a giant monster. Granted a giant statue isn’t half as cool as fighting the Hydra but it isn’t much of a step down. After his powers are drained into the sword that’s when Zeus strikes and kills Kratos. You heard me boys and girls he kills him. In doing so that sends him to
the underworld, where he meets the Titians. They tell him about how the Gods came to be and they also help him escape the underworld to extract his revenge. The rest of the game is Kratos finding a way to stop Zeus from killing him. The game has a weird twist at the end for those of you that have played this game what’d you think of the twist I thought that was weak and more of a “really?” moment.

The game sounds great the music hasn’t changed well at all and in all honesty in all the God of War games the music is about the same. Kratos talks a hell of a lot more he isn’t just going rawr for eight hours. What he says is still along the lines of I will destroy you and murder!! Even with that they also have other characters talk besides the Narrating Titan. They have small parts but it helps the story way more than the last game.

The game looks way better than the first, which is weird you think they would’ve spent more time making the first one look better and less time in this one. This came out towards the end of the PS2 so a little polish was needed not a bunch. They added so many new monsters in this game and the new boss fights were way better than the 4 you got in the first. What I really love about this series in general is seeing what Greek legend or creature will Kratos tear a new **** into.

The game plays the same as the first but the controls are way more polished and make more sense. The big one they changed was having R2 open
everything. I don’t know why but when I played the first that seemed so unnatural. Besides the game being way more brutal and having more of a thinking man’s kind of puzzles the game really does play like any other God of War which is a great thing. Think about it so many hack n’ slashes now copy the God of War format somehow and if you are playing those you stop that **** right now and see how this game started it all.

Overall if you like God of War 2 back on the PS2 go back and play this one. Especially if you have never played one start with two then go back to one it is such a better experience. I highly recommend this game to everyone who likes hack n’ slash games. Own this HD pack it’ll be worth every penny, I give this a 8. If you’d like me to review a game for whatever reason let me know in the comments section.

SCEA missed the boat on this one. First of all, a lot of Greek mythology is about seafaring. The GOW1 started off on creaky ships with hydras out at sea, which set the ambiance. GOW2, not so much except for one token sea creature (you fight on land)! Also, the music was too generically epic. I missed the simple lyre tunes from GOW1 that seem much more appropriate to 1000BC. Graphics, sound, cutscenes all push the PS2 to its limits so if I were a game critic, maybe I would have rated this higher.

Core game is still the same and I do not like it. I still hate button mashing; I still hate quick time events and God of War II has a lot of those. It is also as much a puzzle and platforming game as it is an action, so expect plenty of puzzle solving and precise platforming. The story of God of War 2 is much more complex in narrative aspects than the first, but I liked it a little more, Kratos' story captivated me. The 'prologue' is quite frantic and cool to play. But the beginning of the game is really strange, Kratos is very pissed. I did some research and saw that Ghost of Sparta was made between the first and the second game 'fixing' this hole. Zerei Ghost of Sparta and I recommend playing before that. Anyway, my main criticism of the story was the presentation, I found the rhythm of the story very bad, at first it was reasonable but here the distance of each cutscene worsened a lot. Only the beginning and end of the game are full of them. Apart from that the game ends in the 'climax' of Kratos' story, which at first is badass, but the truth is that it is kind of a joke.

The gameplay is better in general, but without major changes. The parry system is much more useful and is much more 'complex' than in the first game. The number of boss fights increased a lot compared to the first game, but that left most of them in that little striking. Some pretty bad sequences, like the one with the falling pillars and the one with the skeleton elevator. In the first game, this was practically non-existent. You can use 2 weapons 'at the same time' and the way of combining the two is reasonable, personally I didn't do much combining despite switching between 2 constantly. The puzzles remained good but I found them a little inferior in general.

Some checkpoints are 'bad', something I had no problem with at first. Many things were reused in the first game, with slight changes, from textures to enemies, combos, and a specific skill.

The graphics are very similar in general. The cinematics are fantastic, they were good in the first one, but here they are absurd.

The soundtrack remains very unique and characteristic of the saga. I found it decent but very little varied.

This is a good game. I dont think it is a "94!" style game even if its on a old playstation. Its fun and very good pacing, but only till you beat it, then you just want to see the next game and get some unlocklble content....which brings me to my most pi$$ed off complaint......To unlock the really good stuff you have to play through Titan mode and/or get Titan mode on all the callaenges. This is good to finally see a game with extra fun things in it, but the diffuctly in Titan mode is ridculas!!!! its not fun! its like hard, hard work. I beat it in Titan mode and only had i a couple of times not slamed down my controller and curse the develpors before shuting off my playstation in rage. A normal gamer would never go through that and even when you do, the unlockables are NOT that great. some arena style foolishness and costumes that should have been unlocked during the first run through......If it wasnt for having the normal mode i would give them game a flat 0 becasue NO game (No matter how great of story---which isnt all that great in this) should force you to go through outragous differcullies. I found myself dieing atleast 10 times by 3 bats at first! thats just stuipid. just casue you can make it that hard does not make a good fu$kin idea. The develpors really just prarade off the myths when ever they like. The story does suck. I'm sorry. It just places a bunch of myth creatures around and makes up whatever damn story they wish with just alittle sparkle of true folk lure...I'm not saying poeple wont love this game, but i think this is way too overated and i dont think i ever said that about any game other than that new Final Fantsay...............How about Krotos? yeah hes cool "I am the God of war" Over and over again. I do dig him on being a cool badass, but thats all....I dont care about him and its hard to..he's an a$$hole! A complete Di(k head. Not that he needs to be loving, but he waaaaaaaayyyyy over board. The actor just plays his same notes over and over again being 'mean' and 'tough' But at the end of the day you can only take so much of that foolishness. The female narrator was brillant. In both games she has kept the soul in the story. Without her it would turly fall into way too melodramaic nonsense. Like i said before, I dont know what poeple are thinking, maybe they just feel they need to becasue of the critics. Yet on the other hand, its the most brutal and insane killing game i ever seen...kudos for that becasue everything else is a mess (not technacally mind you, but story wise and the so called best combat.) P.S any one that thinks this is the best adventure game ever is a true jack-a$$ like ING. Zelda for the Wii is 20 times better and it isnt even the best adventure game.... (How can this game even compete with Oblivion? altought its on a very old console it doesnt mean it desreves to be a BEST adventrue ever ranking) I would have payed 20$ for this, but not $67! Expand

Let me start by saying that I LOVED the original. Every bit, and I didnt even have to check the internet once to get a clue. I found that God of War 2 had far too many obscure puzzles, and at some points even on normal difficulty was frustrating enough to throw your controller across the room. I got almost to the end, where you climb a rope across lava and the bad guys shoot it down. then Let me start by saying that I LOVED the original. All in all, the god of war series is awesome but I felt that the last half of this one was just too hard for people who arent necessarily video game freaks. Expand

I played it once and I played it again untill the end... But God of War 2 in my honest opinion, despite having a great art design and sound track, it's a game that cleary relies more in flashy moves, blood and gore resulting in a game full of show but lacking of substance.

Kratos is a lot angrier, and a lot less sympathetic (though I'm told the events of Ghost of Sparta explain this), and while it retains a little bit of the Harryhausen movie feel, especially with the inclusion of other characters from Greek myth and skeletons (spooky!), it just doesn't feel as charming. It's a little easy in places, and I can't remember any boss fights giving me that sense of awe that the first and third games did. It's a good game, certainly, and you can tell that the developers knew what they were doing, but I just didn't care for it that much. Expand

Every time the camera pans through a new puzzle room I cringed, each enemy encounter includes about 10-15 more enemies than you'll enjoy fighting, and the story seems more interested in how violent they can make Kratos without anyone realizing that he just smashed an old man's face in to a table.

The puzzles weren't difficult in design, but with no camera control and some puzzles requiring solving while you are getting hit by enemies-it becomes a real slog. There's also a really poorly implemented mechanic where you are turned to stone by Gorgon's. If, by chance, this happens in the air mid jump you shatter instantly. Really a frustrating way to have to repeat a section.

This game is a product of a time where games were meant to be frustrating with very little story. We'll see if I can still stick with the series!

While GamesTM have sold out to the mighty pound signs, Edge keep their reviews real and to be brutally honest this game is shite! Not Americas most wanted territory, but after the initial qualities the game throws at you its plain downhill after that. Seriously gameplay has moved on from this dog turd, pity Sony haven't realised it!

First off God of War 2 is way too short. the game takes about 8 hours to beat and is fun for the first 30 minutes. The game centers around Kratos the new god of war and his revenge plan to kill Zeus because he got tricked. Kratos is a moron because the gods are his family so he ends up killing his whole family again. Horrible Game. The first one was very good and i thought that the First God Of War was a blatant rip off or Legendary Games like Ninja Gaiden, Prince Of Persia(1989) and Devil May Cry. But GOW II goes a step ahead. Same moves. Graphics are better. More ripping off of poor games like Legacy Of Kain. The original God of War is still to this day the finest action game I've ever played, I don't know how the second game turned out to be several tiers below in overall quality. Although God of War 2 doesn't deserve a 0 score (probably a 5 o 6), I simply chose it because of how overrated this game is. At least God of War 3 redeemed the franchise and Santa Monica Studio.

God of War II may in fact be the best action game ever made. It outdoes the original God of War in every way.

There are a few brilliant core improvements, such as the beautifully implemented grappling system that lets you swing around with your blades. But for the most part, the game's best features are context-specific things rather than features that change or improve the title as a whole...A stellar example of what can be done when a developer focuses on telling a story and lets that drive the game.
  3. It's not just one element that turned the game into a masterpiece, it's every element – the controls (perfection), world design (unbelievably creative), combat (exciting and challenging), and enemy selection (unreal) are just a few of the reasons why this is PS2’s best first-party release.
