had some crashes and bugs during the game. The story line is not that good. the game is a bit easy even on extreme survivor mode.

Expand

A good solid entry in to the franchise, it has everything you want to keep you busy for a long time and a solid story. I struggled to really get pulled in to it though, the game isn't immersive though as it just has so much filler of collectibles and side missionstombs. Still well worth playing though.

It's fun, isn't it? After Uncharted being so inspired in the original Tomb Raider series, it's so ironic that the new Tomb Raider era consists basically of trying to emulate Naughty Dog's hit. Where in the 2013 game, the character development of the new Lara, a normal person turning herself into a serial killer in order to survive in a mad island, here they deliver a mediocre storyline of a daddy issue suffering Lara that reminds the mediocre mid-2000s Tomb Raider games. Where she was more like a human being in the past game, here she's again just a rich person with nothing else to do, just **** around and obsessed with a discovery in a way that feels too similar (but not nearly as good) as Uncharted 3 storyline.

Then all the random soviet guys in the storyline, the now-mandatory wanna-be-open-world / crafting / hunting moments (inspired by Far Cry success but here it just simply feel boring), it never feels detailed and I can't care for the characters. The combat is ridicously easy and casual even on the more difficult sessions too.

The game is still casual fun, like a blockbuster action movie, but Uncharted is casual fun too (and with awful, Indiana-Jones ripped storylines too), but at least I have Drake and Sullivan who are among the finest modern characters in game and ND's level of detail, here you have a common AAA shooter which it happens to have legendary the Tomb Raider name on it.

I've played every TR game since first one and I think Rise of the Tomb Raider could be satisfying in previous decade, but not nowadays.

    Pros:
++ really amazing and scalable graphics
++ better "optional tombs" than in previous Tomb Raider
++ breathtaking views of nature and temples

    Cons:
-- flat story and characters: good guy was only good guy, bad guy was bad guy, there was no surprise in any way like in "B movie", the storyline didn't have any "wow" effect, every plot twist was foreseeable
-- dozens of same enemies is pure boredom in 2016, Tomb Raider is not Doom, it's not about quantity of enemies. Lara should have very low ammo whole game and I should think in every case, how to deal with particular enemy (in the similar way like it is in Alien:Isolation for example). This approach makes enemies more unique even when they are of the same type
-- unrealistic in every possible way (Lara movements, story, enemies, environment...). Good games are unrealistic only in some parts, but this is usually balanced with strict realism in others parts (e.g. Stalker had unrealistic story and enemies, but very realistic weapons, characters behavior and buildings environment)

NO classic Lara skin or duel pistols that is Lara crofts trade mark!!!, at least give player who are old school fan the option to choose such costumes.

the story is very mediocre and terrible predictable

    2. Buggy Tomb: One of the optional tombs appears to be broken due to a physics bug that does not allow you to climb to a certain space to continue. Thankfully, I was able to escape the tomb, but was not able to complete it.

    3. Lack of death scenes: I may be one for the few that enjoyed the harsh death scens of the previous game. Now everything just fades to black, and there is no dramatic end to Lara's life. I used to want to be careful, so as to not witness the jarring horrible death scenes, but now, I am no longer careful. I simply jump towards places I know I can't reach; attack bears I know I can't beat, etc.

    4. Too easy: The puzzles are far too easy.

The game has many more positives than negatives. The graphics, the raiding of the tombs, the satisfaction of killing someone with your axe and stealth gameplay to name a few.

Pretty good graphics, and entertaining for the most part, but towards the end of the game it starts getting really boring, the few puzzles are so easy and repetitive and the climbing system seems like a very big assasins creed ripoff, nothing too exciting or great about this game, just an average game that won't be remembered in the history of Tomb Raider.

Instead of taking the approach used in Tomb Raider 9, Rise of the Tomb Raider turns out quite different in almost every way. Somehow this isn't without a downside.

The combat has been drastically changed, straying from the guerrilla combat that was widely found favorable in the predecessor. Instead, most fights in Rise happen in a small alley and tends to dip you in a linear environment without as many covers as in TR9, especially the scene after Lara obtains her shotgun. For some more open combats, they mostly happen in restricted corridors with regularly-shaped construction and often symmetrically placed covers. Due to the new AI configuration that encourages the enemies to move in on you rather than stay behind a cover, you often find yourself overwhelmed by the heavily armored soldiers that are hard to kill with a few bullets. And sometimes the lack of covers or the lack of variety thereof cause a great deal of troubles in the attempts to flank, and because of the same reason you need to shoot more to win instead of using tactics. There are also many occasions where your aiming doesn't automatically fall on the correct side when you pop out from behind the cover, which was never a problem in TR9. Hence, the combat is rather disappointing at times.

Another obvious change is that Rise is more RPG-oriented than ever before, and it is best evidenced through its many side quests, which unfortunately require the player to make many a back-tracking, which for sure gets boring over time, as you'll find yourself going along the same path as you did in a previous side quest or a main quest, and the difference is that this time you won't fight enemies along the way.

The tombs are definitely a delightful comeback, but most of them are too simple to solve, as the puzzles either revolve around gravity or water physics, and there are rarely any thoughts out of the box. But aesthetically, they look excessively amazing and are absolutely among the most atmospheric tombs in the history of this franchise, but sadly the puzzles don't prove equal to the visual quality. Most of the tombs can be finished in less than 10 minutes, and the solution is often comprised of one single step.

When it comes to storytelling, this time it's been much of an improvement thanks to the more cinematic style delivered under the new powerful engine, but the story arc of Lara herself is much weaker than in TR9. Apart from her, other characters are just forgettable. The story itself doesn't have many twists, but is brimming with overreaching backstories that could be nuisances in fits and starts.

Despite all the weak points, Rise is an ambitious title which pays tribute to a lot of classic Tomb Raider games. Moments such as the fragile floor trips in certain tombs and Lara climbing in the ice cavern are conspicuously reminiscent of the similar sequences encountered in old installments. By and large, with good intention, the game hasn't been quite well executed, despite the conscientious efforts in graphics and music.

The denouement is a cliffhanger that secures a room for the sequel in future, which ends flat in its own right. Nevertheless, suffering from a slow pace is the culprit for the dissatisfying experience in addition to the unwise gameplay mechanics. Still, it doesn't kill the hope for next Tomb Raider to be a true improvement, and every fan of the series will sure look forward to that.

I loved the environments and character model/details, but found even the challenge tombs to be a bit too easy. Ok, I know they need to cater for a wide audience, and some people want a hardcore Lara Croft experience, and others want Uncharted, so I'm overall happy with this reboot sequel. The story is dull as dishwater, and Lara herself lacks a a bit of humour. Here's hoping for the next installment that there's more of a focus on puzzle-solving, platforming, and dare I say tomb-raiding? Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was almost convinced: this is one of the few games that I like to give a 10.
    But then the end happened.

Rise of the Tomb Raider(Rise for short) has Lara follow the same path she followed in the 2013 reboot. She gets dumped in a wilderness with nothing more than a makeshift bow to start out with. With meager resources you help her survive cold and hunger and make her way forward for the sake of curiosity and redemption. For those are Lara's primary motivations: to discover secrets out there that can benefit the world. (Lara actually has the well being of humanity on her mind: make a note of that) and to redeem her disgraced father who was bold enough to assert that there was a thing out there that gave life eternal. And the scientists, being the jerks they are, banned him for it, cause hat is how the coven of scientists operate of course: if you are not for us, you are against us. Disgraced, father Croft killed himself. Or so we are told.

So Lara sets out to vindicate her father, and her own name, by finding that divine source located in a lost city in the outback. This time around her boots take us to Siberia, after a little detour to Syria for the trail she follows starts with a prophet who preached his brand of Christianity in those regions around the 10th century AD in a country people nowadays mostly recall for the headlines: it is that place where everyone is fighting and bombing everyone because of reasons..

Now it is time for the Illuminati to step in, but since that trope has been beaten to death for far too often(for instance in the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) they renamed the nefarious organisation to Trinity and make them out to be a band of religious fanatics, of the christian kind to be on the safe side.

The evil boss is a guy named Konstantin who does evil because of reasons. Embrace the suffering, he whispers to one of his minions who has failed him, while he pushes his fingers into his victims eye sockets. He is connected to Ana, who is Lara's stepmother. Since we all know how stepmothers are, we know that it is just a matter of time before the proverbial poisonous apple surfaces and the hunter will be sent after the princess: treason. And so the story proceeds along a beaten track..

The real gem in the game is really Lara herself. She is so well done and so believable that you suffer through the story just to see what she will do next, what she will discover next and how she will develop next. You get to steer Lara through the world, unearthing treasure, solving puzzles, seeing marvelous sights, stalking wildlife and humans alike. And the game underscores this all with good music most of the time.

But then, in the end, the makers of this game get a brain seizure and trample over Lara's personality and motivations. They make her conclude that some things are not meant for humanity and have her reject to benefit mankind or to redeem her father's reputation.
    Why?
    Because of reasons.
There could have been many reasons to destroy the big secret but now Lara is set up as judge and jury over mankind. Humans are not meant to live forever, she says suddenly. How she got from "unearthing secrets to benefit mankind" to "it is not meant for mankind" is not made clear. It just happens.
This is called poor writing: having a character make a decision that isn't worked towards in the story line. This is the deus ex machina of decision making.
    But there is more.
In the epilogue yet another another u-turn is made for we are blatantly told next that discovering stuff for the benefit of humanity is what motivates Lara. Hold on. Did she not just destroy something that would benefit mankind because she was of the opinion that it wasn't meant for it mankind? How did she get from a to b and then back from b to a?

This flip flopping of Lara's personality takes the whole experience down several notches for the end apparently did nothing to her personality. In other words: she went through some kind of personality change instantly and reverted back instantly. What is it that has risen in Rise of the Tombraider?

My 10 thus dropped to a 7. It is a captivating game at first, but has a seriously broken character development. And the latter is something mankind can do without.

The gameplay is decent, nothing really new or innovative, but everything works. Stealth is done pretty well, even though there are some situations where it's almost impossible to take out the enemies by stealth alone.
And then there's the story. The story is not nearly as interesting or captivating as I'd expected it. A lot of illogical actions take place and at times the dialogue seems lacking any substance, despite the good voice acting. There are a few plots but nothing very deep or surprising.
Although the game is not short by any standard, it gets boring really fast mainly because there really are only 2 themes present in it: ancient Greek ruins, and frozen tundra/wasteland. A few colorful tombs here and there but nothing memorable. The puzzles aren't hard, but not very satisfying either.
No real replay value except for the achievements.
In any case, it's a game worth playing, and I am looking forward to the next one in the coming series. I think there is a lot of room for improvement, and I'd like to see how the series evolves.

I don't understand one thing - If Uncharted 4 is 93, how come this is 86? I really don't get it. It starts to get repetitive in the second open area, collectibles are completely worthless and they're in every corner, so if you want co collect them, you have to stop 100 times even during the main story missions in every single linear corridor (which btw each mission is). This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was really psyched for this game but it was not meant to be. The technical aspects of the game are great I guess, but the actual gameplay is quite boring with a much smaller world to boot. The story is very similar to the original game which makes sense as part of a franchise except it's *too* similar and even worse, it's missing aspects of its predecessor that made the story exciting. For instance, you aren't pushed to uncover the truth about a centuries-old legend. Instead of using your imagination, you're spoon-fed most of it. You aren't gripped with suspense for hours on end; you already know what you're looking for and the gist of what it does, and there's no life-or-death struggle. Lara could go home and retire in ignominy if she left Kitezh valley; not so on Yamatai. Even Ana's deception is so pointless! You aren't allowed time to become attached to that relationship, so it's anti-climactic when it's revealed. And when she dies at the end, you don't feel loss like you would if there was a tangible bond between the two. Instead, you wish she had suffered more. Not only that but so much of the plot is lifted directly from Tomb Raider! You have an army of immortal zombie warriors, a volcanic region, a loved one in harm's way, a selfish traitor, an eleventh-hour gambit of impossible odds, etc. And at the very end of the story, you get this bad taste in your mouth b/c you realize she basically aided a false prophet / war criminal / slave driver. Honestly, the 2013 version was absolutely epic 9.5... this deserves a 6.0.

Good game, bad port. Performance on my (fully updated) system (4790k, 16g ram, 780 ti, w10) is subpar. With high textures, FXAA, and everything else maxed, the game hovers around the high 30's FPS. Unfortunately, lowering the settings doesn't do much. At this point, the game looks a bit worse than the Xbox One version, which I have played. It's not acceptable for such a system to barely be able to keep up with the Xbox One. That's nonsense.

Other than that, it's a great game, and an improvement on the previous one. Just be aware that if you don't have a 1500$+ system, you're probably going to have a bad time.

NOTE: Since the game hasn't been cracked, if you're thinking about buying it to see how it runs and then refunding if you are not happy, DON'T be fooled by how well the game runs on the initial snowy zones (like many people who make "port reports" have done). It's in the later areas that the framerate tanks to oblivion.

I game with awesome gameplay, but poorly optimized for the PC. It's definately playable, but if you have an i5 or less expect it to be bottlenecking your graphics card.

I liked the 2013 game better. This one had great graphic and a decent plot. But, oh did the parkour get tedious. So much so that I was in the temple and I got to the point where I had enough and just deleted the game before ending it. The side missions became boring as well. I'm more of a FPS guy.

Although still a gourgeous game, Rise of The Tomb Raider takes itself too seriously storywise, reminding me of Underworld days (which is not good).

Close to the ending Lara has so many gadgets and mechanics that they start to overlap one another, making controls complicated and a bit clunky. It also doesn't evolve much from its former itineration: Lara is still a war machine

It also doesn't evolve much from its former itineration: Lara is still a war machine disguised as a puppy and supporting characters are as forgettable as the cast from the last one. Gameplay feels old and a bit outdated, as if it was developed as a last-gen title.

Great for fans, whoever enjoys third person shooters and liked the last Tomb Raider, but don't expect much of an evolution in all aspects of this game.

Rise feels more like a Tomb Raider game than the 2013 reboot, which is good, but at the same time still retains most of it's overly streamlined game designs, which isnt as good from where i'm standing.

The graphics quality is still strong even in 2021, strengthened by an impressive art design in and around the ancient historical environments that pack a great amount of detail. Lara herself is more mixed looking, her facial overhaul makes her look kinda generic even compared to her 2013 self.

Performance on PC can be problematic, in open world areas there is quite a lot of stutter, freeze ups and big fps drops, especialy in the Soviet gulag area, while in linear sections game runs mostly fine.

Gameplay wise, the exploration in Rise feels more fleshed out than in TR 2013. While tomb raiding sadly remains 'optional', these tombs luckily offer way more depth and personality than their TR 2013 counterparts, however they still lack in the department of satisfying puzzle solving, as they are still relatively simplistic, and the rewards for solving tombs...rudimentary skills, not some cool relics. A new addition are the Crypts, which are like mini optional tombs which add some welcome variety. I wasnt a big fan of the bigger hub areas, they felt more like a chore to explore and traverse, i would've much prefered a more linear level design over them. Not to mention once you reach a big hub area, it breaks up the pacing of the game's main story, creating a feeling of disconnection between it's urgency and leasureness of Lara binging side activities. The progression locking of some areas disappointingly returns too, the very first Siberian area you land in has places that you cant reach early on, like why should i back track there late in the game ? The optional game modes were wasted time and resources in my opinion aswell, that could've been put to better use by expanding on campaign or story DLC.

Core gameplay remains pretty much the same as in 2013 title, gunplay feels rather floaty with little feel, you cant take cover manually, stealth is done for you by the game aswell, all this hand holding is just so irritating. And to my deep disappointment, the dual pistols, that were teased in 2013 game's ending, are no where to be found. Some guns still sound really weak. For some dumb reason you're not allowed to remove silencers anymore once the game applies them. There are now more skills and weapon upgrades to unlock, but i dont get why they made Lara unlock some of the same skills she already learned in 2013 game. Several of the skills i found either rudimental or making the game way too easy for me. Some of the weapon upgrades make guns look goofy, sadly they cant be removed once applied, just like silencers. Platforming sadly remains pretty simplified, and at times glitchy, leading you to death at not your own fault. None of Lara's classic advanced acrobatic moves return either sadly, apart from an added ability to swing across select places with a hook. Swimming makes a return, but it too mechanically somehow feels less satisfying than in CD's earlier Tomb Raider games. Atleast this time Lara has more clothing options compared to 2013, most of whom are pretty boring still, and sadly there are still no classic outfits, apart from a few low polygon classic Lara skins. What is CD's problem with their reluctance to give modern Lara classic series outfits ?

The story and writing had their ups and downs. The duo of the main villains come off as pretty generic and cliche, but a bit deeper they do reveal some depth, especially Konstantin's sister. The 'relatable' and 'real' approach to Lara's character still conflicts with what you see and experience, like in the 2013 reboot, she's forced to survive...again...in one moment, she's a 1 woman army at another, a melodramatic weeper the next. Maybe it's just me, but i think this 'humanization' attempt of Lara Croft just isnt working that well, instead Crystal D should just embrace her larger than life legacy as a character, Lara should be Lara, not an imitation of a Naughty Dog kind of a protagonist. The chase after the city of Kitezsh, the Divine Source and mystery behind the Prophet was handled pretty well atleast, and exploring Croft family's history was fun aswell, enhanced by the Blood Ties DLC. With the Baba Yaga DLC also being a worthy addition to campaign's narrative. The ending of the game however felt quite anti-climactic, the whole end game felt like it was redone from the 2013 game, as you were again climbing a towering structure to reach the end boss and waves of goons. One of the better narrative aspects were the side stories and lore discovered through collectible documents, recordings and artefacts, they added a good amount of depth to the world building. Though it was weird how those documents and recordings just lay out in the open, some managing to survice for hundreds of years in less than optimal climate.

    Good game overall.

Seré yo pero no me gusto ni la historia ni el gameplay, si no fuera porque se ve bien tal vez no hubiera pasado de las 7 horas de juego.

    Stagnant gameplay.
Some slight innovations from the previous game.
    Setting is uninteresting.
Highlight of the game is the baba yaga dlc but even that isnt worth the price.

Lara Croft's latest adventure represents some of the best platforming in 3D you can get. A paradoxical mix of brutal reality and crazy Indiana Jones action.
