The action is intense and out of panic in the middle of a tank bombardment and infantry invasion it happened that I have bayoneted my team mate... Sometimes I want to hide, want to survive don't care about objectives and take it personal with the bayonet on snipers and mindless grenade throwers. The feeling of immersion is there for sure. Sometimes you feel very little and vulnerable. Maybe a little less so than in the original with its very vast maps but still, the game gets to you. The only problem I have with the game are the aspects that it inherits from typical main straim FPS: spawn protection system, auto team balancing,.. for all those mechanics better solutions exist than the ones that have been implemented. Honestly I find the game mothering too much its players and restricting it. War is hell but stick to the rules and die a hero by the book type of thing. To bad the game does not offer full freedom for any strategy to intensify the real dirty war experience and let your instincts run free. I hope they make those configurable in server switches and network game browser filters.

There are (graphic) lag issues on 32-64 player servers. Turning down the graphics to high instead gave me 30 percent higher frame-rate up from a poor 20-25fps. Hope some future tweaking will bring further improvements. I don't doubt this game will be fully supported for many years to come, both by its community and Tripwire.
Red Orchestra 2 is a different league. For some there is no alternative.

After having about 60 hours in Beta and 6 or so on retail (Pretty much the same), I can safely say I have a good understanding of the game. I'm gonna keep this review short and to the point in a hope to let people know what the game is like.

    My specs - i7 @ 3.5, 260core216OC, 6 gigs, win7.

    -- The Good --

Graphics - 9 - Better than BC2 by far, but no where close as other PC specific titles. They have a very distinct feel stripped strait from the time period the game takes place in. The mood is dark and gritty as it should be and often times you will stop in combat to look at how much detail went into making each individual room look unique and authentic. For example I found a cellar on a map and it was detailed to the point of RPG type levels. I almost wanted to sit down at the desk and read the book near the lamp that gave off a nice warm glow while forgetting a battle for life and death was going on outside.

The lighting is probably the strong point with this game. Shadows are actual shadows and theirs no avoiding having to squint to figure out if that silhouette is an enemy in that dark corner.

After tweaking settings I'm able to get a stable 45+ with my rig and theirs no mouse lag like in other games even if you played at 30.

Game play - 9 - What else can be said about the game play other than it's as close to war as you might want to get. Each individual map supports new strategy when engaging your enemies whether that be close range or from a distance. You must master the class you pick in order to survive in the conditions presented to you and often times failure can be as exciting as victory. Choose the assault class and you need to be somewhat run and gun clearing out rooms and generally getting into the face of your enemy. Choose a class with bolt action and you're deadly at mid/high ranges and able to do deadly melee attacks with a bayonet if needed. Picking Support classes that use either MG's or Anti tank weaponry and you can now see how the strategy of the game unfolds. Nothing will ever be as fun as blowing up a tank who has killed 10 of your buddy's with some charges carefully placed as you run for cover.

Gun play is a huge selling point for this game and it shows. Weapons act just like they would in life, and the addition of free weapon movement and weapon collision with objects gives you a sense of depth other shooters don't have.

    - Sound -8- Not much to say other than it's good. Weapons seem a little week especially the MG and Mp40, but bolt action rifles sound amazing and blow your ears off. I don't really know much about weapon sounds but I suspect they do so I won't go into detail on this.

    - The Bad -

The game still crashes out for most people I know. I have experienced it many times myself but so far none since retail release (Crosses Fingers). Their are also many other bugs reported and people are generally having FPS issues on beast rigs.

Artillery strikes will end your good FPS until they subside. Good thing I'm hiding at that point anyways, but sometimes the frame stutter when it happens can ruin a combat situation.

Cover system while good in most situations can also get you killed. Once you learn how to work it however it becomes a valuable addition to your tactics (Blind firing around corners has saved me many times).

    The verdict?

It may not be everyone cup of tea, but by no means is this a "Bad" game. People may have issues with the bugs and performance but the core game play is rock solid and is easily one of the best shooters I have played in years.

The gameplay is still essentially RO with some essential features added (bullet penetration, being able to dynamically take cover behind objects of any height, controllable breathing and zooming, etc.). In some details it has a little less of that RO feel, though - guns barely sway even when held unsupported, for example. Perhaps it's better overall this way, it's hard to judge these things without taking all other aspects of the game balance into consideration, but it takes some getting used to for an RO veteran. There are also some assorted bugs - problems with the server browser, sometimes I miss a respawn ingame, now and then I get a wierd bug where the gun won't fire on first click.. none of which stops me from enjoying the game, but these little annoyances make it less fun than it should be, they make it feel more like the beta of a great game than a great game's live release. As for performance, my new pc runs it smoothly on 'ultra' (i7 not overclocked yet, 2x 6950 1GB, 8GB ram). The game is also playable on my old xp machine with 'normal' graphics (core2duo 2.4ghz, radeon 3870 512MB, 2GB RAM). I don't doubt the people reporting performance problems, but for my part I have no complaints. All in all it's a 10/10 game being held back by some problems as mentioned above, it could use some patching (which I trust Tripwire to provide in due time), still a great game and an easy 8/10 in spite of that. I'm new to the series, but being completely bored of the mindless console port BS that most shooters are now days, I gave this game a shot. This game is delightfully and refreshingly hard! No running and gunning here. You have to go slow, keep your head down and work with your team. The lack of floating names above people, the cover system, the bolt action rifles, the iron sights, the way you freak out when getting shot at, adds a learning curve (and immersion) that I think is missing from most other shooters. First couple sessions were frustrating while getting used to the feel of the game and the mechanics, I'll happily admit that. However I kept at it for a while, and I'm really enjoying it now! Not a game for the majority, but I'm really glad I went down the FPS path less traveled. If you aren't a S--- talking xbox live kiddie, you might like to join me. Expand

For whatever reason, the dev's added NPC tannk crewmembers. THis might be ok - if they did not also shoot the guns for you. Very easy to park a tank in a key location, particularly as Axis, and let your super-soldier NPC AI friends mow down everyone coming in. They are far more accurate than they should be, I have exploited this a few times - but it's not really fun, just obnoxious. The tanks also feel like moving a cardboard box around instead of driving.

Oh - the upgrade weapons! IN their infinite wisdom, they added a bunch of weapons that were never mass produced, such as the precusor to the AK-47. Instead of a deliberately paced rifle shooter, we end up with a blandly themed, poorly performing CoD World at War 2.0 - everyone and their mom is running around with some unusual weapon.

I hope the idiots that published this trash enjoy their Lamborghini - I will never buy anything from them - or associated with their names - again. Complete rip off - you get a handful of maps some of which don't even work. It also crashes frequently and the netcode is so bad pings average 300ms with a very fast connection.

Tripwire constantly say they go for realism, yet this game is full of weapons that unbalance the game that weren't even in the real battle for Stalingrad, and yet, the most popular SMG which is the PPSH41 with a drum mag is not even there until you grind a big chunk of your life in this already frustrating game (that unless the system bugs out and unlocks it for you instantly).

It seems that this game had no direction, no focus or specific audience, and Tripwire doesn't seem to have the skills to pull of such an ambitious project, and they think it can live alienating the existing fanbase with all their troll decisions.

Well, the result is that the previous game is a much better game, and the Scores speak for themselves.

I feel ashamed for recommending this game to my friends, my advice, if you want the best WW2 shooter, get Red Orchestra: Ostfront instead.

Being a RO1 player, I enjoyed the RO2 improvements to infantry combat (long range combat is less frustrating, I like how you need to manually zero in your sights if you want to hit targets past 100m) and the that movement system is overall less clunky. There were some things I didn't like about the game that aren't caused by bugs, such as killcams (almost every server has them enabled), and the idea that the devs combined a cover/use/give ammo command into one universal command; it was unclear to me that the cover button doubled as the use key until I learned it myself, with no proper documentation (no game manual).

In terms of visuals it might look average compared to other UE3 games like Bulletstorm, but remember that RO2 levels are extremely large with large view distances that can support up to 64 player tank + infantry battles. In that regard, it's relatively good and plus the atmosphere that's conveyed through the visuals is depressingly realistic. It also runs well on my PC on Ultra settings at around 40-70 fps which is good. Sound design is also excellent, guns sound like their real life equivalent and the music sets a great mood although I wish there was a checkbox to disable it (atm you need to manually set the music volume to 0)

Now, by this time many people now about the game's extremely buggy release and have refunded their purchase as a result; that was a poor decision since Tripwire is known for delivering quality, consistent FREE patches and updates that not only fix most of the glitches or bug, but they add upon the gameplay (see killing floor for an example). And as for the day 1 unlocks not working, they obviously didn't want that to happen and it was a bug that no one could expect; Tripwire didn't lie to the consumer on that because they didn't expect the unlocks to bug up. The only real bugs I get annoyed with are related to stat tracking (some servers track your stats, some don't) and the bug that doesn't let you fire your bolt action rifle when you zoom in initially.

Overall this is a good game that suffered an unfortunate buggy release (like Bad Company 2 and Black Ops on PC). If you like relatively hardcore shooters and have the patience to wait for Tripwire to fix the glaring bugs affecting gameplay (they already are releasing a patch which will fix a good deal of the current crash bugs) you should get this game. RO2 requires some patience and learning so don't just drop the game if you find it frustrating. This game will definitely shine in the future, once the free content patches and various mods flood in for it. For those of you wondering about my specs, I have: i5-760 2.8ghz, 4gb ddr2 ram, EVGA GeForce 460SE 1024mb with the beta 280.19 drivers running at ultra detail in 1680x1050.

I love the great atmosphere, that is much harsher than in other FPS. This is because of the unique mixture of realism, sounds of explosions, dying and wounded comrades, the suppression mechanics, WWII typical graphics etc.- I think this is as close as a current computer game can get to real war experience.

They didn´t mention it would be a bad call of duty clone. They didn´t mention it would not work on alot of rigs. The reason for releasing this beta instead of a finished product was simple: money. With BF3 and Modern warfare 3 soon to be released aswell, tripwire figured if they were first on the scene they could get alot of people waiting for those games to buy RO2 and play while they awaited the other games. It worked with the preorder, on the day of RO2´s release there where around 10.000 players at peak hours. After a week that number was less than 3000. Now, six months later, this game is stuggles to get above 1000. Is it a good beta then? Sadly not even that. Besides the bucketload of bugs, still unadressed six months after release there are still alot of things that will never be changed. The biggest and most gamebreaking one of these things is the netcoding. When you fire a weapon, you have to lead for ping. And because the ping is never consistent, you have to guess where your shot will land. We can thank Ramm for that one, among other things. This might be fixed by modders, who in all likelyhood will do a better job than the amateurs at tripwire. Add to this a less than customer friendly attitude of some of the teripwire team *cough* Rammjaeger *cough* this experience has lead me to decide to never spend any more my hard earned money on products coming from Tripwire.

We can't talk 'bout realism if a PTRS round is able to pass through the front armor of a tank turret and kill its gunner, if a soldier can heal himself with a patch after taking so 2-3 rifle bullets at close range but a binocular stab or a bayo kills instantly, if someone is not able to lay down near a wall 'cause "he's too close to it", if grenades are deadly only if you throw them really close to the opponents (if someone knows how deadly nades are)... We can't talk 'bout a complete game since there are still bad bugs (falling through the terrain after spawning, getting stuck to the walls with a tank or in a hole while trying to find cover, watching through texture etc etc), the game is not completed (campaign still missing, 2 bad coded tanks only and still 9 maps, some of them are really unbalanced), there's lack of players ( at the moment, 500 at max as far as I know and see) which means that there's a lack of general interest, there's not a proper cheat detection (just have a look on youtube), it requires a good rig otherwise you'll go pixel hunting most of the times... It's too expensive for what it really offers. I still play the game and still hope it will get better, but for now I suggest you to save your moneys and play something else untill it will be fixed, new maps will come out and, hopefully, we will have the same feeling of playing Ostfront back. If you like sniping and don't mind sitting at the same spot for 10 minutes until some poor sod enters your machinegun scope so you can snipe him off with single fire, then this is the game for you. Really well done has some bugs at the moment but which release hasn't considering the size of the studio its an fantastic game som of the best sounds effects I heared in my gaming life so far.
If your the COD kind of guy who loves to run and gun youll simply hate this game as pretty much every gun will take you down in one shot no stupid perks and stuff your not a one men army you have to

I really enjoy the game. The beta was a bit buggy on day1 but the patch fixed most major issues. I'm looking forward for new updates and mods that 'll come out later this year.

Im giving it 10 just becouse i know all the bugs will be fixed, on my rig game runs pretty smooth with everything maxed out (580gtx) in fullhd, performance issues are obviously only on some rigs and that will be fixed. What really needs to be fixed is server browser.
This is best ww2 game ever, you feel like in real battle and its still fun. Im giving extra credits for incriesed stamina.

I honesty don't know how many patches and how long it will take the modding community to make this game playable. This release was a complete disaster at best. Who the heck opens a public beta 2 weeks before official release?? Considering how awful the game is at current state I don't think Tripwire even cared to be honest if the game was buggy or not. Worst still is how people perfectlyI honesty don't know how many patches and how long it will take the modding community to make this game playable. This release was a complete disaster at best. Worst still is how people perfectly accept and embrace the fact that it's buggy and won't dare complain infront of Tripwire. I mean as a paying customer people should be fuming, instead "It keeps crashing, buggy as hell but still a great game". Game is poorly optimized, crashing bugs, broken cover and leveling system, outdated physics, servers bugged, some ranked servers are unranked.. you got the idea. An epic waste of money, should of used on horse racing bets instead that's all I can say.
If you don't believe me then have a look for your self, visit the steam forums and so on. If you are still that desperate then wait a couple of months for some heavy patching and pray for modders to sort this mess out

Suddenly I'm not so impatient for BF3.
RO2 is an awesome ww2 multiplayer shooter, that is slower paced and more tactical than your average online fps. It also has some fantastic ballistics/gun mechanics.

I know this game doesn't deserve a 10 out of 10. Nevertheless, I decided to put that score since there are a lot of people bashing it without reason.
RO2 is a welcome addition to the FPS genre, taking the mechanics of its predecessor and improving over them. It's not a particularly polished game (it has some bugs in the server browser and some gameplay bugs)
But I know Tripwire won't let

But I know Tripwire won't let this game die. They are 20 guys working against the clock to bring their vision to life and they won't rest until it's working without major flaws.
Killing Floor and RO1 had many bugs on launch date and now they are completely playable.
I'd also like to point out that BF: BC2 had a non functional server browser on launch.

I'd say that the game easily deserves an 8 out of 10 in its current state. I'd also like to point out that it's 23.99 in many places (or 29.99-35.99 in others) which is a lot less than 49.99 (standard price for PC games).

Not perfect, but fun and realistic. As the first Red Orchestra you can only love or hate it, there's no a middle solution. If you love adrenalinic and fast shooters wait for Modern Warfare 3 or Battlefield 3, but, if yoo are looking for the real war Red Orchestra 2 is the choice. Not for children...
    COME ONE FRIZ! ;)

I took part in the beta as I wanted to give some feedback to the devs regarding how the game plays and maybe ways it can be improved.

The game plays OK for me and it appears much better than the beta, however, some players cannot run it or it crashes during play, I don't have those problems so hopefully the devs are looking into it and will resolve those issues. The maps are big

The maps are big compared to some other FPS games I've played, it's a very tactical game and requires a little thought before moving towards a position (Territory), running and gunning can and will get you killed very quickly.

I haven't tried all the weapons in the game yet but of those I have used they seem effective and do the job.

The best part of the game for me is atmosphere, the sound of a weapon in the distance or artillery raining down on my position is very good.

The game does have a few problems, cover/use/bandage assigned to 1 key needs to be changed, lockdown timer needs to go, that stops any kind of tactical play as the game then becomes a mad rush for the cap before the timer runs out, these are small things but some were mentioned during the beta and are still in the full release. I only hope that Tripwire are reading their forums and the Steam forums and taking the feedback from the players as a good thing, I want the game to be perfect and at the moment it isn't, some players do have major problems so hopefully they will be fixed.

I enjoy the game but the little irritating bugs, some mentioned above, stop me from giving the game a higher rating.

The basic fact is that Red Orchestra 2 spoils you. Playing any other shooter, especially one that claims to be realistic, after going through a few rounds in RO2 is bound to be a disappointment.

The multiplayer of Red Orchestra 2 offers various interesting debate points about the realistic online shooter breed: praised by many, played by few. Forgetting some bugs and the (hopefully) soon to be addressed performance hiccups, Red Orchestra 2 is definitely an entertaining product that, online-wise, will guarantee months of brutal fun.

If you think both Battlefield and Call of Duty are too exaggerated and unrealistic, and feel Counter-Strike is too soft, Red Orchestra 2 might be the game for you. It doesn't appeal to us, though.
