I dont mind the cartoon type graphics, its a high fantasty game after all I love the funny personalities and the cool magic weapons, at last a magic weapon that really kicks butt! THE CHAKRAS! In some other games being a commited magic user was impossible, but in thIs game my character can really have fun just being a mage and im loving that. I am also looking forward to trying out the other builds in future replays. Im on my first playthrough and am managing most missions without problems and very few bugs, well none so far which is excellent imo. The story is ok but I do get side tracked easily by people I meet who need help and I really want to help them, their storues are interesting and fun. Would love some flirting or romance options but glad its not done badly as in skyrim, better no romance than what skyrim had to offer.
One thing that has really annoyed me about this game and many others too I might add is that although many mage armours have different names they all look the same, the only thing that cahnges is the stats. I am up to level 18 with about a weeks worth of playing, MANY many hours and I have only found about four different armour designs. Its a bit disappointing as I love the way I can see my character whenever I want too and I am able to change her hairstyle and colour and accessories etc. Love that, yaay! But I would love a much better range of armour styles. One of the best ever games for this was Neverwinter Nights 2. They had hundreds of different armours and styles, man what a game that was!!
Oh and another thing, Anders from Dragon Age, the mage? His voice is everywhere in this game and I am really tired of meeting people and hearing his voice, he must have done about a third of the voice acting jobs, he was even in the latest star wars game too, just becoming too familiar to me. I dont like that.
I think the crafting system is nice, I am enjoying using it. I love the skills system, easy and straightforward for me and I think the maps and map travel is lovely. I wish I had a unicorn to ride on though, hehe. I am still in honeymoon phase with this game as in enjoying it very very much and am hoping I continue to do so. Just edited my score as I think this game is more and 8 than a 9.

Kingdoms of Amalur is a fun enough game, similar in style and gameplay to other action RPGs like Fable. On the plus side, it's got a pretty big world, with a load of quests to do and decent character design. On the other hand, the setting, storyline and many environments (caves, I'm looking at you) are rather generic, which is both surprising and disappointing considering who was involved.

Although many reviews state that the game is bug free, mine isn't. I had some instances during combat, when the camera had a mind of its own and sometimes clipped through the ground, obscuring the enemies right in front of me. Speaking of clipping, when I was in town, many chickens were clipping through fences and people. Speaking of clipping, when I was in town, many chickens were clipping through fences and people. However, other than these two bugs, the game is totally bug free. The game had its own share of pros and cons. Some things I did not like about the game was the character customization menu in the beginning of the game. I could hardly create a character that I was satisfied with, due to the many presets in the menu. Another con I would like to bring up is the mute character. The developers could have at least put in a few preset voices for us to choose from. A pro of the game that really defines it is the real-time combat. Other than that, the game is very well-voiced and had a good generous level system, also the 100 long hours of side quests, more if you include the dlc. Overall, Amalur has everything you expect from any RPG, only taken to a higher level. If you are sick and tired of all those normal RPG games, be sure to pick this one up. Expand

I will say I liked everything up to the end of the first zone. After you start to get the hang of it it looks allot like fable 3. The problem with fable 3 and this game as well is the lack of a large persistent environment. Games like this and state that "the game has an open world feel" should live up to that standard instead of saying one thing and get something entirely different. The game is actually very instanced. You will have to load from you zone to another, every time you enter a house in a village(which they are what, like 3?) and have to like the invisible walls that are everywhere in game that limit your ability to freely maneuver over objects such as hills or anything that doesn't have a preset action. The large open world that was promised felt like barely one zone in any standard mmo today. The more i progressed the more I couldn't help but thinking open world isn't one tiny area connected to many many very tiny areas. The dungeons were uninspiring and everything after the desert was enough for me. As soon as i got to the desert area i knew what i got myself into... an impulse buy. My advice is not to buy this game if you are expecting an offline mmo. This is a cookie cutter action RPG wanna be with big words and little to show for it. The 50 bucks they wanted when it came out wasn't worth it and now that it's on sale on steam for half that it's not worth it. If I ever see it in the .99 bin I might pick it up if I am very very very bored. Expand

I decided I need to downgrade the game more. Great initial concepts with horrid execution. Bad porting of console controls. Mediocre graphics. Horrible voice acting. Bland quests. Horrible facial animations and out of sync dialog. I pretty much only give it 5 due to the concepts. Execution is TERRIBLE. Avoid this unless its really cheap and you have nothing else to do.

It doesn't require you to use special abilities to win fights but also doesn't make it seem like hack and slash is the easiest way to conquer this title. So far I have logged 26 hours into this game and I am still attached to the storyline and am still developing my play style. I play on Hard and I can honestly say that it is a challenge and the rewards are oh so glorious. The side quests are boring? They alter entire villages and quest lines? For example you can wipe out an entire village or just kill the boss. You can kill villagers as you please. And they stay dead. Simple minded MMO for solo? Maybe so, but at least the quests are better and more interesting then most MMO's and RPG's. Outdated graphics? Maybe so, but considering how it is generally open world with no load screens? Exception of course being when you enter a dungeon or house. The largest flaw I found was the camera but that's easy to fix, it's called a right joy stick. This game was advertised as your standard RPG level-up with side quests and with publisher 38 studios and their normal take on graphics I got exactly what I expected and more. Sorry to those who don't see it the same way, but before judging this RPG try playing others that this one is in competition with, WoW is a good one to start. At least the combat in this game makes you think and move. Expand

You can build your character by mixing skills from might, finesse and magic three skill trees. It also had diablo-like loot drop mechanics and a decent crafting system. So basically your character is very customizable. One major strength of this game is actually the combat since it's very flexible on how you want to fight. You can play as a mighty warrior smashing foes with huge hammers, as a powerful mage shooting fireballs and lightening bolts as a stealth rogue backstabbing enemies unnoticed or combine all fighting styles together. the combat action is fast-paced and satisfying no matter what fighting style you choose to play. KoA's fantasy setting is well thought-out but not interesting compare to, say, Skyrim. the quests became quite boring quickly and I end up just not caring about the story anymore after a while. in a word, if you want a rpg to immerse yourself in a fantasy world then KoA is not really a good choice, however if you just want to have some fun, this is the game to play. This game is not bad at all. Lots of fun, predictable storylines, stuff to do, and a good time waster. This reminds me a lot of a cartoon-like Skyrim. The game is shallow, but lots of fun. Downsides? Very dated graphics, unintuitive keyboard mapping. Otherwise, not a bad game, but NOT worth the $59.99 retail price. Buy this on sale.

The game itself was very much enjoyable, minus the jittery camera movements and aside from the fact that the demo itself had to be tweaked a bit to have it work properly.

The numerous weapon types and crafting made the game fun and different, but the Chakrams, in my opinion, were a little too overpowered. I found myself always wanting the use the Chakrams for their range and power.

As for the game, story is nothing special and kinda forgettable. I followed it to a point and then it lost me. Too complex for it's own good. The graphics/gameplay/combat/gear/enemies/musical score are right up there with the best. The combat alone makes this game stand out. I love Skyrim (and no I'm not comparing the two games) but I had a ton more fun playing K of A. I just don't see how/why people are knocking this title? I can only assume they didn't give it a chance. It just gets better and better the more I play it. I'm playing The Old Republic also at the moment and it (TOR) feels like a chore to play in comparison to K of A. There will always be ways to improve any game and it does have a crappy menu system which is a shame. I would give the game a solid 8 out of 10 but will give it 10 out of 10 to equal out the unfair negative reviews. There is no way in this world it deserves anything lower than a 5. First of all, the environment graphics look a bit old and i personally don't like their being cartoony. Furthermore i found out that although there are some interesting quests, most are very simple kill this, go there, kill that, bring me that and so. One of the things that I didn't like at all though, is the camera angle, which get frustrating many times, especially in the middle of fights. Then we have the battles themselves. I have to say that i really enjoyed the rogue player i had, moving out of the way an killing enemies from behind, but then again on the other hand, i can't jump? seriously...?... The customization options were pretty good too. It's great fun. The main story doesn't fare quite as well as the gameplay, mainly because of the flawed execution. There's a very small amount of cutscenes for a story this grand and as a result what could have been an awesome, epic tale feels much, much smaller. For example, at about 1/3 of the story the Fateless One (you), has to put together an army to defeat the evil Tuatha. But after doing tons of quests and gaining new allies, there's never a point where you actually get to see this massive army in all its glory. Ever. You talk about it, it comes up in plenty of conversations, but you never, ever see it. Aside from this main complaint however, KoAR is a truly engrossing game with tons of content. Even the DLC is very much worth picking up for what it adds to the game. Each expansion adds a new little continent that you can explore, a new story line for each, lots of new side quests, and the Dead Kel DLC even gives you your own castle to renovate, and then lets you play ruler over the surrounding lands. It's just a small meta-game, but it's very fun and quite addictive. As far as presentation, the game isn't very detailed, but this is one of the cases where the art design kind of made up for the lack of sharpness in the graphics, because there are truly some great looking and imaginative areas, but ofcourse they would have benefited from some extra polish. The sound effects and voice acting are good, if not great, but my main complaint with the sound is the music, which is very scarce and limited. Overall, this game and its DLC are worth buying for fans of RPGs and action games alike, thanks to the fast paced, arcadey combat, hundreds and hundreds of side quests and the hours and hours of pure, high fantasy entertainment on offer. It's just a shame that the developers shut down before they could make a sequel to fix some of this game's problems, because I truly believe that a second trip to Amalur that opens up more of the world and fixes what few issues this game had, could have easily achieved true greatness. The graphics aren't the greatest and there are few bugs here and there, but I'd rather play a game that has over 90 hours of game play and depth than a game with high graphics and no depth and short play time. Something doesn't feel quite right. Maybe the game mechanics? Or maybe the weapons? Or the char class? Maybe the game wasn't for everybody. It's not that bad for me, it's just.......... mediocre.

The studio has long promised, but yet to deliver, a patch to fix a camera annoyance and the difficulty level. The failure to deliver has been pretty disappointing and I've shelved the game before finished because I'm too bored with the impossible-to-lose fights (I can literally go make a snack and come back to find myself still alive with 3-4 mobs beating on me to no effect). The studio (which appears to be having financial issues) is now working on an MMO. This seems like a terrible idea to me: too much competition and the world they have is much too generic to be interesting. I suspect this will sink the studio. Too bad, since Kingdoms of Amalur shows good promise with a little more focus on single-player rpg gameplay. Expand

Thousands of side quests available, farming and crafting, making decisions during the story and the ability to try different classes mid game if your bored of the one you are using. I found my self excited to explore a world that R.A Salvatore has written and do every side quest possible. However, just as quickly as you saw the potential, it is just as quickly washed away. Before long you realize you are doing the same quests over and over and over. The main story becomes so incredibly boring that you will start to skip the dialogue scenes. By the last areas on the map, I was walking past every side quest possible and only doing main story quests which lead up to a pretty disappointing and anti-climactic ending. The diversity of the each map area was also disappointing. From having areas with lots of trees, to area that have not as many trees. As well as a small assortment of enemies that only change in color as the game gets harder. Its by no means a horrible game and I believe that this game could only be as good as you make it. I was getting bored of it, because I tried to do everything which in turn let me see just how much this game is a rinse and repeat. For those who need a small fix of mmo without having to pay online to play, this MAY be something of interest to you. If you do, you will enjoy it more if you are a loot gamer, as this game is filled with it. In final, for those that do want to purchase this, it's definately not worth $59.99. It's well put together and perhaps well considered but the gameplay is entirely lacking, the story uninteresting and there are numerous problems with the interface and combat systems for PC. I will say that they shipped it relatively bug free and I had no problem with compatibility. However, the PC version was clearly second fiddle to the consoles and it plays like it.

Like many have said, this looks and plays like an MMO--particularly World of Warcraft, outdated and cartoonish graphics included along with boring and entirely unoriginal quests. Most quests consist of fetch 5 X, kill Y. Add to that the character leveling system and it's definitely necessary to grind your way through all these mundane tasks in order to make progress in the game. The game touts its open world, but even that manages to feel incredibly linear and exploring it is wholly unsatisfying. For guys who worked on the masterpiece of a world, Morrowind, I have a hard time accepting that the rather boring (yet brightly colored) environments were all they could come up with.

With the actual gameplay, I think it would certainly feel much more natural using a controller than a mouse. It is incredibly irritating, if using a mouse, to have your camera pointed in one direction while your character is pointed slightly in a different direction, and you press W to move or you attack only to have your character move or swing in the completely unintended direction. This can be a very big problem in combat because it is obviously much more fast paced than trying to hit some barrels. Say you swing the camera around to see how many enemies there are attacking you and you have your camera locked on in one direction, press attack and then your character swings in the entirely opposite direction. It's simply obnoxious. To add to that, the combat really is just button mashing the same button over and over with very little sense of timing or rhythm. It is certainly not revolutionary but maybe if you want something with no learning curve you'll find some satisfaction in it. The user interface is nothing short of obnoxious. The menu and the inventory are an absolute pain to use with PC. First, they selected some arbitrary keys to use for simple commands like drop which feel entirely unnatural and take some serious getting used to--why they couldn't just go with some standard techniques like right click to drop or click+shift to drop I do not understand. The inventory system is also an incredible pain to simply navigate. Equipping your weapons means going through 2 screens, first the generic pause screen, then the entire inventory screen, then the weapon screen and THEN you have to select primary weapon or secondary weapon. Why not put all the weapons on one screen, have you click one, then another--or maybe click it and then click primary or secondary? Even on consoles it makes no sense to do it that way. And if you want to change your magic spells? Go back and do it all over again. Then if you want to change your "moves," go back and do it one more time. A lot of people have spent countless on this game but I can only wonder how much of it they actually spent just fiddling through the menu.

Overall I found no real enjoyment playing this game. When I wasn't irritated with the interface and gameplay mechanics I simply found it boring.

The game lacks character facial animation. The story lacks deepness. The plot is a lot better in Dragon Age, Witcher, Gothic etc.
On the other hand we usually presume that the plot is awful if it is not as non-linear or colorful as in Witcher and so on. But that is not quite accurate. The thing is that the story in Reckoning is good. First of all, most of the caracters are swift speakers.

The thing is that the story in Reckoning is good. First of all, most of the caracters are swift speakers. They give you the whole topic in like 5 seconds. I do not spend much time on it! Secondly, you always have blue topic important for plot development, and you have other topics. You do not have to hear them all. Thirdly, the plot is logical, and that is what makes it quite interesting. No one complains about God of War's linearity and simple story development. Amalur is the same thing. There are other things to make you engaged. The key element is hard difficulty. For Kratos's sake, pick hard difficulty! There is no point in different strategies, crafting, alchemy, speachcraft if you do not feel difficulty of battles!
After that the game becomes an interesting action with a story. And by the way, of all of the modern RPG's Kingdoms of Amalur contains a huge portion of fun for thiefs and assassins. A brand unique branch of skills is at your service. You do not just take daggers instead of swors and axes in your hands. You actually become a different class to control. That is what amazed me. And two marvelous DLCs also speak in favour of this game. The only thing I did not like about the game is the console control over the craracter and navigation through the menus. But that is something you can live with.

Which is impressive. Also a lot of people will see the connection to EA and go zomg #@&@(*&# EA. Good news is that after this game I do believe that BHG will be able to do things on their own. They just needed EA for the release or it wouldn't have been released at all. Further product will be, as far as I have heard, released through their own company. Now for the game, everyone has their own opinion about this game and from what I see, what people get from this game is very diverse. The combat for this game is awesome, I've never had more fun fighting in a rpg before. Your ability to mix the classes really adds to the fun of this as well by having the ability to be a mage/rogue, a warrior/mage ... etc etc. Lots of different ways to mix your spec. Or you can just do a pure build if you want. I'm all finesse atm having a ton of fun setting up battles and planning how I'm going to do things. Now the graphics of the game to me are awesome, very bright and very colorful, so if you like that dark realistic Skyrim ( just using an example) look this won't be the game for you. I agree with some peoples statements that the toons graphics are a bit outdates, in BHGs defense this game has been in the works for quite awhile and the characters looks did get a bit behind in the times. This didn't really distract me that much from the actual fun I was having playing the game. Armor sets and gear...... there is tons, your character will look like a badass, almost from the moment you start the game. Blacksmithing to me is overpowered so if you prefer to use gear you find, I wouldn't recommend putting too much time into that.
I'll make this short as I realize this is getting long, if you like having fun, genuine fun playing a game, this is it, give it a chance to grow on you and you will love it. The amount of fun I have, easily over shadows any of the small shortcoming this game has. To be fair, I would love to give this game a 10, but..there is room for improvement as well and I'm sure this company will do that. So I will give it a 9, I would prefer 8 but the 9 will balance out some of the non constructive reviews on here.

The way the previews and yes, even some reviews, have given the impression it was a classic RPG aimed at adults, are not only misleading but downright dishonest! This is STRICTLY kiddies stuff. It would be overpriced at a fiver too so how it can justify a full price release I do not know. The graphics are very, very poor and to say they are console graphics, like many reviews have come out and said, are an insult to the latest consoles. You could maybe say that if your console is a Sega Megadrive I suppose! With the likes of Skyrim around, this should have been scrapped as soon as the publishers got a glimpse at the Skyrim gameplay footage. If you are looking for a third person action RPG in this type of mould, The Witcher does everything this tries to do in a much more adult, entertaining and deeper way. Divinity 2 is also a much better bet. I feel extremely misled by the previews for this game that included interviews with the developers (who must have all been on LSD or similar hallucinogenics) that had me expecting something special. One of the biggest let downs of recent years. Very, very disappointing. Expand

I'll start this review by saying that i played the game on hard and finished both the main game & the legend of dead kel dlc and it took me approximately 110hrs.

At first when i tried the demo i really wasn't impressed at all by the graphics, they looked somewhat low res and reminded me a lot of wow and to make matters worse there was a lot of textures and object pop ins in the distance, all of which is still intact in the full game, but the second i tried the combat i was hooked and purchased the game. The combat in this game really reminds me of Darksiders, which i thoroughly enjoyed btw, its fast, fluid and really intuitive, with a set of great skills for each destinies.
I played the game from start to finish as a finesse character and everything from sneaking behind enemies with a set of daggers to assassinate them or turning myself invisible while lock-picking a treasure chest in a room full of guards was well implemented and enjoyable.

The more i played with the game the more i began to get engrossed in it and then something strange happened, i started to love the graphics.
The art department really did a great job of creating all the different environments and although the pop ins were still present i just found everything so beautiful and i felt like i was part of the world.
Almost forgot to mention that the monster design is really great as well, but i guess you can't go wrong with McFarlane.

Now although there is a great deal of good thing with this game, including the visuals, the music which btw is awesome, the different crafting system, the combat, the phat loot and the destiny system, which lets you put points in any of the three class templates, there are also some bad points and this is why i can't give the game more than a 7 out of 10.

I don't know maybe its because there's so many quests in the game or the fact that the faction ones were really great but it makes the main story line kinda boring and really forgettable, in fact pretty much all characters are forgettable and you never really find yourself attached to one in particular.

The combat may be great but after a while the enemies you fight really get boring and predictable and never really put up much of a challenge at all since at higher lvl they just are tougher but still have the same pattern.
I played the game on hard and except for one boss fight in particular, which was part of the first faction quest line, i never really feared for my life.

Now with so many quest and lots of areas to explore you'd think the dev would have thought about giving us an high enough lvl cap but unfortunately at lvl 40 this is where it stops and if you're like me and do all the quest you'll reach it way before the end of the game which for me was kinda a big letdown.
In my opinion they should really have slowed the exp gain in the 30th lvls.

Now where this started getting boring for me is because i'm not the type of person that will create multiple characters, when i play a game ill stick to one and it'll be my experience with that game, anyway Reckoning lets you respect every points so you never really need to create another character unless you wish to try another race, so when i bought the legend of dead kel dlc i was already lvl 40 and had all this uber gear which i crafted and now i started slaying my way across the dlc again without fear for my life, so as you can guess it was kinda boring so i just removed all my awesome stuff and just equipped anything i'd find on the island thinking there would be more of a challenge, boy was i wrong i could still kill everything with ease and the boss took me less than 1 minute to kill, i had to stop attacking because the music playing was pretty epic and i wanted to hear it all.

So although i had a great time with Reckoning, there was a couple of things that really bothered me, like the fact there's still no patch in sight even though they already released 3 dlc.

Anyway i'd still recommend it for anyone looking for a good action rpg, although don't be ready for a challenge or you'll disappointed.

In the combat all it comes down to is a series of special moves you learn that easily gain you victory against anyone that tries to kill you without the slightest challenge. If they were attempting to make an RPG into an action game they failed horribly because there isn't enough variation or excitement in fighting enemies - all you do is line them up and when they get in range execute the same ability, roll away, rinse and repeat until you win. The crafting system is something to be proud of but sometimes finding the materials you need is like pulling teeth and you end up finding items much better than you yourself can craft - although some can be broken down to make better ones. The backdrop and scenery of the game creates an immersive atmosphere but the game mechanics undermine it by not allowing a free-look camera and constantly introducing wave after wave of enemies in the style of an MMORPG, forcing you to carve through enemies any time you want to make progress. The basic plot of the game is okay but the premise of your character (oh noes I've lost my memory) kind of deal feels so old that I wish somebody would design a game where you don't have Amnesia and are a powerful demigod-like being that you can name. Recognizable voice actors are aplenty in this game and makes me suspect that the creators spent top dollar getting them, Mr. Salvatore, and other faces of the industry and left the rest of the game out to rot. By having Canderous Ordo as one of the main characters EA scored some points but overall the game doesn't really achieve anything significant in any facet of the game-play experience - it feels bland, boring, and most of all easy. I'll start off by saying that gamers that demand challenge will be disappointed. Content is quickly outlevelled and gear so generously given and easy to make, it destroys any opportunity for challenge. Combat is fun, but again.. not for the challenge of it. The storyline is average at best. I do think that the game has merits and potential. The storyline is average at best. I do think that the game has merits and potential. Anyone wanting to be the hero of the day, will likely enjoy the game as it's extremely difficult to fail in any aspect. Fateshifting is extremely OP, it's the ultimate "Win" button and should for the games sake be changed or much more limited. Blacksmithing should be toned down a lot. AI for monsters/villains should be cranked up Alot and in combat you shouldn't be able to mash a single button and destroy everything. Graphics are fine, the basic premise of gameplay is good. There is about 55-75 hrs. of content for players. The freedom of Character development is by far the best thing about the game to me. Want a warrior/ m-u ? or any combination of rogue, magic user or warrior? KoA provides not only for the development but the gearing as well. I think many of the reviews are far to harsh and some would give you the impression that this game is equivalent to an offering by atari 2600. That is certainly not the case. The absolute biggest knock to the game is a lack of challenge for any experienced gamer. Expand

For those of you who don't know, this was meant to be an MMO but was cut down to a single player game - and the feel is evident. It feels exactly like that - not strong enough on the single player elements. Everything was too light and made too easy to digest, as is typical of MMO's. The multiclassing was a nice attempt, and the whole "Fateweaving" thing was an interesting idea, just horribly implemented. Obviously just another thing written in to give you an "adrenaline super kill" mode like all games are using nowadays. Expand

It's just not possible to trust the professional critics anymore. There is no way this game deserves the high ratings its getting from the pros. Outdated graphics, boring story, boring quests. And the awesome combat that everyone seems to rave about? Just a click attack until everything is dead. Rinse and repeat for every damn mob. Save your money, or wait until its for sale for $10.

I'm 40+ hours in the game, with almost a hundred quests completed and didn't found a broken quest (be aware that there are some repeatable tasks that are mistaken as broken quests.) There were some glitches with the camera though, but this is one of the most polished RPG I've ever played (almost JRPG level.) The main problem I have with this game is the main story (no pun intended.) It's really boring, but as I'm a completionist, I dedicate 95% of my gaming time to do side and faction quests, this is not a big deal for me.

    Pros:
+ Very big, almost open, world
+ Fighting system is FUN and require good reflexes along with good stats and gear
+ Varied sidequests (but some fetch quests)
+ Lots of lore and spoken dialog with a larger cast than any Elder Scrolls game
    + Bug free
    + Addictive

    Cons
    - Main story is very boring
    - Camera (specially during battles)
    - Simplified RPG system (no level on enemies p. example.)
    - Not as immersive as Skyrim

The places you go are connected by paths so it's like leaving 1box for another. This game should really be played with a gamepad as it is much easier. Although, when I first played the demo, it didn´t really make me want to buy the full game (Steam only - Origin sucks!), after some critics I read, I figured out, that I still had to give it a try. And I don´t regret it by far.

The charakter creation is quite sweet and the options for different builds during the game are awesome. For those (like me) who seem to fail-build all the time, there is an option (each time you level up) to reset all your points. Thanks for that!

The Story is quite interesting and some changes during the game hit me like a sledgehammer.
Most of the hundreds of side-quests have their own little story, they never felt like "been there, done that".

The Graphics look ravishing... and somehow remind me a bit of WoW. However, if WoW had those wonderful new look, I´d play in Azeroth more often ;-).
It´s comic style, you have to like it (or you do not - nothing in between).

Sound effects are descent and the music score ist truly epic. Sometimes I just sit in front of my Asus and listen to the game. At the loading screen, it almost sounds like a mixture of "Batman begins" and the "WoW-Theme". Great!

Controls are easy to learn (and not hard to master). If you let tutorial advices help you, you´ll not have any problems.

I did not finish the game yet, but my Steam says sth. about 80+ hours of play. So I might reach the finale soon. And I really am looking forward to it. Not because the game is boring, but because I really got into the story and I want to see, how it ends (if it does).

So, if you´re looking for sth. after having "finished" Skyrim, and if you like comic style, then you should really buy Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
To me it´s one of the Top 5 in 2012 even if this year hasn´t even reached the half of it.

Is there sth. negative about it? Well, to me there isn´t, yet. Maybe the ending will disappoint me, but that is yet to see....

PROS: + Solid RPG Combat: A refreshing change from turn-based or first person RPG combat. It's fun most of the time but one couldn't feel that even Fable has better combat mechanics and response even though its much more simplistic. God of War and console action fans would love it but for the rest of us: its good but not something to be addicted to. +Massive World + LOTS to do: IF you can bear with the boring main plot and side quests. There's literally over 150 hours of stuff to do. I am impressed by that. No other game apart from Elder Scrolls and recent Fallout games have provided me with so much RPG goodness. But its all pretty uninteresting and not to mention, its repetitive. +Stealth Combat: Is a silent pleasure (pun not intended). Stealth play is almost as good as Skyrim and makes you feel like an absolute badass when the stealth kill animation plays on an unsuspecting enemy. CONS:
    - Inventory Design and Controls: Why cant you view the Journal and Map at the same time, or at least, flip between them? Why is the UI feel like a game made in the early 2000's instead of an intelligent modern age RPG UI? Why do the controls on PC feel so unresponsive at times in combat and you feel like there's an invisible force
    - Auto-lock on Target **** WHY??? Why cant you do a Fable and have CROSSHAIRS to SHOOT the targets that YOU want to kill? Why is there no INDICATOR for your target at all in melee or range combat? While does the computer choose the target for you depending on where your character stands?
    - Worst RPG dialogue interaction EVER: The characters have LIMITED+ lamest and over exaggerated facial expressions with out of sync dialogue coupled with an overdose of speech done by mediocre voice actors. You'll be skipping 90% of the dialogue and read the subtitles most of the time just because its so damn BORING! They attempt to make it like a Mass Effect dialogue interaction but fails miserably in the process (so bad that I am facepalming and **** at the interactions rather than enjoying them).
    - Repetitive Quests and World: Sure the world is HUGE (our tip of the hat to 38 and Big Huge Games) but why waste it on generic fetch-quests and kill quests (which is pretty much the entire game)? I can play Torchlight or Diablo if I want those but this is a SP RPG IP that aims to compete with Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age! Quantity does NOT equal quality. Having a dozen quests that basically go the same way isn't extending the game's life, its killing it. I lot interest after bearing with the game for 32 hours (and from hardcore fans, you can squeeze 150~200 hours out of this title) and basically preferred studying anatomy than doing the same repetitive **** for the 15th time and wasting my life. -Graphics: Oh God, this is a AAA 2012 game? It looks like a Fable clone from 2005. Hell, even Fable: TLC might have more charming locales. The background design for this game is copy and paste, cheap generic old school RPG stuff and the graphics are basically Fable One with dynamic shadows, better textures and higher use of HDR lighting + post-processing. (And yet, apparently on consoles, it have FPS issues!)

Bugs/Glitches Level: MODERATE (Update: Current patches have NOT address the major issues)

VERDICT: Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning is a heavily flawed RPG which has giant potential let down by some very poor design choices. It feels like a high end indie title designed as an attempt at an AAA IP to rival the major RPG juggernaut franchises out there but ultimately ends up a poor man's version of Fable. Had the game been produced with a better graphics engine, UI and improved interaction as well as quest design, Reckoning would've been a strong contender for GOTY. Sadly, this is the most disappointing AAA RPG I have played in a long time since Borderlands. Worth a look but dont expect anything fancy. BETTER THAN: Borderlands

WORSE THAN: All the of Fable games. Yes, even Fable III.

Though it doesn't hold the holy grail for any epic RPGs, it held my attention for a while, clocking in at almost 40 hours (more than I can say for Skyrim). A problem noted though, is that most of the side quests didn't feel fleshed out enough. Some of the backstory is covered through these side quests, and I wish that more of the lore was introduced as I progressed. The skill trees are smartly executed, though somewhat lacking in customization in the end run. The ability to change your 'Fate' allows for a lot of experimentation in picking your favorite class, or creating one all on your own by interchanging points between multiple ones. But, leaving with a final con, I wish more weapons and creatures were introduced; it's a decent amount of diversity for an RPG, but after seeing the same enemies over and over, while using the same weapons, just upgraded, it gets tiresome. All in all though, everything leaves you satisfied if you're open to this game style; it's not Skyrim, and neither is it the Witcher, rather, it reintroduces a colorful new world with old homages to classic fantasy, while reinventing some cliches as well. I hope to see this world expanded, either with Copernicus, or with a sequel all on its own. Expand

Character classes are the three standard archetypes - fighter, rogue, mage, and any combination of the three you desire. Every time you level up, you place a skill point in one of these three trees. You can mix and match, but doing so often necessitates putting skill points into passive bonuses or active skills you will never benefit from. The story is good and the combat plays out like God of War in many ways. There's an assortment of weapons to choose from, each with ups and downs. One of the best features of Kingdoms of Amalur is the ability to respec almost at will and reallocate your skill points as you desire. Have you been playing as a mage and just took a bunch of sidequests that would be a lot easier as a rogue? No problem. Just respec. In fact, the game encourages you to respec early and often. One reason for this is because there is so much content in the game that it would quickly become boring playing through as one character class. Another reason is because the three class trees are VERY limited. There are too few active skills. I never thought I'd say this about a game, but there is too much content considering how quickly it takes to max one of the class trees. The up side to this is again, your ability to retool your character at any time throughout the game. This helps what would easily be a stale experience remain fresh, but even this system has its limits. I highly recommend this game to RPG fans. There's simply a staggering amount of content here even if the quest types start to repeat. Just wait for a price drop first. Expand

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning delivers what it promises, engaging story, fluid combat system, in depth crafting system. Downsides to KoA are to many side quests not enough main story, the game itself is on the easy side and the camera restrictions are beyond annoying but overall well worth the price if you are a RPG fan

I don't wanna talk about character models so much cuz they suck, the environment is OK nothing breathtaking and seems kinda outdated because it seems it should have been made for the year 2006 or something like that. Also the thing that annoys me is that i like the fact that the wold is HUGE but there is so little to do other than just plain grinding mobs like in an mmo that i actually haven't even been able to continue playing on daly basis because i know what awaits me for the next 2 hours ingame and really i don't wanna waste so much time for grinding, if i wanna play an mmo I'll do that and chat ingame with my buddy's while we grind. Also this being an RPG i think it lacks companions that follow you around. Also the races in this game are so dam boring that it hurt my brain and they look terrible that it hurt my eyes and the voice actin is so bad that it hurt my ears so all in all this should have been another stupid ass brainless grind fest mmo and not some single player RPG
So ye its OK at best id suggest you don't waste time on it because you won't get back that time you spend on it, its sad really i really hoped it would be enjoyable i didn't even care about the graphics when i first saw some gameplay footage, oh well only combat will not make a good RPG the story is kinda more important here :D

If you're on the fence about buying this game, there is conveniently a demo you can get on all platforms, which gives you a nice taste of what to expect in the full game. Graphics- While I like the art direction used in this game (slightly cartoony similar to WoW) they have used plenty on bright colours but the attention to detail is not there as you might find in games such as The Witcher 2 and Skyrim etc.
Camera features - lacks ability to zoom in and out of character.
Controls- good basic controls but lacks ability to have key modifiers to use alt 1, alt 1 etc Combat- the best combat I have experienced so far but encounters are fairly easy. I would like to see more encounters where you are required to use several different tactics to defeat mob/boss.
Navigation- They claim to be open world but its pretty much like the Final Fantasy 10 maps. With long winding tunnels/paths. They need to implement a jump button and allow jumping up and down paths to give a feel of a true open world. They have jumped points but its not enough for me.
Monsters- When they die they die. No respawn. Which leads to an empty lifeless world. The game would benefit from respawns. While I think no game should impose grinding as an option its always nice (such as FF7).

The role-playing element is where it falls down a little bit, I just simply couldn't bring myself to care about the characters or the story. Though, the exploration side of things more then made up for it.

As you progress through the game you'll come across varied landscapes and monster's that relate back to the Fae and their 4 courts, aptly named after the four season. The combat is probably the game's strongest and for me weakest point. While fun and fluid, it suffers from a flaw that I can't get past, in the game you're able to activate an ability which essentially slows time and increase's damage output which make's hard boss fights incredibly easy, while the quick time event at the end is satisfying it just doesn't hold a challenge. Sure I could bump the difficulty however that make's the game a struggle the whole way through.

The other issue that I had was the occasionally the camera would point either at the ground, or assume that you have a form of X-ray vision and show you a cliff face or some other solid surface that can't be seen through. I have only even encountered this as a hindrance when I was in an arena like area where you are in close quarters surrounded on all sides, I can understand how some people could consider this a game breaking occurrence. Overall, if you enjoyed Fable or Skyrim then chance's are you will thoroughly enjoy this game as long as you can get past the minor annoyances.

The character look unique and special, but the lip-syncing could be better and the draw distance is not great. I haven't encountered any major graphical glitches yet, and the game runs smoothly.
The dialogue is hit and miss; one type is a tedious list where everyone seems to have the same general options where they will offer vague, similar opinions on a topic plus maybe one additional character-specific topic that will lead you to a quest. The other is a mass-effect choice style where you can choose how you respond to a character (usually an important character). You also get a Fallout-style persuasion option which shows you the chance of success based on your persuasion skill. For main characters, dialogue is interesting and cool, but when you're just exploring, it doesn't do as good a very good job of immersing you but rather bores you, and while the developers could've found a more entertaining way of putting information across, this still does the job; you'll know what you need to know if you want to know it. Additionally, the choices you make have very minor effects and have no impact on the storyline whatsoever. This is fine as the game never claimed to contain major moral choices, but it's something to note if you're planning to get the game.
Due to its third person perspective, Reckoning isn't as accessible as first-person games like Skyrim. It's open-world, but it still has clear boundaries that you cannot cross. It's like A LOT of linear, confined areas have been put next to each other to create a pretty big open world, which works. The interesting thing about Kingdoms of Amalur is that it manages to take bits and bobs from other major RPGs, such as the Dragon Age skill tree, Elder Scrolls looting, Mass Effect dialogue, etc. but still remains original in its own way. You likely won't find something and marvel at its originality, but when you look at the game as a whole, it's easy to see that the developers have taken the best bits out of other games, put them all together and added the element that many of them were somewhat lacking in, game-play, and made a game that is perhaps more complete than any other fantasy RPG on the market.
The game-play, as I'm sure you will have heard is very good. The combat feels fluid, fun and varied, with an array of weapons and spells to use. For the most part, it doesn't feel too challenging at the Normal setting, but there are certain creatures that will certainly pose a threat. The game offers a real-time XP/Level-up system, rewarding players for killing creatures as soon as they do so, which is good. The level-up system is reminiscent of Dragon Age's, where you pick a perk every time you level up and choose which skill from one of the three skill trees (Might, Finesse and Sorcery, or basically, Warrior, Bowman and Mage) to invest points into. Arguably the best thing about Amalur's level-up system is the fact that it never locks you into a certain path. If you invested all your points into Sorcery but never use staffs, that's fine. There's nothing stopping you from playing the game that way. Matching your playing style to your point investment definitely helps, but is never required.
The inventory system is inferior to pretty much every other modern RPG. It's basically a list, going into another list etc. then you get to what you like. Luckily, you can equip any weapon to a Primary or Secondary weapon and can switch between them at the press of a button at any time during game-play, (so you can have a sword as your primary and another sword as your secondary, or a sword and a bow/staff and so on) which is good, but if you want to remap one of your weapon slots, you have to go through several tiers of lists. There is a hotkey system for spells, a dial for potions and two slots for weapons but ultimately this falls flat compared to Skyrim's all-encompassing favourite system which allows you to just have what you want in one, easy-to-access list.
One gripe I have with Reckoning is that it just dumps tons of information onto you as if it was meaningless. The implication of doing something can be as little as a tick on the quest screen. You don't feel like you're doing what you're doing for a reason but rather to just complete the quest. You'll find a town, meet some that give you a quest each, go do their quests (which will likely be generic and boring), turn them in, get your reward and be done. The faction and main story quests are much more fun, but the majority of the side quests aren't.
Overall, Reckoning is fun to play, and that's what matters. The RPG elements work fine, the world is vast and packed with content, and the combat doesn't feel laborious or monotonous, but fun and varied; his game is definitely worth playing if you're an RPG fan.

However, the game is too big for it's own good. The action and quests become repetitive after a while, and there are few memorable quests. I don't care about the nth side quest. All the side quest dialogue makes me also lose the attention for the main story line. There could also be better methods for interrupting, blocking or avoiding attacks, and I feel like I just end up clicking the left mouse button continuously while fighting. This is the first game in years that I have uninstalled without completing just because I couldn't bring myself to play it anymore. The combat is awful, I played a warrior with a hammer weapon to about the point when I filled the blacksmithing skill (which turned out worthless since materials for crafting are random drop apart from the extremely few and far between shops that sell only the most basic materials). The combat is ripped right out of God of War, literally, it's the exact same, right down to random meaningless sheep enemies being able to stagger and interrupt the attacks of my character, who wields a weapon larger than the enemies themselves. The combat difficulty is one of two things, way too easy, or close to impossible (enemies with unblockable, undodgable homing spells that will follow you endlessly and kill you in 1-2 hits, even if the enemy dies as they are following you).

The environments look nice, but you can't really explore them at all, there are tons of invisible walls and most dungeons are "magically locked" unless you're on a certain quest. The story is, well, I literally just stopped playing an uninstalled it less than five minutes ago and I can barely remember the point of the story. It was boring and unimaginative, and did not drag me in at all.

I've never gone from being amazed and happy about my purchase, and looking forward to a FUN game to being completely and utterly disappointed in such a short time before. I could go on and on but it isn't worth it, I couldn't care less about the future of this game at all. It has been so long since I played a game that was so boring I considered it a chore to even try to finish it I forgot what it was like.

Cons: the game is highly "consolified": you can't jump anywhere except predetermined jump points, you can't freely aim with your bow or spells (only at locked on targets), and the menu is annoying and clearly optimized more for consoles rather than PCs. It seems you can't even change the things in your quickbar. The character creation capabilities are pretty disappointing for a game released in 2012.

KoA has an interesting story, factions and side quests. There is much to do here and most of it is fun. The combat is fun, and even after 30 hours plus game time, hasn't become boring. Some have complained about the 'cartoonish / outdated' graphics, but after playing for a while, I found that the art style seems to fit in the grand scheme of the game. Voice acting is quite well done, but nothing really special. What seems to be missing in the game world is the thrill of exploration. As you travel to an undiscovered location marked on your map by a quest giver, there is no feeling of adventure, and you just want to get to your destination as quickly as possible to 'get on with it'. It's more of a mechanical process as you run towards your quest, pause to fight the enemies that pop in, and then move along. The game, in my opinion is best enjoyed, by doing a bit of the main story quests, some side quests to help you level up, and some faction quest lines, rinse repeat. The tasks are for those that just really need to complete everything, but are nothing more than fetch quests and they really feel boring. The things that I feel 38 Studios / Big Huge Games got right are the loot system and the fact that you won't have to travel to 20 different vendors to sell it all. Weapons also degrade to the point of breaking if you don't keep them maintained. The final game is far better than the demo, and it deserves a look if you are a fan of the genre. The game is good enough to make me want to continue until I complete the main quest line as well as the factions. I'll take some side quests along the way as well. As for the task type of quests that I've taken from various NPCs; those will most likely go unfinished. Expand
