Underrated gem, I really wished this game have had more success. Great action combat (as great as non-soulslikes goes) and a cliche but good plot. Loved it back in the day!

Combat is thrilling and there are many different combos. There are many enemies to fight and it is not just spamming.

Special abilities are amazing. You feel like a invincible warrior.

You can craft your own weapons and armor. You can make overpowered stuff and break the game.

Max level is 40 and this is not enough.

We run everywhere. There should've been horse.

This is the second time I've played KoA: Reckoning, but this time I managed to finish it. I've decided to give this game the rating of 8, because it isn't such a bad game and also, I respect the work of the developers, even if it wasn't put enough effort in the making of it.

The story of the game is not simple, but not complex either. The beginning of the game is very promising, because there is a lot mistery there... You don't know who you are, you don't know what you will do and most importantly, you don't even know who you have been, because it seems that you have been revived by some gnomish invention. The number of the main quests is very small, compared with the side quests and tasks you will have during gameplay. The game is huge, but not because of the main quests, but the side quests which are a lot, around (250-300).
The graphic of the game is beautiful, of course, but it isn't realistic. There is kinda animated and is very similar to that of World of Warcraft. The special effects are good too.
The customization of the character is detailed enough and the best thing is the diversity of the destinies and fates you can choose of. You can just be focused on might, finesse or sorcery, or you can combine all of this skill trees, even being a jack of all trades type of person. Moreover, after some important steps or milestones of the game, you unlock a new fate and that fates gives you other benefits. The lore of the game is immense and you can find different scattered lorestones during the world and if you can find all of some set, you receive another benefits.
There are some things I didn't like of this game too, unfortunately. First, the slience of the protagonist, made the dialogs boring after a while. I would have wanted that the bosses to be a little more difficult, because overall, the game is very easy. The combat is easy too, that's why it got boring for me, personally, after a while.
These being said, the game is not bad, and definitely should be played, especially by the RPG lovers. There are some missing parts of the game, but the lack of these doesn't make the game bad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ken Rolston, (Morrowind, Oblivion) was one of the designers for this game, so it comes as no surprise that KOAR (Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning) is good; very good. It plays a little like Fable and The Elder Scrolls, but also has its own flavor and flare. Here is my list of Pros and Cons...

    PROS:

    Very detailed world, and large.
    Nice graphics for 2012.
Great musical scores. Fits very well.
Decent character creation; Male & Female.
Four Races: 2 Human, 2 Elf.
3 main classes; Warrior, Mage and Rogue.
Classes can be mixed to make unique classes.
Fateweavers can reset your destiny at anytime.
Can pick gods and goddesses to worship.
Great Main Quest. Unique & intriguing.
Tons of side quests. Not boring or repetitive.
Thousands of characters to talk too.
100+ hrs can be dumped into the MQ alone.
Crafting. This is one of the best parts. GREAT!
DLC adds new land, quests, a keep, & marriage.
NPCS are voiced and it was done very well.
One of the most bug free games I've ever played.

    CONS:

Little to no weather effects. Takes away realism.
Despite all the taverns, you can't order food or drink.
There's no alignments. It's like TES IV: Oblivion.
A level cap increase should have been added.
Quest items sometimes get stuck in inventory.
Sprinting forever? A fatigue meter was needed.
Jumping from 10 story cliffs unhurt? Very odd.

    -----

That's about it. KOAR is a hugely underrated game and was well put together. 8/10.

I was expecting something else looking at title and cover, but I was pleasantly surprised. I like dark hard games, however even though it's easy and bright (atmosphere) game it's quite pleasant. Nothing amazing, but still really well done. The combat is great when you learn how to combo normal hits with your abilities so you get a chain of attacks that obliterates everything on your path.

The story is alright, The world is so beautiful and colorful. The gameplay is really nice you have some good solid combat with lots of moves and abilitys and you wont get bored anytime soon. Some people complain about the voice acting but its not that bad to be honest. Its a lot better than the games we are getting today like the trash DA:Inquisition and such.

Don't listen to everyone telling you that this is bad game because its not and its probably very cheap now. Pick it up and give it a chance. Don't give up after a few hours because the game is very big and it will only get better.

Reckoning is rather like a single-player MMO, if that makes any sense. Looting, crafting and leveling are the primary attractions. There is a ton of loot; putting points into the “detect hidden” skill reveals secret rooms and passageways that have even more loot. You'll want to loot as much as you can, even armor sets that you won't use – put points into blacksmithing, disassemble the armor and weapons you don't want to get the parts, and craft something truly epic. Leveling up provides new abilities, new special moves for weapons. At the end of each leveling session, you get to choose a “Fate Card” with special bonuses. Fate Cards are not class-specific, meaning you can use them to create a warrior mage who equips heavy armor, or an archer can wield heavy weapons, or a thief / rogue who also has some magic. There are dozens of hybrid “Fate Cards.” And if you're not happy with how your build has turned out, visit a Fateweaver to “Remix your Fate” and reset your build so you can level up again with your existing points.

The world is huge. There are a lot of places to explore with side-missions hidden everywhere. The graphics are 2012 era DirectX 9: Colorful, bright, and occasionally low-res. The general comic-book style of the artwork hides some graphical shortcomings. And on the plus side, if you have a less-than-stellar gaming PC, the game will probably run just fine. (Back in the day, I ran it on a 1GB Radeon 6670 without issues). The soundtrack by Grant Kirkhope catches the ambiance nicely. The voice acting is generally good (though your hero is silent, like in Dragon Age Origins).

Not everything is excellent, unfortunately. Combat flows well, encouraging the use of different moves. Despite the many different skills and abilities at my disposal, once I found a way to dispose of mobs, I just stuck to that, and never really tried to change up my attacks. I won't say combat is easy – if you go into an area under-leveled, you'll die fast (even with potions). But once you're comfortable in the system, combat becomes just another chore. Fetch quests are repetitive. All exploration is done on foot – no horses. The dungeons are NOT copy / pasted; there's a lot of variety here. But the missions that use the dungeon and cave levels tend to follow similar patterns. If you try to do a completionist run of Reckoning, you'll need a titanic level of patience and dedication. Inventory management, frankly, stinks. Oh, and jumping. You can't jump, except at prescribed places (“press F to jump”).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a great game if you love messing about in an open world while worrying about plot later. If you're looking for a go-anywhere, do-anything adventure (with the freedom to jump wherever you want), you'll probably be happier with Skyrim. Or online with friends in Guild Wars 2. Sometimes, though, a solitary, easy grind for loot is exactly what you want - and exactly what Reckoning provides.

    On DLC:
The Weapons and Armor DLC provides three complete weapons sets that are accessible at the start of the game. While great to have, the things you craft will quickly surpass them in quality and effectiveness.

The Teeth of Naros and The Legend of Dead Kel are both large additions to an already massive game. Each provides a new campaign and entirely new areas to explore. Naros in particular is a great piece of DLC. Both have a lot of content in an industry where content-laden DLC are rare. Definitely worth it to get both.

    Notes:
An EA account is NOT required. Though the game asks for an EA login on startup, you can simply click the X in the corner to skip the login. The game will play and save normally.

The company that developed Reckoning, 38 Studios, went bankrupt in 2013. The only support for the game is what you will find when trawling the forums.

Controls and interface are a bit consolized so a good gamepad is recommended, but then it just feels so smooth and fluid. With the exception of Souls series, I don't remember having so much fun with combat and tight fighting mechanics in RPG anywhere else, these battles were just brutal. I played as a mage and I must admit that after reaching certain level of higher power spells like meteor shower, I have never seen such overpowered mage ever in my life. My char was just a total magic death machine. The world is huge and varied, there are tons and tons of quests and side quests, which is arguably not the best thing about this title, but the main story is pretty good and the primary thing is that progressing your character is fun and the combat is just pure bliss. It took me about 100 hours to finish it, so just about right amount to call it a big solid RPG and even years after finishing it, I'm still remembering memories of playing it very dearly, listening to the soundtrack played by Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Reckoning mode (slow motion + extra cool stuff) also works like a charm. This is, btw, the first game in which I have enjoyed playing a mage.
I'm not that far in the game, so I can't tell you much about the story yet. The hook, however, seems pretty awesome. It's already clear to me that the main story is just a story, and you have many sidequests, which are all pretty interesting.
If you're really into roleplaying, as I am, you also have some options, although your choices don't affect the world as much as I would have liked. You can, however, choose different reactions to peoples' conversations and requests. The roleplaying aspect is a bit underdeveloped in this game.
Thus, this is a great game if you don't expect the wrong things from it. Don't expect it to be like Dragon Age or the Witcher, where all your choices matter greatly. You also shouldn't expect it to be realistic (it's the first RPG in which I used bloom, just to make it feel even more fantasy-like). You should expect a great adventure/action game with a really great combat system instead.

With this state i can beat most of boss without a single potion.

I play this game mainly with Joystick and keyboard for quicksave and quickload. The joystick one can only do 4 skill due lack of skill slot and u need re-allocate the slot everytime u need to change.

i give 10 for the awesome fight system and flexibility

Played about 20 hours of it so far and I believe it deserves a solid 8.2ish out of ten. Great game, alot of options for your character, gameplay is fun as muck and never before have I come across Chakrams in an action rpg such as this before. They are fun to play around with and this game is worth catching on steam sale for sure!

The only con I can really think of is the lacking story.

To start of with the gameplay was some of the most invigorating i have seen in a western RPG. with the game being an action RPG you will spend most of your time in combat witch is by far better than most other western RPG title, more comparable to combat in God of War or Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Amalur's combat is heavily based on dodging parrying and attacking rather than preplanned elaborate tactics, this style of combat serves and fits well in this type of game. to go along with the game play the UI is very well design, the HUD is simple yet solid and the menu catagorizes all your gear and items so well its never hard to find what you want. the RPG elements that support the game are impressive as well. being able to blend the three styles of combat Might(warrior) Finess(rouge) Sorcery(mage) in anyway you want is great i found my self preffering the rouge mage build and a combination of all three. there is also crafting but im never much for crafting in any game it so i wont judge it. navigating the world is all simple and sastifying a massive map filled with many areas strung together with narrow interconneting pathways makes navigation easy and not at all overwhelming to any player. all together the gamplay package with this game is one that borrows alot from good examples and excutes them just as well
the game world its self is quite pretty i found it seems like it started as a very bright and colorful MMO but stopped half way to be a single Player RPG. the art direction is one i really like especially with many games having such bland color pallets its nice to see a game like viva pinata thats not afraid to use colors thats are browns and greys. the creatures in the world arent very original in though or idea but have their personality in execution (except wolves but come on they're wolves you can only make them look so different). also the game is riddled with lore. that can be found in many forms such as books NPCs and Lorestones(stones that when activated play an audio file related to the background story of the world) are scattered throughout the world. the game world is one that i find to be immersive and interesting.
lastly the story which is very possible the hardest thing to review. some may find it boring while other may find it entertaining. it all falls heavily on what you like in a story. for example many people find the witcher to have a great story where i find it to be a whatever story but its all opinion. So in my opinion the story to Amalur is good. any one who knows of Joseph Campbell knows what to expect from any story that involves a hero's journey there is no originality here in plot devices and what not just like any other hero story but the circumstances and setting around it supports it enough and makes it stand out in my memory. to give a quick no-spoilers summary: having being brought back from the dead you discover that you are no longer bound by the weaves of fate the determine the fate of the world and all who inhabit it. and since you are the only one free to choose your own destiny its up to you to save the world. nothing new here same as many hero stories, but i believe that the fateless one angle is worked pretty well.
all in all Amalur is a great game and should be at least tried by any RPG fan. I was so infactuated with this game i actually bought it 3 times once on all the platforms it was released on eventually. and of course like every other game its has its faults but none take away from overall enjoyment i give it a solid 8/10 the game would earn a 9 from me if it didn't suffer from boring side quest syndrom(where all almost all the side quest are go here do that come back for hours on end) more varrying enemy types and a greater visual variety of armor sets(just about all armor of the same type looks exactly the same) just to name a few problems i had and guess a slightly better fast travel system to, if only to be picky at this point.

Why is this not rated higher here I can't say, except for the usual complaint "generic fantasy", boring side quests, no name characters etc. which IMO most if not all huge rpg's suffer from to some extent due to their sheer size. Anyway a very solid fun game worth a look. A damn shame there will likely never be a proper sequel which this game definitely deserves! Expand

Graphics: Similar to Fable. Sorta cartoony, but they nail the whole fantasy feel right on the head so I can't really knock them too much.
Combat: They went the God of War combat route, which is fairly uncommon for open world RPGs. It works very well and allows for the player to combine might, magic, and finesse moves to create some truly devastating attacks. The camera can go wonky sometimes, but it doesn't happen often enough for it to really hurt the gameplay.
Class System: Every RPG developer needs to take notes on how they've done the class system in this game. You have 3 skill trees (might, magic, finesse) and you put points into whichever ones you want when you level up. Depending on the total amount of points you put into each one determines which class you get as you level up. For example, if you go full on strength you'll eventually unlike a Knight or Berserker type class. Put some point into magic as well? You'll end up with a Battlemage, giving you bonuses to spell power, mana, and physical damage/resistance. Your class and skill allocation can also be changed at anytime for a menial amount of gold.
Crafting: The crafting is easy to pick up and adds more to the game. You have Alchemy, Blacksmith, and a type of Gem crafting. You can make armors, weapons, and gems to socket into them.
Story: The story is alright. There's enough there to keep you interested, but the real interesting stuff lies within the games hundred and hundreds of side-quests.
Factions: Various factions you can join; all of which provide you with unique armors and weapons throughout their quests and various boosts to your hero's abilities.
Gear and Loot: Needless to say the game has a ton of stuff to collect. It follows the generic color scheme to inform you of the items strength/value/rarity as well as having tons of collectible unique armor sets and weapons.
Length: For me, RPG's can go on forever. If the average guy wanted to know how much playing time they'd get out of it I would say easily around 30-40+ hours. If you complete the story, which by itself takes near 20 or so, and immerse yourself in the side-quests and characters then you'll have no trouble spending hours and hours here.
Lore: My God the lore. This game has more lore in one faction's side-quest line than some RPGs have in their entire story. Where Skyrim let down pretty much everyone on the lore front this game provides almost too much lore to handle.

If there's something I'm missing it's understandable simply because there's so much here. If you're a fan of RPGs than this is a must play. Without a doubt.

Played and finished KoA twice with both DLCs. Love this game! The combat is fluent and fun, the story is woven deep into the world they created and the class and item customisation is extensive!

The quest design is probably one of the only negatives I would say about the game, with too many fetch quests and talk to this person quests, feels too MMO-y. Otherwise, great game!

Story wise it was somewhat forgettable however the lackluster story will fade from mind as the loot starts to drop and you run around the world of Amalur like the god of reckoning killing things in ways that will put a smile on your face. Think murdering things with daggers is fun and lo and behold a legendary greatsword drops, just visit a fateweaver and spec into sword and go on a rampage. The combat in this game is so enjoyable it will overshadow all gripes. The loot is outstanding you feel the need to open everything just to see if you get something new to rip things apart with. The world is nice to look at don't expect realism you are in the fae lands the monsters are a riot to fight and there are about 30 different types with many sub types. I dont mind the cartoon type graphics, its a high fantasty game after all I love the funny personalities and the cool magic weapons, at last a magic weapon that really kicks butt! THE CHAKRAS! In some other games being a commited magic user was impossible, but in thIs game my character can really have fun just being a mage and im loving that. I am also looking forward to trying out the other builds in future replays. Im on my first playthrough and am managing most missions without problems and very few bugs, well none so far which is excellent imo. The story is ok but I do get side tracked easily by people I meet who need help and I really want to help them, their storues are interesting and fun. Would love some flirting or romance options but glad its not done badly as in skyrim, better no romance than what skyrim had to offer.
One thing that has really annoyed me about this game and many others too I might add is that although many mage armours have different names they all look the same, the only thing that cahnges is the stats. I am up to level 18 with about a weeks worth of playing, MANY many hours and I have only found about four different armour designs. Its a bit disappointing as I love the way I can see my character whenever I want too and I am able to change her hairstyle and colour and accessories etc. Love that, yaay! But I would love a much better range of armour styles. One of the best ever games for this was Neverwinter Nights 2. They had hundreds of different armours and styles, man what a game that was!!
Oh and another thing, Anders from Dragon Age, the mage? His voice is everywhere in this game and I am really tired of meeting people and hearing his voice, he must have done about a third of the voice acting jobs, he was even in the latest star wars game too, just becoming too familiar to me. I dont like that.
I think the crafting system is nice, I am enjoying using it. I love the skills system, easy and straightforward for me and I think the maps and map travel is lovely. I wish I had a unicorn to ride on though, hehe. I am still in honeymoon phase with this game as in enjoying it very very much and am hoping I continue to do so. Just edited my score as I think this game is more and 8 than a 9.

It doesn't require you to use special abilities to win fights but also doesn't make it seem like hack and slash is the easiest way to conquer this title. So far I have logged 26 hours into this game and I am still attached to the storyline and am still developing my play style. I play on Hard and I can honestly say that it is a challenge and the rewards are oh so glorious. The side quests are boring? They alter entire villages and quest lines? For example you can wipe out an entire village or just kill the boss. You can kill villagers as you please. And they stay dead. Simple minded MMO for solo? Maybe so, but at least the quests are better and more interesting then most MMO's and RPG's. Outdated graphics? Maybe so, but considering how it is generally open world with no load screens? Exception of course being when you enter a dungeon or house. The largest flaw I found was the camera but that's easy to fix, it's called a right joy stick. This game was advertised as your standard RPG level-up with side quests and with publisher 38 studios and their normal take on graphics I got exactly what I expected and more. Sorry to those who don't see it the same way, but before judging this RPG try playing others that this one is in competition with, WoW is a good one to start. The graphics/gameplay/combat/gear/enemies/musical score are right up there with the best. The combat alone makes this game stand out. SO much hate for a GEM of a game. Just do yourself a favor and look at the profiles of the people who gave it less than 5. For 9/10 of those people are skyrim fanboys or the like who came to this site JUST to hate on this game or all they give is bad reviews. There's a demo available, give this game a chance. It's great fun. The main story doesn't fare quite as well as the gameplay, mainly because of the flawed execution. There's a very small amount of cutscenes for a story this grand and as a result what could have been an awesome, epic tale feels much, much smaller. For example, at about 1/3 of the story the Fateless One (you), has to put together an army to defeat the evil Tuatha. But after doing tons of quests and gaining new allies, there's never a point where you actually get to see this massive army in all its glory. Ever. You talk about it, it comes up in plenty of conversations, but you never, ever see it. Aside from this main complaint however, KoAR is a truly engrossing game with tons of content. Even the DLC is very much worth picking up for what it adds to the game. Each expansion adds a new little continent that you can explore, a new story line for each, lots of new side quests, and the Dead Kel DLC even gives you your own castle to renovate, and then lets you play ruler over the surrounding lands. It's just a small meta-game, but it's very fun and quite addictive. As far as presentation, the game isn't very detailed, but this is one of the cases where the art design kind of made up for the lack of sharpness in the graphics, because there are truly some great looking and imaginative areas, but ofcourse they would have benefited from some extra polish. The sound effects and voice acting are good, if not great, but my main complaint with the sound is the music, which is very scarce and limited. Overall, this game and its DLC are worth buying for fans of RPGs and action games alike, thanks to the fast paced, arcadey combat, hundreds and hundreds of side quests and the hours and hours of pure, high fantasy entertainment on offer. It's just a shame that the developers shut down before they could make a sequel to fix some of this game's problems, because I truly believe that a second trip to Amalur that opens up more of the world and fixes what few issues this game had, could have easily achieved true greatness. 90 some hours into the game and I am loving it. The graphics aren't the greatest and there are few bugs here and there, but I'd rather play a game that has over 90 hours of game play and depth than a game with high graphics and no depth and short play time. Good side quests, faction quests, main storyline quests. Also has a great combat system and character customization as well.

Everything in the game is basically copied from other games. I don't consider this a terrible thing, as I easily recognized what to do. The game is somewhat easy on even highest difficulty. Once again, this is not such a terrible thing for a casual gamer. The camera is probably the biggest complaint I have. That and the UI/Inventory are clearly made for consoles. Now that the studio is closed down, if you are considering purchasing, you should Google the game breaking bugs as there will be no patch. Once again if you're a casual gamer that enjoys over the top action and rpg elements this game can be fun. If you're looking for a Skyrim/Witcher alternative, forget about it. Expand

The game lacks character facial animation. The story lacks deepness. The plot is a lot better in Dragon Age, Witcher, Gothic etc.
On the other hand we usually presume that the plot is awful if it is not as non-linear or colorful as in Witcher and so on. But that is not quite accurate. The thing is that the story in Reckoning is good. First of all, most of the caracters are swift speakers.

The thing is that the story in Reckoning is good. First of all, most of the caracters are swift speakers. They give you the whole topic in like 5 seconds. I do not spend much time on it! Secondly, you always have blue topic important for plot development, and you have other topics. You do not have to hear them all. Thirdly, the plot is logical, and that is what makes it quite interesting. No one complains about God of War's linearity and simple story development. Amalur is the same thing. There are other things to make you engaged. The key element is hard difficulty. For Kratos's sake, pick hard difficulty! There is no point in different strategies, crafting, alchemy, speachcraft if you do not feel difficulty of battles!
After that the game becomes an interesting action with a story. And by the way, of all of the modern RPG's Kingdoms of Amalur contains a huge portion of fun for thiefs and assassins. A brand unique branch of skills is at your service. You do not just take daggers instead of swors and axes in your hands. You actually become a different class to control. That is what amazed me. And two marvelous DLCs also speak in favour of this game. The only thing I did not like about the game is the console control over the craracter and navigation through the menus. But that is something you can live with.

One thing to note about this game, is that it's a brand new IP. Which is impressive. Also a lot of people will see the connection to EA and go zomg #@&@(*&# EA. Good news is that after this game I do believe that BHG will be able to do things on their own. They just needed EA for the release or it wouldn't have been released at all. Further product will be, as far as I have heard, released through their own company. Now for the game, everyone has their own opinion about this game and from what I see, what people get from this game is very diverse. The combat for this game is awesome, I've never had more fun fighting in a rpg before. Your ability to mix the classes really adds to the fun of this as well by having the ability to be a mage/rogue, a warrior/mage ... etc etc. Lots of different ways to mix your spec. Or you can just do a pure build if you want. I'm all finesse atm having a ton of fun setting up battles and planning how I'm going to do things. Now the graphics of the game to me are awesome, very bright and very colorful, so if you like that dark realistic Skyrim ( just using an example) look this won't be the game for you. I agree with some peoples statements that the toons graphics are a bit outdates, in BHGs defense this game has been in the works for quite awhile and the characters looks did get a bit behind in the times. This didn't really distract me that much from the actual fun I was having playing the game. Armor sets and gear...... there is tons, your character will look like a badass, almost from the moment you start the game. Blacksmithing to me is overpowered so if you prefer to use gear you find, I wouldn't recommend putting too much time into that.
I'll make this short as I realize this is getting long, if you like having fun, genuine fun playing a game, this is it, give it a chance to grow on you and you will love it. The amount of fun I have, easily over shadows any of the small shortcoming this game has. To be fair, I would love to give this game a 10, but..there is room for improvement as well and I'm sure this company will do that. So I will give it a 9, I would prefer 8 but the 9 will balance out some of the non constructive reviews on here.

It's not so open worlded though, there are invisible walls everywhere, and you can't even jump, zones look a lil bit narrow. But thats not a problem for me, at least they could bind to Space Bar something more useful than jumping. And you won't wander aimlessly like an idiot around vast, empty and boring locations. All zones looks beautiful and are filled with details to admire. So how good is KoA:R? It's "I'd pick this game over Skyrim any day" good, which means it's AMAZING. I call GOTY on this. Delivers exactly what it promised. It's a good (if slightly generic) open world-rpg with a decent story, good combat, and hours and hours of side-quests. While it isn't as fleshed out as some games like Skyrim, it's still excellent in its own right.

I'll start off by saying that gamers that demand challenge will be disappointed. Content is quickly outlevelled and gear so generously given and easy to make, it destroys any opportunity for challenge. Combat is fun, but again.. not for the challenge of it. The storyline is average at best. I do think that the game has merits and potential. The storyline is average at best. I do think that the game has merits and potential. Anyone wanting to be the hero of the day, will likely enjoy the game as it's extremely difficult to fail in any aspect. Fateshifting is extremely OP, it's the ultimate "Win" button and should for the games sake be changed or much more limited. Blacksmithing should be toned down a lot. AI for monsters/villains should be cranked up Alot and in combat you shouldn't be able to mash a single button and destroy everything. Graphics are fine, the basic premise of gameplay is good. There is about 55-75 hrs. of content for players. The freedom of Character development is by far the best thing about the game to me. Want a warrior/ m-u ? or any combination of rogue, magic user or warrior? KoA provides not only for the development but the gearing as well. I think many of the reviews are far to harsh and some would give you the impression that this game is equivalent to an offering by atari 2600. That is certainly not the case. The absolute biggest knock to the game is a lack of challenge for any experienced gamer. Expand

There were some glitches with the camera though, but this is one of the most polished RPG I've ever played (almost JRPG level.) The main problem I have with this game is the main story (no pun intended.) It's really boring, but as I'm a completionist, I dedicate 95% of my gaming time to do side and faction quests, this is not a big deal for me.

    Pros:
+ Very big, almost open, world
+ Fighting system is FUN and require good reflexes along with good stats and gear
+ Varied sidequests (but some fetch quests)
+ Lots of lore and spoken dialog with a larger cast than any Elder Scrolls game
    + Bug free
    + Addictive

    Cons
    - Main story is very boring
    - Camera (specially during battles)
    - Simplified RPG system (no level on enemies p. example.)
    - Not as immersive as Skyrim

Although, when I first played the demo, it didn´t really make me want to buy the full game (Steam only - Origin sucks!), after some critics I read, I figured out, that I still had to give it a try. And I don´t regret it by far.

The charakter creation is quite sweet and the options for different builds during the game are awesome. For those (like me) who seem to fail-build all the time, there is an option (each time you level up) to reset all your points. Thanks for that!

The Story is quite interesting and some changes during the game hit me like a sledgehammer.
Most of the hundreds of side-quests have their own little story, they never felt like "been there, done that".

The Graphics look ravishing... and somehow remind me a bit of WoW. However, if WoW had those wonderful new look, I´d play in Azeroth more often ;-).
It´s comic style, you have to like it (or you do not - nothing in between).

Sound effects are descent and the music score ist truly epic. Sometimes I just sit in front of my Asus and listen to the game. At the loading screen, it almost sounds like a mixture of "Batman begins" and the "WoW-Theme". Great!

Controls are easy to learn (and not hard to master). If you let tutorial advices help you, you´ll not have any problems.

I did not finish the game yet, but my Steam says sth. about 80+ hours of play. So I might reach the finale soon. And I really am looking forward to it. Not because the game is boring, but because I really got into the story and I want to see, how it ends (if it does).

So, if you´re looking for sth. after having "finished" Skyrim, and if you like comic style, then you should really buy Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
To me it´s one of the Top 5 in 2012 even if this year hasn´t even reached the half of it.

Is there sth. negative about it? Well, to me there isn´t, yet. Maybe the ending will disappoint me, but that is yet to see....

It come's off as a Fable combat/story set in an Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim world. As you progress through the game you'll come across varied landscapes and monster's that relate back to the Fae and their 4 courts, aptly named after the four season. The combat is probably the game's strongest and for me weakest point. While fun and fluid, it suffers from a flaw that I can't get past, in the game you're able to activate an ability which essentially slows time and increase's damage output which make's hard boss fights incredibly easy, while the quick time event at the end is satisfying it just doesn't hold a challenge. Sure I could bump the difficulty however that make's the game a struggle the whole way through.

The other issue that I had was the occasionally the camera would point either at the ground, or assume that you have a form of X-ray vision and show you a cliff face or some other solid surface that can't be seen through. I have only even encountered this as a hindrance when I was in an arena like area where you are in close quarters surrounded on all sides, I can understand how some people could consider this a game breaking occurrence. Overall, if you enjoyed Fable or Skyrim then chance's are you will thoroughly enjoy this game as long as you can get past the minor annoyances.

The graphic style is cartoon-y, offering a fresh alternative to some of the other RPGs of this generation, making the game a pleasure to look at, with varied and beautiful environments. The character look unique and special, but the lip-syncing could be better and the draw distance is not great. I haven't encountered any major graphical glitches yet, and the game runs smoothly.

The character look unique and special, but the lip-syncing could be better and the draw distance is not great. I haven't encountered any major graphical glitches yet, and the game runs smoothly.
The dialogue is hit and miss; one type is a tedious list where everyone seems to have the same general options where they will offer vague, similar opinions on a topic plus maybe one additional character-specific topic that will lead you to a quest. The other is a mass-effect choice style where you can choose how you respond to a character (usually an important character). You also get a Fallout-style persuasion option which shows you the chance of success based on your persuasion skill. For main characters, dialogue is interesting and cool, but when you're just exploring, it doesn't do as good a very good job of immersing you but rather bores you, and while the developers could've found a more entertaining way of putting information across, this still does the job; you'll know what you need to know if you want to know it. Additionally, the choices you make have very minor effects and have no impact on the storyline whatsoever. This is fine as the game never claimed to contain major moral choices, but it's something to note if you're planning to get the game.
Due to its third person perspective, Reckoning isn't as accessible as first-person games like Skyrim. It's open-world, but it still has clear boundaries that you cannot cross. It's like A LOT of linear, confined areas have been put next to each other to create a pretty big open world, which works. The interesting thing about Kingdoms of Amalur is that it manages to take bits and bobs from other major RPGs, such as the Dragon Age skill tree, Elder Scrolls looting, Mass Effect dialogue, etc. but still remains original in its own way. You likely won't find something and marvel at its originality, but when you look at the game as a whole, it's easy to see that the developers have taken the best bits out of other games, put them all together and added the element that many of them were somewhat lacking in, game-play, and made a game that is perhaps more complete than any other fantasy RPG on the market.
The game-play, as I'm sure you will have heard is very good. The combat feels fluid, fun and varied, with an array of weapons and spells to use. For the most part, it doesn't feel too challenging at the Normal setting, but there are certain creatures that will certainly pose a threat. The game offers a real-time XP/Level-up system, rewarding players for killing creatures as soon as they do so, which is good. The level-up system is reminiscent of Dragon Age's, where you pick a perk every time you level up and choose which skill from one of the three skill trees (Might, Finesse and Sorcery, or basically, Warrior, Bowman and Mage) to invest points into. Arguably the best thing about Amalur's level-up system is the fact that it never locks you into a certain path. If you invested all your points into Sorcery but never use staffs, that's fine. There's nothing stopping you from playing the game that way. Matching your playing style to your point investment definitely helps, but is never required.
The inventory system is inferior to pretty much every other modern RPG. It's basically a list, going into another list etc. then you get to what you like. Luckily, you can equip any weapon to a Primary or Secondary weapon and can switch between them at the press of a button at any time during game-play, (so you can have a sword as your primary and another sword as your secondary, or a sword and a bow/staff and so on) which is good, but if you want to remap one of your weapon slots, you have to go through several tiers of lists. There is a hotkey system for spells, a dial for potions and two slots for weapons but ultimately this falls flat compared to Skyrim's all-encompassing favourite system which allows you to just have what you want in one, easy-to-access list.
One gripe I have with Reckoning is that it just dumps tons of information onto you as if it was meaningless. The implication of doing something can be as little as a tick on the quest screen. You don't feel like you're doing what you're doing for a reason but rather to just complete the quest. You'll find a town, meet some that give you a quest each, go do their quests (which will likely be generic and boring), turn them in, get your reward and be done. The faction and main story quests are much more fun, but the majority of the side quests aren't.
Overall, Reckoning is fun to play, and that's what matters. The RPG elements work fine, the world is vast and packed with content, and the combat doesn't feel laborious or monotonous, but fun and varied; his game is definitely worth playing if you're an RPG fan.

KOA:R, while not as graphically stunning as recent RPGs, still delivers where it counts - great gameplay, story, and overall satisfaction while playing. It's easy to waste a few hours without feeling as though any time has passed at all, which is a great indication of it's fun factor.

When I first played this game I extremely enjoyed the combat system but felt the world lacked immersiveness. I am usually extremely fickle with games playing some of the best that I buy for 5-10 hours before I lose interest, however; for some reason I kept playing this game. The more I played it, the more I wanted to play. It is not Skyrim; but, it doesn't have to be. If I rated games for time I put in and interest in continuing to play Skyrim would win at 100+; however, until DLC comes out I need somthing else and Amalur is it. Expand

Kingdoms of Amalur is a good game. It's not exceptional, but it is indeed a good game that unfortunately suffers from being released so soon after Skyrim. While it isn't really fair to compare the two games, it is hard not to do just that. I'll try not to make comparisons here, both have their strengths and flaws. KoA has an interesting story, factions and side quests. There is much to do here and most of it is fun. The combat is fun, and even after 30 hours plus game time, hasn't become boring. Some have complained about the 'cartoonish / outdated' graphics, but after playing for a while, I found that the art style seems to fit in the grand scheme of the game. Voice acting is quite well done, but nothing really special. What seems to be missing in the game world is the thrill of exploration. As you travel to an undiscovered location marked on your map by a quest giver, there is no feeling of adventure, and you just want to get to your destination as quickly as possible to 'get on with it'. It's more of a mechanical process as you run towards your quest, pause to fight the enemies that pop in, and then move along. The game, in my opinion is best enjoyed, by doing a bit of the main story quests, some side quests to help you level up, and some faction quest lines, rinse repeat. The tasks are for those that just really need to complete everything, but are nothing more than fetch quests and they really feel boring. The things that I feel 38 Studios / Big Huge Games got right are the loot system and the fact that you won't have to travel to 20 different vendors to sell it all. Weapons also degrade to the point of breaking if you don't keep them maintained. The final game is far better than the demo, and it deserves a look if you are a fan of the genre. The game is good enough to make me want to continue until I complete the main quest line as well as the factions. I'll take some side quests along the way as well. As for the task type of quests that I've taken from various NPCs; those will most likely go unfinished. Expand

Incredibly fun, long and interesting gameplay. I'm about 60 hours in and still on my first playthrough. The side quests are awesome, and the combat has a lot of variety. Graphics look pretty amazing, even though my PC is 3 years old. It's like they've taken the good bits out of every other RPG to date, and linked it to a fantastic, original story.

VALUE: 95 - Looking at my steam played counter for Kingdoms of amalur : 57.7 hours. I´ve only discovered about 25% of the regions in the game, and my bet is that the amount of quests I´ve done (65), are about the same. This game is HUGE.

APPEAL: 85 - The game is somewhat slow to start. The story requires patience to unfold. And perhaps too much side information is given. It wasn´t until around 20 hours played that I got a good idea of where this story was taking off to. But it is worth the wait. Some quests are tedious, and I would have love a bit more in depth conversation and response to my character from the NPC´s.

A brilliant single player RPG with tons of locations/lore/stories to explore. The character building is spot on with tons of possibilities. The story - once taking off, is exciting and thorough.

Sure it has a few minor issues, with camera and occasionally an NPC texture, but for such a humongous epic game it is virtually bug free and flawless. Skyrim, Fable and Fallout 3 are among my favorite games of all time, and they are all infinitely more buggy which is understandable for such big games. All in all, it is the most fun you can have and I see very few games being worth your money coming out this year. A game of the year contender. Don't miss it! Expand

Overall a good game but lost focus in story and quest fairly quickly. Only other problem is controls are more tailored to the console and plays much better with a controller. Otherwise good game and would recommended to anyone who enjoys action RPG's or good long stories in their games.

For all the things that don't work well, the exciting combat and deep world make KAR a very worthy game to play. It's a shame Electronic Arts is doing such a poor job of promoting it, as there is enough here to make the foundation of a very solid franchise.
