Must have remake of this beloved N64 classic. one of the best games of all time. you have to play it knowing its the first 3d Zelda. many aspect of gameplay are updated and game as today game standards seems simple and easy. but its charm is timeless. one of the best 3ds games and an essential for the collection

Having never played the N64 original, I just found the game OK overall and did not understand the acclaim behind the game playing it fresh in 2015. I was constantly wishing i was playing this game as a remaster on a console rather than a handheld.

Though I'll admit that this game is far from perfect, it's still a great game with some great music, good graphics, a great story and a completion time of over 10 hours.

I personally prefer Majora's mask but this is still a great game that I wholeheartedly approve of.

Ocarina of Time is a gaming experience like no other, even to this day, and the 3DS remake does everything right to make it feel modern while still preserving its brilliant, time-tested approach of game design.

Within the first hour of the game, it's apparent that Hyrule is a large, sprawling, wondrous place. Super Mario 64 introduced gamers to extremely large levels chock-full of exploration, but Ocarina of Time introduces gamers to an entire WORLD. It's honestly a bit intimidating, getting used to controlling Link and his initially small set of abilities and weaponry, along with figuring out where to go and what to do. Ocarina of Time often relies on subtle hints and puzzles to inform the gamer of how to best progress, which can sometimes be frustrating, but nonetheless adds to the game's sense of magic.

Anyone who toughs it out through the first few segments of the game will have their patience awarded: the game really starts to shine after its first third, bringing to the table some of the best level design I have ever seen, coupled with the immersion of a living, breathing fantasy world.

You'll face physics-defying temple rooms and unbelievably epic bosses, separated by very humorous moments with NPCs and all the simple, satisfying moments: riding around Hyrule Field on your horse, playing one of the many useful tunes on your Ocarina (used to warp between locations and solve puzzles), and uncovering a hidden item that you didn't first realize was there!

There's so much content here that an ambitious gamer will have his hands full. If I have a complaint, however, it's that much of the optional content is extremely hidden, and there are often few or no clues to find it. Without a guide, you will probably never find that last heart container that's hidden under a very specific spot with no discernible markings. Still, the fact that much is not obvious in this game somehow adds to the immersion of this magical fantasy world.

On the 3DS, the game undergoes a graphical makeover, and everything looks phenomenal and up to the standards of the rest of the handheld's library. The remake makes use of the system's gyroscope for looking around and aiming, which works well, but finds itself in conflict with the system's 3D setting - the game is better played with 3D off.

Other than the graphics, this version of the game has a few minor gameplay improvements, most notably making navigating and progressing in the Water Temple more intuitive; I can honestly say that this dungeon was extremely fun to play through, though not entirely without frustration.

Overall, every moment of Ocarina of Time that I disliked was soon erased by something amazing that came soon afterward. The game is not flawless, but it does everything it can do to be a revolutionary masterpiece, and to do this day, I have a hard time believing otherwise.

For me personally, the game felt unfair and too cryptic (what others might like about it). I do not mind being given a general direction and then to work something out. However, this game gives at times no direction of where to go or what to do to get there. Some like this, I do not. Running around the world, attempting to get clues on where to go and how to actually get there seems quite frustrating. A lot of the time obsticles are trial and error and it ruined the immersion for me, as I constinantly arrived at hiccups. I understand the game uses abstract reasoning & I could be very well weak at that. But, I had no motivation to play the game, so I didn't feel the want to invest in the puzzles and I found myself caring less about Link in his attempt to save Hyrule. Expand

Both games can actually be quite different experiences depending on how you play them, but if I had to choose one to replay, it would be this version. The cleaner graphics allow for a much better understanding of what is happening around you, and quite frankly will not scare your children nearly as much as the Nintendo 64 version scarred the minds of many kids who played this game for the first time on Christmas of 1998 (or Thanksgiving if your family is into that kind of thing).

Ocarina of Time is considered one of, if not the best video game of all time by most major and minor video game reviewers and journalists, so for it to be remade with better graphics, on a handheld console, with gyro controls, and in the option of 3D was a huge risk for Nintendo and the Zelda team, but they nailed it. The gyro controls flopped on many games, but not this one. Aiming your bow and arrow or grappling hook on your own using your DS provides a much cleaner and quicker system of aim and shoot than the Nintendo 64 was able to offer, and sometimes the 3D option combined with the first person perspective of the aiming items immerses you so much within the game your heart begins to beat twice as fast when you aim down an enemy with your bow.

All in all the 3DS version of this game balances nostalgia and gameplay perfectly. They improved on the only minor issues of the original game, while (aside from the beautifully advanced graphics) not getting rid of anything we love and fear about the original 3D Hyrule.

If you have never played this classic game, stop reading this review and get out there and buy it. The core essence of Ocarina of Time ages exceptionally well (even in light of sequels that have expanded on it), and it's never looked better. That Nintendo and Grezzo were only willing to adjust and enhance so much (by and large the sound is untouched) is truly admirable and speaks to their respect for the source material and its original developers. There is no doubt in my mind that it was the right choice. Why mess with perfection?

That said, that decision comes with a price, one that will frustrate many of you who have played this game over and over again and are in the market for drastic change. If the graphical boost isn't enough - and let's be honest, we're already seeing some games on the 3DS that look better than this - you're not going to have much else to satisfy your interests. It's clear this game is being released to find a new generation of gamers that are just discovering Nintendo's franchises. The rest of us will have to determine if it's worth re-visiting a Hyrule we've known for nearly 13 years. Rest assured, though, that doing so will not only let you relive a masterpiece, it will let you experience it in the best way possible.

There's really only two good bosses: Twinrova and Dark Link. Dark Link isn't even a main-boss, since it's a sub-boss.
The characters are extremely bland, basic, underdeveloped, and not interesting at all. Not a single one of the characters are good. I don't get why they get so much praise. Well, actually, I do. People mostly look at nastolgia, when praising this game. Actually, 50% of the time would be more accurate, but you get the point. OoT gets far too many passes by the TLoZ fanbase, despite the flaws being so easy to see and the game is filled with them. Of course people can have their own opinions on the characters and the game in general, but when I look at this game as objectively as possible, I realise a very large amount of the praise OoT gets is utter nonsense. Still only in my opinion, of course, but you likely know what I mean.
The dungeons are largely bland. Shadow Temple and Water Temple are masterpieces, Dodongo's Cavern is also good, and Spirit Temple and Bottom of the Well are great. Other than that, however, the dungeons are quite underwhelming. Ice Cavern and Jabu Jabu's Belly are piles of rubbish stacked upon each other. Fire Temple, Inside the Deku Tree, Forest Temple, and Ganondorf's Castle are underwhelming and mediocre.
Some quests are really great and fun, whilst others like the Biggoron's Sword fetch quest are tedious and overly glorified.
The story is painfuilly mediocre. Little to not depth, short, incredibly overrated, and pails in comparison to other Zelda stories.

Keep in mind this is still a good game. When it comes to how good the game is it's good, but an absolute joke compared to what gaming would become after it. I'd say The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Majora's Mask do everything better than OoT. And when I say everything, I mean everything. The narratives, main quests, gameplay, worlds, characters, exploration, mini-games, side activities like quests and hearth pieces, etc. all crush OoT's. The games also have loads more detail, symbolism, sub-text, and depth in general than OoT could ever dream to have.

OoT is still a masterpiece in the sense that it was a major milestone, but as a game it's a joke - both when compared to the Zelda games that came before it, the Zelda games after it, and what gaming would grow to be after OoT. Still great when comparing it at its time of release, though. The remake is also quality, without taking much from the original experience, and adds a lot of nice quality of life features.
To end this off, let's not forget OoT is not as much of a milestone as it is believed to be. The vast majority of its features had been done before. Things like linear stories, its entire format, etc. were all done before OoT, both inside Zelda and outside it. Seriously, name just ten things that were unique to OoT back then, since there is very few. It borrows most of its content and structure from A Link to the Past, but whilst worsening them and glorifying them, yet the game still gets credit for so many things that ALttP and Zelda I did. The only major unique thing about it is that it was one of the first games of its kind - a successful 3D game. Still historically important for gaming, a big achievement, and pretty fun game, but it's simply not even close to as great as places like Metacritic and r/zelda would have you believe.

A groundbreaking game which deserves its place in the echelons of greats. What makes Ocarina of Time so fantastic is that it's aesthetically a fairy tale. It also boasts some of the best level designs in the form of the dungeons characteristic of the series. Controls are a bit dated but all things considered, it is undoubtedly a classic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D is a pure masterpiece! It is my favorite game of all time and I believe it is the best game of all time. People complain about the water temple and fighting Dark Link, but I believe that was still an amazing part! I have grown up with Zelda instead of Mario, so I am biased on my claim about the best game of all time. When you enter Geurdo Valley, the game just gets way better. And the dungeons never disappointed me with the exciting new elements, even more combat, and all the puzzles that you have to solve. I do not remember everything, because it’s been a few years since I’ve last played it. Even with all of that, it I still believe it is a masterpiece, and in my opinion the best game of all time! Even by today's standards the overall atmosphere of the game is outstanding all of this is making zelda OOT really timeless and nostalgic. But unfortunately under all of those great things there is a huge amount of irritating and frustrating aspects. The Controls are absolutely terrible. I seriously thought that this game will make a good use of a new 3DS C-stick but unfortunately I was wrong. Lack of second thumbstick is just very wrong in 3D game these days. It's really frustrating when you're trying to Center the camera for jump or hit but then the camera decides to Center it for you because why not. Ufortunately a major portion of the game is so unintuitive... a lot of times seriously I had big problems to figure it out what I'm supposed to do at the moment. In lot of situations I ended up wondering in location for about an hour or two just to see the guide on the internet, that shows me that there is some kind of a hidden wall that I'm supposed to blow up with a bomb... Without the guide it's seriously very, very frustrating, unintuitive and just simply bad deigned game. Another strange thing is when you die or load a save you are teleported to a beginning of dungeon or location and that just forces you to reply whole location once more. Despite very good impressions after last boss fight I just simply can't ignore lot of wasting hours trying to find a way. And I can't forget the strong feelings of irritation and frustration. It's really not fun to play a game with guide all the time simply because you can't understand the dungeon design of creators. I highly recommend to watch some walk through or story explaining videos on YT but if you want to beat this game "on your own", a hugely recommend YT channel "ZeldaMaster" he will provide you with excellent tips and dungeon strategies. It's easy to see why this game is so praised and so many games are still influenced by this. I love this genre and it's really hard to find an action game as good as this one. It felt super satisfying just discovering more items and better equipment throughout the game and the story was incredible. The story was mind-blowing and this is a game also suited for kids, it's just amazing. Princess Zelda was the MVP and this game made her my favorite all-time video game character.

Ocarina of Time paved the way for virtually all adventure, puzzle, exploration, dungeon crawling, story telling, target real time combat games that followed. To this day, many games still borrow these gameplay aspects from Ocarina of time.

The progression is amazing. Whenever the game introduces an item, the game also makes the player use common sense to see where to apply that item to solve a puzzle to progress. There's a great sense of satisfaction when I did figure it out. Passing by unsolvable puzzles, I knew I'd probably pass by an item later to help me. However, there were some puzzles where the solution was a little vague, forcing me to refer to a guide. However, these were far and few in between. Most puzzles were reasonable. The puzzles within the dungeons were very deep, and fun to play through. Anticipating what new item I'd come across was exciting, and seeing how it could be applied to solve puzzles.

The story is amazing. Time traveling between young link and adult link was cool, and probably a mind blowing concept to see in a game back in the 90s. The way some puzzles were incorporated with the time travel was also really neat. The areas were varied. Forest-y areas, watery areas, volcano, snowy caverns. It gave the world so much live on top of the abundance of different characters Link met.

Some bad things though...the ice cavern was stupid, because my wallet was full, so why would I think about getting the silver rupees when they are worth 100 each. I would go back when my wallet is empty to get the rupees then. But little did I know that the rupees also served as switches to open the gate. The game should have used switches instead of rupees to not be misleading. In Ganon's castle, I needed golden gauntlets to move big pillar in puzzle, but they didn't let me know I had to get it in another room in the castle. In kakaro village, I had to go through invisible opening in the well with no hint aside from "whispers in the area". This was to get the lens of truth which was used to SEE invisible walls. Being required to solve a puzzle using the item which was concealed inside is like trying to open a safe that has the key locked inside.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game is truly something special, from the music to the dungeons to the combat this game is a near masterpiece no matter how you look at it.
there's not much i can say about this game that hasn't already been mentioned before but one thing I don't hear nearly enough people talk about are the ending lines spoken by zelda after beating ganondorf, "home, when your supposed to be... home where your supposed to be!" and "goodbye link" these moments are truly some of the most impactful moments from any game I've ever played, only being topped by the ending of wind waker which is the only reason I haven't given this game a perfect rating
tldr: go play this game, its really good

The greatest game of all time gets the greatest remaster of all time. What more could you ask for? Many things about the original game have been fixed, such as having to open the menu 40 times in the infamous water temple. The visuals are absolutely stunning and all character models have been rebuilt from the ground up. Aiming is better and combat is also smoother. For Zelda fanatics, this re-release of one of the best Zelda titles out there seems like it could be a cash grab – but the additions, especially the great use of the 3DS graphical prowess and the 3D itself make it a must purchase for all gamers, new and old.

Beautiful graphics, that wonderful soundtrack, the enthralling story and that damn annoying fairy, the 3DS version has it all and is easily the best port to ever be made of the legend.

One of the most definite games from the 90's is back better than ever. The new visuals brighten the epic adventure well, and the Master Quest is a nice add. All in all Ocarina of Time is a true classic belonging in every 3DS owner's shelf. [Aug 2011]
