    Layton’s Mystery Journey is a mixed bag. Fans of the series who are happy to just get more puzzles and plot should be content with this: by no means is it the best game in the series, but it should do the trick if you’ve played all the other entries. If you haven’t, you might want to try older Layton games like The Lost Future first, because they do a far better job when it comes to storytelling.

    I just replayed all Layton Games again and this is just by far the worst one. The puzzles, which in the Professor Layton Games always had aI just replayed all Layton Games again and this is just by far the worst one. The puzzles, which in the Professor Layton Games always had a twist, are made for children, there wasn't one where I had any kind of difficulties and none of them needed any second thought.
    The stories are just completely boring, without the length needed to build up any excitement and comming from the 3DS games (especially Azran Legacy and the Phoenix Wright crossover) this was just pure disappointment. The characters weren't even the problem, even though Ernest made me so mad with his bs character, but what it really was, was the child friendliness, even more present than in the other games. I think the TV series shows the route they took with Lady Layton really well and sadly this is not what me and any other fans was excited for the 3 years this game was in development.

While the professor Layton games still were quite unisex games you will feel quite out of place when you are playing Mystery Journey and aren't a completely girly girl. Dress ups, interior decoration and Katrielle always feeling the need to stuff herself with food (a character treat she seems to share with absolutely every female lead character of Japanese girl series) - these so far were more prominent than an actual storyline. The stories are just small single chapters with close to no connection and the plot and also the characters really lack charm. While the professor Layton games were serious/emotional with a touch of humour (absolutely fitting) I have the feeling this game tries to be funny with a touch of seriousness but horribly fails at both. The voice actors often say something different from the text on screen (and it's actually sounding better than the text on screen). And what's with all these pointless two second long cutscenes? Also the translations sometimes seem quite bad, not only in the English version which others have already mentioned here but also in the German version that I played.
    Are we really sure - is this really a game developed by Level 5 or a bootleg copycat that tried to make some quick cash with a lackluster phone game that for whatever reason was later copied to 3DS?    … Full Review »

    This game is a pretty good Layton game! Its story may be a bit weaker than some of its predecessor's, and we have to agree that some of theThis game is a pretty good Layton game! Its story may be a bit weaker than some of its predecessor's, and we have to agree that some of the cases' resolutions make little sense and are not that great, but the game has some great puzzles and going through the cases is very fun! I have to say, though, that as you progress in the game it gets better and better. Also, its graphics, for a 3DS, are very good, although of course this game isn't focused on graphics. While we all miss Luke and Professor Layton, the 3 new main characters (Layton's daughter, her assistant Ernest, and the dog) are awesome, they are very charismatic and fun to play with. We have to highlight as well that there are 195 puzzles (185 + 10 special ones), that is I think the highest number ever in a Layton game! Coupled with the daily puzzles you can download, there are a lot of misteries to solve!

    All in all, a pretty good game, if you like the saga this is a must-have, and if you haven't played any other Layton games yet, this one doesn't disappoint as a start!    … Full Review »
